Payton: Japan's No Longer the Center of the Gaming Universe and Developers Know It

Ryan Payton, self-described game hobo, fresh off working on Metal Gear Solid 4 and a cross-country move from Japan back to Seattle, took some time to sit down with me this weekend to talk development, Japan and life.

Payton's move back from Japan to the U.S. couldn't come at a better time for a game developer, as the focus on game development seems to be shifting from former dev powerhouse Japan to the U.S. Japan may still be the center of the gaming universe when it comes to cold hard cash, but when it comes to development it no longer seems to be, Payton said.

"The Japanese public seems to be disinterested in next-gen and high definition gaming," he said, pointing to the 360 and its apparent uphill battle in Japan as proof of that. "There is a stigma still attached to western technology there."

Get off the MS vs. Sony fanboy sh!t. Stick to the subject at hand. Just as much Japan delivers good games, the US can deliver some blockbuster hits, too.

He said that the japanese arent interested in next gen gaming and high def! But if his comment is true... then that means they are not interested in the Ps3...

It would explain why the Wii is selling so well though!

Japanese gaming is a relic of it's former self!

Ryan Payton thinks that if Square-Enix buy Tecmo then Square would go back to its golden days and become the company it once was

Unfortunately i doubt it

Japan is all about mini games and handhelds while us North Americans care for the good stuff. Sure, I don't mind the casual stuff once in a while but too much off that would make me into a hardcore Nintendo fanboy who only play Wii sports and other crap they think is amazing.

last time I checked, DS, WII and PSP all selling well in Japan and indeed doing even better in NA!

One could argue that Europe is bringing the innovation this generation. With titles like LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, etc

Rock Bottom3701d ago

I have doubt about Killzone 2 being an awesome game, but innovation is not something KZ2 have?

qwertyuiopasdfghjkl3701d ago

Sorry kiddies, I meant to say "BlockBusters". Europe is bringing the BLOCK BUSTERS.

Rock Bottom3701d ago

I meant to say "I have NO doubt about Killzone 2 being an awesome game"...
Somehow I skipped the "NO" and the whole meaning changed(sorry)...

The thing is, KZ2 will be an awesome game, it's just not that much of an innovative game.
