Xbox’s Phil Spencer Weighs in on the Difference Between Project Scorpio and PS4 Pro

A lot has been said and done about the comparison between Sony’s upcoming PS4 pro and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio, despite the fact that they’re divided pretty much by a year. Xbox division head honcho Phil Spencer was asked what is the difference between the two consoles.

It has been proven time and time again that hardware power is not the only main reason for a gaming console's success.
History has it that the SNES and the PS4, although more powerful than their competition, did not rely on power alone to come out on top.
The games determined their success too.
Also its not only a balanced hardware Phil its also about a balanced software proposition. SNES & PS4 delivered great games from the west and also from the east to totally dominate globally. Their games catalogue are well balanced globally. You can say the same thing with the PC.
Xbox must solve one of its biggest problem that holds it back: the video game market outside the US.
Now that the PS4 dominates the Xbox Scorpio brand even in the west it's very unlikely to come on top globally no matter how powerful it is.

Hoffmann2748d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

I think there are around 5 big factors that make people prefer one console over the others.

The price. The available games, The graphics, the innovation (as seen with the giant success of the wii back in 2006) and maybe also if it is able to play movies and all kinds of other files.

For myself its mostly the games and to know what third party publishers will most likely create games for the platform.

Graphics are important, but as someone who grew up with an Atari 2600 it really does not matter that much to me anymore. I am happy with graphics since the Dreamcast age basically.

Hell even some of the SNES, Playstation and Sega Saturn games are still looking good.

BossBattle2747d ago

Power is important. If not we'd be ok with the PS3 and Xbox 360 and just continue making games.

2747d ago
LamerTamer2747d ago

@Ciporta1980

Except that some don't play online at all or if we do it isn't the most important thing..

DLConspiracy2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

You forgot the most important one.

Their friends.

This whole generation I was told that graphics mattered. Resolution. Tflops. Etc. Guess what. None of that matters if I can't play with my friends I made over the years.

zivtheawesome2747d ago

also one other thing: the local erea. if more people in the area bought a PS4 than an XO, then most likely the buyer would want to play with his friends which are more likely to have a PS4. but this is a local effect made mostly by the early adopters so it can't really be measured well.

I dunno. The mood around here during the XB1 and PS4 launch days would have you think otherwise. If I had a dollar for every 1080p v 900p or 900p v 720p article that popped up on this site directly comparing the power between these two consoles I'd be a millionaire now.

Plus everyone basically laughed at the Xbox One because their games looked inferior even though they provided exactly the same gameplay experience.

Now suddenly it won't be about the graphics and more about the gameplay. Amazing how the bar continues to get moved around here. Then when the next Sony console launches and suddenly it can do more than the Scorpio, the world will fall back into alignment and then graphics will matter again. Seriously?

miyamoto2747d ago

Yeah how many Nintendo fanboys said the Wii U will run Unreal Engine 4?

That power discussion is a given for any new hardware announcement.

The problem is you can't find any writer intelligent enough to discuss about the "whole package" .They tend to be selective in their articles.

While Mark Cerny revealed the PS4 in terms of how the developers contributed on its creation Phil Spencer made a huge boo boo announcing Scorpio in terms of just hardware specs and power that Xbox fans easily ate up.

Outside_ofthe_Box2747d ago

Questions for you Mr.Neonridir, what was the 'mood around here' like during the PS360 days in regards to power/resolution mattering? Was the 'mood' the same come XB1/PS4 launch?

ShowanW2747d ago

@Outside_ofthe_Box

U make no sense whatsoever...

When the PS3/360 were launching everyone only talked about PS3 cell processor and how it was going to destroy any competition out there (which included PC)

Outside_ofthe_Box2747d ago

^^^
?

Nobody boasted about superior multiplats 'even though they provided exactly the same gameplay experience'?

Aenea2747d ago

Yes, that is indeed funny stuff to see. Those resolutions never really bothered me, never could see the difference all that well without close inspection.

But, it's also crazily funny that many an Xbox fan kept saying they didn't think it was important and couldn't see the difference either (I felt they were right in that regard, since I feel gameplay is always more important and I could not easily see any differences visually either), but now the same Xbox fans changed their tune, now suddenly native resolutions make a huge difference!

It's funny as all heck, both sides are....

TFJWM2747d ago

Yes. Power is an issue but it is more of a Power X Cost issue imo. $500 with a nearly worthless addon vs $400 and better graphics at launch. Even without Kinect it was still the same price for worse graphics. If Xbox1 released at $350 with slightly worse graphics it wouldnt have been as big of an issue.

Obscure_Observer2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

@miaymoto

And yet X1 exclusives aims for performance while Sony´s aims for resolution (Granted. You got some rare cases like ND chosing a lower resolution for a smooth MP in Uncharted 4´s case). That´s a fact!

I´m all for performance over resolution any day but it´s a matter of personal taste really.

With the Ps4pro Sony will stick with resolution over performance and i for me it was a bit of a disappointment. I was really looking for a Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War 1080p/60fps.

Even with all its power, i honestly hope to MS sticks with performance over resoluion again since i could care less about. I would get 1440p/60fps or even 1080p/60fps (The Witcher 3?) over 4K 30fps any day! :)

2747d ago
DLConspiracy2747d ago

Power still doesn't matter but it certainly does when it comes to Console War braggings. You are right though they both go back and forth peacocking their purchases. Their allegiance. Probably for superiority. Which is lame.

Neonridr2747d ago

yep, don't get me wrong, both fanboy teams have been on both sides of the fence now. It's just a little funny.

I agree that it's not about the graphics. Graphics are important, sure. But it's not like Xbox One games were ugly or anything. Just like even if Scorpio comes along and can somehow do native 4K gaming, the Pro still looks fantastic and still will.

I dunno, I grew up in the early days (my first video game console was a Colecovision where you had to use your imagination to see a circle), so the games were always more important.

freshslicepizza2747d ago

of course power matters if your library consists of 80% or more of the same games as the competition. but price also matters so if scorpio is over $499 i dont think it will do well. even at $499 it might be expensive unless there is a huge difference between it and the ps4 pro/nx in terms of what it can do.

let's face it, most software sales come from games like destiny, call of duty, battlefield and fallout. those big aaa games. yes exclusives help but they pale in the total overall software sales. this is why nintendo is so far behind in sales.

Sevir2747d ago

Sony isn't going just for resolution, The machine is capable of pushing what Developers chose to push!, In the case of Horizon Zero dawn, guerilla has alredy come out and said the engine that this game is built on was never designed with 60FPS in mind, so it waas a developer's engineering choice to choose how they want to display their game, and as such a LOCKED 30fps delivering a consistently smooth experience at 1080p, of 4k is TOTALLY fine and acceptible.

Behaving like 60fps is make or break is dumb, considering, some of the most memorable games you've ever played this decade and or in the last 20 years have been games with steady performance of 30fps....

If developers want to deliver 60fps they'll format their engine from the start of development for it and they'll look at what sacrifices and consessions they'll have to make for it...

Halo 5 and gears of war 4 boast 60fps, but use adaptive consessions and cut backs to fidelity to acheive that 60fps, and use great art design to make up for graphic fidelity that is lost. , and what? we find out in those tests that the devs use all sorts of short cuts to get the performance adiquate because they cant hit 1080p 60 with graphic intensive situations 100% of the time.

Its a case of what it is, Consoles will always be fixed with hard limitations, and it will come down to developers to use technical prowess and know how to efficently use these machines. In the case of Scorpio, Itll be the same issue with the pro, increased power will increase level of performance, but You'll find that developers, will chose to push visuals while keeping 30fps. And for everyone, All we really care about is how pretty the game looks and how smooth an experience it is... If it isn't unplayable and has little to zero dips in frame rate then thats all i could ever want from a highly anticpated game.

So 4k/60,4k/30, and everything between 1080p/30 is fine. Uncharted 4, Ratcht and Clank and Horizon all look incredible at 30fps.. NO ONE complains.

ShadowWolf7122747d ago

Power became a point of discussion because the PS4 was a more powerful machine while being $100 cheaper. The Xbone was asking for $100 more for a less powerful device. That's where the Power of the Cloud came from, that's where "The Human Eye can't see above 720p/more than 30 fps" came from, it's the source of much of the ridiculousness early in the gen. Not because the PS4 was more powerful in and of itself, but because people felt the need to justify that extra $100 they dropped.

Neonridr2747d ago

@ShadowWolf712 - yeah fair enough, but if you factored in the cost of the PS4 Camera (since the Kinect could be classified as that) the difference was like $40, but I get what you are saying.

Still, many articles were around and many comments existed basically acting like the XB1 version of a game was garbage because it was only 900p like the gameplay changed in anway.

freshslicepizza2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

@Sevir
"So 4k/60,4k/30, and everything between 1080p/30 is fine. Uncharted 4, Ratcht and Clank and Horizon all look incredible at 30fps.. NO ONE complains."

just because people dont complain doesn't mean they enjoy 60fps over 30fps. naughty dog also said going back to 30fps when playing the last of us after playing it at 60fps on the remastered version was tough. we all know at the time the ps3 couldnt push those graphics at 60fps but to say people dont complain because its 30 is a misconception.

what i would like to see is more of what the makers of rise of the tomb raider are doing, that is give ps4 pro owners the OPTIONS much like on the pc. you can play locked 30fps or unlocked with better visuals.

@Neonridr,

like ShadowWolf said, the xbox one was more expensive and perfromed less than the ps4. so it was hard to validate the extra cost for kinect especially when kinect failed to deliver a richer experience. thats why microsoft dropped it and began price cutting to better match the ps4. this is why some wonder how much more scorpio will be compared to the ps4 pro and if the upgrade is worth the price difference. its almost like some hope its a lot more so that the comparisons are not as accurate. either way power does matter which is why many will upgrade to the ps4 pro from the regular system. tradein prices are going to drop again soon and the stock will grow on used ps4 systems.

@miyamoto

Why does it have to be solved?

Eastern Europe and Asia dont buy Xbox.
It is what it is.

United States and UK may not equal the world but most video game software (console wise) are purchased in North America and the UK.

Look at the attach rate for Xbox games in these 2regions alone.

Diversity in games... maybe...
But tryin to sell places that 15-16yrs have rejected it... No need to keep tryimg to crack that nut

never4get2746d ago

1. Japanese still buying windows
2. dump Xbox brand in Japan
3. sell windows gaming console
4. profit

Obscure_Observer2747d ago

There´s no need for MS to come out on top this gen. The gap is at 20 Milion units right now. Sorry, it´s not gonna happen! Mattrick´s damages the Xbox brand big time and imo Spencer should primary focus to regain gamers trust and so far he´s been doing a great job at it.

2747d ago
Bruh2747d ago

Except times change, as video games have become more obsessed with pushing visual boundaries. The focus on the environment has shifted to seeing how great games look as well. Its why the PS4 was so popular in demand at launch, it boasted every game at a higher resolution, at a cheaper price. It was a no brainer for the casual consumer and why its success is the way it is today. It surely wasn't Knack or KZ: SF that pioneered this generation's success lol

XanderZane2747d ago

I'm pretty sure he's knows it's not just about hardware when he's talking about balance. The XBox 360 actually sold very well overseas last gen. Much better then most expected. It's not just about the hardware and software either. It's about the people as well and how they feel about a company. Before the XBox was even conceived there was already a ton of hate for Microsoft outside (and inside) the U.S. Both Sony and Nintendo had already hand their brands gold stamped before Microsoft came on board. If Apple had released a game console it probably would have been more favorable right out of the gate.

krypt19832746d ago

The power will draw more games to the system regardless of what you say always has always will ...

miyamoto2746d ago

But power without ease of development will is detrimental to a console like on PS3. But like in the PS1, Xbox 360, Wii, PS4 ease of development proved helpful.

CYCLEGAMER2746d ago

So you think that Sony sold a lot of consoles because of its games??? Come on now lets be real here!

miyamoto2746d ago

Yeah. How many GTA copies moved PS2s,PS3 and PS4s?
How many PS3s did MGS4 moved?
How many PSPs did Monster Hunted sold?
ETC.

babyhand2746d ago

The difference is 1 is out and 1 is not.
Choice is good, good day

noksucow732746d ago

Power does come into play sometimes. Saturn wasn't able to compete and the Dreamcast wasn't able to hold ground with the capabilities of the ps2. I agree about the games though.

miyamoto2746d ago

Power gives opportunities for devs to make great games that move consoles.
Technically superior games like
Starfox, Chrono Trigger and FFVI moved lots of SNES units
MGS4, Uncharted 2, GT5 & The Last of Us moved lots of PS3s

“Spencer started by recognizing that describing a console isn’t as simple as dropping a number. Within the development team the keyword for the creation of Project Scorpio has been “balance.” The balance between memory, CPU and GPU is extremely important.”

“The main point of Project Scorpio is that it’s very balanced, and Spencer believes that the games that will run on Scorpio will be different from those that we’ll see this year.”

Interesting. MS will definitely not repeat the mistakes they made with Xbox One. They wouldn't want that powerful 6tf GPU to be bottlenecked by a weak CPU and 8gig of Ram. This actually adds more credence to the recent rumors about Scorpio using a more recent CPU tech. I can't wait for the reveal.

Bigpappy2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

Phil is great. He knows what a great console should be and is making one Monster of a console that will satisfy fans willing to pay for it.

miyamoto, above, made the comment that Phil only talked power when he announced Scorpio. I can tell by his comment that he did wAtchison the announcement. Phil didn't announce Scorpio by himself, he had 3rd party developers along with in house people talking about what to expect from the console and one engineer called it a MONSTER. I am so temper to trade up to the S, which I may still do, but I know I want Scorpio day one. I suspect it will release early Fall, which is less than a year already.

The guy in the comments doing the Trump impression was really, really good. But Spencer is nothing like Trump. He just wants to hold on to those details until E3. You guys just need to be patient. There in no need for him to compare Pro to Scorpio. Scorpio will speak for itself. When it's presented, you will see the difference for yourself

Angeljuice2747d ago

They said that the X1 was all about "balance" too, so I don't see how using the exact same design philosophy means they "definitely will not repeat the mistakes they made with Xbox One".

" PS4 has an advantage in raw power but XBox One has been designed around balancing the components, only time will tell whose strategy comes out on top".

christocolus2747d ago

“They said that the X1 was all about
"balance" too”

And what does that have to do with Scorpio? Scorpio isn't using the same tech or design philososophy as Xbox One and Phil Spencer ( a former game dev) is in charge of Xbox this time. So I don't see the reason for bringing up comments made 4years ago. It makes no sense. To get optimal hardware performance for Scorpio they need to make sure they hit the right balance with Ram, Cpu and Gpu.. Everyone knows that.

Angeljuice2747d ago

@Christocolus

I was responding to a comment that said *THE REASON* Microsoft won't repeat the same mistakes as X1 this time is because they designed the console around "balance".

I was pointing out that the X1 was designed with the exact same design philosophy as the Scorpio, so it doesn't protect them from those mistakes.

nitus102747d ago

In some respects, that is a double-edged sword. If games come out for the Scorpio are unplayable on the XB1 there are around 22million plus gamers that will feel like they have been slapped in the face.

TheUndertaker852747d ago

Why? Do the 60+ million who bought 360 or PS3 feel slapped because of the existence of XOne or PS4? Do the 50 million PS3 owners that didn't buy Move feel slapped because they can't play Move exclusive titles? How about the current 35+ million who didn't buy PSVR? Original Xbox One buyers that didn't get the same features as those available on Xbox One S?

If the experience is justified people will purchase rather than feel slapped.

Typical MS PR BS just say nebulous things that have no meaning and/or could mean absolutely anything.

Tell me Phil what are these "things that will be different" exactly?

What can Xbox do that can't currently be done on PC's that are twice as powerful? Whats the big revolution in gaming going to be? I mean it's not like that past two generations have basically been exactly the same except for better graphics...

Yup. Just constant PR. People fail to recognize that these articles are occupying game related articles space.

Yes, no one has a high end PC's and PC gaming is dead. Certainly that's why Microsoft is making all their games available on PC.

Kryptix2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

You think time is stuck and Microsoft are the only ones that can move. LOL

Scorpio will be more powerful than current 2016 PCs, but Nvidia will have their new Volta GPU chips next year which will greatly surpass 6TF. Anyone that can use the GTX 1000 series and even 900 will be able to just purchase the new Volta GPUs and run it without having to upgrade other parts because these chips have become more efficient at not just voltage, but manufacturing. Upgrading also becomes cheaper over time as new technologies arrive.

No lie, Scorpio will be a beast as a console in late 2017, but PC tech has had faster progress while getting cheaper to buy on the older parts for a good while. A person can currently build a machine for $500 with way more power than current consoles.

http://www.pcworld.com/arti...

That setup alone will help you get started & just upgrade when you need to. You'll be able to run almost all games at max settings in 1080p 60fps. That's 500+30 with the Windows 10 product key at a savings site. More for whatever mouse you want. That's 4.9TF and can do 4k. The, "high end PCs cost a fortune" is a myth cause people also add in the monitor pricing where any HDTV can work with it. 1080p60fps monitors are really cheap nowadays and you can wait til next year when 4k TVs become cheaper. I mean, max settings at 1080/60 looks really good.

Build that, have fun. No need to wait for a Scorpio to play the same games with higher graphics.

Obscure_Observer2747d ago

@Ashlen

Yeah. Look at all these Xbox One S sales in NA and Uk. It speak NUMBERS. Most gamers already know about the Play Anywhere program and guess what? Apparently hey don´t care. The Xbox One S is a sucess and we are more than a year away from the Scorpio release. ;)

nitus102747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

@Obscure_Observer

The actual difference of XB1 (assuming XB1 and XB1s) to PS4 in NA and the UK was around 46,700 in favor of the XB1. yet around the world (you know outside NA and the UK) the PS4 still came out on top.

BTW. I am well and truly aware that North America is composed of the Canada, USA, Mexico and a few other countries.

Nothing nebulous about it.....The Scorpio won't be bottlenecked like the PS4 Pro.

More Powerful GPU
More Powerful CPU
Faster RAM
More RAM

What does it mean? It simply means it will do everything the PS4 Pro Significantly better.

threefootwang2747d ago

I'd just like to get this first comment in before the Sony Defence Squad attacks!

Many-hat52747d ago

All true 343 -Well,as far as we can know at this stage. Curious though, noone is mentioning Disk I/O. A standard SSD already saturates SATAIII, and with Native 4K coming, that's an awful lot of data to be shifting around.I'm hoping that MS will be at least considering NVMe for project Scorpio. To my mind, the idea of still putting up with load screens and waits, when in all other areas, the scorpio will excel -for a console, seems out sync. Imagine, a disk I/O interface diesigned for the true potential of SSD. Now that would impress.

conanlifts2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

Would you rather he said.. " we won't screw things up and put an overpowered gpu with too little memory and a weak cpu". That would have been a big dig at the ps4 pro, instead of taking the diplomatic route like he did.
