How Does the Nintendo Switch Stack Up Against the PS4 and Xbox One?

The Nintendo Switch is a very different console when compared to its competition.

This thing is a dream come true for me personally. With a wife and a 4.5 year old son I don't get a ton of gaming time. Nice that I can just play on this thing, much like the Wii U, and allow my family to still have the TV. I find the majority of my gaming time was in bed, but my Wii U tablet wouldn't connect to the console in my bedroom (just out of range). I could play my PS4, but only by using a Vita and remote play. Now I have one unit which replaces that complication.

Add in the fact that I can take this thing to work with me every day and play at lunch is such a bonus. Game on the TV when I can, on the handheld when I can't.

Orejillz3165d ago

Yes, I just want to take Skyrim everywhere lol.

zeal0us3163d ago

You can already do that with an laptop ijs

4Sh0w3163d ago (Edited 3163d ago )

Well they confirmed the base is *just a docking station for TV out. I don't know how much power they can stuff behind that portable screen but without cooling fans I doubt it will be anything significant, especially cause portables also rely on battery power...so NO in terms of specs I don't see it stacking up very well against X1 or ps4.= That however doesn’t mean it can't have some kick azz games that make it worth a buy...only time will tell.

My problem is I don't want a portable, I don't see myself realistically gaming on the go= So with that being the key selling point of the Switch it's going to be a hard sell to me personally... Switch MUST HAVE A REAL KILLER APP & strong 3rd party support - that I can play on my bigscreen without this, then it's a NO buy imo.

gangsta_red3165d ago

The opposite for me.

I have my very own man cave where I can get my gaming in separate from the family. And when I'm out, I'm out. I rarely if ever have time to console type gaming on the go, which is why I was never fully interested or invested in the 3DS/Vita.

So the Switch really comes down to what type of games, support and other features it will have that will not only match Xbox/PS but surpass them.

darthv723165d ago

It's nintendo's improved version of the PSP Go. The Go did the two main things the Switch offers. Portability as well as plug into a dock to play on a bigger screen with a regular controller. Then again if you want to get technical... the Sega nomad offered plug in to big screen play as well as play on the go with the same unit and games. Even local multiplayer that the Go did not offer.

The unit is evolutionary, not revolutionary but it is still cool. It would be even better if it could play 3ds games (sans the 3d effect) on a big screen with some sort of smoothing filters to make them look good on a bigger screen.

EddieNX 3163d ago

Can you please stop comparing the Switch to a sega Nomad now please? Nintendo have done handheld to tv conectivity themselves also.

The switch has many things that make it very unique.

darthv723163d ago

Did they Eddie...? Which system. Gameboy, Gameboy color, Gameboy Micro, Gameboy Advance, DS, DSi, 3DS....?

If you mean the super gameboy or the gameboy player on GCN then not even close. Nomad is the only cart based portable system that offered tv out and local multiplayer.

No Nintendo portable offered that, not natively anyway. Modded perhaps but not by default.

So no... i will not stop saying the Nomad did this all 20 years ago because its true.

_-EDMIX-_3163d ago

@edd- why should he stop? The comments that he saying or not false , In fact when the leaks came out the only way I could even describe this was the PSP 2000 and 3000 Series because at the time it was the only thing I could think about that fit what I was reading in regards to those rumors.

At the end of the day for a matter of a fact this is not the first portable device to ever out to a television while also having the option of a regular controller.

For your information I didn't even know that the PSP Go allowed for a feature that you could use regular PlayStation controllers which I think is pretty cool but I never owned one so I didn't know that was a feature.

That's not saying that the switch isn't cool or isn't interesting it's merely saying it's not doing something that is 100% brand new or unheard of in gaming.

What Darth is bringing up is factually correct regardless of how you feel about it.

Yeah really where was this at when my kids were younger really could of used something like this then LOL

Only insofar as Nintendo's own games will be among the very best on any platform. The portability is obviously really cool too, but the graphical horsepower is going to provide some real lackluster visuals compared to the competition, and you have to be worried it won't get much third-party support, despite the list of names supporting it.

Orejillz3165d ago

I'm waiting for specs to see if its inline with at least the standard ps4 and xbox one. If so, you can expect to see some solid support as there will be versions of each game that work on those consoles.

PhoenixUp3165d ago

This article makes a mistake. You don't actually need your Vita to be on the same network as PS4 to use Remote Play. You can use the feature from anywhere in the world.

Switch on the other hands plays your console games on the go natively.

Kingthrash3603164d ago

True.
I used to scare my girl by using my vita to switch on my ps4 while she was watching tv while I was at my friends house across town. Lol.

_-EDMIX-_3163d ago

"console games on the go natively."

So a portable?

XXanderXX3164d ago

Don't care how it stacks up , I just want one now ..

CrashMania2h ago

yeah nothing is gonna dethrone nintendo in japan, especially if there's a handheld involved.

Avfe631h ago

nothing is gonna dethrone Nintendo in any country

gold_drake21m ago

not surprised, the switch is relatively cheap in japan.

Avfe635m ago

It also broke the previous records set by PS4 in the west

So it’s not just Japan. Its global.

The director of the original Silent Hill: “I look forward to seeing bold interpretations.”

Keiichiro Toyama—the creator and original director of the 1999 Silent Hill—shared his personal thoughts on the recently announced remake by Konami, reflecting on what the project means to him after more than two decades:
“I felt something similar when the game was adapted into a movie. It deeply moved me to see the names of the characters and locations I had created come to life visually, even though I wasn’t directly involved. That wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the fans and the dedication of the developers who’ve kept the series alive.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how the remake evolves this time. With the advanced technology we now have, I’m sure I’ll be surprised by how the game is reimagined. Since the original was built for the first PlayStation, there will naturally be challenges—like the camera and controls—but I’m eager to see bold and creative solutions to those elements.”

Haha Not only is bold and creatively not what the industry wants, it’s not what most people want.

They want to get scammed and pay twice for a thing they already own.

Nightcrawler8922h ago

Hope they use his vision in the game

Inverno22h ago

Was the SH2 remake even bold? Or was it more or less just a 1 to 1 over the shoulder remake?

Scissorman6h ago

it was not. it greatly expanded the areas and puzzles to the point where it felt like an entirely new game. the enemies and boss fights were given a MASSIVE upgrade. the abstract daddy fight in particular was incredible. and the team added two new endings.

Pedrof21h ago

I wouldn't hold my breath on "bold".

AMD CEO Shares Vision Behind Xbox Partnership and Next-Gen Chip Roadmap

AMD CEO Lisa Su talks about the Xbox AMD partnership, next-gen Ryzen + Radeon chips, and AI rendering tech coming to all Xbox devices.

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

InUrFoxHole1d 13h ago

They had best show 3yrs in a row. Heading for another

VenomUK1d 7h ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

Agent7521h ago

But Microsoft forgot the games.

KwietStorm_BLM1d 2h ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif1d ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin20h ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

Very interesting theory. Still not sure how MS would actually make it work.

How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is.

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

Obscure_Observer1d 18h ago

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

The marketing behind this is so heavy that I worry about the actual outcome. Why are they just not showing us the product, why all this talking in market speak?

Lightning771d 14h ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

Eonjay1d 2h ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer20h ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.
