This game is shaping up to look like it's going to be an easy shoe-in for Game of the Year 2017.

Just like God of War and the last of us before it, another new intellectual property by Sony is shaping up to be something very special. It's time Sony start focusing on a western RPG they could call their own. Great time to be an RPG fan.

DigitalRaptor2813d ago

Said the same thing the other day.

At this stage a GOTY 2017 nominee is a given. It's a completely opposite direction for Guerrilla who people have been complaining about with Killzone for years. They've tried something brand new, risky and creative and they knock it out of the (jurassic) park. This is their first open-world game too.

Agreed but we have to still give compliments to their publisher for even allowing them to as they're not an independent team and have very little say in what they create. I think it's likely that Sony accepted them creating this game because they needed the genre or saw an opening for a new intellectual property as I believe if they wanted another Killzone they would have very much made them continue creating that series.

A passionate team like Guerilla Games has likely had such an idea brewing for a long time.

The one thing that does worry me is that it's their first open world title so I'm definitely a bit worried as that's not really a very easy genre to do and I'm sure we're going to find lots of mistakes considering. Similar to The Witcher 3 in Xenoblade having a few issues.

I'm still excited about the game but I'm not expecting it to beat other open world titles that are sort of veterans in that genre I would be extremely surprised if it utilized the open-world in a greater way than other open world titles as other teams have had longer histories with the genre than them so I'm completely fine if certain features or don't work as well.

True, it's not all on the developer I suppose. At some point you have to be the one to make a choice to liberate a team that wants to grow though, and I think both Guerrilla and Sony knew that Killzone would never allow them to grow as a team. So they've taken in SCE Cambridge as an internal second studio, handed the Killzone IP over to them to put their spin on it, whilst giving them opportunity to grow sooner by working on PSVR's RIGS.

What I like this generation, is how Sony has promoted developers above themselves and treated them well. Even on the PS4 game box arts for their exclusives, you don't see the Sony Computer Entertainment logo on the front anymore, it's just the DEVELOPER name on the box, which I think is a cool touch.

In regards to the open-world nature of the game, well they hired some CD Projekt Red devs years back because they obviously needed pointers and more experience in open-world design. The lead writer on this was the same guy who wrote the amazing Fallout: New Vegas, John Gonzalez. It's not going to be a perfect open-world game, of course not. It should be interesting to see their approach to it though.

Got to love Sony not just a steady stream of quality sequels but a steady stream of new and innovative IPS as well.

DigitalRaptor2813d ago (Edited 2813d ago )

Sony strikes the best balance, when it comes to this.

Wallstreet372813d ago

I agree. Never a dull or boring moment with the diversity of games offered. Best balance indeed.

Agreed this is something I personally wish all first-party Publishers did as I believe we need a series of new intellectual properties every generation.

It was remade last year for PC , Now released and OPTIMIZED and PORTED for/to Xbox and PS5, not “remade” just for consoles.

“it follows a critically acclaimed release on PC back in 2023” that’s because it’s the same work/game. it’s not following/follow up or a continuation. Author Sounds like they are taking a stab at an article and don’t know the product-line lineage and release history/ hierarchy they are attempting to inform you about.

More appropriately: System Shock was first rereleased in 2023 on PC, System shock is now available on PS5 and Xbox.
