Why Oculus and HTC Need to Watch Out for Sony in VR

Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR headset may end up winning the virtual-reality market at least for a while, since it’s cheaper than competitors and millions of people already own a PlayStation 4.

Does the PSVR headset work on PC? Do the Rift and Vive work on PS4? No? Then they aren't competing. It's irrelevant if the PSVR sells more or less than the Rift and Vive. Those that want high end VR on their PCs will get the Vive or the Rift. Those that want VR on their PS4 will get the PSVR headset.

ORyanDeee3289d ago

Doesnt matter if they are competing or not, they will still be compared.

Lonnie183289d ago

Sony will surpass HTC, and Oculus in sales day 1 lol!

Lamboomington3289d ago

@Lonnie18

Obviously, but again, what's the point of that comparison ? Oculus and Vive don't need to watch out for anything.

kneon3289d ago

It is very relevant, if the PSVR succeeds in becoming THE place for VR then that's where the general consumer will go. Having been working extensively with VR for over a year now I'm confident that PC based VR is not ready for the masses, it's just too complicated. If Sony makes it easy then the mainstream VR will be PSVR and Samsung's Gear VR. Though Google's DayDream should displace Gear VR if it ever launches.

s45gr323289d ago

What is so complicated about PC VR. That you pay more, is that what makes it complicated ok if you say so.

kneon3289d ago

It's the usability. It's fine for us, but I've been having many "normal" people try it out and they easily get lost trying to set it up and use it. Even GearVR is a challenge for many.

These aren't gamers, and they probably won't play games. They will be much more interested in VR experiences and 360 video and live viewing.

OB1Biker3289d ago

Yea the companies have been saying there's no competition and all are pushing VR market and all. But what we see is an actual competitive VR market that is developing more and more with exclusive deals and price war.
Sony also said they were looking into bringing PSVR to PC if I remember correctly.

ILostMyMind3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

It is cheaper so, why not? But i think, someday, Sony will produce a better PS-VR for PC and a "new PS".

DragonDDark3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Sony will never go PC. If they allow it to go to pc, it will have the same hardware. Not better it worse.

loadstone0073289d ago

Don't agree. If a consumer wants to buy into VR, and he has no equipment what-so-ever, they will consider all systems. I do see them as competitors.
Also, you can bet on it that the Rift will work on Project Scorpio. Especially when Microsoft will see Sony's sucess with PS VR (and I expect it to sell out for a year straight).

Ark_3289d ago

A consumer with no equipment whatsoever will go for Samsung Gear VR and such.
I don't see a demographic interested in these gaming headsets other than gamers and maybe developers right now. And those own one or another platform allready.

Competition will not start before Scorpio releases in 1,5 years imo.

jwillj2k43289d ago

Sony has already stated that they are looking into making psvr work with pc.

starchild, you are what happens when a gamer tries to be a businessman.

it doesnt work. your mind is gamer oriented and simplistic. you have no foresight and you measure quality in pixels.

Ofcourse its a direct competitor to the sales of the rift and vive. Ofcourse there are ps4 gamers out there who want VR. ofcourse they much rather pay a smaller initial entry price of the PSVR to experience the same, maybe slightly worse, VR experience. ofcourse its gonna hold them off until Rift and Vive become less expensive and computers capable of running them become less expensive. Ofcourse i will invest into PSVR to hold me off until rift2 and vive2.

why wouldnt you? yea if you have extra cash laying around, sure by all means get the vive or rift to experience the best of the best, but thats just like comparing buying an audi r8 vs a ferrari 458 speciale. Duh, the ferrari is better and you still have a super car in the audi r8 at the end of the day.

jesus christ, shortsighted as f***

I have a feeling psvr will be like when kinect was first released. A bunch of people will buy it on pure hype alone

Fishy Fingers3289d ago

I'm sure that'll be the case but unlike Kinect there's certainly a place for VR going forward. But it'll remain niche for the foreseeable future.

SkippyPaccino3289d ago

For sure there's a future. My comment was meant as a compliment since I remember going to bestbuy during boxing day the year kinect was released and almost everyone in a huge line had a kinect in hand and I couldn't really understand why when most of the things you could do with it were garbage... Lol!

I'm still on the fence on psvr since it's 550$ in Canada, but if it was 399$ I would be more tempted. I rather spend that money on a PS neo since I recently bought a 4K tv

I will be laughing once everyone sees that PSVR is as powerful as Samsung Gear VR. Face it, until the PS4 Neo releases, VR on consoles will not flourish. VR will grow and get better on PC and PC alone maybe smartphone.

ApocalypseShadow3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Stop lying to yourself and others. People are tired of misinformation being spread.

alb18993289d ago

Not so sure about it because the ps4 isn't powerful enough for VR. Until i proove be wrong i think there will be a lot of disappointment with the psvr on ps4.....with NEO is another thing.

ApocalypseShadow3289d ago

If PSVR is coming out this October, and works on existing PS4s, how about you prove to us you're right. Because, right now, your wrong.

It's like saying Microsoft is releasing Xbox Scorpio because the current Xbox one and Xbox s aren't powerful enough to produce quality games with high frame rates or resolution. Would that be true? Or FUD spreading?

Right now you're FUD spreading.

alb18993289d ago

So, there we have it.

As many suspected, the PS4 is not nearly powerful enough to support the PSVR headset all by itself, at least not at the level of visual fidelity that Sony presumably wants for it. Instead, the headset will require an external processor that will supplement the PS4 to even be able to run.

Polygon

ApocalypseShadow3288d ago

If you did your research properly, you would see that you're wrong again. That external box has no CPU or GPU.

Processing 3D audio and sending video to the TV normally is not extra power.

alb18993288d ago

OK, if the ps4 has power enough.... Why do we need NEO? WHY?

Sony is all-in on PlayStation Plus, says its most expensive tier is thriving

Glad, I’m about to downgrade when they raise the price. For me, I don’t really access much or care about the games they have in the library and if I do, it’d be cheaper to just buy them over time rather than stick to some expensive subscription model.

crazyCoconuts8h ago

When you're new to the service you've got an avalanche of games to play. After you catch up, I agree, it's not worth it beyond the Essential tier for me.
That being said, the Essential tier is the best deal in console gaming imo, based on the monthly games you get to keep.

Profchaos2h ago

Yeah same will be downgrading $214 aud is insane and we don't even get the streaming capabilities in Australia which they said would make the top level subscription cheaper.

If i was to just buy the games I actually play that come to the service id be far better off.

Ill keep the essential tier to retain the games ive collected since the ps3 and for mp but I'm not convinced of the premium tiers value any more

Alos889h ago

Extra is probably the best value for money right now, Premium doesn't have anything special enough to justify paying the additional imo.

OtterX8h ago

*unless you have a Portal & you catch Premium on discount during Days of Play or Black Friday.

Yea, I really do wish they'd up their effort on Premium titles, but allowing a large catalog of titles that can stream to your Portal without even having to use your PS5 is pretty awesome. We travel about 2 hours to stay with my inlaws from time to time, so it's been pretty killer to only need to take my Portal for that!

andy857h ago

Yup if you have a portal premium is the best tier for sure

jznrpg8h ago

Add some more classics with trophies. Vagrant Story first

OtterX8h ago

Nice choice. I agree!

Jeanne D'Arc was my favorite PS+ catalog title from last year & I Platinumed it!

Eonjay6h ago

I like Ridge Racer, Tekken and Grandia. Add Xenogears, digimon World 3, Classic GTA and ill be happy

jznrpg4h ago

Jeanne D’Arc was great!

@Eonjay there is a Grandia collection available for PS4, I’m not sure if it’s been on plus already or not

darthv728h ago

cloud streaming to the portal, without using the ps5, is the selling point of premium to me.

Obscure_Observer8h ago

If the consumers are happy, Sony is even happier.

It is what it is.

Lol, maybe I'm becoming an old fart, but excessive violence in VR seems to bother me more than in flat games. Feels more visceral when you're looking a person in the eyes before mutilating them.

By no means am I trying to be a prude and saying these games shouldn't exist. I just play them more sparingly, need more breaks. I need some beautiful, refreshing & relaxing VR experiences too to balance them out so I don't feel so heavy.

Babadook73d ago

I’m an old fart too. I couldn’t believe how violent saints and sinners was.
