What Happens to Female Playable Characters When Gender isn't an Issue?

Deva Gregory writes: "There are lots of games that let you play as women, but what’s worrisome is that playable female characters surprise us. What should surprise us is a game that lacks playable female characters, and more so, characters whose identity is subscribed only to their gender."

Why should it? The overwhelming majority of gamers are male (don't buy those 50% nonsense surveys that include candy crush). Businesses make games that will appeal to their markets. Can't blame a business for wanting to make money.

ion6663198d ago

Your right, just go to a tournament of any kind. There is a majority male presence of roughly 85 to 90 percent male.

zeuanimals3197d ago

Games used to be marketed towards the whole family with the Atari. This all changed after the video game crash in the 80s and the rise of Nintendo. At this point, stores started to move the video game's section to the toy aisle rather than keep it in the electronics aisle, and the toy aisle was split between boys and girls. Nintendo then had to choose which aisle to place the NES in, and they chose the boy's aisle and they heavily marketed their games toward boys. Since then, games have moved out of the toy aisle but the idea that games are for boys due to marketing has stuck. It's not Nintendo's fault, but it is dumb that it stays like that.

So yeah, the majority of gamers are male, but there's a ton of potential sales that devs aren't getting because of the idea that games are for boys. If they can change that perception, then they could essentially double the number of people who play console and PC games, meaning more money. Remember, "can't blame a business for wanting to make money", exactly. Somehow, the film industry has figured out how to have large female audiences for films that are typically targeted towards men, and I'm sure if the games industry tried, they could do the same too. The make it or break it scenario in gaming will significantly reduce if the audience grew due to having more female members, meaning so many studios won't go under anymore.

wolokowoh3197d ago

While there are factually more males than females playing games. I'm not arguing a percentage but there are certainly a lot more than previous generations. The gender role thing that is slowly dissolving away not just in gaming but everywhere. My nieces play with G.I. Joes and watch DBZ. Am I responsible for making the introduction? Yes, but if they didn't like why are they doing when I'm not around?

Assuming that it has to be a male character is stupid on the industry's part. I'm male and usually play as female when given a choice. I don't have gender identity issues, I just prefer it that way. Possible two reasons: If I have to play a game for x amount of hours I'd rather be looking at a female body because heterosexual male. A character doesn't have to be my sex for me to be able to identify with them, assuming I do at all.

My question is "How does having all male leads appeal to guys? " I can't identify with current iterations Marcus from GeOW or Kratos from GOW on any level other than their grief. However if the characterization is done well in a game, it doesn't really matter male or female or hell gay or transgender whatever they call themselves. If the character is meant to identified with and that is executed well, I identify with them on a human level. Now if its shoehorned in there for the sake of pandering to SJWs like Marvel is doing that a whole other thing. That's lazy. Horizon and Tomb Raider is how you do it right. They're female because they were always intended to be women.

Some of my favourite games have female playable characters, for example Alice Madness Returns, Beyond Good and Evil, Tomb Raider, Remember Me. I don't think there is an issue. Perhaps just people who think about this stuff too much and make a storm in a teacup for themselves.

drizzom3198d ago (Edited 3198d ago )

Bingo. It becomes all you think about and it ends up consuming you and coloring the way you see the world around you. And now that your psyche is all screwed up, you start to see issues where in reality there really isn't any. Its something people can rarely detect in themselves and they live their whole lives trapped inside their own mind.

garyanderson3198d ago

I think the issue is that there's so few of them.

Vits3198d ago

And that really isn't a issue, when you consider that most people who buy these games are men and supposedly the player must identify with the protagonist.

The only point of this article that I agree with, is that the players were surprised to find that Samus was a woman. But that was in 1986, a time when female protagonists in games was indeed rare, but that does not resonate with the times we live in today.

Princess_Pilfer3198d ago (Edited 3198d ago )

I got as far as the word patriarchy before I stopped reading. That term is almost always a direct indicator that it's 3rd wave feminist nonsense, playing into their little victim cult.

(I'm a half black lesbian, lest someone think I'm a straight white male trying to hold onto my "privelage" or some crap.)

I'd love more female characters, and I do feel that in any game where the protagonist isn't a set character for plot reasons should allow me to play one. That said, I'd rather have good characters than female characters. Seeing as most developers are guys (and based on women in generals lack of interest in tech fields that's not changing,) and most of the AAA target audience are guys, expecting AAA studios to write many female main characters in the first place is iffy, and expecting them to consistently do it well is downright dumb. It takes a particularly good writer to be able to write a character who was socialized essentially from birth (and has natural tendancies towards much of that behavior to begin with) in a way completely different from them, so it's unreasonable to expect most male writers to be able to write good female characters unless you're in a "gender blind" universe where being male or female (for some reason) doesn't have an impact on their personality and how they were raised.

You wanna see it done right? If you're a dude, go play Life is Strange and contrast all the subtle ways she acts and is reacted too differently than you might be because she's a woman, right down to how her social circles work. That is a good female character by a good writer who knew that while being a woman should be pretty far down the list in terms of important character traits it *is* a character trait (in part because of biology and in part because of how we're raised) and it reverberates through not just all of the more important things but also how people respond to whatever we happen to be doing.

Then compare that to a Dragon Age Inquisition, and laugh at how comparatively shallow the characters and society are by pretending that a major aspect of every person in their world (their gender) just doesn't exsist the vast majority of the time, and so has little impact on their society. Not that Bioware games have bad writing, they don't, just that it's recently it's very simplistic by comparison.)

Point is, I'd take 1 Max, Yuna or Chie (Or indeed Joel, Squall or Ceaser) every 2 years over 50 Sara every 6 months because Sara is a good character who so happens to be female, Chie is a good female character (and Joel a good male character,) which means with all the cultural stuff and societal expectations baked in, and there is a big freaking difference. A difference I just don't think most (even most good) writers are actually capable of reflecting properly with female characters because *they haven't experienced something like it,* which means it takes a lot of imagination and empaty, as well as skill, for the (mostly male) writers to get it right.

I think I went overboard with my rant. Sorry.

carcarias3197d ago (Edited 3197d ago )

No need to apologise, sometimes the most well thought out comments require more writing in order to fully flesh out the points one is trying to make....and you made several good ones.

I think people who assume, or push, that gender and sexual orientation are the main priorities in determining the way to create a character's personality and motivations are actually belittling the diversity we have as human beings, as individuals, and are therefore missing the whole point of creating good, compelling entities.

Lukejrl3198d ago

I agree with some points of this article. I guess i never viewed playing as a female character a problem once i passed 8 years of age so i never really though about it. But i find that if all you do is focus on the negative you will find something to complain about. We are constantly changing our viewpoints. Things are getting better not worse.

sdcard4gb3198d ago

Better ? We are shoulder-deep in DLC and pre-order bullshit culture with games taking almost 100 million dollars and half a decade to make into a formulaic samey soulless product and you call this better ?

FullmetalRoyale3198d ago (Edited 3198d ago )

While I am no advocate of preorder nonsense, that is not at all what this discussion is about. You are retorting to something that is not being discussed.
-When it comes to the topic at hand(which might be getting a little long in the tooth), we have examples of great characters. Though I don't think it was a huge problem to begin with, and no doubt part of it comes from the technology we have today, we do see improvements.
-When it comes to characters; I like good characters. Be them black, white, teen, adult, male, or female. A character like Ellie from TLoU is well wrtitten and acted, and it makes her a compelling character. I think it's a problem when a character is just a checkbox. Lee Everett is a good character that is black. I don't see him as a black character, it's not what defines him to me. Same with Ellie, Triss, Liara, Clementine, and Yennifer are greatly realized characters first.

Scatpants3198d ago

Blanket statement is inaccurate.

_-EDMIX-_3197d ago

Might as well quit gaming bud.

Yes... a company will charge you for extra content.

You don't need to buy DLC, you don't need to pre order anything you don't want too.....I mean that is up to you. I don't see that stopping and I barely see that as "worse" when its 100% up to you to either buy or not buy. If you feel this way like you keep spamming on here to oblivion...make your own game with zero DLC, zero pre-order content, less then 100 million and in less then 5 years.

Enjoy lol. MOST of us play games for fun, not for political reasons or moral reasons etc.

Thats......thats just strange. Do you buy bad games because they have no dlc, no pre-order content, cost less then 100 mill etc?

Unless you are doing that, its hard to see your issue with those features if you may not even be prepared to BUY something out of this strange freedom fighter concept.

No one is buying BAD games for principle or for gamer peace and being fair etc. Those concepts don't exist in business, sounds like stupidity to me bud. How many honest developers are you going poor to buy content form regardless of actual quality or if you even like it?

Again...I question why you even play games, if those optional things are issues to you. Better is subjective, not all are seeing gaming as this doom and gloom. You seem to paint the world as if hell has frozen over lol.

Why even keep coming on here if you hate the state of gaming so much? Maybe this hobby is dead to you then bud, don't know what to say. Not sure how many developers will keep gladly getting paid the same thing for 10 years with a smile.

Would you work for over 10 years for the same pay while having MORE work?

I have a feeling that if these female characters were more traditionally feminine, they'll be ridiculed for being stereotypes or being confined to gender roles or something like that. But if we were to take all that away, it'll be ridiculed for lacking a female identity and not feeling too natural.

I don't get what people want nowadays.

Scatpants3198d ago

They want to complain. It has very little to actually do with games.

Ristul3198d ago

Exactly, for as long as they have something to complain about, there is money for them to be had in the system. Feminism had a role to play, and now that it has played it's part and there are less and less actual issues to consider and deal with, they find themselves clinging to their superfluous jobs in any way they can - even if it means fabricating or exaggerating a problem.

madpuppy3198d ago

It's become a career for some people, take Anita Sarkeesian for example, have you ever heard the gobbledygook that comes out of her mouth? It would give a College Professor a Migraine. But, she has made a very profitable career out of it, even being invited on talk shows and college campuses to speak.
Anyone that uses gender or race as a means to become rich is deplorable.

_-EDMIX-_3197d ago

"I have a feeling that if these female characters were more traditionally feminine, they'll be ridiculed for being stereotypes"

Let them. Females just like males come in all forms. How is really traditionally male or female anyway? We have so many different forms of people that I think developers are free to explore those ideas with their characters and add life to them.

Red_Renegade3198d ago

i don't get the question. isn't gender only an issue because people are making it an issue? and who's surprised at playable female characters? this is all so weird.

Godmars2903198d ago

Its that female characters are considered to be objectified for being female characters by people who largely only see female characters as being objectified.

ravinash3198d ago

It's not so much the gamers who have an issue but rather the people marketing them.
Their the ones who still think gamers are all young or teenage white guys.

I'm already dreading all the cross generation games and remasters we'll see with the next round of consoles.

LonDonE76d ago

lmao this is getting ridiculous but thing is if people keep buying them.. then why would they stop making them?
Peeps STOP BUYING this game.. that actually hurts me to say this as the last of us is high up on my greatest games of all times.. its one of the few games i played through start to finish 3/4 times back to back as i loved it so much. But sony need to stop, give us a Resistance 3 remaster, i would love and buy that.. such an underated series as was killzone.
Or give us infamous.. so many great series and titles i would gladly buy but they just want to keep giving us last of us.

I am done buying that game.. i would only buy part 2 remaster if they remade it and kept joel alive, or i am not interested. Hate last of us 2s story killing off joel.. the actual game is stunning and incredible, they improved so much in the gameplay department but i hate the story with a passion.

Inverno76d ago

And HBO just announced season 3 even tho LoU2 couldn't possibly be so long that it wouldn't be able to fit in 1 season. They're just milking it at this point.

darthv7276d ago

speaking of the HBO series... I felt they should have made part 1 across two seasons, then address part 2 in seasons 3 and 4. so now i have a feeling they rushed through part 1 in season 1 to make season 2 a cliff hanger with Joel's impending demise being the starting point to Season 3.

-Foxtrot76d ago

I love how they decided to rush, chop and change things for Season 1 to get through the game yet for TLOU Part II it’s like “we’re going to do multiple seasons and take our time”

Inverno76d ago

Okay after seeing that there's only 7 episodes I take it back. Though I think it's incredibly stupid not to have just made the season longer. Another season just to finish what could've just been a 13 episode season seems counterintuitive but aiight. I put that on HBO tho.

Profchaos76d ago

At this point we are at Skyrim in terms of frequency. Skyrim was one per generation. If you exclude VR Skyrim we've now exceeded it

Skyrim 1 ps360 2 PS4/x1/vr 1 ps5/sx

Tlou 4
Skyrim 4

Not quite. Skyrim had:

PS3/360/PC
PS4/X1
VR
Switch
Skyrim Special Edition PC/PS4/X1
Skyrim Special Edition PS5/XSX

Also add skyrim bundles like the one below and all the humble bundles since that's what everyone is doing here

darthv7276d ago

@Chris, LoU is getting just as bad by milking the same user base. At least Skyrim was able to sell to a wider audience via different platforms.

Christopher76d ago

@darthv72: I don't know why you're telling me that. I only corrected on number of Skyrim re-releases/ports/etc. I didn't say anything else.

Profchaos76d ago

@christopher guess I forgot just how much was out I think the special editions are technically one release despite being cross platform though would the Alexa version count

Christopher76d ago

@Profchaos: I guess, but I'd consider it a separate release since it rolled them into one at a later date but definitely there is a PS5/XSX version with PS5/XSX supported updates specific to them.

Chevalier76d ago

"LoU is getting just as bad by milking the same user base"

Weird. Like 35% of PS5 owners are NEW to Playstation. Plus this is really for new fans from the TV series for season 2 of TLOU.

I recall the same idiotic comments when the 1st one was remade just before TLOU TV Series came out and it went on the be one of the best selling games that year.

So maybe get your FACTS straight. Unlike Skyrim getting literally releases in 3 generations and 10 releases.

RE4 w Motion Controls - Wii

RE4 Remake - PS5, Xsex

1 Remake and the bunch are Remasters… how, I mean how—Y’know what, it doesn’t matter anymore…

Loktai86d ago

@darthv72 Uh yes. Yes it has. They milked BOTW across Wii U and switch and they STILL want 40+ for it new and never discounted it. They made "remasters" of older zelda games as well on switch and in the past onto the other gameboy platforms from the older platforms. They have done the same with Mario. They port the paper mario games and mario RPG to switch. And now I PROMISE you they are going to show "enhancements" for those same games on Switch 2. I PROMISE you thats going to get mentioned, maybe even tomorrow. Last of us Part 1 has been across techncially 3 generations, but 2 has been 2- and JUST BARELY 2 because it released just a few months before the PS5 did - and so if that counts as milking it, what do you call breath of the wild on Wii U then going to switch or Twilight Princess coming uot on gamecube and Wii - OR ZELDA WIND WAKER HD coming out?

Clearly a guy with business acumen! Why would Sony want to rebundle games and release them in time for the 2nd season of TLOU to release? I mean the last time a bunch of idiots laughed at Sony then guess what? TLOU part 1 for PS5 only hit top 5 sales and kept popping onto charts throughout the year?! Lol

86d ago
Chevalier86d ago

"Skyrim sure, but the other two... not so much"

Multiple Mario and Zelda games have made 2 generations. Maybe you guys forget that over a 3rd of the gamers on Playstation have NEVER owned a Playstation system before and some are coming into it as a result of the TV show.

People said the EXACT same crap when the 1st game got released on PS5, but, it ended up being one of the best selling games the year it came out.

Also for all the idiots complaining. Playstation at least offer $10 upgrades for some of these games. Have you EVER seen a re-release by Nintendo, Xbox, Bethesda offer that?! No I didn't think so.

darthv7285d ago

releasing a newer version because the previous version is not physically compatible is not quite the same as taking a perfectly good existing game that already works on the newer platform and repackaging it under a remaster brand for that newer platform and then repackaging it AGAIN for the same platform.

And that whole line of *insert people here may not have had a PS before* is a line of BS. PS2 is the most selling platform in history... chances are very good a high percentage upgrade to the PS3 and then upgraded to the PS4 and are upgrading again for the PS5. So dont give me that line of bologna. you'd rather swallow every bit of Sony propaganda instead of call them out for milking (and yes this is milking) this game. You know there will be a PS6 version and likely a PS7 remaster.

Of course i am purely speculating on the 6 & 7 but there is a high degree of probability because of what they did already between 3, 4 & 5. And you defending even the $10 upgrade when most of the XB games get free upgrades is just another sign of your blind loyalty. I didnt think it possible and gave you benefit of the doubt but now I can see i was totally wrong.

Chevalier85d ago (Edited 85d ago )

@Darth

Again your examples are absolutely terrible. Repackaged games for new audiences isn't new with the high cost of development. This release is timed for people that are new to Playstation coming from watching season 2 of the TV show. If you're surprised and annoyed by this then stop gaming then. It will happen if there's some new Skyrim, Fallout, Doom or whatever TV show comes out too.

Also you're the guy who defends Xbox for this crap too. Skyrim releases were done while owned by Xbox.

Also you mentioned the PS2, repackaged games happened all the time then too. If you think that repackaged games is going to go away with the skyrocketing cost of development is going away then sorry cover your eyes and plug your ears and pretend like an idiot then. You will be complaining daily soon.
