Xbox One S Review

Here are our thoughts of the slim, 4K-enabled Xbox One so far.

If you have a One then obviously this is not for you. I don't so my choices are this model at retail or the plethora of original units in the 2nd hand market.

Price wise, the newer units are not just the same price as previous retail releases but include improvements not found in the previous retail release. If i were just looking to go cheap, then I could take my chance in the 2nd hand market with someone elses system for less.

Now the advantage to going the 2nd hand route is i could potentially get a system with a few games (and possibly kinect) for a really good price. A disadvantage is that it would be the bigger, bulkier model (obviously) and those can vary in reliability depending on the use that previous person has put it through. I have seen some have disc reading issues and some are loud due to the older style cooling system.

Buying new you do get a warranty and the peace of mind that it is new, having not been touched by any other previous owner. decisions, decisions....

@legion, well i have waited this long and another year wouldnt hurt, but then again... I can always buy a scorpio when i am ready. so buying the S 3 years after the One released is no big deal to me. I am glad i waited and i can do the same for scorpio. I don't feel the same need to compete with others in having to have it right when it comes out. My days of being an early adopter have long since passed.

If the Scorpio plays everything the S plays, I'd say just wait. If you buy the S now, and then realize you wanted to Scorpio when it comes out, that would suck. Also, all of the games you are waiting to play would be dirt cheap by then.

I've already got an Xbone, so I'm gonna wait for the Scorpio. There's no need for me to have 3 versions of this gen's Xbox.

I have a few Xbox ones (3, one for me, one for kids and one in my bedroom) I traded in the kids old one, moved mine to them and bought the S. I'll buy the Scorpio next year and the kids can have the slim then

Look the xb1 s is everything the OG xb1 should have been from the start. In other words, its as good as the xb1 could have ever been. But if you have an xb1 there's absolutly no reason to get the S when the next Xbox is coming next year.

I can see the dilema on the ps4 front where a) the neo is significantly faster/improved and b) we know nothing about the ps5 but the xb1 S is simply not needed if you already have a vanila xb1 or you are a blu ray aficionado and have/will buy/ght a 4K HDR TV...

That said getting the S is a no brainer if you have the money to burn then buy the scorpio next year...

I cant decide if MS screwed the S by announcing the Scorpio this soon to this day...perhaps the know Sony's hardware roadmap and reacted? Perhaps they made another out of touch move? Who knows anymore...

I actually was the same way until the Digital Foundry look. We don't have cable or anything, so my wife and daughter use the Xbox for netflix and movies basically all day long. The power ratings DF reported, and some quick energy usage calculators, showed me that upgrading would cost me a bit now, but save me money long term. For that alone I'm upgrading from the Day One Xbox to the S. I had planned to wait till Scorpio, but our power bill is stupid so any little bit to reduce is extremely valuable to us. Scorpio will just have to wait until tax returns.

I do agree on the white though. I can deal with it, but I really wish it was black.

My apartment building caught on fire and I lost my original Xbox One. I was able to save my PC so there's no real reason to wait for the Scorpio for me. So I think I'll be picking myself up a slim model in the near future.

It's definitely not for everyone. I agree with Ryan. If you already have an XB1 and no 4K HDTV, there's no need to get this immediately. Wait for the much more powerful Scorpio, which with having everything the XB1 S has and much, much more. If you don't own an XB1 at all, they definitely grab this now before games like Forza Horizon 3, Sea of Thieves, Gears 4, Recore and Scalebound gets released. The XB1 has a bit more power then the original XB1 (See DF research comparison between the XB1 & XB1 S) and will improve some of your XB1 games.

I will wait for Scorpio. The differences are minuscule between my OG XB1 and this one. Plus I don't want to have a OG XB1, a XB1 S, and a Scorpio along with all the other systems I have. Especially when all of them will allegedly play the same games with Scorpio the only one with potential exclusives. If I felt like I simply HAD to buy another Xbox one I would get a S obviously. Demand simply isn't here for a second atm.

Couldn't agree more. lol I beat Halo 5... now I'm waiting for Crackdown 3 and Scalebound (Recore too I suppose) but who knows when those games will even come out.

I honestly feel a little cheated after buying an Xbox One. It just sits on the shelf and collects dust. Every game I can buy for it almost is on PC too so there's no reason for me to even own one. My Wii U and PS4 see way more game time.

This is what I mean when I say xbo needs more games. When gamers game they beat games and find themselves waiting on another to beat..game releases aren't consistent enough. Especially big time games. Last big time game was QB...before that was halo 5...no TR....that's only 3 major games in 10 months. After Christmas 3rd party games slow dramatically and you only have indies that release, which is awsome...inside easily the best game on xbox so far this year and it's available on pc now and ps4 in a few weeks...xbox needs a couple new franchises to fill it's yearly drought.

That would be like saying the PS4 doesn't have any games. False statements all around. Plenty of games. I still have over 60 B/C games waiting to be installed on my XB1. I just installed RDR. The "Inside" game was just released. Then FH3, Recore, Sea of Thieves, CupHead, Scalebound, Gears 4, Halo Wars 2, We Happy Few, Below, Crackdown 3 etc.. are all coming out within the next year. Then there are tons of 3rd party titles releasing before and during the holidays.

If you decide to get one just make sure you have the right 4k tv. If you don't have a 4k tv I wouldn't even bother getting one. Sony and Samsung both support hdr10 and I believe vizio with their new series p tv do with an update. It is nice though. Nothing really benefits from it however games look a tad bit more smooth compared to the original xbox one.

The Vizio M series which is a small step down from the P series is set to recieve HDR10 support as well sometime in August in addition to it's currently supported Dolby Vision

It's easy to resist play your original x1 lol, an S to me is just a gimmick, a bit more shiny that's all but play the same games nothing more and nothing less than old X1. I rather wait for the Scorpio.

I think the difference is going to start showing in gears and forza that are taking advantage of the HDR. that's another thing that made me go with the gears version instead of the stock 299. I'll upgrade when the games start taking advantage in addition to movies. I'm hoping the s controllers feel better as well.

XBox One launched Nov 22, 2013 and the Scorpio launch in the fall 2017. That's 4 years. No where near 2-1/2, I wonder how many PS fanboys will be skipping the PS4 Neo as well? We know Sony will try and get a more power PS4 Slim to match the Scorpio in 2018. I'll put money on that. Microsoft will stop manufacturing the older XB1 model before the end of this year. They probably have already stopped.

You don't have to buy a console Day One. No company forces you to do it. It's is done on your own accord. Nobody complains when they buy a Galaxy S7/Iphone 6 then 12 months later the S8/Iphone 7 come out. It's the way technology is. If you want the latest and greatest stuff be prepared for something better to come out in a year or 2.

Microsoft made it clear it were a 10 year console . Within 2 1/2 years you have a new updated console with new features , a useless camera, an outdated controller. Do you honestly think myself and others would of gotten ourselves the day one?

Microsoft have lied to it's original users and I won't be buying anything from them until many years later or at all, the damage is done.

Also nice to see the comparison to smartphones and consoles, looks like the throw away generation are moving into gaming.

The XboxOneS is out this year, 2 1/2 years after the XB1 initial release but it is not more powerful hardware, just a smaller form factor and a higher standard for resolution output. Slim SKUs are the norm so this surprises no one.

The Scorpio is out next November for years after the release of the XB1 and is significantly more powerful.

Which is why I'm a little confused about your initial statement. Do you actually feel slighted my MS? Or are you just one of the many raging Sony fanboys on this site that try to throw MS under the bus every opportunity they can?

Console is great and I appreciate the stand the provided. I prefer to have my consoles vertical when possible, saves space, looks cleaner, etc.

Console runs smoothly. It's my first X1 console and... honestly, I hate the menu(s) LOL. I don't think PS4's is great but damn if it isn't simple. Took me 10 minutes to figure out how to find the games with gold available at the time. That is not the consoles fault, I just wish the UI was a tad friendlier.

Console looks sweet, plays 4k blu-rays, it's smaller than the PS4 which is crazy to me. Runs about as loud as a PS4 but I haven't had it on for more than an hour or 2 at a time. The white is super nice and looks REALLY SEXY against the black they have "underneath" (not sure how to describe it but you can see the sleek black color under the white matte top).

Super quick and has 1.6 TB of storage... damn UI must be 400 gigs. Still a lot of space. You still can't swap out HD's (I think X1 OG couldn't swap either). 4K looks nice... if you want a 4K blu ray player, this is what you should buy. No reason to spend $300+ on anything else when you can have full Xbox catalog and 4K Blu-ray.

This is really what the X1 should've been day 1. I am happy and was not going to get Scorpio. Plan on getting NX or NEO or PSVR before Scorpio.

I had and still have a hard time finding certain things on my X1 plus I only play it a few times a week .
Ps3 and ps4 are so much easier to navigate.. Especially the store.
I haven't checked the X1 store since the update so maybe it's a little better now.

So much hate :) ... the UI is blocky and not intuitive on the X1 like it is on the PS4. You don't have to agree but I'd rather have simple paths to settings, the store, PS plus (or Gold), friends, etc.

On PS4... I hit PS button push up and I could move left/right to store, PS plus, messages, party chat, friends, settings, etc. All right there. With X1, since I am not using connect, things are grouped very oddly and not laid out in any sort of open manner. It's not impossible but out of the box it was not as user-friendly as PS UI.

You're silly if you think PS4's UI isn't inherently smarter and simpler than X1's.

2) 2TB advertised is using 1000 bytes = kilobyte, 1000 kilobytes = megabyte, 1000 megabytes = gigabyte, 1000 gigabytes = terabyte ***** However ***** there is actually 1024 bytes = kilobyte, 1024 kilobytes = megabyte, 1024 megabytes = gigabyte, 1024 gigabytes = terabyte

So in actuality, they (and EVERYONE does this with memory) advertised 2TB as 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 2 = 2,000,000,000,000 bytes (2 trillion bytes). But divide that by 1024 bytes and you get 2,000,000,000,000 / 1024 = 1,953,125,000 kilobytes / 1024 = 1907348.6 megabytes / 1024 = 1,862.6 gigabytes / 1024 = 1.82 terabytes.

So you only actually got 1.82 TB (using the 1024 bytes) from that advertised 2 TB. The OS and system apps account for the rest.

My math may be off a bit (I think it's right though) but you get the point.

I have to disagree with the notion you shouldn't upgrade and hold out unless your a new customer. I have all the systems and actually rarely use my xbox one. However, I have a big beautiful 4k tv and have no 4k blu ray player. For me, I can get 150 for the original console, an extra 20 for the kinect and 20 more for an older controller. I can basically upgrade to a better looking, non power brick, behemoth console with with a new 4k blu-ray player for $100. I would suggest that if you do have a 4k tv and are interested in the latest technology while having an original one to trade in it seems like a pretty good deal. Not to mention getting a new controller with no wear.

I got one for being the best/cheapest 4k blu ray hdr player on the market alone....but it doesn't hurt it upscales and hdr's compatible games. I'm happy with it so far....and will get a Scorpio day one

Samsungs is currently cheaper running about $320, and the reviews I've seen on tech sites say it's still slightly better in playback quality for more action oriented scenes. X1S will probably receive updates to fix this though, as it has more hardware muscle behind it than the stand alone players ever will.

Probably a better deal if you're looking for a game console also though, and knowing you, you could have turned in your old X1 to get it cheaper.

For those who are trading the Xbox one for the S are you guys also planning for getting Scorpio? Since you maybe get like maybe less than $200 for the Xbox one, pay the rest and get the S. Then by the time Scorpio comes out you could maybe get again less than $200 for it and pay $250+ extra for Scorpio. Isn't it just better to hold on to the Xbox one if your thinking about Scorpio?

I do want that 2TB model to upgrade my OG Xbox One aka the cinder block, but with NX and PSVR in the budget Ima have to hold off. Hopefully I can make it til Scorpio releases, but both my 2TB PS4 and my 500gb + 500gb HDD X1 are down to the final 150gb of space.

Definitely want one of those new controllers though. Heard they're HID-compliant blutooth, so I can use on my Wii U to play my GameCube games from SD.

I fully understand it not being worth it to upgrade for a large number of people, but I found it to be a more than worthwhile investment from my point of view. Having just recently upgraded our TVs to 4k/HDR enabled sets, and with the credit that I recieved for my trade, I was able to get a UHD Blu-ray player, a peek into the HDR gaming window, an improved standard controller, and additionally a much sleeker/smaller hardware refresh that really does wonders for the available space and aesthetics of my gaming setup for only $150 or so. The fact that they were able to retain it's cooling efficiency and it's quietness while also providing a slight boost to performance that's more than neglible, 4k upscaling, UHD streaming, playback, Blu-rays, and HDR gaming makes this a very worthwhile improvement for me personally. If you don't own an Xbox One and have the desire to, I think that this is definitely the route to go even without a 4k tv, just for all of the other improvements that have been made. The 500gb model will be available for nearly the same price as the launch model currently, and the 1tb is only $50 more than the launch model 1tb variant. If you already own an Xbox One and don't yet own a 4ktv then the S may not be worth upgrading to you. I guess that as is the case with everything it will come down to personal preference, and each individual's respective situation.

I haven't got a 4K TV (yet) but I still choose to buy the xbox-S 2TB for all the other improvements that you mentioned. Also I have noticed my games look slightly sharper now even on my 1080p TV which seems mad or maybe it's just my imagination!.also the slight performance improvements are a welcome addition.

Right now the trend I see

1) if u own xbox one then x1s is not required.
2) if u don't own xbox one then don't buy x1s as scorpio is coming in a yr.
3) there are no games on x1 at all so why buy this or upcoming console and there's only 5% 4k TVs around the world.
4) do not trust MS. They released new console altogether than the cycle (which god only knows who is controlling. Well sony can release a console anytime and its the cycle that this universe has to follow).
5) no exclusives for this box as well. Just build PC

I can understand point 1 or 2. What else did i miss. I am tempted even to upgrade but its not available in my region. Don't know when it will show up. Scorpio for sure.

I don't like how he mentions "...if you spent $2,000 on a 4K TV..." I don't think most people are spending $2,000 on 4K TV's when there are 50" 4K sets out there for $600 from Vizio. More people would realize how accessible 4K TV's are if major outlets like IGN would talk about the less premium TV's.

@199$, it would be tempting. Otherwise Microsoft can kick rocks. A lesser system should sell at a discount compared to its more premium competitors. Imagine a Civic costing the same as a Cadillac. Nobody would ever buy a Civic.

This may be off topic but I can't recall when website and gaming magazines started reviewing actual consoles, systems were either praised or criticized for the amount of software they had and the quality of said software. But this generation is moving much faster and an informed customer is a wise one.

I want an S, but then I think of Scorpio and how awesome it'll be, but then I think of how far off it is and how much it'll cost and just think about building a rig instead. Ugggh, gaming dilemmas.
