PS4 Pro and HDR: “this is the future. We’re removing the smudge from your glasses,” says Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog has been Sony’s go-to technical powerhouse for a while now – so just how have they found the transition to and working on PS4 Pro?

We pulled aside Naughty Dog’s Christian Gyrling to find out more.

There is nothing shitty about 30fps. Good gameplay+ story + stable fps should be the norm for all games.

The PS4's extra power comes in the form of its GPU, which is over twice as powerful. The Graphics processing unit is what is most responsible for resolution and graphical effects. Gameplay processes and performance is much more CPU heavy, and the CPU in the PS4 pro isn't over twice as powerful, it's just overclocked/boosted.

The PS4 Pro isn't a "twice as powerful PS4", it's GPU is 2.3x as powerful and the rest is pretty much the same. This is easier on developers and cheaper on consumers. That's why for 400 bucks this console will be able to play games at near 4K quality resolution.

Then buy a PC. Consoles are mainly 30 fps devices with a few exceptions. And moving over to 4K it will continue to be like that for the foresable future.

I believe on what my eyes see. My 4k with the one s looks fantastic.
However I was going to get the new pro for my room till the omission of the uhd drive. Also if all It's good for is upscaling and making the vr games look a bit better, than I'm just gonna wait till next year and see what Scorpio really has to offer.
My opinion is that the pro is what the ps4 and x1 should have been and It's missing a few key features that the x1s has.
If upscaling is all I get for 400 then I'm happy that I got my upscaling and uhd drive in my one s.

Obvious you haven't been paying attention. Getting a console to run 4K native hardware wise now! Ain't going to happen, it going to take a lot more muscle and money. So the fact that Sony gives you the next best option is a plus, which is why I dont get all the hate.

Seriously do people think that since the Xbox S has a 4K Blu Ray player in it that the Xbox S is taking full advantage of its capabilities!? How so when the Xbox S is still in so many ways inferior to the PS4 vanilla! What will happen for the games will likely happen for 4K Blu Ray disc.

Another question why hasn't Microsoft enabled the 4K Blu Ray player playback features? Because they'll likely slip in the features in a regular update when it's ready, but shouldn't this have worked out the box? It was after all a major selling point over the competition. What about HDR!? While 40+ million PS4's will have access to this feature from the start onward, how many Xbox 1's will share this feature with the Xbox S? A big "0"

Mind you these features ; 4K resolution and HDR are taxing on any hardware, what I find peculiar is that the Xbox S is able to achieve these features yet it slightly more powerful than the original Xbox 1, but still less powerful than the PS4 vanilla, and will be severely outmatched by the PS4 Pro able to accomplish what Microsoft is touting, unless there are some serious drawbacks!

Right now all we are seeing are PC vs PS4 Pro comparisons, where are all the PS4 Pro vs Xbox S comparisons? Especially since all I've heard since the revealing of the PS4 Pro that Xbox S and the Pro are contending against each other.

No I do not think a uhd drive and hdr are fully taking advantage. But for decades now Sony has placed the PlayStation as a media hun, and personally if I pay over $400 for something I expect it to do more than streaming services!
There are more people and gamers that use their devices' as media hubs than there are ones that don't.
I used to have a separate device for everything, but that gets old fast. The fewer things in my entertainment center (especially in my bedroom) the better!

I have a high end 4k HDR LG Television set and I'm just not seeing that big of a difference with HDR. In my opinion it's not much different than any other picture setting. In fact my TV actually has settings that look better than HDR depending on whats being viewed. I feel like HDR is mainly a gimmick thats being used to push the market to people who havent actually see it yet. I mean it does look cool depending on what your watching but the again the same goes for every other picture setting you choose. It's all preference and I dont even think everyone is gonna like the bright HDR look all the time. Alot of the TV's now come with a lot of different picture settings such as HDR, Cinema, Gaming, Sport, etc. When I was streaming Horizon on youtube in 4k with HDR on, I actually thought the Gaming setting looked much better than HDR IMO.

Are you sure you're doing it right? Are your settings optimized? Have you done proper calibration? I would suspect not, or perhaps, you're watching HDR in a sunlit room, which is going to impact the effectiveness. What is the peak brightness of your television? It matters. And yes, if your environment is not dark and you enable HDR it may be that other settings will look better, because HDR works by increasing the disparity in contrasting colors. But in a bright room that technique is marginalized. So the peak brightness and the black level of your particular television matters. Streaming isn't a particularly good way to judge your image quality.

I would suggest, if you haven't already, going to a site like AV forums and see if they have calibration suggestions for your particular television. They have pretty good discussion threads there. Many people never do this, and run with whatever the settings are out of the box, or only change a few things. Not sure if that applies to you, but it couldn't hurt.

The reason the picture looked better with HDR turned off is because you were watching a 4k youtube video that does not support HDR. I have a high end 4k HDR set as well and if you enable HDR without an HDR signal then it will not produce the result you are looking for ( Usually causes the colors to become warm and flat).
