I knew it had a pass thru but never thought it actually upscaled what it passed thru. Seriously that is pretty cool and it got marked as inappropriate. I feel it is totally appropriate with the HDR update coming and all. It is just one alternative to making the original PS4 display in both HDR and 4k especially if the chip in an XB1S is 'rumored' to be better than the upscalers in tv's.

Seriously this is new to me and i thought it interesting to fans on both sides.

Seriously, darth, this does not give you a better picture than getting it directly from the PS4 to the TV. If anything you add another factor of lag into the equation. It will not magically render the game in HDR nor does it improve the resolution anywhere different than a 4K TV would handle a 1080p signal - by upscaling it to the native resolution. You wer flagged correctly. This is a PS4 System update thread. Please get out with your XB viral marketing here!

They'll probably update it next year. The XB1 Slim is a much better system then the original XBox One anyways. Got a bit more power and can upscale your games to 4K. With the Scorpio so far away, an upgrade to XB1 S isn't a bad move for people who just got a 4K HDTV. Why anyone wants the PS4 Slim is beyond me. Especially after this update. You can just keep the original PS4 or upgrade to the PS4 Pro. The PS4 Slim is really an afterthought. No 4K Blu-Ray. No upscaling of games to 4K. Waste of money.

I bought an entry level 4k with HDR enabled from sharp (HDR 10) so it won't be as good as a Sammy or Sony but I'll def let you guys know how the HDR looks.
I game on an Epson 1080p 3D projector and 140 inch screen that really looks good and I spent money on just for my ps4 so I didn't want to go crazy on the 4k TV but it looks good overall.
When update hits tomorrow I'll try HDR enabled games for you guys.

With regard to the HDR format war.

There are two HDR formats as everyone should be aware, the first is HDR10 which is an open format and is royalty free, the second is Dolby Vision HDR with a proprietary format and requires a royalty payment to use.

When Sony provides the HDR update to all PS4's it will be HDR10 not Dolby Vision HRD for very obvious reasons. Likewise for the XB1 slim since at the moment it will only support HDR10 again for obvious reasons although Microsoft has said that they are in negotiations for Dolby Vision HDR support as well.

For readers wondering what the obvious reasons are. I don't know what the consortium for Dolby Vision HDR charges but let's say it's $10 per seat (they also charge for movies as well). For Sony that would be over $400 million in fees while for Microsoft, the costs would be for each XB1 slim sold.

Note: I did some searching for Dolby Vision HDR license fees but so far I can't find an exact figure. So the $10 USD price is a guess although I do know that Dolby charges that for each sound system that has "Dolby Sound" support.

I have a 4k tv setup LG UH8500V which is capable of displaying both HDR formats, HDR 10 and Dolby, i have already watched a couple of 4k videos on Youtube and Netflix and i can already see a significant difference with regards to the richness of the colour depth and contrast brightness.

The best way i can describe it is that everything looks like it has had a brand new shiny fresh coat of glossy paint. What was before slightly dull now zings with enhanced detail, and parts of the screen which were black before now incredibly reveal details that were lost and unable to be properly shown on my 4k Daredevil series.

The jump of 4k chequer board along with HDR is going to make an absolutely astounding difference to our gamer experience. It's just a pity that Sony were unable to get this message across during their somewhat muted PS4 Pro reveal conference. Games that previously looked like Rosie O'Donnell will now look like Jessica Alba on the Pro.

Yeah, I've had it since the beta and its good, the new quick menu is really, really good, folders work great and the whole thing just looks better and feels faster than before. You can mass delete saves now too, shows the last time someone was online and a bunch of other little unannounced things.

I don't know how these clubs work but maybe it is possible to do this, i gave this idea before, you can even apply it to n4g it self. Make some kind of promotion system where those who deserve it get recognized by giving them a title and even their comments have different colour where you can easily find and discuss with. You also can make an option where they themselves can lock their comments and only allow the neutral to reply while the rest just can read. It's very cool idea if that's what you are aiming for this website. You need to grow such neutral and gown up community if you want to evolve and truly benefit the gaming news field and potentially forming really cool characters that truly help informing people properly(They are like leaders who people look up to and learn from) and may even form a new section for those neutral that will have better reviewing system since they only talk with knowledge and understanding of the games properly and than give their "opinion".

So in club subject, maybe you can make another private one and only invite those that you think are positive and productive and if possible only allow the rest to read.

Adding HDR support to everyone at no additional cost superb! On Xbox one, if you want HDR support, you have to buy a new Xbox One S.

HMDI 1.4 supports HDR. I guess this is the key.

-- officially this was introduced with HDMI 2.0a. But HDR10 is just a 10bit per gun encoding and widens the range on the signal. Good question how this will work with a 1080p signal. But since 1.4 is a subset of 2.0 it might well be that the PS4 is a "resolution limited" version of HDMI 2.0a now... means it supports 2.0 features up to 1080p? (Purely speculating here).

HDR is not supported on HDTV's (ie, 720p, 1080p and 1080i). You need a 4K or UHD TV with HDR support for you to see what HDR is capable of. It is a little more complex than that since there are two competing HDR formats.

The first is HDR10 which is an open format and does not require a license fee. HDR10 will be implemented on all PS4's and is available on the XB1 slim. The second is Dolby Vision HDR which is proprietary and requires a license fee to use.

Of course not. HDMI 2.0 compliance requires a higher bandwidth which the standard PS4 can't provide. But the protocol I flexible enough to support a subset of it. HDR is a color encoding and not bandwidth limited or constricted.

This will is not about the freaking GPU, it's about the HDMi controller.. The PS4 has a Upgradable HDMI controller chip..the Xbox one did not!

That's How Sony can infact do this and Microsoft has not..they could get Dolby , and pay a licence and get HDR on the Xbox one through HDMi 1.4 it will have a lower Hz, but they can do it..but as for Sony they had the hardware already inside the system. From the get go

Exactly..it went from 1.2 to a 1.3 HDMi port because the HDMi controller was freaking programmable!

i have day1 console and only 1 of ur problems is that it will spit out disc while playing ..it happens only with GTAV and Driveclub and even i changed HDD to 1 TB+8GB Hybrid SSHD SATAIII 64 MB 2.5" didnt fix da problem :P

If your machine is still under warranty then get it seen too, otherwise you may have to consider a new machine or repair. You could check with some gaming shops to see if they do repairs. Some (EB Games) are quite reasonable. If the problem you have rarely occurs then I would put up with it.

I think you can already do that by way of linking your PSN account to your Facebook account, then the photo you have on your FB account becomes your avatar on the PS4. As for wallpapers, can't you just display your own pics in the background?

This is not Something that you put on an OS and all games get it..your games has to be developed with it or patched for it.

And with the PS4 case since it uses HDR-10 like Microsoft has with its Xbox one S, the 4K TV must have HDR-10 support to see those effects in the game..but without them there is stability a increase with the games even if you cannot physically see the Color depth or contrast.

So Sadly we have to wait a shot while for the games all have to be patched to gather the new color depth that HDR brings as well as lighting as well as contrast..for HDR..Sony already listed the games off the bat that is getting HDR patch soon , someone already posted that..but it was a day or two ago.

My TV supports it, I have a Samsung SUHD (UE55JU8500). I read Uncharted 4 was going to support HDR, thats why I popped it in this morning.

Oh well, will wait for some updates then to take advantage of the HDR.

As me and nitus10 and others have been explaing over again and again.

There is things Sony has implementation on a hardware level inside Every PS4 from the get go.

Example:

PS4 will output movies and pictures in 4K Ultra HD, but not games.

The BD drive gets content upscaled..to ultra HD which is not native, but it's still 4k video support.

..the HDMi port is Compliant with HDR that means 2.0a compliancy..because it does not use Dolby HDR software solution through a HDMi 1.4 controller..the HDMi controller onboard the PS4 is 2.0a compliant..how do we know..well

4.00 lets you transfer ALL data to a new PS4. My copy of P.T. is SAVED!!!!!!

You have been able to do a back-up, and restore for a while now, actually. This process would have not prevented you from transferring P.T.

Only on the same system. Not a different one. Cause you can't re download P.T. Trust me, I've looked into it.

Not true. I bought a new PS4 earlier this year, and everything transferred from my old PS4 when I used this process. You don't need to download anything when you do a back-up/restore.

Using YouTube app on PS4 with new update , the UPLOAD list for specific channel was latest to older uploads now is not in right order . Hopefully Google is working on this.
