Looking back at the underrated Silent Hill 4: The Room

The Bloodshed: "In 2004, Team Silent released what was their last title together as a whole, Silent Hill 4 and what I believe is a truly deep and twisted horror game with incredible symbolism."

Agreed! SH4 gets wayyyy less love than it deserves.

I liked Silent Hill 4 a lot, but lets not pretend it doesn't have major issues and deserve a lot of the flack it receives. Melee weapon charge attacks are bonkers OP with 600 invincibility frames, inventory management is complete crap, half the game is an escort mission through areas you've already been, enemy design is poor and the main character is a wet blanket while the antagonist is absurd even for a Silent Hill game. It's easily the worst of the Team Silent games, which isn't saying a lot considering its still way better than everything that came afterwards.

Again, still liked it a lot, and the hauntings were amazing, but the game is definitely not underrated.

I disagree about the enemy design, I thought the monsters in Silent Hill 4 were pretty well done but it was the lack of variety which was it's down fall. Silent Hill 4 's melee system was easily the best in the series but it was the auto lock-on that made things feel awkward for me. Completely agree on the inventory due to the "ghost bullets" taking as much space as a clip (and even he clips were unstackable which was annoying) however all Silent Hills had you retreading areas at the last half of the game due to the "Nowhere" dimension that links them. The escort mission was a little annoying but there was a hidden concept near the end that I found brilliant not only in offsetting the struggle of keeping Eileen alive but offers great symbolism in the game (similar to finding the hidden treasures after thoroughly investigating the minimalist storytelling in the Souls series) I do feel that Silent Hill 4 is the worst of the works from the original team however I do feel it greatly deserves the underrated moniker.

It was great until... I remember getting far, probably 3/4 finished then hit a big of some sort in a room and couldn't progress any further. I was still a kid in school so I had some time to invest... For a month I poured over strategy guides and backtracked as much as possible. I restarted and got to the same point with the same result and gave up on it forever. I did like it but the game breaking bug killed it for me

Month after month after month... games I've already purchased. Which was the waste of money? Buying the games or renewing the PS+?
