HDR at no charge for all 40+ million PS4 owners! That in itself is a megaton feature. I'm liking the improvements!

P_Bomb2776d ago

Looks good. Glad to see they're bringing back the 'friends who also play this' tab.

Genuine-User2776d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

I'm looking forward to the update tomorrow!

Here's an official video: https://youtu.be/y2kvMCXdqj...

It can't be a coincidence that Sony is releasing their system software update on the same day iOS 10 comes out. Can it?

Especially after the fact that the PlayStation meeting was on the same day as the Apple event.

Wonder what's going on.

Edit: I sound like a conspiracy theorist :p

@darthv72 4K TVs can upscale. I'm assuming you don't know that since the YouTuber you linked claimed 4K TVs don't upscale.

darthv722776d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

@liquid, not sure about that youtuber seeing as he said his tv did not have the same chip as the xb1s but i think it's pretty cool it even does that.

I knew it had a pass thru but never thought it actually upscaled what it passed thru. Seriously that is pretty cool and it got marked as inappropriate. I feel it is totally appropriate with the HDR update coming and all. It is just one alternative to making the original PS4 display in both HDR and 4k especially if the chip in an XB1S is 'rumored' to be better than the upscalers in tv's.

Seriously this is new to me and i thought it interesting to fans on both sides.

edit: judging by the disagrees, everyone else knew about this but me. Oh well... late to the party as usual.

freshslicepizza2775d ago

good update, folders is a big feature many wanted. hdr upgrade is great and for free. 2-step verification is a must. i guess changing your psn id would be too difficult though.

iceman062775d ago

@Genuine-user...I got the foil if you got the basement shelter and rations!!! 😀

Ju2775d ago

Seriously, darth, this does not give you a better picture than getting it directly from the PS4 to the TV. If anything you add another factor of lag into the equation. It will not magically render the game in HDR nor does it improve the resolution anywhere different than a 4K TV would handle a 1080p signal - by upscaling it to the native resolution. You wer flagged correctly. This is a PS4 System update thread. Please get out with your XB viral marketing here!

no charge for those that can use it ;)

otherwise that is a feature locked behind a pretty significant paywall :P

There are a lot of great features in this update though, so I am excited for sure.

Rimeskeem2776d ago

Hot damn guys he was just joking.

Neonridr2776d ago (Edited 2776d ago )

@Rimeskeem - so was I. It's a great feature, for those that can use it. The paywall comment was merely a joke, hence the tongue face at the end of it. You know, having to go out and buy a 4K TV to take advantage of it.

Sad that unless someone puts a /s at the end or the words just kidding that people can't seem to grasp the context of a statement.

The fact that I ended with some positives should have been enough to show that I am happy for the update.

Goldby2775d ago

"You know, having to go out and buy a 4K TV to take advantage of it. "

Thatsd why you steal a 50inch 4k tv. cant be that hard to slip under your shirt

EM I RIGHT!

Sparta072775d ago

Wow sony giving out something for free is a bad thing... I guess..
I didn't know that

RosweeSon2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

No different to 4K on an Xbox one S then is it. I just can't believe everyone's forgotten the folders ;)

Neonridr2775d ago

@RosweeSon - it is exactly the same with the Xbox One S.

I am super psyched for the folders. Now I can organize my titles by genre.

iceman062775d ago

The internet is killing the fine art of sarcasm!!! 👍👍👍

BrettAwesome2775d ago

Hahaha 😃 yeah. Like a 3000$ paywall if you want 65"

badz1492775d ago

HDR is behind a $300 paywall on the Xbone though. VR is behind another paywall on top of that other paywall too or you can bundle them up next year under the Scorpio paywall. My guess is $500!

daynnight3652775d ago

Why the dumbass downvotes here, it's true, if u don't have a hdr equipped tv , you're SOL

It's a credit to Sony for doing this, Now Microsoft where is my HDR for my Xbox One?

Oh that's right you want me to buy another Xbox One....

Muzikguy2775d ago

But I thought Sony's vision for the PS4 was bad compared to Microsoft's?! Isnt everyone crying that MS won 2 NPDs in a row and Scorpio is poised to be the next best console? I'm so confused.....
/s

I can't wait for this update!!

XanderZane2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

They'll probably update it next year. The XB1 Slim is a much better system then the original XBox One anyways. Got a bit more power and can upscale your games to 4K. With the Scorpio so far away, an upgrade to XB1 S isn't a bad move for people who just got a 4K HDTV. Why anyone wants the PS4 Slim is beyond me. Especially after this update. You can just keep the original PS4 or upgrade to the PS4 Pro. The PS4 Slim is really an afterthought. No 4K Blu-Ray. No upscaling of games to 4K. Waste of money.

UCForce2775d ago

Now that's an update ! Good Work, Sony !

81BX2775d ago

Do the games have to be updated for hdr

Ju2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

Yes, they do. And you'll need a TV which supports it. Currently only 4K TVs support HDR while HDR is not necessarily tied into a 4K resolution.

81BX2775d ago

Ah sweet. Just got a 4k tv supports hdr. Now just waiting for uncharted 4 to update then

XanderZane2775d ago

Yes and if you get a 4K UHDTV you need to make sure it supports HDR. There are 2 HDR formats. HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR. You want the HDR10. Not all 4K UHDTV support HDR.

http://www.howtogeek.com/26...

Developers will all have to patch their games to take advantage of HDR on the PS4 and PS4 Slim.

Jamesx82x2775d ago

You still need a tv capable of showing HDR.

solid_snake36562775d ago

Only problem is, I don't think any of the developers have patched any games out so far to support hdr. And their are no blurays out their that support hdr, only 4k blurays support hdr.

S2Killinit2775d ago

Looks really cool. I like it.

AnubisG2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

So now that the update is out, what do you guys who are able to use HDR think of it?

Now that I've seen it on PS4 I don't think it's that big of a deal as Sony made it out to be. It's not something that anyone should be excited about. That is my personal opinion.

solid_snake36562775d ago

So far their are no games that have received hdr patches, and their are no HD blurays that have HDR. So far only 4k blurays have hdr, so I don't know what you watched lol.

AnubisG2775d ago

What I did is turn HDR on along with that other option underneath it and checked out witcher 3 with HDR on and without.

I didn't know that games needed an HDR patch.

solid_snake36562775d ago

Yup they will need to be patched, just like when the PS4 Pro comes games will need to be patched so you can view them in 4k.

FamilyGuy2775d ago

I don't think HDR will be in this update. I've been on 4.00 in beta for like a month and there was no HDR option.

XanderZane2775d ago

Yes and I like the new home button menu with customization. My only question is will this update finally allow us to use external HDD drive in a USB port? I guess music CD are still out of the question for this gen.

:)

HDR TV owners let us know how awesome it is.

Thank you Sony.

Edit:

I'm counting on you.

:)

Wallstreet372776d ago

I'll definitely let u know as I bought av4k HDR enabled TV on memorial week when it was on sale as a preemptive measure for neo aka pro. I'll let you guys know how it goes :)

darthv722775d ago

Yes please do. Did you get one with HDR10 or Dolby Vision or one that does both?

joeorc2775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

@darthv7223m ago
[Yes please do. Did you get one with HDR10 or Dolby Vision or one that does both?]

Q&A

Q: Will PS4 Pro include support for Dolby Vision HDR?

A: There are currently no plans to support Dolby Vision.

I think that is pretty clear...

Surprise! Sony says HDMI 2.0 is just a firmware update away

I know I was just pointing out that many times TV manufacturing companies are starting to ship
Undatable HDMi controllers in TV's also ..since the Standards may change again..lol

@joe

It was about a TV so the question made sense...

Tussin1872775d ago

Glad you got your TV. But doesn't the game have to support HDR to take advantage of it? Just curious.

Wallstreet372775d ago

Darth.....

I bought an entry level 4k with HDR enabled from sharp (HDR 10) so it won't be as good as a Sammy or Sony but I'll def let you guys know how the HDR looks.
I game on an Epson 1080p 3D projector and 140 inch screen that really looks good and I spent money on just for my ps4 so I didn't want to go crazy on the 4k TV but it looks good overall.
When update hits tomorrow I'll try HDR enabled games for you guys.

nitus102775d ago (Edited 2775d ago )

With regard to the HDR format war.

There are two HDR formats as everyone should be aware, the first is HDR10 which is an open format and is royalty free, the second is Dolby Vision HDR with a proprietary format and requires a royalty payment to use.

When Sony provides the HDR update to all PS4's it will be HDR10 not Dolby Vision HRD for very obvious reasons. Likewise for the XB1 slim since at the moment it will only support HDR10 again for obvious reasons although Microsoft has said that they are in negotiations for Dolby Vision HDR support as well.

For readers wondering what the obvious reasons are. I don't know what the consortium for Dolby Vision HDR charges but let's say it's $10 per seat (they also charge for movies as well). For Sony that would be over $400 million in fees while for Microsoft, the costs would be for each XB1 slim sold.

Note: I did some searching for Dolby Vision HDR license fees but so far I can't find an exact figure. So the $10 USD price is a guess although I do know that Dolby charges that for each sound system that has "Dolby Sound" support.

Wallstreet372775d ago

Yes ppl the content must be HDR enabled to be able to see the HDR gains.

solid_snake36562775d ago

@Tussin187 Yes games will need an HDR patch. Also their aren't any blurays out that support HDR either. From my understanding only 4k blurays support hdr.

I have a 4k tv setup LG UH8500V which is capable of displaying both HDR formats, HDR 10 and Dolby, i have already watched a couple of 4k videos on Youtube and Netflix and i can already see a significant difference with regards to the richness of the colour depth and contrast brightness.

The best way i can describe it is that everything looks like it has had a brand new shiny fresh coat of glossy paint. What was before slightly dull now zings with enhanced detail, and parts of the screen which were black before now incredibly reveal details that were lost and unable to be properly shown on my 4k Daredevil series.

The jump of 4k chequer board along with HDR is going to make an absolutely astounding difference to our gamer experience. It's just a pity that Sony were unable to get this message across during their somewhat muted PS4 Pro reveal conference. Games that previously looked like Rosie O'Donnell will now look like Jessica Alba on the Pro.

Sevir2775d ago

Currently no games on PS4 that supports it... we'll have to wait for ND and Sucker Punch to deploy the patch on Nov 10th...

Much like there'lol only be 2 XBO S games that support HDR which don't release till end of the year.

Speak_da_Truth2776d ago

Great update. IMO the best since the Ps4 came out.

dantesparda2775d ago

Yeah, I've had it since the beta and its good, the new quick menu is really, really good, folders work great and the whole thing just looks better and feels faster than before. You can mass delete saves now too, shows the last time someone was online and a bunch of other little unannounced things.

Reckless_Love2775d ago

Really great to hear they've added the "last online" feature back from PS3. it's bugged me since making the jump that it didn't have that little bit of info. Handy when I'm trying to figure out if my semi-nocturnal friend is likely to get up anytime soon.

formanbradley2776d ago

The first update where I don't have to rage in the comments! Nice!

formanbradley2774d ago (Edited 2773d ago )

Yeah... when simple stuff like folders take this long to release and my library is brimmed out with things I don't own anymore.

Gladiator’s Arena review - Games Asylum

Games Asylum: "Even though the Vampire Survivors influenced ‘auto shooter’ genre isn’t long in the tooth, I’m still surprised that it has taken this long for a Roman gladiator-themed rendition to come along – especially with a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 box office hit Gladiator imminent. It’s thematically perfect, with its circular arena in which one man stands alone against hordes of enemies, grabbing loot as they survive one wave to the next."
