AMD RX 490 Teased for 4K Gaming, The Missing Polaris Emblem

After the launch of the amazing bang for the buck RX 480, AMD has started to tease the upcoming “high-end” AMD RX 490 for 4K gaming. However, the launch of RX 480 targets the budget area of the market. Nvidia’s top dogs, the GTX 1070 and 1080, are still going strong with no competition from AMD’s side.

Ah the 1080 competitor! Nice!

And I'll also tell you why, its cus the 1080 1070 1060 and these 2 new radeon cards are just fast cash grab cards to hush consumers up. The real powerhouse cards are what gonna come in 2 or 3 years.

BlacKJesu53278d ago

That can be said every year. ...

Angeljuice3278d ago

Then why are you waiting 5 years to upgrade?

"My water cooler 980ti will out perform this card lol."
Did you blow your wad too early? You could have had the same setup with 1080's which would beat yours hands down.

"But both of my 980ti cards together outperform everything in the market right now muahahahahahah!"

Drugs are bad M'kay

Hold_It3278d ago

Because they're a blind Nvidia fanboy. They might be outperforming the 490 at DX11 games but not at DX12.

Most likely a 1070 competitor. AMD has seemingly always fallen short of Nvidia's flagship.

This chip could very well be what will be going into the Scorpio though.

Waiting to see if they can competitively price one before I pull the trigger on a slimmer replacement for my 980 ti (downsizing to mini-ITX).

Software_Lover3278d ago

I only build Mini-ITX now. Have been doing so the past 2-3 years. I don't miss my full tower case and Motherboard, with one GPU anymore lol.

Deeke3278d ago

I really think the Scorpio's Polaris GPU will borrow more from the RX 490 than the RX 480. Bear in mind the chip IS NOT a desktop-grade video card, and therefore can't be a 1:1 equivalent. That being said, I still feel the Scorpio's graphics hardware will be based more on the Radeon RX 490 than the 480, especially given the RX 490 is focused more on 4K gaming.

Aenea3278d ago

And I really think the Scorpio will be using AMD's Vega that will be available next year.

Deeke3278d ago

That...would be insane! I think a VEGA chip might be too much, considering we have evidence the Scorpio will rock a custom SoC with Zen + Polaris. Also remember Scorpio is at 6TFLOps, and the RX 480 tops out at 5.5 TFLOPs, so the next step up would be the RX 490.

According to info from videocardz.com, the RX 490 is more optimized towards 4K gaming than the RX 480. I'm not sure if AMD will have VEGA ready to be scaled alongside Zen or not even though it launches next year.

But anything is possible! With a VEGA derived GPU the console would be super expensive...

Aenea3278d ago

Polaris isn't able to reach 6Tflops as it is now and since consoles usually clock the GPUs lower so it underperforms it's likely they will be using an underclocked Vega to reach 6Tflops.

I don't think there's any evidence, just some knowledgeable people trying to figure stuff out, what I've read about that actually suggests that the Polaris won't be fast enough for what MS is trying to achieve, so a modified Vega with some CUs turned off (to get better yields and thus cheaper prices) and the clock speed below that of Vegas used in desktop cards it's rather possible to achieve just what they promised.

Also, this article says that the rx490 does not have a Polaris emblem and talks about it might have the Vega instead. All depends on when AMD is gonna release the rx490 tho, if it's this year I doubt it will be using the Vega, tho I have no clue have far along they are with the Vega.

I looked at videocardz.com, they list it as using a 14nm Vega 10...

As for Zen, it's possible they are using a Zen Lite CPU which apparently is already further in development than the full blown Zen... (actually some rumours said even the PS4 Neo might already be using this)

Deeke3278d ago

It all depends on if the Neo is coming out in 2016 or not. If it is, it definitely won't use Zen, as AMD hasn't even finished it yet.

As for videocardz, I didnt even see their RX 490 catalog page! This is what I saw, leading me to believe the RX 490 was at least in the same Polaris family (the chart) http://videocardz.com/61721...

But this page http://videocardz.com/amd/r... certain changes things.

Slightly overclocked RX 480 it is then! I just thought since Microsoft was touting "true 4K" they'd go with something that has more power than the RX 480, although the 480 -can- hit native 4K gaming...at least the desktop version can.

I was given to believe the semi-custom AMD SoC that powers the Scorpio would be underwhelming compared to its desktop card derivative (aka the RX 480, in this case).

Also remember that these console-based GPUs aren't 1:1 to desktop cards. I doubt it'll be Vega-based simply because of cost, and the RX 490 being a Vega card seems to be a rumor.

I'm just concerned about Polaris perf-per-watt...maybe it'll scale more efficiently like Zen?

duplissi3278d ago

Definitely not. Microsoft has said that project scorpio has ~6 Teraflops of compute. The RX 480 has 5.8 Teraflops of compute. The gpu in Scorpio is almost certainly a customized 480. The 490, will likely land around 8-11 Teraflops. The 490 will be for 4k, simply because it is faster.

Afrokk3277d ago

Agreed. And if the Scorpio does feature RX 490, it will cost way too much then, destroying the point of cheap 4K gaming..

mochachino3278d ago

This is the card I'm really waiting for.

Afrokk3277d ago

I hope it doesn't disappoint.

It’s definitely an upgrade, not sure about massive.

Grilla2h ago

It is massive compared to the switch 1. 6-10X the power, but compared to current standards it’s the bare minimum.

RedDevils2h ago

It's just a minor upgrade nothing special. Could have included the Oled screen but greedy Nintendo have something planned for it already.

Yesyes1h ago

Oled screen means nothing when people have OLED tv's.

Rage771h ago

You are self aware of how dumb and "sheepy" that tagline of "greedy" sounds like at this point in time, right?
Every little entitled twat on the internet has used it ad nauseum, as if all of a sudden you somehow struck gold or something. it ALMOST sounds as infantile as the other meme vomit brain rot: "Defending the billion dollar company, blah, blah" FFS. tell me its "irony" at least what you are trying to express, so at least i can give you some credit for being "clever" or bold. I refuse to believe you ACTUALLY believe what you are saying, unironically,

repsahj2h ago

Great review! We have almost the same impression of the Switch 2. I don't care if the screen isn't OLED, because when I put it next to my friend's Steam OLED screen, they barely deviated in quality.

anast1h ago

Better than the Steam Deck not as good as the other consoles on the market.

As someone who has been gaming nearly as long as gaming has been around (since the early 70's), you'd think I'd be against this. Having grown up with all the major platforms and the whole notion of physical ownership... but I'm not. i embrace this as it is a revolutionary convenience. And one i know for a fact many (especially here) have not even given the fair chance to use. I get it... i was there too. But now i have a new outlook on it. It really is a hell of an option if you just want to play with no commitments. By no means am i saying this should replace traditional gaming, its an option. And one that people should look at optimistically as a way to compliment traditional gaming. There is room for both to thrive.
