PS4's 2-Step Verification Reportedly Coming Tonight

According to a Sony support worker, Australia and New Zealand will finally be getting 2-step verification on PS4 later tonight or tomorrow morning, with the plan to roll it out to other regions next week. 2-step verification has been spoken about for a long while by PlayStation.

It's a step in the right direction and it never should've taken this long to get it

I use quite a few major services, banking or otherwise, and can't think of any that use a 2 step verification. Some have it as optional, but most just require a U/N and password. I know quite a few I use have SMS verification for when you forget a password or something like that though.

Wow, SMS only? Kind of a waste for people who don't have mobile devices. Sending an email with a code or having an authenticatior app on older ios and android devices like some gaming companies does would have also been better.

Also, better an option where you can check: Never ask again on this device, I'd hate to enter a code everytime I turn my PS4 on.

Once can get a free SMS number if they really need it. You won't need a code every time you turn on your PSN, likely just for making purchases, kind of like how it is now when it asks for your password when making a purchase if you choose that extra bit of security for store use.

@Infected, aside from the times when PSN actually being comprised by hackers. Ive never had friends or met someone whos account has been hacked. So for you to have 6 in a weeks time is a bit suspect.

I guess this is better late than never. Xbox has had for a while, Facebook and several other sites have something similar .

I had my PSN account for 6 years and have never been hacked. I had friends who had it around the same amount of time and never lost their account. But I did know a few people who would willing give up their account to "gameshare" and not expect something to happen.

I don't know why people are that dumb to willingly give up their account info to give a random stranger a free game.

More often than not, any account compromise is actually the users fault. If one doesn't protect their info, it's going to be stolen and used. 2 step authentication isn't even going to solve it completely, because it's easy enough to bypass if one knows how. This 2 step thing is to actually protect it's users who don't care enough to keep their information secure.

Worked almost a decade in IT security, and I can say that it is unfathomable to me just how free people are with their information, or how uncaring they are about keeping their information secure. Even after they have breaches to their accounts, they bitch about how someone else is at fault, update their password, and don't do anything else to try and secure their information more appropriately.

And is that a good idea? I have a PSN account since the launch of PS3 slim . It is american because there was no PSN in my country on the same date . Now I have to be banned from buying on my main account for this? I hope Sony do not shoot on its own foot (or mine) that way.

No it's not, i have 2 accounts as well..
but due to the lack in security in the past, this is the flipside of improved security...
I got a feeling Sony is keen on enforcing and eliminate (what they might consider) bogus accounts and therefore will use a sms system to filter out people like us..

I don't see how people can be downplaying 2 step security. Oh, you've never been hacked? That really only means that you've never been targeted. For optimal security, 2 step security is a must.

That's annoying and pointless. "It is much needed as PSN accounts are a well-known target for hackers." what horrific garbage. Any game account is a target for hackers and it's usually steam.

It's ridiculous how long it's taken for them to adopt 2-step verification but I'm glad it is finally happening.
