ROTTR - Here is yet another 4K comparison screenshot between the PC and the PS4 Pro versions

Two days ago, we shared a 4K comparison screenshot between the PC and the PS4 Pro versions of Rise of the Tomb Raider. And since Square Enix has released another screenshot from the PS4 Pro version, it’s time for another comparison.

They should compare it with a $400 pc so people could decide what to buy.

Lonnie183208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

There are no $400 4k pc's! You'd have to include a monitor as well and only a high end pc can get the job done right...

Princess_Pilfer3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

You mean upscale an image to 4k? You can do that for far less than $400. Most 4k TVs will do that automatically. Some are even decent at it. We'd need a multiplat game to actually compare performance and we'd have to know the *actual* resolution it's rendering at before the upscaling.

Oh that's BS and you know it. For 1 you can hook a computer up to a TV just as easily as you can a console, and for 2 are we including the cost of the TV when talking about consoles now?

If you really want though, fine. this is your build http://pcpartpicker.com/lis...
you'll notice it doesn't include a CPU or mobo. You can grab an i5 2500k (which you will overclock the crap out of) for as little as 20 bucks on ebay and a compatible mobo for as little as 50
http://www.ebay.com/sch/ite...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New...

Ta da! You now have a 445 dollar 4k/30 capable PC. Yeah, it costs 50 more dollars. It's also way more powerful (the GPU by like 40% and the CPU by hilariously high % because the console CPUs are like half a good CPU from like 6 years ago.)

And lets not forget the elephant in the room. i can make full use of that PC for the listed price, add maybe 20 bucks for a mouse and keyboard if you don't have a friend who will just give you them. Know what it takes to make full use of a PS4? PS+. Guess what? $50 per year over the next 2-4 years is a price increase of 200 dollars, making the PS4 pro the *more* expensive option of you want to play online.

I did actually have to put in work to get that part list, I hope someone appreciates it.

(this is not me being down on the PS4 Pro, I'd buy one if I could and the screenshots do look good, but lets not kid ourselves. PC is higher quality at comparable price, you just have to put work into it. ) EDIT: which is why I was a primarily console gamer for so long. If PS+ hadn't started charging for online I probably still would be.

SouljAx3603208d ago

Don't forget to add the price of that 4k/HDR capable UHD TV to the price of that PS4 as well. And not one of the cheaper ones with the input lag either.

DragonDDark3208d ago

@Forum

TLOU Remastered will be native 4k with more games too though.

GTgamer3208d ago

@Forum Pirate
It does do native 4k so yeahhhhh just depends on the devs

dantesparda3208d ago

And there you have it folks, that going to be the difference between Pro and Scorpio (if it can even hit true 4k res itself without upscaling). The difference is no bigger than the difference in resolution now between the PS4 and X1 that MS fanboys have consistently told us is not a big deal or simply does not matter, but are now (in true fanboy fashion) telling us that it really does matter and that Pro is a POS for it and Scorpio is some kind of monster in comparison. In other words, typical delusional fanboy hyperbole. The reality is that the differences will be so small that only the most hyper picky anal motherf-ers are going to be able to see them. But you'll have to wait a whole extra year and probably pay more just to see the little teeny tiny differences the Scorpio will bring. In the meanwhile, you could play most of its exclusives on a PC at even better levels than a Scorpio now, seeing as 6TF is already available now for cheap and is just considered midrange on a PC.

So continue on being phony deluded fanboys and pretending these differences are big or even noticeable and worth anything. While the rest of the world enjoys the advancements now (well you know what i mean).

Peace my fannies

Oh, and p.s. to the mods, please ban that magicianprodude, all he's doing is bringing his useless fanboy hate her.

Princess_Pilfer3208d ago

Yes, I know. That's why I compared the PC that can run basically everything at native 4k directly to the PS4 Pro.

No, it will not "just depend on the devs." Clever rendering techniques and skyboxing will only get you so far, there will be quire a few games that simply cannot manage native 4k without running on the equivilant of low PC settings and many more that just can't keep a playable framerate because too much has to be rendered at a time, and in either case I'd rather have the more detailed, lower res game at similar or higher framerates.

dantesparda3208d ago

Also, about these comparison pics? You gotta know what the source is for each one, cuz if the Pro pic came from a Youtube video and is a jpeg versus a png or bmp pic taken directly from the PC version, then that is going to seriously skew the result. Always keep that in mind when looking at these comparisons.

uth113208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

That's the point, at $400 you don't get much PC because you've spent most of your budget on case/Windows/PSU/keyboard/mous e/Hard Drive/Ram, and you'll be force to buy budget GPU/CPU to keep it in the price range.

@Forum Pirate-

That $445 build doesn't include Windows, Keyboard, Mouse, or (for a true apples to apples comparison) Blu-ray drive & DS4/XB1 controller. I've also never seen a $25 case that wasn't crap.

UltimateMaster3208d ago

@Lonnie18
I do think tontontam0 was sarcastic. We all know it just doesn't exist.
The GPU for 4k 60fps breaks 1000$ for the GPU alone.

UltimateMaster3208d ago

It is weird that it looks better on the PS4 Pro?
Maybe it's because my monitor isn't 4k...
The PS4 Pro keeps his color gamut better than the PC gets brighter.

3208d ago
Princess_Pilfer3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

Use Linux
You don't need an optical drive, nothing runs of the disk anymore anyways.
Actually check the listings, it does in fact go down to 20 bucks. At time of writing it's 16.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Int...

I already addressed the mouse and keybaord.
You ignroe the price of PS+ meaning that even if you were dumb about it and spent 550 or 600 bucks, the PC would *still* be cheaper, maxing out out equal in cost.

FlameBaitGod3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

"There are no $400 4k pc's! You'd have to include a monitor as well "

Did the PS4 and Xbox 1 versions include Tv's or monitors ?

Lon3wolf3208d ago

You know of any PC's that upscale?

Bolts3208d ago

Lol upscaling on the PC is like playing games at 30 FPS. It's the ultimate insult. No PC gamer worth a damn will accept upscaling. On the PC it's either you do native at 60 FPS or you're trash.

Apex133208d ago

😂😂😂 good question

Maxor3208d ago

PC upscale is like kissing your mom on the lips then slipping her some tongue. It's an abomination. The PC is all about native resolution and 60 FPS.

Altovoltage3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

The graphics card alone will probably cost more than the PS4 Pro. People just love to complain PS4 Pro it's a great machine for the price.

TheOptimist3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

Someone educate this guy^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

MadLad3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

I'll say it time and again, we are far from the time where enthusiast performance cards cost upwards of $400. There are cards on the market, in the 200 - $250 range, that run laps around current gen consoles and, from what can be assumed based on the known specs thus far, will more than outpace the Scorpio.
Yes, that's only one part, but you get what you pay for. Do you want a standalone box for $400 that will get a large amount of titles and will play them fairly well? Or do you want to pay even $700, which has its own exclusives and also gets the vast majority of titles, yet plays them that much better? And, to be fair, that only speaks of the up front cost of the hardware. We all know that consoles have long term costs tied to them as well.

The choice is up to that person, but you get what you pay for.

Ysmir67233208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

And old 970 is 150-160$ and beats very easily this "new" Ps4.

Erik73573208d ago

This isn't about price per performance. It's about graphics and how "sony 4k" is not actually 4k gaming. That presentation was very misleading.

3208d ago
FlyingFoxy3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

@bruce755 Tflops don't always matter.. Look at the benchmark chart just a lil down the page here for Tomb Raider http://www.kitguru.net/gami... I heard from a few places (Digital Foundry also said in their vid) that unlocked 1080p on PS4 Pro goes between 40-60fps in this game. and as you can see even the 970 only drops to 56 on the minimums in that chart.

980Ti also destroys everything there.. So you are wrong.

joab7773208d ago

I love my PS4 but everything recently has only strengthened the argument to build a PC.

I just think Sony has possibly.made a mistake here. We will see though.

Sevir3206d ago

Its interesting you should say this, They built a PC with the same specs of the PS4 Pro at Eurogamer, and It ran Rise of the Tomb Raider at 4k and that machine came in at 18-24fps.... The Pro is Running this same game with some effects dialed back at 4k natively at a locked 30fps...

People these PC elitist love to talk about raw power, but according to steam, the Standard PS4 out powers 78% of the PC's people play their games on! Most play their games at something comparible to the XBO S. The NICHE Market of ultra 4K PC gamers dont even play at 4k they play at 1440p at 60fps. Thats interesting because, The PS4 Pro natively displays at 1800p and higher all the way up to true 4k, and these games all vary from 30fps-60fps, from remakes to launch games to resent releases using modern development philosophies.

So PC people on N4G and xbox fanatics taking shots... You're arguement is crap... Stick to your PC, Stick to your XBO S and enjoy it, PS4 players have an Option to go for more power this year in the PS4 Pro... And those that do will enjoy 4k and experiences tailored towards richer experiences, something the xb ommunity has to wait 14 months for...

Don't forget that you need a 4K TV to actually play PS4 PRO in 4K. And they are not $400.

Altovoltage3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

Just like you need a 4K PC monitor and they're not $400 either. Tell me where you can find a PC for $400 where it can perform like the PS4Pro can? And btw the PS4Pro does 1080p with max settings with better graphics than the PS4 so there goes the argument about 4K. Developers are not leaving behind the people without 4K tvs because as a gamer I welcome better graphics with open arms at a reasonable price.

TheOptimist3208d ago

@Altovoltage
A 400$ or max 450$ PC can do Hairworks, can the PS4 do it? I can play Witcher 3 with all high settings and at 1080p with Hairworks on 40-60 fps. I am pretty sure the PS4 can't do that

Master of Unlocking3207d ago (Edited 3207d ago )

This is what all these PC nerds forget to say when they talk about making your own PC rig in that posh manner that suits them so well. It's an interesting idea, mind you, but you still only play on a small monitor screen on PC, whereas you play on 55"-65" TVs with consoles. Most people just don't have enough room to place their PC rig and the desk that goes along with it, and the chair, next to their TV that's usually in their living room. Also, you play with wireless controllers on consoles, and you can have surround sound. On PC...

Ysmir67233208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

Most people dont buy pcs to play games.Remember, there are billions of pcs and maybe 300 million consoles. Also,i think people arent stupid enough to buy a 400$ new pc for games. They will get a)a 400$stock parts pc with a 150$ 970,an i5 and 8gb ram or B)600$ and more new pc.Also, with the average console game prices and yearly online fees+extra warranty, the console isnt 400$.this console has a cut down 480,paired with a really slow(for 2011)standards cpu, which dosent justify the price, along with maybe 5-10% of the features of a regular pc,even though 95% of the ps4 target audience wont really think ahead, wil they???

jonivtec3208d ago

i doubt ps4 pro will cost 400 bucks.

tontontam03208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

so many fanboys in this site.

I just want to see the difference between the ps4 pro and a similarly priced pc. I don't care which wins
whichever wins will have a bigger weight in my choice of platform when talking about graphics quality.
But it all comes down to games but the games I want to play are available on both platform, so "currently" only graphics quality and performance matters to me.

And oh i'm not interested in "specs" so I don't understand what "flops flops" you people are saying what i'm interested in is a proper comparison not technical specs. If you are saying that you are able to build $400 pc which is better than the ps4 pro then so be it I'll purchase that one. But I need proofs show it to me that's the only way you can sell it to a consumer like me.

tontontam03208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

@
I wasn't being sarcastic I have no interest in reading specs but I was being forced to, to justify my upcoming purchase If possible I would like to see the difference between $400 pc and ps4 pro on a 4k screen, native resolution or not whichever will look better on a 4k screen. I know a little more money would give a more powerful pc, but I have limited budget I'd rather spend the extra money on games.

3207d ago
GamingIVfun3207d ago

Did anyone look at the pictures? They look virtually Identical.

Master of Unlocking3207d ago

Yep. Still, like this, it's impressive as hell. I can hardly notice a difference.
Now in motion of course, I can tell the 60fps if it runs on a monster of a PC that can also simultaneously display this game in 4K, and the PS4 Pro version won't be 4K @ 60fps, but that PC would need a graphic card worth 1200$, in addition to the rest, to do that, while the PS4 Pro is only a 399$ console.
Impressive.

windblowsagain3208d ago

Sharpness is more telling, could be the Native 4k effect, or maybe AF.

But obviously People want to see PS4 vs PS4pro to judge whether or not they want to buy it.

dantesparda3208d ago

@windblows

AF does not effect the sharpness of those screenshots, AF affects the sharpness of the floor (or walls) as it recedes into the distance, the lower the AF the quicker the floor blurs before you, the higher the AF the further back it maintains its sharpness.

https://upload.wikimedia.or...

(I know, its not just on floors and walls and is really on textures at a oblique angle, but 99% of time, it by far most noticeable on floors, so that what i gave him that example).

The real reason the PC version looks a tad bit sharper is because its running at a higher res and therefore sharper as oppsed to Pro's lower res upscaled to 4K. Upscaling is always worst/inferior to native, no matter how good the upscaling is.

windblowsagain3208d ago

Yeah it is more noticeable on floors, but tbh I should have just said sharpness.

Saying that. The skeleton on the left looked blurrier, but I would say the PS4pro looks bad. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a very good looking title that actually takes a fair bit of power on PC.

Playing the game atm on PC again, excellent game.

gamer78043208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

people don't just buy a console vs pc because its cheaper. There are other reasons, its easier to use, less maintenance saves time not fiddling with settings to get the game to run right. I used to be only a pc gamer, but just at a time in my life where i don't have the time to mess with a pc. I want to just turn on and go. maybe later in life i'll have time for high end PC gaming.

That said lots of other reasons people like PC's over consoles, you can for a price always have the best looking graphics and fps. Play also with keyboard and mouse, mods etc.

Just depends on what experience you are looking for.

FPS_D3TH3208d ago (Edited 3208d ago )

Its lame that this needs to be said but I appreciate the comment. I'm the same way and just want to turn on my console and play. With two kids and a demanding full time job I don't get many chances to game and I want to be able to right away. I used to have a high end PC back when CS source LAN parties were the shit lol but I don't have time to tinker and keep my PC protected.

That said, I'm still looking for the better experience within reason. Don't think ps4Pro is gonna do it either. I plan to buy a 4K tv this Christmas and I think I'll wait out to grab a Scorpio next year. Or possibly sell/trade one of two ps4s I own and grab a ps4pro but it doesn't really seem worth it honestly.

gamer78043207d ago

sounds like we are in similar situations, i already have a launch ps4, so i plan to use that until a ps5 comes out. In the meantime i'll be just playing games and probably saving to get larger and 4k tv in the meantime while waiting on new consoles.

VsAssassin3208d ago

I am more excited to see UC4 and TLoU: Remastered with HDR turned on.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

gamerant.com
isarai892d ago (Edited 892d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness890d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch890d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730890d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior890d ago (Edited 890d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot892d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto890d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior892d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B890d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws890d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730890d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69890d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.
