Just to note, it won that by practically giving away Xbox One consoles with games. When you have the sales they were having, you're going to move some numbers.

I'm not sure PS4 will take the lead until November/December. I'm guessing Pro will sell well, but not sure Sony can claim September or October. Especially considering they're selling the Slim but also trying to promote the Pro ahead of November.

Well it's the cheapest 4K UHD player on the market at $299.00. Sony panicked when Microsoft announced the Xbox One S at $299.00, which is the reason why the PS4 Pro only comes with a 1TB hard drive and a standard Blu-ray drive. Sony spent so much on the GPU, CPU and everything else that goes along with a new console, that they had to down-spec some components on the Pro to compete with Xbox One S.

The ps4 pro was just announced yesteday. best seller charts are not an accurate depiction of overall sales - especially the next day. amazon.com etc are only a small percentage of total distribution chains. i'd like to know how you know about the ps4 pro demand since nobody else does. so far the media seems to be disappointed overall in the ps4 pro right now with all the talk of upscaling, no 4k bluray and it already being less powerful than scorpio that also has 4k bluray.... and so does the one S. the ps4 slim doesn't. MS is stepping up, and Sony's going to have to start trying a little harder than they have been. they've been coasting on brand thru most of this generation. The reason Xbox won for the month of July was because of heavy discounts (Gift cards, free controllers, free games) to get rid of old Xbox One's to make way for Xbox One S and the win was just by 10,000 units in one of the slowest months for console sale of the year and that was only in the US, world wide PS4 still won July, also the PS4 had the highest revenue in the US for the month of July by a larger percent than the console sales numbers. Which lends to the fact that Microsoft were practically giving older Xbox Ones away and were not making any money on them. Also in August and this month the stock of PS4 was kinda low because of the coming release of the the new PS4 and Sony not restocking until the release of the new console. I would bet even august was a small win, Almost every month that PS4 sells more consoles it's by 25,000 to 30,000. Winning summer months sales numbers by small margins isn't much to brag about, and if your going to brag about sales, give totals sales, Like Sony have been doing.

You can bet your Ash that come November PS4 will win and probably win every month after till Xbox Scorpio arrives, and it's not a given that the Xbox Scorpio will win then..

I wouldn't call it a surprise either. You need to look at the variables. It's revised hardware, it's cheaper, and it's capable of Ultra HD. If the software was the thing that moved units, Xbox One would win more often since there haven't been any big releases these past two months to my recollection. I think you had a lot of people holding out for a slim, people who couldn't afford it before but can now, and people who want an Ultra HD player. In this regard, it's a definite win for Microsoft. They went with features and affordability--we're seeing a just payoff now if you ask me.

As for "most people have been waiting" for Sony's new hardware...would you really say most? I think they'll see a spike in hardware sales, but neither Slim nor pro have a UHD drive. Sony's basically saying, "if you want UHD, you have to buy it through the network at our prices". That's not going to sit well with people who want to build a physical collection. The Xbox One S allows them to do that.

Now about this being the last month MS wins in North America until Scorpio launches...I don't think so. At the very least, there's no way Gears of War won't push them ahead that month. I simply don't see it. Microsoft also has some very aggressive sales. That's worth taking a look at. Xbox One S will also be part of Black Friday incentives whereas Pro cannot because it launches in November.

Credit where it is due. It's for the best that Microsoft starts to hassle Sony. You may not agree, but this will ultimately force Sony's hand to be more competitive. They've become comfortable and that bothers me.

Personally, I think you should be grateful that Sony isn't winning every month. See how much the Xbox One has improved since launch? And how much the PS3 needed to improve? That's competition, and it is beautiful. When you're the underdog with something to prove, you do what needs to be done.

HDR was never useless, Sony pushed for it for at least 2 years, since early 2015.
It just now this year became a standard. Having a HDR compatible or Premium HDR.
Sony TVs are very much capable of Premium HDR but chose not to brand them because they don't just meet those requirements, they exceed them.

Hours played is a nice stat, but the install base is one of the deciding factors of wether a game gets ported to or developed for a particular platform.

Uhd player is so uninteresting. 4k content will be mostly streamed. Why would i buy a 50€ Disc if i can already Stream Netflix content in 4k???? I understand why they won Aug, but still baffled as to why they won July. July is usually a very slow month. Like you said, people would have been waiting for XB1 S in Aug. So that made it even more puzzling that they won July. Can they win Sept now? With the launch of PS4 Slim in Sept and then PS4 Pro in Nov, it will be a real challenge for them to win those months. It will come down to games like FH3 & Recore, plus Gears 4 coming out in October will help. Great job Microsoft. Keep it going.

The lack of 4k drive in ps4 will hurt sales and help ms. Searching social media and other comments seems to indicate many people are put off by its omission. Plus the 4k upscaled component means the message on what you are actually getting for the upgrade isn't clear.
I see many people have said streaming 4k is the future, but for many it is still not possible. It will be another 4 years in Australia until they upgrade the majority of homes with Internet fast enough. My top download sits at 12-14 mbs, not enough for netflix 4k. Hence why the 4k blu ray drive is important

The same reason Xbox won the last 2 months. PS4 just dropped their price $50. Just look at Amazon's top 100. PS4 have 3 units including the Slim in the top 50 (COD #25, Uncharted 4 #42 and Uncharted 4 Slim #41 bundles). Whereas only 1 Xbox unit in the top 50 and it's already losing to the Blackops 3 PS4 bundle and the PS4 Slim is climbing up just behind that Xbox S unit.

for the same reason i sold my ps4 as of november for 200.
it isn't always just based on what the product has but what the customer can afford and will use.
i don't have a 4k tv, so i find the addition of the 4kblueray player in the one s a useless option for me. yes i will upgrade to a 4k tv eventually, when that happens, the ps4pro will be there for me with 4k content via vue and the playstation store alone with netflix and youtube.

we all have our own requirements to make a purchase viable to us.

After the $299 price cut the PS4 has passed XB1 S again on Amazon and the PS4 Pro at #1. Without some kind of crazy deal this is likely the last month this year Xbox gets a NPD win.

Amazon best sellers that include pre-orders are completely useless to use in any argument. Amazon doesn't make you pay anything to pre-order. I could go right now and pre-order 100 copies of something and not pay a single cent until it actually ships. A lot of people, including myself, pre-order on Amazon for that exact reason. Mostly because if you're not sure if you want it or not, you can at least have the product secure without worrying about it selling out, and at no upfront cost to you.

The XB1 S is actually up there because people are buying it and paying for it. The same can't be said about the PS4 Pro because it cost nothing to pre-order. I even pre-ordered one just because I may want one closer to launch (I doubt it though). Should my mind change I can cancel without worry, or if I do decide I want it, I don't have to worry about it selling out or waiting for the next shipment. If you want to compare sales data using Amazon, use items that are actually out and must be paid for at time of sale. Not pre-orders.

The slim releases in a week, it's not likely that many of those pre-orders will be cancelled. It's been available for pre-order for less than 5 hours and is already in the top 100 and has jumped up 20 spots in last hour currently at #42.

Either way by tomorrow there will be 3 PS4 SKUs tracking ahead of all the XB1 SKUS.

I'm not saying that Xbox is going to continue outselling the PS4. I honestly don't think it is. Nor do I really care. I play on my PC, PS4, Wii U and 3DS and I'm happy with my choices. Microsoft has had sporadic NPD wins since XB1 launched in 2013.

At what point in those widely scattered months did their public image improve? I think it's quite simple. At E3, Xbox announced something new, and it was sold at a good deal, so it sold better than the competition that DIDN'T have something new. Didn't XB1 sell more than PS4 in its launch month? Microsoft tends to know how to propel new hardware... for a short while.

Fortunately "everyone" is not a metric you can maturely measure or provide proof of. However, more people around the world have better taste and common sense to prefer the PS4, that has more game-related features, and a larger lineup of better rated, more diverse and impactful exclusive games. We don't have to wait 9+ months into the year for quality AAA games like the poor Xbox audience is forced to.

What part of PS4 looks like a toaster? Xbox One S looks like a radio with all those holes in it. Does that change how it functions or plays games? What other downgrades does PS4 slim have? They took out optical port and added in better Wi-fi connectivity. What else?

I think the UHD Blu Ray player is a bigger deal than most people care to realize. Add in great Fall lineup, games with gold co ti uing to pump out good games, and very good bundles and prices and you have a winning formula. HDR and 4k upscaling are just the cherries on top.

I won't agree or disagree however we are talking about gaming machines and there is a huge difference between videophiles and gamers.

Most movies are in the order of 70 minutes to 180 minutes long and yes there are some that are longer and shorter. Movies are also for the most part passive entertainment in that all the audience has no real control orther than to stop watching. Of course there are people (ie. videophiles) who collect movies but for most people it's usually watch once and maybe, just maybe watch again in the future.

Games on the other hand are what can be called active entertainment in that the player/gamer for better or worse actually contolls what they watch. In addition games are usually in the order of three (short games) to hundreds of hours (ie. MMORPG's). There are also multiplayer games that can be extreemly short (a few minutes) but still offering many hours of entertainment. Like videophiles there are gamers who also like to keep a library of games and this is fine as well.

For most gamers a 4K Bluray player is a nice value added feature but it is not overly significant if the gamer has no real interest in watching movies especially when they can pay a few dollars a month (eg. Netflix) for access to 100's of movie titles including 4K movies and stream (assuming a good internet connection and no bandwidth cap) them at their convenience. Why pay $20 to $30 for a 4K movie when you can get the Bluray for half to a quarter of that price or just subscribe to a service that is so much cheaper again.

Even today there are many millions of people still watching movies on DVD so while videophiles will still prefer to have a library of better quality movie media most people don't care.

I have a PS4, PS3, PS2, Vita, and PSP. Never owned an Xbox, nothing against Xbox, it's just that PS exclusives just appeal to my tastes more I guess. I've got the Persona 5 Take Your Heart Collector's Edition on pre-order too. It's just that all the mistakes Sony have made with the Pro is enough to disrupt their lead and pave a way for Microsoft to make a comeback and overtake the PS4. Not that I care. I'm just gonna sit here enjoying all the PS4 exclusives while Microsoft regain the lead. It'll be like the last gen where Xbox 360 leaded in front of PS3, but personally I didn't care because I was too busy enjoying all the great PS3 exclusives whilst 360s were flying off shelves faster than PS3s were. Honestly most of the sales are clearing out old stock. All the EB's have been told that we need to be aggressive in getting rid of stock. Even being told it's more important to sell our old stock than our used systems even. The S sales have been very good in our stores though most of our sales are clearing out our excessive stock of old Xbox One units though.

Combine the huge price cuts, free games and high trade values being given to clear stock its not surprising.

If you guys are thinking it's a trend, it's honestly going to have to win out the rest of the year. 2-3 months out of the last year or 2 are just outliers on a graph.

The only part that bugged me was when they said you won't be able to tell the difference from what the pro is pushing out vs 4k that is such a lie. Even with all the tricks to the eye I'm pretty sure you can tell the difference because if that was the case then there wouldn't be a need to come out with a 4k console in the future then. Either it's all still impressive I don't think I'll get a pro when it drops though mabye later on if all or majority of the new titles come out for it and really take advantage of the extra grunt. Though I'm a graphics whore I have a 4k tv and indo see the difference from a 1080 panel.
