PS4 is getting slimmer, going Pro and pushing towards higher quality gaming

So Sony’s live meeting has come and gone and I (Jay Shay, TGG), like plenty of other people, had the pleasure of watching it live. Even so, I think it´s safe to say that the PS4 Pro and slim console stole the show. So here´s my thoughts on the Playstation 2016 meeting event.

Simon_the_sorcerer3210d ago

Hmm, no 4K Blu-Ray movie support :S

TGG_overlord3210d ago (Edited 3210d ago )

That would be correct -_- And I have no idea why Sony made that shabby business decision (even the Xbox One S supports 4K Blu-Ray videos).

Aenea3210d ago

The Xbox One S does, not the Xbox One

amiga-man3210d ago

I'll take the more powerful console that supports 4k, A stand alone drive will be cheap as chips soon enough, so I'll take the extra performance thank you very much.

The Pro is quite simply the way to go

mark3214uk3210d ago

is the xbox s double the power of the ps4? does the xbox s use an amazing algorithm rendering trick to bring most up scaled 4k images on par with native 4k?

you enjoy your 4k movies while we use our console for what it is suppose to do..... play games with the added option to stream 4k

Sharky2313210d ago

From what I understand... Just like 3D blu-ray the 4K bluray player is a firmware patch away. I don't know when they will do it but they have to power to.

amiga-man3210d ago

That is a fair point Sharky, it might just be a software upgrade needed, either way Sony own's this gen.

GTgamer3210d ago

I haven't bought a blu ray disk in my life the only blu ray movie I own is spiderman 3 that came with my Ps3 so yeah I could care less about a 4k blu ray drive especially since i tend to watch a movie once but I'll still be able to stream my Netflix shows in 4k so I'm good

S2Killinit3210d ago (Edited 3210d ago )

Who cares i want a more powerful console not a movie player

I'll take 3X more power for $399.
If i want a 4k bluray player i'll buy it for $89.

DeadlyOreo3210d ago (Edited 3210d ago )

@mark321

Thank you. Why on this GAMING site are so many people so concerned about 4k movies? I swear back when the PS3 came out people were slating it for focusing on Bluray rather than gaming.

Jesus, the PS4 Pro is a very decent piece of hardware, and I genuinely think a lot of the hate for it is from salty jealous Xbox fans.

Since when did everyone buy £25 UHD discs?

King_Lothric3209d ago

The Xbox one S does not have a powerful GPU as the PS4 Pro and cannot compete against the quality of the PS4 Pro.

This is simple. Do you rather buy a gaming console with the power to support the best gaming or do you rather buy a gaming console just to watch 4k movies? (which there is just a few movies on 4K.)

I go with PS4 Pro since I buy a console for gaming. Not to watch movies.

And no mod support. #4theplayers

TGG_overlord3210d ago

And then there is that, yes...Sony needs to add mod and 4K Blu-Ray support asap!

Simon_the_sorcerer3210d ago

I wonder what went through Sony´s mind when they made that decision...

Aenea3210d ago

We really do not know what the exact reasoning is for this by Sony.

kraenk123210d ago (Edited 3210d ago )

We do..they want to push their streaming services and UHD BluRay support as well as demand is negligible at the moment..plus they went for a lower price first. It's possible there's going to be a later model with an upgraded drive but for the moment no one really needs it anyway.

400 for a three times more powerful, 4K gaming capable console vs 350 for a old and soon outdated console with 900p gaming and a 4K UHD BluRay drive.....you decide.

King_Lothric3209d ago

I rather have VR support than mods and the Xbox one has non!

And while everyone and every gaming site talks about how amazing the games look on the pro, the only thing Xboys have is, it haz no 4K drive for the 4K movies I do not own..... Chumps.

King_Lothric3209d ago

Complaining about a non gaming feature of a gaming console 😁

Right now, there is not enough 4K Blu-ray Tay content and the PS4 Pro still has a Blu ray player that can upscale movies to 4K.

Most people buy a gaming console for gaming purposes, not to watch movies.

There are rumours Sony's UHD drive wasn't ready yet so they went for the go cheap and early option.

[Arrogance]

Really..let's Go back to zero

Microsoft sold how many Xbox one's? Great system right..how is it for HDR? Oh that's right all estimated 22 million sold Xbox one's has no BD-UHD optical drive and no HDR..

While Sony on the other hand all PS4's will have HDR compliance HDMi output now..so yes current and PlayStation 4 Slim and PS4Pro has no BD-UHD playback that's is for movies only..but when it comes to HDR.. All 43+ million PS4's all will be HDR compliant..but yet Microsoft has only allowed Xbox one S user IE: those having to buy a whole new system even HDR support..

So both BD-UHD SUPPORT & HDR support is less than a million units of the Xbox one S..while when developers look to Add in HDR asset advantages to game software from now on..guess which system will get the priority?

43+ million vs less than a million units.

Want VR support with exclusive VR games for the Xbox one..oops sorry Xbox one S..no that's not it, sorry fellow and ladies you will need to once again purchase yet another Xbox system to get VR support.

While Sony ..all PS4's are getting VR support with 140+ games being released from this year until the end of 2017..

Arrogance indeed..

MetalGearsofWar3208d ago

@joeorc

Why are you even bringing MS into this article?

Aenea3210d ago (Edited 3210d ago )

Explain to me how Sony is going to profit from no mod support for Bethesda games?

What if Sony, for security reasons, didn't like the way Bethesda wanted to implement mod support. After all they probably ported what they did on Windows and Xbox and might not be as safe on a non-Windows machine. Sony suggests a better method but Bethesda decides that it's more work and refuses to do it. They keep talking but both sides aren't budging, then Bethesda releases a press statement that Sony didn't allow them to add mod support the way they wanted it to implement.

Not saying it's like this, just giving an alternative explanation, we just don't know and it's way too easy to come to wrong conclusions without all the facts.

You're just talking nonsense, So why wouldn't I be chilled?

kraenk123210d ago (Edited 3210d ago )

You should be a game journalist even. It just seems some of you guys don't really understand Sony's moves yet. Watch this Digital Foundry hands on Video, it might help you understand.

Seriously who cares for movies?! I have watched 2 BluRay movies in 6 years PS3 and PS4.

@kraenk1235m ago(Edited 33m ago)
[You should be a game journalist even. It just seems some of you guys don't really understand Sony's moves yet. Watch this Digital Foundry hands on Video, it might help you understand]

I mean it's pretty D@mn simple...HDR was the priority for Sony over BD-UHD playback..

43+ million PS4's already HDR compliant.. While Microsoft just made sure all estimated 22 million Xbox one's will not have HDR compliancy, and Xbox one S is their Solution..

When Developers want to Add in HDR graphical , lighting, and deeper color effect's for games..Sony was out right ready for it, while it's clear Microsoft's was not.

The smart play was thinking ahead when they made the PS4 to have HDMi HDR compliancy built in from the start even with the original PS4..thus if you buy a new 4K TV, yes your standard PS4 HDR effects in games will be able to be seen on the screen..even without buying the PS4Pro.

Gaming is the Priority

HDR, and VR adds to gaming , not just movie playback only just for the luxury of BD-UHD movie playback..

kraenk123210d ago

How?! The X1S doesn't even compete with PSPro anymore.

OB1Biker3210d ago

' the win game into the hands of MS'
So is it all movie, movie, movie now ?
I clearly heard House saying AGAIN : 'The living room is no longer the center of the PlayStation universe, the gamer is.'
I totally understand some people are into movies on disc but I honestly thought that was a dying media just like CDs

kraenk123209d ago (Edited 3209d ago )

Most of the people are fine with streaming movies. The ones who really care for quality can buy a UHD-BluRay player...that's the strategy.

Aenea3210d ago (Edited 3210d ago )

Still, it had to be said, there's enough FUD spreading as it is on both sides!

You know, I've been thinking about that Bluray stuff and came to a conclusion. Last gen Sony really wanted the PS3 to be more than a gaming device and made it a multimedia device. It worked for them. MS didn't do that as much, also miscalculated with DVD, then HD-DVD. MS learned from that and wanted their next gen, the Xbox One, to be similar to what Sony did with the PS3 and added features to the Xbox One to support media (the whole pass-through thing, DVR, etc.) and pushed all these things heavily. This gen, however, Sony decided to concentrate completely on the gaming side of things. They didn't feel it was a priority anymore and somehow does indeed seem to be working nicely for them. Add the declining sales of Blurays year over year and Sony extended this with the Slim and Pro and decided to not pay for the appropriate licenses to add UHD support to their consoles (hardware wise I don't think it would've cost them anything extra but those licenses would have). Since MS pushed the whole media device it also makes sense for MS to add UHD support to the X1S and future Scorpio.

They both simply did more of the same things they already started with this gen. And it's good they do different things!

Also (not entirely sure it's correct, so correct me if I'm wrong), Sony doesn't currently have a standalone UHD Bluray player on the market, so it seems Sony isn't really seeing a big future for the format.

----
And about your "Sony is playing the win game into the hands of MS" doesn't really sounds like an objective multiple console owner wrote that! Also find it odd that anyone thinks that a feature that is not related to gaming on a gaming console is going to win the console "war".

Think about it. People who already owned a 4k TV and like to buy Blurays might already have bought a dedicated UHD Bluray player because they are into that sorta thing or aren't afraid to buy a dedicated player in near future. People who own a 4k TV and don't buy Blurays, well, those aren't going to be swayed by the X1S having one. People who don't have 4k TVs yet, well, depends if they buy Blurays regularly or not and if they don't like to buy a dedicated player for it and they are already interested in Xbox games or not. Let's face it, if you wanted a PS4 (Pro or not) because you like the console and it's games then you're not going to be swayed by an Xbox One S because it has an UHD player!

I really do not seeing it doing much for MS. Well, some people might grab one since it's the cheapest UHD player currently, but are those people also interested in gaming is the question? And of course Xbox fans will want one no matter if they want to play UHD Blurays or not...

The price would be the most logic explanation behind the lack of native 4K Blu-Ray video support, yes, and I´m not against that. So I´m most likely going to buy the PS4 Pro version by the end of this year.

Red_Renegade3209d ago

i'm waiting on this to make sense. why does this uhd drive matter more than increased power for gaming? you'd give the xbox s the win for having a better movie feature, even though it's still not as capable a gaming console as the original PS4?

"just like Sony"

Gosh you're insufferable, not everything needs to be both-sides'd. Sony's had layoffs, but nothing like what Microsoft has been doing and is continuing to do.

CrimsonWing6921h ago(Edited 21h ago)

I mean, no offense, but this is why you’re not some corporate business person running a major corporation. Big profits don’t mean jobs are safe. Do you understand why things like this happen:

Cutting jobs to maintain or increase profitability, especially in underperforming divisions like parts of Xbox like other gaming divisions.

Corporate restructuring and relocating resources for strategic stability in ever changing markets and consumer behaviors.

Investor expectations and optimizing operations to maintain investor confidence. Whatever boosts stock prices and improves future margins.

And there’s many other factors at play. It’s never as simple as business doing well, everyone’s safe. That’s just you not understanding at all how corporations work and have been working since the beginning. This isn’t something that’s specific to Xbox, you can bet your ass Sony and Nintendo do this and if it’s not clear by now, game development is not a stable job nor has it ever been for many. A lot of developers are contractors and guess what happens when a project is done?

Ganif20h ago

Nintendo said they have no plans for layoffs, and you can't seriously claim that the scale of Sony's layoffs most of which involved Bungie which is self managed as even close to the same scale as what Microsoft has done since they purchased Zenimax. And that significantly less layoffs would have happened if those publishers had stayed independent. Keep in mind that much of these layoffs have been due to redundancies specifically related to these buyouts.

CrimsonWing6920h ago(Edited 20h ago)

@Ganif

Nintendo:

https://gamerant.com/ninten...

Sony:

https://gamerant.com/playst...

https://techxplore.com/news...

I don’t think it’s realistic to treat Sony’s layoffs as somehow outside the norm for the industry right now. Even if Bungie is self-managed, Sony’s cuts went far beyond that like Naughty Dog, Insomniac, London Studio being shut down completely, and multiple teams across the globe took hits. These weren’t just minor adjustments.

Nintendo, I had to look up and you’re right. They seem to be an outlier, but rest assured at some point it happens. And even then there’s been layoffs, albeit a smaller amount and contractors.

Would fewer layoffs have happened if studios from acquisitions stayed independent? Maybe. But even independents have been hit hard and look at what’s happened with Embracer’s fallout, or smaller devs like Digic, Roll7, or Volition. This isn’t just a “Microsoft problem” or strictly tied to acquisitions; it’s a broader correction happening across the whole industry, and unfortunately, layoffs are a big part of that process right now.

Ganif19h ago

From your article:

"According to reports, Nintendo of America restructured its testing operations, leading to layoffs of about 120 contractors, part of a strategy for global integration.

Nintendo of America, publisher of iconic franchises like Mario and Zelda, is shifting some contractors to full-time roles for better development integration."

Contractors are not employees, and even if you want to count them as that, it's 120 people vs around 7500 since Microsoft purchased Zenimax.

In an era of game industry layoffs, Nintendo is hiring more people

Nintendo CEO’s refusal to layoff staff goes viral following industry-wide cuts

And as for Sony you're comparing less than 1000 total jobs to an estimated7500

Has the industry faced layoffs, yes, but that still doesn't account for the mass layoffs due to redundancies that was easily predictable, or that fact that at least 1/3 of Microsoft's layoffs and studio closures happened before the industry downturn.
