It Was A Mistake For Microsoft To Announce The Xbox Scorpio So Soon

With nothing to show and a mixed message coming out from the company, did Microsoft play its hand too early?

Nah... some think it was premature, others think it was fine. MS announced it and what is done is done. No sense getting worried about it now. It comes out when it comes out and people will buy it.

Kingthrash3602845d ago (Edited 2845d ago )

I think it was premature because the Xbox one is still a young console. Yeah, people will buy it but will it be successful? Are they trying to shorten console life cycle? Are they bidding out of consoles period?
How much will it cost?
Is it upgradable?
Will it just be another xbo that was basically a make old games pretty machine instead of a creative machine?
Should I buy a xbox s?
What games will it have?

The scorpio just brought on so many questions With no answers..you are right, what's done is done. But why should we except all this with no answers? Add the fact that it won't have exclusives and we really are talking about why not just buy a pc?...just saying
Depending on the price of the scorpio we don't know how many people will buy in. ...especially if you can build a stronger pc for same price.

freshslicepizza2845d ago

personally i think the whole thing was announced so early for three reasons, onebecause they got wind of the ps4 neo and wanted to ruin their party. the other was to get the word out to developers to keep scorpio in mind when making games so that they can scale them when project scorpio comes out like we see on the pc. the last reason is because the xbox one has been trying to play catch-up with the ps4 ever since both launched. by having a less powerful system and less game studios than sony it really puts them in a inferior position. this is why they are leveraging windows now and want to show they are not going away in console gaming.

gangsta_red2845d ago (Edited 2845d ago )

"...especially if you can build a stronger pc for same price."

I don't know too many people who even consider building a PC as an option. Especially kids, parents, and young adults (tweens and teens). Consoles are still more appealing and still outsell PC's, especially when it comes to it's software so that is truly a false concern.

MS seems to be giving the option to play their games for the PC enthusiast or the console gamer who might want to take advantage of playing games in 4k without having the hassle or need of buying all the necessary components to have to make a strong PC.

Some of your questions I feel can already be answered using common sense and from past articles on the topic.

How much will it cost? Since it was just announced i wouldn't expect a price announcement until closer to it's release. They did the same for a lot of other consoles in the past, I would think it should also be applied to Scorpio too.

Is it upgradable? I am pretty sure Phil shot down that notion of a modular Xbox in a past interview(s).

Will it be successful? If anyone knew the answer to this question I think we would all be wiping our butts with 1000 dollar bills.

Bidding out of consoles period? Three options of Xbox on the market...how exactly are they bidding out of consoles, especially when they already stated numerous times they aren't.

What games will it have? You know all the games that release for X1, X1s and Win 10...those will be the games the Scorpio will have.

ShottyatLaw2845d ago

If someone is on an aggregate video game news site like N4G and still has these types of questions, I'm embarrassed for them.

Seriously. This feigned "confusion" has gone from laughable to sad.

TheHorseTamer2844d ago (Edited 2844d ago )

People knows iPhone 7 is coming, Neo is coming so are those mistakes as well? The only difference here is Microsoft announcing it at their E3 press conference and let people decide now. Sony will announce their Neo at the Tokyo Game show with a release date and specs to follow and people here will celebrate. Put that in the bank.

Microsoft is just being more transparent with their fans and potential buyers that if they want the most powerful console ever made with 4K and VR gaming, it will be here next Fall. If they have no need for it, the Slim with an attractive price is here in a couple months to fit their need.

If they would have had hid it until next year, people that are saying they announced it too soon will turn around and say they are not transparent enough and people that bought the Slim model are mislead. You knows how it goes.

zb1ftw7772844d ago

The console lifecycle hasnt been shortened.

5 years is the norm.

Mrveryodd2844d ago (Edited 2844d ago )

you could say the same for the neo

donthate2844d ago

I think MS announcement of Scorpio was quite a success. Everybody is talking about it all the time, and everybody is anticipating it. Heck, it made even Sony pull a 180, and now have to rethink things while claiming they will only show it when they have games to go with it. Ironically, MS announcement mirrors Sony's playbook with PS2 against Dreamcast, and again with PS4.

This is also great for consumers, because you now know the roadmap and can decide for yourself what is the right console for you, Xbox One S or Xbox "the monster" Scorpio.

Trash360:

How many will buy in?

I think more people will buy Scorpio than Neo, because Neo has weaker hardware. As you go up in the performance chart, the cost savings become better and better. That is why PS4 and XB1 is so close in cost, despite the performance difference. Combine this with Play Anywhere and I think it is a compelling package. Even more so when MS makes PC VR headset(s) compatible with Xbox Scorpio.

^^
I think Kingthrash is insane, probably use to work janitor for Microsfot and got fired idk. But fact is he is very personal about this subject, I guess he really cares about Microsoft.

ZeroX98762845d ago

well for me the major points were that it'll run games in 4K native, hence the Scorpio being the equivalent of an high end PC, and that games could be exclusive to the Scorpio.

Rude-ro2844d ago

Will not run, can run. It will be completely up to the developers. I would not expect a lot of 4K games.

King_Lothric2844d ago

People bought the xbox One too. Was it a commercial success that helped MS to reign the console market? Nope. People bought the Wii U too in fact and look where it is.

darthv722844d ago

If you mean sony not showing neo then you are right. That is their reaction allright.

G20WLY2844d ago

^Sure, Sony's hand was forced, but there's a big difference when you look at the anticipated release dates of Neo and Scorpio. Announcing something so far off (when you're still trying to sell it's predecessor and a new 'S' version) is crazy.

If you look at it that way, you could just as easily suggest Sony has forced MS hand due to the PS4:Xbox1 sales ratio.

Sony (probably) being forced into acknowledging that Neo is coming is not necessarily a terrible thing, given how close it is to release by comparison to Scorpio. Forgetting rumoured specs of either, I don't think any of us know enough about the market to be able to say for sure whether this move - bizarre as it may seem from the outside looking in - was a desperate one or a clever one.

Errorist762844d ago

The last months the PS4 sold at a rate of 3:1. They had to do something to prevent the rest of their fans from switching. Even if it wasn't anything more than some specs.

rainslacker2843d ago (Edited 2843d ago )

Mistake would be relative to what they were trying to achieve, and if they achieved it, and ultimately, if what they hoped to achieve was a mistake, which in itself would be subjectively relative to the entire situation and one's own outlook.

I doubt it hurt them or anything.

I personally would have preferred a bit more with the announcement, because as it stands, not much is known for the consumers to really base any kind of purchasing decision on it, and I do feel it could detract from the X1S, which in itself could have been a mistake, but probably isn't really bad for the consumer themselves, because at least it's out there. With X1S, they at least gave enough info for the consumer to make a reasonable decision on if they might be interested in it based on what it had to offer.....not so much with the Scorpio, which as more PR rhetoric than actual factual information that the consumer could use....and has led to quite a bit of speculation on what it means for the consumer.

I think, that, at least there is some sort of transparency coming from MS for once. Whatever about Scorpio possibly killing off the slim early, I think it would have been worse to wait. Think about it. Had the announced just the slim this year, many would have gone out to buy it, then come E3 next year, we have another announcement for a another new hardware that's EVEN BETTER! People would get mad. I think telling everyone what they have coming up is the better approach in this case.

blackout2845d ago

That's the point. Microsoft giving people a choice. They could have been greedy and said FU, take this Slim then said hey we have a Scorpio at E3 2017 with no upgrade program. Once again loving the new vision at Microsoft.

Rude-ro2844d ago

After only three years of the Xbox one, is that not what they are doing? Saying fu. Not enough support so we are launching the next iteration...

UltraNova2844d ago

Yeah they are giving you the choice to be either left behind or shell out more to buy the new stuff. This applies to Sony as well but to their defence they are known to support previous gen consoles for at least a few years down the line so its MS who step up first.

As for the articles question i d say ask me again in 2 years.

rlow12844d ago

Couldn't agree more with you. The slim pre-orders are doing well on Amazon and the last I checked it was ranked third. So the demand is there. I think this strategy will end up working well for them.

donthate2844d ago

Exactly, MS is making future investment with this as well. Bold move, but in hindsight so many benefits like

* Clear roadmap
* Consumers can decide what they want, and not be upset combined with stalling competitor platform
* Developers are now fully aware of what is coming so they can target their games and prepare games releasing this year for it
* Get media talking
* Stalled competitors plan and put it in limbo

I would say, MS did a marvelous job both from a consumer and developer perspective to even the business case. All the while, Xbox One S is selling like hotcakes.

Sony's answer?

No PS4 slim announced, and no PS4K/Neo news.

ninsigma2844d ago

Why are you bringing Sony into this?? You were bang on a part from your last comment and the stalling. Sony have acknowledged the Neos existence and also said it wouldn't be at e3. So because they did what they said they were gonna do, it's been stalled?? You make no sense what so ever.

rainslacker2843d ago (Edited 2843d ago )

Developers didn't need an announcement to the public to be made aware. It was made known before the announcement to developers in fact. That's why I shut up about the rumors on many of the forums, and stuck to the principals of a mid gen release....just so I wouldn't inadvertently break some NDA.

I'd say the roadmap isn't as clear as you'd make it out to be. We know some of MS plans with their MSGS and Windows, and even Xbox. But while I'd like to trust MS fully, my skepticism of them as a company don't allow me to fully say they have laid out the full truth of what it will mean for the OGX1/X1S going forward. MS has a bad habit of saying they'll be all about something, then completely drop support without much notice, or quickly dwindle support hoping people won't notice. This is even more true for products that aren't performing the way they want them to. Also their idea of what support entails isn't always what the consumer believes support should be. For instance, they were claiming how much they supported the 360 in the last couple years, despite most of their offerings being Kinect titles and the yearly staple game release.

So, while I'm glad they made it clear they are releasing a new console, their roadmap often changes at a moments notice to suit whatever it is they want to achieve as a company, and I doubt Phil, no matter what he wants, would be able to stop that.

*Get media talking

That's great and all, and they did that, but lets be realistic here. You know how quickly hot topics can subside around the gaming community. MS gained the spotlight, but eventually that's going to fade. They'll still get the notice from the announcement, and subsequent information to come, but until the thing actually releases, any number of things can and likely will supplant the topic-du-jour. The actual Neo announcement is going to push Scorpio out of the spotlight, just as Scorpio has pushed the X1S out of the spotlight. Given that it's almost a year and a half away, that's a long time to keep the media, and the communities interest....particularly with the large number of big game titles, PSVR, and Neo/PS4 Slim looming.

*Stalled competitors plans and put it in limbo

That's just speculation with absolutely no merit. Only the rumors put the Neo out for this year, and Sony has shown no indication that they are ready to announce it fully yet for this year, or even for anytime soon. There is absolutely no proof outside of wild speculation, that Sony is reacting to the Scorpio in a way that is causing them to change their plans, or the system whatsoever.

I think they did something that is beneficial for the consumer, whether planned or not I wouldn't know. I think you may be overstating just how brilliant a business move it actually is, because what they did can easily be seen as a gamble based on what they believed the competition would do, and if that's the case, that means MS is in a very reactive position, and as of yet, there is no way to tell if this is a brilliant move, because the final results can't be quantified in any way. It also assumes that Sony doesn't have it's own counter move in place, and no one will ever know if that move was their original intent all along, because they haven't done anything but confirm that there is something behind Neo. Are you willing to say that Sony was also brilliant by saying that Neo exists? Because ultimately, that's about all MS did beyond the PR hyperbole.

rainslacker2843d ago (Edited 2843d ago )

Definitely merit to that argument. Lack of details aside, at least it's out there, and people at least know it's coming, so no one can say MS tricked them.

If MS made a mistake, at least they erred in a way that is beneficial to the consumer in some way. Might be a mistake for MS business, but only time can truly tell the outcome despite the fan boys rampant speculation. However, for the general consumer, they are in a much better position than having to speculate on rumored specs and take a gamble on a potential purchasing decision based on what MS may or may not do. Don't see why people would complain about something that is good for the consumer side, we shouldn't have that much devotion to business IMO.

Edit@Below

Smear campaign? Yeah, that's my intention as opposed to trying to bring reason to exaggerated expectations and over stated impact.

And of course Neo is going to take over Scorpio's spotlight. MS can't keep Scorpio in the dark forever to keep the speculation up forever. The spotlight will bounce between the two. That's how marketing goes. Most of the articles now are highly speculative, and extremely assumptive, and people such as yourself are doing the same thing. It has nothing to do with what's positive or not, because so little is known, that it's hard to say one way or the other how things will turn out in the end.

Sony on the other hand isn't hyping up either a Neo or a slim. Do you think that when they do go to market, they're going to be so inept in their messaging and delivery and that the Neo is so poor in comparison to the Scorpio, that there is no way that Sony can actually pull that proverbial rabbit out of their hat? That just defies logic, especially since you know less about it than we do Scorpio.

Sony isn't the one that needs the course correction right now, nor do they seem to be trying to right any ship, so not sure what position you think Sony is in.

And yes, devs need the information. That's why they're given the info. Announcing it does make it easier to get the info out there, but it's not the typical channel for such things, and it wasn't this time. I may remain anonymous for the benefit of critiquing games and the industry the way i want to in my private life, but I do work for a company which has access to this info before the general public does. Anyone with the proper qualifications and access would as well....indie or not. Not all devs have those qualifications and access, even with the announcement, as it's a process on how to get them.

I never said there wasn't a lot of positive press or fan excitement for the system/s themselves. Just that assuming that press will sustain itself for 18 months at the same level, isn't typical. Any number of things could be revealed which can quickly change things up, and with MS, they often do or say things which derail their own hype. In the mean time, all that press, and all that talk, is basing all that excitement on the most cursory of knowledge about Scorpio itself. For all intents and purposes, more is known about the upcoming slim, and how it will affect the customer, and it isn't getting anywhere near the attention, and IMO the general consumer isn't being informed the benefits aren't as staggering if they don't have an HDR TV, so in relation to this article, that could be considered a mistake as it marginalizes the importance of the X1S and the attention it could be receiving, but in this instance, I'm going to say it's fine, because it's actually more beneficial to the consumer to be informed regardless of how much information is out there.

donthate2843d ago

Sorry, but the idea that Neo is going to somehow take over Scorpio's spotlight isn't going to happen. It's going to be a temporary bump, and then they are right back at speculating what Scorpio will be able to do, and what sort of news is coming from MS.

Unless Sony can pull a rabbit out of their hat, drop a bunch a millions, then there is no course correction here.

Regarding, devs need for information? Yeah, indie devs need to be informed and I don't believe for one second an anonymous supposed dev gets information about Scorpio in advance.

Regarding quantification, that's easy. Just take a look at how many articles are discussing Scorpio and how positive it is. Just do a Google trend search and you can confirm it yourself!

So please, take your MS smear campaign somewhere else.

Damned if they do damned if they don't. At least I know what's going on so I don't buy a system I don't need.

dms52232844d ago (Edited 2844d ago )

Lol seriously! Why are these articles even getting approved still?

If Microsoft waited to announce it at next years E3, then everyone would be pissed that they bought an Xbox One S a year earlier when they would have liked the knowledge of a newer console coming just a year later. Half the people on here would cry out "see!!! M$ is just tryying to screw u outta money!! Evil company!! >:( "

rainslacker2843d ago

Yep, and if it's beneficial for the consumer, then why would anyone complain?

I could have criticisms or questions about the actual info offered, which may or may not affect my decision to purchase an X1S or Scorpio, but no one is in the dark about it's existence and looming release date, so they can decide if they want to buy an X1S, wait for more info on Scorpio before deciding, or just wait it out for Scorpio without having to guess if the rumors are true, or just decide not to buy any of them. Choice is good.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers13h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

just_looken6m ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.
