I think that the PS VR was used for an example here, but I have to agree with the author. We are taking gaming and the whole VR concept for granted right now.

If anything, there's just a lot of people coming to realize that it wasn't all it was hyped up to be, that it does have very real issues, and that many of its games aren't the life-changers for gamers that some devs passed them off as.

The bright spot, though, is that as medical tech and VR progress, we eventually will get those synaptic dive pods.XD

Proper written article . Psvr is amazing and its so immersive. I think ive played over 30hrs on it already easily without a problem and i have a hard time going back to playing traditional 2d/ 3d games. I wish battlefield 1 was compatible with psvr. I must say that vr is here to stay and its not just a silly gimmick. Im hoping that the majority of games for the ps4 will be compatible with psvr in two years and especially the fps

I totally agree with you. I was actually surprised at how well i really like PSVR. And let me say this, if they make a full blown game on the Robot Rescue from the PSVR playroom, i will pre order the game day 1. That game took me by total surprise. And my whole PSVR experience hasn't been nothing short of amazing.

This was a great shot for Sony to help usher in potentially a new era and doing so among the other great head sets. They conserved on money by using old tech in a new way and push new tech in a brand new way. This us the start of a new venue of entertainment. Now The PSVR may not be the "best" out of all the options but it's a quality VR experience for a great price and probably going to make the most headway to consumers that had no interest in VR. Getting to the non core user is key right now to make VR viable market no matter which headset does it.
No matter what "side" your on this is a great entry level to start your VR experience if not just stay strictly on. With the interest still alive will welcome a new gen of headsets to better those entitled needs for those some.

how would that be possible without making a bunch of compromises to the game. it already runs at a variable resolution so they can hit 60fps. use driveclub as an example at what psvr does and how it impacts performance. driveclub is a lot more linear than battlefield but you think psvr can be done even though driveclub had to reduce some graphic features and reduce the amount of cars they can put on the screen? if they made battlefield for psvr it would be lucky to hit 720p (most likely even less) and you would have a serious hit to the graphics and destruction and you wont be getting 64 players online thats for sure.

maybe if developers didnt have to worry about making games for the ps4 and could concentrate on the ps4 pro it could be done but sony wont allow that.

and let's be honest here, we are not talking about a $200 console that has motion controls and it fun to play and we can accept the games looking last gen. we are talking at least $750 to invest in psvr because you also need a ps4, thats still a rather large investment for something fun for a few hours that is taking serious concessions to the hardware.

the ps5 will be able to provide a quality vr experience and i think by that time we will have a lot more aaa game support for it.

I love my PSVR. Every one of my friends and relatives that has tried PSVR loved it. Not a single complaint. The majority of PSVR's reviews have been positive. That's all I need to know that the general opinion is overwhelmingly positive.

I've never let anything outside of gaming determine what I'm posting about I've even went forward as the talk about things that I used to like after specific reveals like no man sky or even The Witcher 3 where anyone could look up my comment history to see how I felt about those games prior to release in comparison to after.

I never let liking something go against my better judgement. Even from developers Publishers or companies I tend to like. Something like this questions someone's Integrity as you now question the motive behind everything they post and the reason behind it.

See this is what gets me about people, like any kind of peripheral is a gimmick so immediately there's the negative connotation to anything that's designed to enrich interactive entertainment experiences.

Light guns are a gimmick
Motion controls are a gimmick
3D on the 3DS is a gimmick
Making a system go from a dock station to a portable system is a gimmick

The thing with PSVR or VR in general is it genuinely creates an experience that takes interactive entertainment to a level you can't get anywhere else but with VR.

So is this a gimmick or innovation? I think once you can play any game with high fidelity visuals in VR regardless if it was meant for VR it'll be hard to go back to playing anything on a flat television screen.

So if that happens what becomes of the "gimmick" side of VR? If anything, to me, this is an evolution of Displays merged with 3D environaments. In a sense it's going from just looking at things from behind a window to actually feeling like you've enetered that world.

Like Rez and Thumper... I switched between VR and a TV and it loses so much on TV after you've experienced it in VR.

The immersion you get from VR was not possible before so that in itself makes it more than a gimmick, if anything it is a evolution of the medium! Is it perfected? No. But with time and experimentation it will get better.

Look at cars for examples the first could only drive at a snails pace! Now we have the most exotic cars moving at close to 300 mph. Same with Planes, the list goes on, and guess what? Initially they were considered gimmicks

So you're just going to conveniently ignore what you said about third party games and pretty much anything that, coincidentally, isn't on a Nintendo console? I'm far from a Sony fanboy. I give credit where it's due. I always praise MS's backwards compatibility program, and I don't care if it pisses anybody off. Phil Spencer has really turned the ship around. I bought the OG Xbox, the 360 (loved that thing) and will likely buy an Xbox One (need to play Sunset Overdrive, Halo 5 and the Forza Horizon games). I also criticized Sony's reveal of the PS4 Pro, and thought that it would make more sense for games to aim for 1080p at 60FPS (otherwise it would be pointless for me as I don't have a 4K TV).

Don't even pretend you'd level those sort of criticisms at NIntendo's actual products (not just their marketing). You literally spend your entire day damage controlling for Nintendo. Even if I was a fanboy, there is no equivalency. Case closed.

I think those that invested in VR want it to be a game changer. I wanted to feel the same way, but there were too many compromises in my opinion so I took my PSVR back. I believe it's a step forward, but not quite enough for my money. Others feel different and I respect that. Perhaps the next gen of VR with better tracking, a higher res display and graphics on par with current gen hardware will be it.

Read the reviews... every headset has something the others don't, vive has room scale, rift has higher res, psver has most comfort, rgb oled (no screen door), most support, and lowest point of entry. Can't stress comfort enough, having something pressing against your face (rift and vive) is like wearing a scuba mask... It can be claustrophobic.

You don't have "screen door", but you do have grainy picture quality. It's not a clear screen by any means. I was hoping PSVR would be more clear, but it's not. Vive had the highest quality in every category but it is also the most expensive. PSVR is the most comfortable and the least expensive. I was disappointed with the tracking in many games and with the field of motion. You can't move much or the game loses track of your line of sight rather quickly.

Death, u are both right and wrong. Batman for instance is clear while drive club is blurry... it is all based on developer decisions and art direction. However I would hope vibe to have better resolution being 2x the price... but like I said it's all give and take, psvr has the highest refresh rate of all headsets.... 120hz vs 90hz... meaning there is less motion blur on psvr.

About the PSVR, it's a great product with many shortcomings. I'm not sure it's going to be financially successful, but I'm certain Sony will do their best to paint it's sales in a good light. It's far more accessible and easy to use than any of the competing products. It's home VR done right and at a consumer friendly price point. It has an outstanding selection of games and a ton of developer support. However, even all these positives still might not be enough to save it from failure at the market. I am hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. The luke-warm media reaction is not a good start. Consumers aren't exactly blown away either.

Agree on that 100%. VR is absolutely amazing tech but when people praise it for enhancing gaming they often seem to ignore how much it also limits game design at the same time. It is still very new tech and developers haven't even figured out the most basic solutions yet.

Special consideration could be assessed for scoring of VR games in general, but I think it easy fall for one's own hype. And vice versa of course. People getting physically unwell by VR shouldn't be reviewing VR games.

Maybe, but if you do compare it to traditional games and then doesn't stack up now, why would we go to VR then?
It would be like "Well I can play this game on VR and get more immersed, but have an overall not as good a game."

Whether or not you like VR, the fact of the matter is, VR limits developers and players in what can be done.
- If it's not FPS, most ask what's the point?
- There can't be too crazy up and down and all around movement, else people get sick
- You can't move with the motion controllers, or they reintroduce the analogue controller with Move, but then you only have one hand
- You need strong hardware for more immersive graphical fidelity or lower it cause you can not go under a certain frame limit

VR is cool, but there is so little point now to play anything on it. Games are limited because ... well, we CAN and we WILL compare them to games we have today and no. They just don't stack up and they also can't be used for Call of Duty, Battlefield, Battlefront, any shooter on multiplayer cause reaction time to turn your head is far less fast than just using a mouse.

And on a meta note, why should CONSUMERS be grateful for something they are PAYING for? "Oh thank you Sony for allowing us to buy your product?" Again, it's cool tech, but even now, it's too young for many many MANY people to be considered something they wanna invest 500 or more into for more immersion for lesser games.

Lastly no, I dont think customers should show how they are grateful for what they pay in that sense but its more generally speaking imo people are not enough grateful for being privileged in their gaming hobby. A very low percentage of the world population could afford or even have access to videogames and fortunately things have changed and more advanced tech can be available for more and more people. If VR games offer more than regular games then what's the problem? If what you're saying is true, comparing VR games to "regular" games should be detrimental to the "regular" games, not the other way around.

Also, offering something different isn't an excuse. Reviewers have to judge the quality of the experience they had regardless the genre or what type of game it is.

it adds different things. they aren't gonna score the game on immersion I can't imagine, but if they did the psvr version would score higher. you have to look at psvr games in a whole package including the immersion I keep using that word because that is the main selling point in vr but not the main selling point on a regular console.

1: The idea that anyone elses subjective experience of a product (and the review they gave it based on that) is somehow invald or unacceptable because it isn't the same as yours is preposterous. I'd give it a 3/10. Know why? I get motion sickness when playing some (though not many) normal games, any form of VR is *completely* unplayable after the first like 3 minutes so I get 0 enjoyment out of it. In fact it actively makes my day worse because not only am I not having fun, I won't have fun with anything else for like 2 hours after I stop. That's not invalid because it's realizing your childhood dream, and your experience isn't invalid because all it does is make me sick. The literal job of reviews and reviewers is to offer their perspective, we're BOTH right and both scores are valid.

2: Review scores are an inherently flawed way to talk about anything except to give a general idea of how positive or negative an experience was. Harping on about a score that isn't prefect is stupid, it's the same as being angry that someone wasn't having as much fun as you, which is stupid.

3: Nobody owes Sony anything. Nobody is being ungreatful if they don't like a product or service Sony is trying to sell them, that's literally just capitalism working as intended.

It's not naysaying, it's an opinion based on someones subjective expereice. Deal with it.

i think you missed the whole point of the article and the video thaty the guy posted in it.
it had nothing to do with whether you get sick when playing a vr game and decide to give it a bad review because of it. The article is about people in general not really appreciating what our technology has become.

I got sick from it too, but my kid loved it. From my experience it affects adults more than teens/young adults. They say you get less sensitive over time. I may go back later when its cheaper and there are more compelling games I like.

I agree that the reviews on a lot of the software are straight stupid. Like Batman VR was getting 4's and 6's and I bought it regardless and think it's rather pretty amazing. Like you do and see things that really break through an interactive/visual sensory wall.

The thing is this, watching these games in a YouTube review or seeing them in anything other than the headset you WILL NOT see what it's like for the person wearing the headset. Like watching Batman on a let's play I didn't think it looked all that "wow" but the person playing kept saying it's amazing.

Once I actually got it and put it on the 3D literally simulates How objects look in reality and the way you move your head allows you to see just as you would in reality, which is so impressive.

Bottom line just see it for yourself. It's the only way you can truly get how it looks and works. I will tell you this, I am extremely happy with my PSVR purchase. To me everything I've played so far has just been fun and incredible to see.

My example would be Kitchen. I watched a YouTube video of someone playing it, didn't think it was scary, lost interest and moved on.
Yesterday, I decided to give it a go; it wasn't long before I became immersed in the environment when the guy tried to cut the ropes loose. I thought an accident could happen that he might over cut the rope and injure me. It wasn't until that woman showed up and plunged that knife on my leg that I forgot my purpose of the demo. When she got up in my face with the knife I almost lost it lol. Great demo!
Today, I decided to look at some of the Youtube videos of people playing it and it does not look and feel the same as the actual experience in VR. Then looking at the comments, i noticed a lot of negative post from people who have never tried it but judged it by the video.
If people ask me about my thoughts on VR, I would just advise them to tried it themselves. Videos and words can't accurately describe VR.

I have let like a dozen people try VR and the first thing that is said every single time someone tries it for the first time is "This is amazing". And quite frankly it is totally amazing. I can not see how someone can argue that PSVR is bad.

PSVR is not bad, but it is rather limited. Gamers that love it all talk about it in the same way. They talk about what it can be instead of what it is. Many of the VR experiences like Batman are amazing, the 3D is incredible and the immersion is something we have never seen on console. It's not a game though, its an experience. Trying to turn these mini-experiences into games will be difficult due to the movement limitations and light tracking tech used. You also need to get devs on board which will be a challenge since PSVR is a Sony only device and covers a small portion of the PS4 userbase. Kinect and Move seen limited support by third party devs since each only covered half of the potential user base. PSVR is much more expensive and still console exclusive. Why would third parties make games for it instead of targeting PS4 and Xbox One? I don't see anything more than mini games/ indies hitting the platform because of this.

wrong, most people get it and enjoy it but are also able to admit its shortcomings. what are those shortcomings you ask? the tracking is questionable at times which can cause nausea. its ok if the controllers dont track perfectly but if the head unit is having issues that spells trouble. sony is using last gen technology for its tracking. then we have the software which lets face it, is very limited and lots of the stuff out really isnt getting very good reviews. some games are of course getting good reviews too. then we have the impact psvr does on the ps4 itself and the loss of visual qaulity which can be quite drastic. so we went to the ps4 being the most powerful console to the system being at the bottom end for vr as far as performance.

No offence dude but it genuinely sounds like you have never used a PSVR. I was never sceptical as such but wanted to try it before making the investment, which i did yesterday.

I only played Rigs, Eve, Rush of Blood, Drive club, Batman and the cage dive but OMG its f f*cking amazing - online clips really don't do it justice. Driveclub may have noticeably dropped in res but I enjoyed it more than I do the original...strangely I was also better at it?

I also had no particular interest in Rush of Blood or the Move controllers until i tried them - best Operation Wolf ever! :)

many people still make comments about game reviews, should they be exempt from doing so unless they play the game too? the fact is you cannot ignore REAL people on respected game sites who make similar comments. those could range from the tracking issues to how some games just feel like tech demo's. are you honestly going to come here and tell me psvr tracks perfectly 100% of the time? i have the playstation move and i know how it tracks the controllers and its limitations and need for proper lighting and so on. thrive uses lasers which is far more accurate for example but also more expensive.

Ok here's my two cents. When I got the psvr I was excited when I put it on and fired up my very first game called "until dawn rush of blood" I was completely floored I was not expecting what I saw I was in the game I was in complete and utter awe. When I configured my motion sticks and suddenly my hands and entire body became the character in the game and I was suddenly holding a gun in each hand I was blown away I was experiencing a future I thought I never would. It was beautiful I was so happy to be alive in this moment and experience the birth of a new generation of gaming. Finally just what the industry needed a massive shot in the arm of new tech. I love my psvr I care for it like a newborn baby. BUT! here's the thing it's not without its flaws. Number one there's a gradual shift to the left when it's on you have to periodically press the the option button to recenter it sometimes it's so bad I find the completely shutting off the visor and back on does the job best. Second the audio needs work it's good but it could be better, third the resolution is god awful most games are just too blurry and washed out coming out of corners or distances no matter how much you adjust the visor the clarity is sub par. Fourth after a few minutes of playing the glasses need constant wiping from fog or sweat which in turn make an already weak resolution even worse. This is what I've honestly found to be troublesome with the psvr but I still love it don't care when it's running no matter it's sub standard quality it brings something new and never experienced before.

The games are hit or miss some games are terrible like vr luge others are awesome like until dawn.
I don't think it's ungrateful to point out truthful points in a game or tech the are good or bad as long as it's honest and not just bagging on something just for the hell of it. I played drive club it was awesome to be inside a car a Ferrari at that but having disembodied hands with no body or arms really detracted from feeling I was in the car. When playing vr it's imperative that the player feel immersed to truly feel what vr is meant to be. A floating gun or hands just doesn't cut it.

So Iam sorry but if pointing out flaws in something we want to continue to develop and make better equates to us being ungrateful I'd say the problem is your view on things and not the players who want continued advancement and quality from what's being sold to us.

Did you use the camera to measure the distance between your eyes? That does help a bit.

I have not experienced any sweat or fog on the lenses, maybe my face contours are different than mine.

Have you played RIGS? It's my favorite game for sure, if they allowed offline quick matches and custom games (like making the games longer, special rules) it would be a 10/10 for me.

Yeah did the whole measurement of eyes, distance from tv, reconfigure lights on visor and camera etc absolutely nothing has helped stop the slow drift to the left. I checked Reddit and Sony forums it seems it's a known issue with many players. Hoping for a patch on this. Have not tried rigs yet will try it today.

One note with Rigs. The default controls gave me motion sickness. I had to turn off the tunnel vision comfort mode and change it to turning with right stick instead of with yourbhead, that made it much more comfortable and I can play it without any fatigue.

It's such a blast. Those awesome moments feel so much more epic in VR!

PSVR, is an addition to what has now been established by Oculus, Vive & GearVR.
Virtual Reality is already constantly evolving, the new Touch controls are pretty impressive, Dexmo and Manus are doing amazing things for hand presence. Leap motion are doing some cool things and developers are having some fun. Oculus have revealed they are working on Santa Cruz, a wireless midrange, inside out tracking HMD, with many social experiences planned.

VR is really taking strides in future developments, PSVR is a closed environment setup that is designed for one purpose, experiencing PlayStation experiences through a HMD. It is but a slice of what VR is. No hating involved here, so please don't think I am trying to downplay PSVR.

The more people get to play and experience VR the better. PSVR is providing a really good entry point for gamers, PCVR offers a wealth of options and experiences with extra toys, and mobile VR provides a fun anywhere experience.

As a kid of the 80s I grew up playing on NES/Spectrum/Acorn Electron/Master System etc. I am grateful at what technology has done for gaming with things like VR. Some of the younger gamers seem to take this stuff for granted, i'm grateful that Sony took the plunge and decided to spend time and money on this tech even though i'm sure there were doubters believing the PS4 didn't have the power to deliver a decent VR experience.

I disagree with the author...of the reviews I've seen, the vast majority have been overwhelmingly positive, and very fair in what the system struggles with, and what it does well. Many reviews have even been glowing, saying that they prefer the psvr to either the Rift or the Vive, sighting the lower cost of entry, the comfortability and usability of the headset being better, even mentioning a framerate advantage and a better and larger lineup of games at launch and in development for the psvr. If we're being honest, I think most would agree the psvr is getting better reviews than many expected it too, especially considering the price point.

In my opinion PSVR is the 1st mainstream step into this new world call Virtual reality.

For a newcomer to VR, the PSVR is a no brainier and a game changer like TV for someone who never saw TV.
Point case it's awesome! you can feel the speed in rush of Blood, you are the Batman, The knife is in your face in Kitchen and you can sense the scope and height of your robot in Rigs.
But after a couple of hours playing it, you start seeing the shortcoming that reviewer are mentioning.

I'm gonna be honest. PSVR is the most amazing experience I've had in gaming.

That said, the resolution sucks. It's my biggest complaint. And the software a lineup is extremely lacking. The only reason it's gotten a pass from me is because VR makes even mediocre games become absolutely amazing. And it does have a few actually good ones like DriveClub, which was already a great game before so it's just absolutely incredible in VR.

What gets me though is how it's a matter of ungratefulness when it comes to a Sony product but when it comes to Xbox or Nintendo everything gets slammed.

Oh come on, get over your fanboyism. People wouldn't know it, but it's actually possible to evaluate something on its merit rather than the company producing it. I could go on a rant about our over reliance on ratings and how easily high ratings are given out (to the point where they are almost entirely meaningless), but that's useless.

Virtual reality is cool, but just because we have it doesn't mean it's perfect. Other VR, such as the Vive, is objectively better in some aspects. In my own experiences with PSVR, I didn't at all have the engrossing experience that others had and several reviews promised (and that a 10 out of 10 would indicate). I felt like I was wearing a headset. I liked some games that I played quite a bit, but I had discomfort, and my brother felt awful after playing RIGS for just a few minutes. Those are flaws inherent to VR, and I don't think you can rate the experience as perfect until it's improved upon. The game quality is also wildly inconsistent at the moment. It's not a critique more than just an inevitability early in a technology's life, but it still needs to be considered when giving something a 10 out of 10.

I'm just sick of the whining when someone says something critical and everyone writing it off (or agreeing with it when it's wrong and actually just baseless hate) just because of company allegiances.

When you spend nearly 1k for the console, controllers, camera, vr unit and games i don't really think you can use the term ungrateful. People expect it to deliver that's all. Whether it does will be down to the buyer.

I don't think that is necessary. It's normal every new technology has issues and bugs and will be flawed, without feedback how do you fix it??? Huh? Feedback is important for companies to know what needs improvement.

Some of us old gamers have stopped playing games as much because the new games really lack great and new experiences. After playing with all of the most popular VR Systems I can truly say that VR finally brings the wow factor back
to gaming. Even with all the shortcomings that VR has at the moment, you can't argue that the era of VR immersion gaming
is going to be a game changer in history ( no pun intended ) All we need now is some triple A titles to shine light for those that are not fortunate enough to foresee what the possibilities of this new medium really means for gamers.

I haven't played a non VR game since October 13th, i love PSVR. Arkham, Rigs, Bound, and Driveclub VR are terrific.

The only issue I have with the PSVR is the breakout box, it doesn't have a power off switch so now im consuming power when I don't need to doesn't matter if it's 1.50 / year or 150/year it's still my money being spent on something that shouldn't. Also, the box doesn't have HDR /4k support so when I get my PS4 Pro i will be constantly switching between the two unplugging and replugging the box up and this will likely weaken my ports. I hope sony comes out with a newer better iteration of this box so that we aren't stuck with doing this crap. I an indecisive gamer, I may want to play the PSVR until i actually play it then i'm like ehh i want to play 2k or bf1 or this or that and then I will have to unplug it and replug the whole setup is what i'm saying. It's just meh. Other than that I love the system it's awesome sauce. Worth the 500$
