Is Bethesda Really to Blame for No Mod Support on PS4?

"One of the more disappointing pieces of news last week for PS4 owners was the announcement that Fallout 4 and Skyrim: Remastered weren’t going to get mod support on PS4."

I want Sony to have an statement about this and their take on Mod support. It is not that I care about Fallout 4, but future games I may like can be affected too

To me it seems that something just didn't work between the two in the end. If Sony was againts Mod support from the beginning, Bethesda wouldn't have bothered with it. The last time they reported having problems with mods on PS4 they said they were communicating with Sony to get it right.

TGGJustin2784d ago

Yep and seeing as how another game is getting mod support it shows that Sony isn't against mods like Bethesda made them out to be. Clearly more to it.

[Yep and seeing as how another game is getting mod support it shows that Sony isn't against mods like Bethesda made them out to be. Clearly more to it.]

100% Exactly..

Here take a read at this:

Bethesda today detailed three major issues that are holding mods back from the PS4 version of Fallout 4.

#1 issue

“PC textures are used,” Bethesda said, detailing the first issue. “Memory and performance issues may occur. We are working with Sony on optimal texture exporting support in a future update.”

#2
The second issue relates to sound. As Sony uses s proprietary sound format, Bethesda and Sony will need to work together on sound processing support.

# 3
Finally, the PS4’s mod storage limit is a paltry 900MB, so large mods are unsupported at this time. Bethesda asserted it’s working with Sony to try and solve the issue.

http://stevivor.com/2016/06...

So again , when Bethesda made these Mods ..do you think they were 1st designed with Sony's system in mind, or were these Mods designed 1st with Windows OS & Xbox one system design...we know the Answer people!
It's not too hard to put together one of the reasons.. Used PC textures instead of building textures for the PlayStation platform your wanting to Export from a Windows OS & DirectX format to a platform that is not based around a Windows System instead..can it be done yes..but again more work..

Same with Sound..again more work
Same with storage limits ..more work to work within that limit.

Than you have to work within limitations set by Sony , not by yourself...again it was not Sony's IP, it's Bethesda's.. Sony's platform is not Windows OS Based or uses Direct X API..etc.

ninsigma2783d ago

Interested to know what other games are getting mod support on ps4. I hadn't heard of anything other than fallout.

Aenea2783d ago

@joe

More work and they wanted Sony to do that for them...

I could imagine Sony going "sure, we are willing to do that if you can guarantee quality and stability for the mods".
To which Bethesda replied "no way, that's too much work!" and then released a press release stating Sony didn't let them make mods the way they wanted them to be....

What sony game is getting mod support? Please don't mention some game that lets you design your own levels. That's not mods.

Seems strange. Sony is no stranger to mod support since the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament featured mod support. What could be the issue here?

cash_longfellow2783d ago

Buggy mods on Bethesda's part clearly.

Number_92783d ago

What one game last generation and they are suddenly no strangers to mods?

joeorc2783d ago (Edited 2783d ago )

[Bethesda couldn’t do what they wanted and so they scrapped it altogether. There were probably ways to get them on PS4 but they might not have wanted to do extra work to make it possible for their PS4 fans.

All I know is that mod support for another game on PS4 clearly shows that Bethesda is to blame for this as well and that there was more to that story. ]

Exactly, it's not like Bethesda's developers did not developed mods for the PS4..they were there, and they even listed the problems..its just that instead of working further with Sony..they not only cut further development time , but just blamed Sony on dislike of Sony's restrictions instead of working to try to come to an agreement to get mods to run and be able to get them to run on the platform where both companies could be happy.

Sony did not promise or really had in any say about the companies decision to bring mods to the PS4..that was always Bethesda's choice..I'm sure that you would not have been working this long on them if Sony was not open for mods from the start..We are still working with Sony to get it done..

Another companies mods for a game they have also are bringing mods..Media Molecule : Dreams also has mods..yes it's a 1st party games, that still does not take away the fact there is infact mods were brought to that game for the PS4..

It's clear , Companies can infact bring mods to the PS4..Sony is open to it..they just do not Willy nilly refuse Mods with out a reason doing so.

ninsigma2783d ago

It was really unprofessional when they said it was Sonys fault. All their communications have been putting Sony to blame for it even before they said they were no longer doing it. Bad form.

I completely agree, take the case of Dreams, you can upload other 3D assets to work within dreams and use the tools to make it a unique asset in the game , share with others who than can alter it further or use it or add too it and say hey how about this. Want to work in collaboration on this project with me?

For Pete's sake there is even a Play , create & freaking share pool of design games that Sony support for such ..I mean that's the very core basis of the whole idea of Mods!

LBP was a play , create & share..over 2 million + user generated levels by people...modnation racers..

Microsoft had what spark..? and what did they do?

This whole Bethesda fiasco and how Sony is against somehow some way mods....i mean really ? Its being used or trying to be implied by the mefia and some ganers as its Sony's fault about not liking Mods or otherwise , is just pretty far fetched in my opinion..

Sony freaking supports Play create & share more than either Nintendo or Microsoft in the console space..the whole core concept of Mods.

Mods are
Play, create & share right? I mean that is the very whole basis of a mod..to make something better , to play it and share your creations.

That's the very definition of Mods whole premise.

Tomorrow children
Dreams
Little big planet
Modnation racers
MoveToys
Etc.

UltraNova2783d ago (Edited 2783d ago )

What did you expect from a Company tha openly favors MS? I mean look at their PS releases throughout the years being the bugfests, unoptimised crashing mess they were.

As for the the topic at hand, I want Sony come out and give their take on the matter before I blame anyone.

ninsigma2783d ago

@Joe
Yeah they obviously aren't against mods all together. It's just what Bethesda wanted went against their policies.

@ultra
Agreed, I'd like Sony to make a comment as well. In no way do I think Sony is completely innocent here. I think both are to blame but Bethesda just had a strop and made it out as if it was ALL sonys fault which is a d*ck move.

Dunban672783d ago

No it is on Sony- Bethesda was very clear, they made it happen w Xbox and Sony has not spoke to the issue at all-
Not sure how you can conclude otherwise unless that is simply what you want to believe

[Bethesda says it’s working together with Sony on ->future<- updates to solve the issues we describe below]

Future updates...it says you cannot even add sound right now because Sony's codec is their own...there..so what is a freaking Mod worth with out Sound support ?

But yet Bethesda's say..were working to fix the issue in the future?
I mean when how far in the future.. So Sony is to say..sure Bethesda OK your mod support as is when you cannot even add Sound support now? But you will add it later...? At what your convenience?

Again , another company is bringing mod Support for their game , the PS4 game : dreams ; already Vie beta had Mod support already..

So if I was a betting man by Bethesda's vey own history with its past releases on PlayStation platforms I would tend to put this issue squarely on Bethesda's shoulders...I mean it's their IP..Sony's not the owner of it..so how can they dictate to Bethesda to cancel Mod support when that decision is upto Bethesda's own choice?

Hedstrom2783d ago

Sony has a limit of 900mb, over that and it will need to go through QA. This is where Bethesda refused, and Sony wouldnt budge.

joeorc2783d ago

@Hedstrom16m ago
[Sony has a limit of 900mb, over that and it will need to go through QA. This is where Bethesda refused, and Sony wouldnt budge.]

Again excellent point, the big Question is does Sony need to change its position on their very own platform restrictions if there is a reason for such restrictions set up in the 1st place?

Any thing above the 900MB pretty much would be DLC at that point anyway!

And why , would you not want freaking Q&A on every mod that gets set to release..maybe they do not want freaking exploits, system bugs to infect the core game itself...when a Mod alters a game , unless that game was built or designed from the get go around modding than your going to always have trouble.

A well defined tool building system ..open build States like Dragon quest builder's, or Little big planet, spark, Minecraft..all may have open asset building inside a well structured environment, but atleast no real game breaking mods to cause serious faults by some people that may try to do or want to have a go at modding , who may want to do malicious intents or a person who may just want to try to make something better..that's the thing..there is multiple people that mod and not all could be of good intentions..at least with good Q&A you could or may cut down on the things that could cause problems that's why QA is very important in console's environment .

yup, worked for me a few hours ago

MrDead15h ago

This update on PC kills mods, they still didn't improve or fix the draw calls and if you have an RTX card the game still crashes unless you turn off debris.
So if you mod the game it now looks worse, plays worse, all of your saves are broken and the game breaking bugs are still present.

purple10112h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Good work detective

Bethesda strikes again, always thought their games were a tad boring anyway, this was even before Microsoft brought them. Used to quake 3 team arena to death, on an old pc, at the time it was new, fresh, fast paced and innovative, their games these days, are none-of-the-above

Profchaos2h ago

Yeah I've had friends rebuy the game because the ps plus didn't work and they used to own the last gen version sold off the physical after the PS plus pack included fallout when they got the ps5.

So overall I know ms has likely warned quote a bit from this error.

Steam’s Refund Policy Change Won’t Affect You Unless You’re A Lowlife

Steam is changing its refund policy, but you probably won’t be affected

Should have happened a long time ago. People wanting refunds after 50 hours in game.

fsfsxii9h ago

Pc gamers will take this as an excuse to pirate things

KyRo8h ago

I'm not sure why you're getting disgrees. Whilst not all PC gamers are petty, an awful lot of them are lol

Crows908h ago

Entirely untrue. Not any more petty than console gamers. The only large difference is console gamers don't have much of a choice.

qalpha9h ago

Daily reminder that 'TheGamer' is a corporate-generated, anti-gamer, anti-consumer, clickbait web site. They are mostly A.I. generated articles that villainize gamers. They provide nothing positive and actively try to provoke and divide the community through extreme view points and politics. Do not give them any clicks.

Inverno8h ago

Only scumbags? As if people don't play their games on console put in the most amount of hours and return it to GameStop and trade it in for another game. But also how many people are actually do this? And what games have been allowed to be refunded?

DustMan8h ago

You can refund any game you've purchased as long as it hasn't been longer than two weeks, and you've played less than 2 hours. I wish they would change it to 3 hours because some RPG's have so much exposition that you may only get an hour total of complete gameplay. That's my only knock on it. I've refunded plenty of stuff I was just curious to try. I typically stay away from Early Access titles which are the only ones affected by this policy change.

Inverno7h ago

Apparently early access doesn't count, only complete games with a play early preorder bonus.

Gaming4Life19818h ago

I definitely know if I want a refund in 2 hours.
