EA is misunderstanding why these mid generation refreshes are happening. It isn't because Sony or Microsoft want to upgrade the power of the systems, it's because AMD is discontinuing the lines that make the processors for both of these consoles and the only way for Microsoft or Sony to keep those lines open and continue making the current processors, is to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a month, which would negate the ability to lower the price of the systems. So, in order for them to move up into the new fabrication, it also requires the boost in system power due to it being the minimum spec of the newer line of processors.

Microsoft making the Scorpio is just them trying to get ahead of Sony, to try to gain some ground back financially. Though, Microsoft has stated that developers cannot make games that specifically take advantage of the Scorpios hardware… Which makes absolutely no sense at all. Why make the system if you are only going to allow marginal upgrades to the games you can play on it?

I think Sony is going to give Microsoft Scorpio and then make a brand-new generational leap system, that developers can take full advantage of without limiting any aspect, in 2018.

Just my two cents, take it for what it is… Which is pure speculation.

Bzone243255d ago

Microsoft never said that developers can't make games that specifically take advantage of the Scorpio's hardware. Just can't make an exclusive game for Scorpio. Can make a game that takes advantage of Scorpio hardware and it downgrades for the regular Xbox One. MS wants devs to make 4k games, isn't that taking advantage of Scorpio's hardware?

Kingthrash3603255d ago

Yeah but I think devs will go for 1080 60 rather than 4k 30. Also didn't phil say 3rd party studios cam make exclusives if they wanted to? Maybe he took it back and cleared it up..
No matter how you swing it though, Sony has already stated a few times that they are staying traditional. ..while MS has stated ending generational consoles....so as of now only time will tell. Both companies have lied before.

bouzebbal3254d ago

the infinite extension to lifecycle is stupid and that would mean the end of AAA games taking usually 2+years to come out.

decrypt3254d ago

In translation console gamers now need to upgrade their consoles every 2 years.

Wasnt this the reason people preferred to game on consoles, so that they didnt have to upgrade for 5 odd years. Well looks like PC gaming one ups Console gaming again.

While you may need to buy a whole new 400usd console every 2 years. You could probably get a 200usd GPU on the PC every 2 years and still be ahead of the consoles as you dont need to change the entire PC lol.

RIP console gaming.

Pongwater3254d ago (Edited 3254d ago )

@decrypt - Capitalism, not PC gaming, has one upped console gaming. But yeah, if this new business strategy succeeds it will make more sense to build a PC than to buy a console, especially in the XB's case.

@Bzone - Devs won't spend much time making 4K games until 4K TVs become much more common than they are now. I've read articles talking about 4K not being a standard for very long because of higher resolutions on the very near horizon.

This is in no way an "almost infinite extension of the console cycle", EA.

Goldby3254d ago

@Kingthrash360

It was Shannon Loftis that stated its up to the devs, i'm not sure it was retracted after the fact or not

ULTp0ltergeist3254d ago

I'd say it's simple, new software today is allowing these iterations to happen. Without Microsoft's UWP I doubt they'll be putting effort behind another console. Since we're speculating I think Sony in terms of these new iterations is behind Microsoft and it's Microsoft who has been dictating their decisions. Probably the original Xbox One being gimped was done on purpose.

Sciurus_vulgaris3254d ago

AMD doesn't manufacture console chips, they only design them. The Scorpio and Neo are likely due to both Sony and MS, overestimating the demand for 4k and VR.

Saigon3254d ago

You mean underestimating? If they overestimated them, we wouldn't be talking about the Neo and Scorpio. I honestly believe cost had something to do with why the current PS4 and XBO are designed the current chip sets. I assume that they wanted to support 4K out of the door for games, but weren't able to because of the cost. Now the Neo and Scorpio are able to right their wrong.

Kokyu3254d ago

Your comment makes no sense. You're talking like these consoles are getting better chips sets and they arent the refresh Neo and S are only getting small overclocks not new processors, gpus or ram plus Ive not read anywhere thats says AMD is closing any lines or production.

DJStotty3254d ago

think your mistaken, developers can make exclusive software specifically designed for the scorpio if they wish.

Microsoft confirmed this when they announced the console

yomfweeee3254d ago

Surely is just speculation. You think you, a random gamer, know more than EA who probably deals with these companies on a daily basis.

OB1Biker3254d ago (Edited 3254d ago )

'Scorpio is just them trying to get ahead of Sony'
Or isnt Sony trying to get ahead of Ms long predictable XB1 upgrade by releasing Neo this year? And Ms realizing it a bit late trying to leap frog with all but a new gen hardware? Who knows how that happened?

I really don't like the idea of an "infintie hardware upgrade cycle". I don't want to be updating my consoles every 2 years. Devs also need time to develop AAA games, to iterate and to take advantage of the hardware. If consoles are being "refreshed" every 2-3 years then we'll end up with single game franchises. For example, take Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Days Gone, or even No Man's Sky. I'm hoping for sequels to these game within this console lifecycle, but if devs are having to work towards new specs every 3 years, it's harder to make the most of the hardward and iterate on a franchise. I also think it's just a little bit ridiculous from a consumer perspective to have PS4 Neo come out this year, and then in 3 years there's the PS4 Neo 2 that'll then be coming out etc etc.

Kokyu3254d ago

But how can they milk is if consoles dont follow a cell phone life cycle?.......sarcasm over.

DJStotty3254d ago

Thats why games getting developed are forward/backward compatible. Scale up/down depending on your console of choice. Just like how a pc changes settings depending on the hardware your using.

freshslicepizza3254d ago

nobody is forcing you to upgrade though. so until we see exclsuives on the new machines it is business as usual for all original owners.

what i question is ea and their stance on the pc, why are so many sports games like madden and nhl now ignored on the pc?

freshslicepizza3254d ago

nobody is forcing you to upgrade though. so until we see exclsuives on the new machines it is business as usual for original owners.

i just want ea to put their money where their mouths are, put games like madden and nhl on the pc.

DeadlyFire3254d ago

idk Technically its 4 years Just one year shorter than the average 5 year cycles. They will never blindly launch a console. There has to be a big press reveal so that gamers will know its date. At least 6 months to a year out. Launching in 2016 is off the table now. I personally think Sony could have not revealed anything to think about re-tinkering with the hardware for something closer to 6 Tflops. Sony likes to match or surpass competitors. :P PS4/XB1 launched in 2013 right? PS Neo/XB Scorp won't launch until 2017 at the earliest possible date. Neither Scorpio or Neo have any real hardware changes to the CPU, RAM. Just minor tweaks. Plus a heavier GPU. A new generation will come with a better CPU at some point soon. Pretty sure by 2020 we will know for certain. I don't expect AMD Jaguar to be used in the next generation machines after this one. Maybe a newer small core, but Jaguar will be buried after 2020 or so.

freshslicepizza3254d ago

personally i think we will get more and more revisions, maybe more so on the xbox than playstation. and eventually gamers will be forced to move on. perhaps we will see every 3 years a new upgrade but older systems will still get to play those games but maybe after 6 years the old system won't get the newest games. which means it will be kind of like the way its always been but in a more gradual style.

i think of it like an iphone. they keep upgrading every year but you don't have to until after 2 or 3 new models come out that you finally get left behind.

rainslacker3253d ago

I'm not a fan of constant upgrades either.

What I'm going to become even less a fan of is the more frequent "wait until -insert new console here- comes out" arguments that will become a constant presence in the forums and news, as well as the news being way too focused on new hardware as opposed to games like we've been seeing since before E3...and even after where X1S and Scorpio took away most of the spotlight.

I feel if it's a 2-3 year upgrade cycle, the consumer is going to grow tired of hearing about it, and depending on how things get implemented, may actually be turned away from console gaming if it becomes too much of a hassle to keep up.

freshslicepizza3253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

microsoft will likely be the one's leading in this direction more than the other two now that they have aligned themselves with pc gaming. sony might when other factors come into play such as the timing of ps4 neo and ultrabluray/4k starting to become marketable and psvr with the additional power to make it even better. nintendo? they will just keep plugging away creating hardware to showcase their ip's without a care about what others think as long as their games can still sell millions and be profitable.

as for being a hassle, it will be less of a hassle than pc upgrades and to be honest even that isn't too cumbersome. don't worry, one day we will all be a subscribor and the hardware itself will become less and less relevant once things like playstation now grow and become more reliable.

rainslacker3253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

Dunno. If it becomes a viable market, I can see both MS and Sony going this route more often. Nintendo I can agree with, but even they aren't immune from the premise as we saw with the N3DS, and some prior game boy updates...which were more new systems...although they didn't typically come out in 2-3 years of one another.

By hassle, I mean more the cost of entry in trying to keep up with the newest things. Something I don't mind doing when it's spaced out, as it's an accepted norm, but reducing the cycle makes it more a chore than exciting.

The bigger hassle is going to be the constant media and forum focus surrounding it all every time some new hardware gets announced or released...kind of like it is now, and how it was when the rumors started. It gets old when you have to go through it more often and you aren't really ready for such things like a typical generational change.

As of right now, my only concern as a consumer would be if there are changes to the hardware which will make it annoying to keep track of what games can play where. Eventually this would have to happen to keep moving forward on game design, but that's more a concern for the less informed consumer who doesn't buy in right away...for me, I probably wouldn't have a hard time keeping track, but would be annoyed if I don't decide to get every one available as it comes out.

As of right now, I'm skipping the X1S. My OGX1 doesn't see enough play time to make me feel I need one, and the UHD player is the only feature that appeals to me. Since I'm not willing to spend more than $200 on a player, I don't see any reason to get an X1S for the feature, although the $300 model coming out may OK with a decent trade in program or just selling off my old X1 to subsidize the cost. No rush for me though, so I'll just play it by ear.

freshslicepizza3253d ago

i dont think upgrading from an xbox one to an s is really worth it unless like you said you can get a decent trade in or sell it for a good price. to me this new system is for new owners who were on the fence. the only time i ever upgraded is with my ps3. i managed to trade it in because it was getting loud after you play for awhile so they didn't know that, lol. it did play ps2 games but i didn't feel it waa worth keeping in fear of it eventually crapping out on me so i got the latest ps3 and it was much quieter and still have it.

as for feeling like you might have to upgrade to keep up so far they have said you don't so i guess we have to take their word for it. scorpio looks to cater to those who want 4k gaming and neo is likely going to appeal to those who want a bump in power but it might be the different in psvr that may shed a light on a more troublesome factor and that is the current ps4 just isn't powerful enough. consumers might end up being disappomited if ps4 neo improves it by quite a bit but again sony is saying all the right things by clarifying ps4 owners will get all psvr games and no neo exclusives.

wait what?

"At a macro-level we’re excited about what Sony and Microsoft have announced."

What have Sony announced?

ShowanW3254d ago

Andrew announced that Neo was real...

even if there are no confirmed specs...

Pubs/Devs at least know that the product is real

jukins3254d ago

That neo exists? And I'm sure the specs or estimated specs have been revealed to developers

Vitalogy3254d ago

Can you backup your "sureness" by proving your statement?

JasonKCK3254d ago

Dude, the leaked Neo specs are the specs. Otherwise Sony would be denying it and they're not.

Vitalogy3250d ago

That's the thing, sony doesn't have to deny/confirm anything. I'll wait for the official word.

DJStotty3239d ago

Dude, you shouldnt believe anything until an official announcement/reveal has been made.

If sony denied it existed, with people knowing Scorpio will launch next year, that could potentially be damaging to business.

the leaked Neo specs WILL be the Neo specs, once Sony announce the specs, not before.

3254d ago
Bytor3254d ago

I don't think that's what they are going for at least sony the NEO is a PS4 just a premium version. Wen the PS5 comes out in a few years It could have a premium version out along side it or none at all because the NEO will force the PS5 to massive specs EA's way just leaves game design and advancement stagnant and they will put out the same crap every year..

Their console business and GamePass go hand in hand. If they were to stop consoles, they would be, in effect, killing GamePass. The vast majoirty of GP subs are console gamers. If you remove the console, you no longer have 30 million gamers embedded in your ecosystem. The majority will never move to PC gaming and buy a $2000 PC. They will go to Playstation where there is no GamePass.

Again, as with many other forms of we are disrespected and lied to.

Title says Yoshida said $80 games are amazingly affordable. This is a lie.

CrimsonWing691d 10h ago

Perceived value is subjective, so how do you even argue for it? If one person says $500 was worth it because they played a game for six months, what does that mean to someone who didn’t share that experience or see that value?

This is exactly where corporate thinking falls apart. The value is defined by them, and then they twist the logic to defend it from a purely internal, out-of-touch perspective.

I’ve never based the price of a game on how long I’ve played it. There’s a standard price range that consumers feel is fair. If it were truly based on time or value, Resident Evil 2 Remake would cost $20, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would be $1,000.

Honestly, expedition 33 is a prime example of quality for the low. Expedition 33 launched at 50$, and that game gave me more fun than most 60-70$ games I’ve purchased within the last decade.

88313h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Clearly, they want to increase prices. They need to convince people that it’s not so bad. As long as they can do that, they can do whatever they want. You gave an outstanding example of the direction things could go if creators were focused primarily on The community and quality. If that example or a few others like it didn’t exist, it might be hard to convey to many how it is even possible.

pwnmaster30002d ago

I get the concept.
People buy movies for $20-$30 dollars that offers only a couple of hours of enjoyment.
While games offers 3-10+ times the amount of hours and content.
So in theory yeah I get it.

But I will never accept it and would rather keep the price now or even better PS360 price lol

isarai2d ago

On the surface ye that makes sense, but when you realize the budgets are very comparable, you realize it's kinda stupid and overpriced especially when it common for it to be released unfinished

Extermin8or3_1d 6h ago

Not really, movies that have similar budgets have the box office where if they arent a flop- they typically make all their money back or a profit. Movies have a much wider audience. Games however just have that release and have a smaller market.

PapaBop1d 4h ago

Are many people buying movies for $20-$30? Outside of the more dedicated movie goers who have a physical collection, I imagine most rather scoff at that and stick to things like Netflix instead.

DivineHand1251d 4h ago

You also have to take into consideration that most games are enjoyed by one or two people, while movies can be enjoyed by a group of people who are either friends or family.

Another thing is that the value of an entertainment product cannot be judged based on its length, but how it makes the user feel when it is all done.
An example of this is Ubisoft games. They can last close to or exceed 100 hours, yet many people hate on them for doing things to pad the length of the game, while Uncharted 4 and other Naughty Dog games average about 15 hours in length and are hailed as some of the best games of all time.

Petebloodyonion1d 11h ago

The value of an $80 all-you-can-eat buffet is undeniable, making it curious why some people choose a $20 restaurant for a single, standard meal.

In a similar vein, movies, despite their higher production costs for a two-hour experience, outperform video games in revenue while also being priced around $20. Suggesting that video games need 100 hours of diluted gameplay to compete seems like a misdirection. The real solution might lie in re-evaluating how their core offering is valued.

Extermin8or3_1d 6h ago

Individual movies yes, the movie industry as a whole? No, the movie industry is dwarfed by the behemoth in terms of revenue that gaming is.

Also who wants to keep paying a monthly fee every month, there are other options like Guild Wars 2 😁with no monthly fee and while not that many people overall compared to FF XIV, it did increase to about 21 mil now.

I prefer to pay since i do not like guild wars and it keep kids away, but FF14 decreased on quality since they started to make it "more accessible", tried throne and liberty and while it was okay it has so many issues, same for dune awakening... Its time to start making a new FF MMO

Looks like Square Enix is self-aware but still stuck in place, they see the player drop and apologize for the bugs, but nothing really changes. Shame, FFXIV used to be the gold standard

Servbot413d ago

My entire free company has stopped playing. The writing has consistently gotten worse and the content is sparse and lacking; unless you are a hardcore player there's very little for you to do. They are over-catering to the people who will grind three+ times a week on a single fight for multiple months when the playerbase by large doesn't want that sort of content. Square needs to dedicate more resources to the game instead of wasting them on mobile and other live service slop.

Miraak82 2d ago

The biggest factor for me is the way they butchered job design over the years , the casualization and over simplification really hurt a good chunk of enjoyment I used to have . Jobs lost any form of complexity and just became " press glowing button" DDR style for fighting where the gameplay loop is a about the 2 minute burst window . They removed most DoTS, timer mechanics , cast times, pets, RNG ect and all around homogenized everything . When you try and can cater to everyone ... you cater to no one .
