Microsoft's silence on Scorpio puts Xbox One S in a bad place

Destructoid - "We need to know more, Project Scorpio. Yesterday, Microsoft began its E3 press conference by introducing the Xbox One S -- a new, smaller model of Xbox One. It closed the press conference by introducing Project Scorpio -- a significantly more powerful take on the Xbox One."

Yes, the Scorpio will likely cannibalize sales of the Slim to some extent. Some will wait to buy their first X1, and some will wait to upgrade their vanilla X1. It's not the best approach to increased sales, but it's one of the most pro-consumer moves we've seen from MS. Staying completely silent on the Scorpio's existence and releasing only shortly after the reveal would only demonstrate typical corporate greed.

If you buy a Slim in the next 18 months, you do so with full knowledge of the upcoming Scorpio. Any buyer's remorse is your own doing. While they have not given a precise price point on the Scorpio (calling it only a "premium price"), you can rest assured it won't be the $299 of the Slim.

I'm a consumer, not a shareholder, so I support the early reveal. Transparency in their hardware plans, cross-buy with PC, and backwards/forwards compatibility are pro-consumer and deserve praise. Like any of these corporations, MS often deserves our skepticism, but if you are going to voice outrage over the negative, you also have to praise the positive.

This was the right approach in my view, even if it means less sales. They have a long way to go to becoming consumer-friendly, but I can't fault their recent moves.

Eonjay3020d ago

I don't really think the Scorpio actually exists yet. I think it was a haphazard attempt at fighting the leaked Neo across social media. At the end of the conference he struggles to explain why they announced it so early. There are no actual specs. It is a target. An idea.

DivoJones3020d ago

Well to announce it's processing power (teraflops) implies they've settled on their processor, and most device anymore have an APU chip that is both the CPU and GPU. But it's very possible they have a separate GPU to really maximize their video output. Probably won't hear any more from MS about it until next years E3.. hopefully my TV dies before it comes out so I can justify upgrading to a 4K.

Software_Lover3020d ago

Scorpio was "leaked" well before the Sony Neo stuff was.

nix3020d ago

I really have a thought... Every big company before launching a new product does intensive research. I really want to know who their target audience were when they did the QnA. Did they just gather few Xbox hardcore fans and asked them if they would like to see a new powerful console?

The answers were probably a triumph yes! I've seen few Xbox hardliners here but they are so out of touch with their fellow Xboxers. Recent example was QB. How it was hailed as the best looking game and how it was going to outsell everything and how everyone and their grandmas were getting it but hardly even anyone outside this community bought it.

I see the same resemblance here with Scorpio. OMG CAN'T WAIT TO BUY SCORPIO! And what new games are they going to play on it? I have not seen any new announcements made by MS. So all these hype just to play existing games on higher resolution? Is anyone even thinking that logically?

ShottyatLaw3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

That just sounds like an attempt to downplay the Scorpio. You don't negotiate multi-billion dollar contracts with chip manufacturers haphazardly, and negotiating those deals is the first step to bringing any of these devices to fruition.

But let's say you are right. Early in the year, Spencer gives an interview where he drops the idea of the mid-gen hardware upgrade. He then adds that he wants to go up in "big numbers." Then they announce a 6tf 320gb/s machine. If this was all in response to Sony, that means he managed to be first to discuss it, first to announce it to the masses, and managed to build a machine superior to his competitor. So if your theory is right, MS just completely pulled the rug out from under Sony every step of the way.

Regardless, if their response to Neo is to build an even better machine, gamers win. I'll take that.

Windows 10 cannibalize sales of both the Xbox Slim and Xbox Scorpio. The informed consumer purchases a console for their exclusives first and access to 3rd party games. A lot of people are going to realize its smarter to just upgrade their PC since they can get all of the exclusives that way and access to much more content.

Jamesx82x3020d ago

An informed consumer considers those things but you are assuming 1 thing that generally drives people to console over PC is exclusives and thats not always the case. There are other reasons people choose console over PC. Ease of use, using a controller to play games both single and multiplayer. less cheaters in online gaming when your on a closed system like consoles. Where your friends play. Im not saying WIndows 10 wont cannibalize sales because for the person who likes PC gaming and has a PC built for gaming but wanted Xbox exclusives they no longer need to buy one but people play on consoles for lots of reasons and I dont think Windows 10 is gonna be a big issue.

Rookie_Monster3020d ago

Looks like the cannibalizing is not happening as the $399 XB1 Slim is the best selling overall console on Amazon and #10 overall in videogame sales. http://www.amazon.com/best-...

#2 best videogame sellers on Amazon UK, ahead of PSVR http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bes...

This is even before the $299 SKU is available for pre order. imagine the damage that Sku will do!!!

Masterchief_thegoat3020d ago

So far is doing much better in pre order sale than fat Xbox. plus is cheap 4K while it also plays games right now when it hits in aug. plus 4K tv having them good ass deals on Best Buy Amazon etc

LackTrue4K3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

Where aré you guys getting that 299 price tag???? Microsoft website has it for 399!
@bellow "thanks"

ziggurcat3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

the 500GB model is $299. there's also a 1TB model for $349.

They have stayed silent on what it looks like because it's not been finalised , they have talked about it plenty after e3 and how they see the gaming industry

The bottom line is , where you want to accept it or not is that the gaming industry became stale while people where picking up the latest tablet to play the sims or upgrading the PC to play in ultra HD the gaming console was stuck on old powered machines and a limited community

Ms are aiming Scorpio at high end users , who want the best graphics and power and retaining the Xbox community. The Xbox will have three models next year , the basic one , the middle one , and high end ... Each one will be suited to a persons needs. Without lossing games , or being forced to buy new games. The likely hood is that next year , the Xbox one will get re branded as simply Xbox , all dics will ship as Xbox ( no one on the box ) , and will run on any device you have. The machine will be able to tell what settings you have , and allow for 4K , 3D , VR of HD the developers will pick what they put in their games without worrying about making ports for other consoles.

Basically Xbox is re branding and reaching out to more people , Xbox live is the center for this and will connect all users on any device from PC gaming to Xbox one , Xbox one s and tablets and mobile

You will be in control of when you upgraded and hep you play not the manufacturing company

http://time.com/4369910/xbo...

That should explain it

Underworld3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

Revealing both at the same time just sucked a lot of the spotlight and excitement away from the Slim and could possibly hurt its sales. They revealed Scorpio too soon. Should have revealed it at next year's E3. I thought the Slim looked nice but I wouldn't even bother now.

Software_Lover3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

There is no silence.

Xbox One s is a smaller version of the Xbox One with HDR and 4k disc playback.

Scorpio is a more powerful Xbox Hardware that will play the same games and will release holiday 2017.

WTF is there more to understand?

Sunny_D3020d ago

Idk like the actual look of the hardware and an entire spec sheet and maybe some games to showcase its power? Better than some video of random people telling us "this thing is a monster!"

343_Guilty_Spark3020d ago

So the Neo will cannibalize PS4 sales....dumb article.

HallowedSoul13020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

if it releases 4-4.5 teraflops better than the original ps4 it just might if it actually is only 2 times better instead of 5 than no it wouldnt(tbh actually even at 2 times better there's a chance it could). your analogy is flawed because as of right now ps4 neo is in the position to only be 2 times better than original ps4 whereas the scorpio is in the position to be 5 times better, which is almost a two gen gap lol. why would any gamer support a console thats 5 times inferior for measly savings of a few hundred bucks. lets get logical here guys if the scorpio really does release with 6 teraflops and 4k gaming it will definitely cannibalize the other two sku's and i'd expect no less from an obvious next gen system. 900p gaming to 4k gaming is not an advanced console thats next gen and we all know it. with consoles you can't skip 1080p, 1440p and call it the same gen with a straight face come on now guys. lets call a spade a spade here.

JackBNimble11h ago

So don't support take 2 by buying games... pretty easy to vote with your wallet.

Profchaos1d 9h ago

They also just held a leadership vote I don't think there was any changes

Software_Lover1d 8h ago

I really don't even think CEO's should get bonuses. If I were a CEO and I made millions, I would like to think I wouldn't. Or if I had to legally, I would maybe find a way to disperse among the lower tier employees. Take my bonus and turn it into stocks to disperse out to those employees evenly.

DarXyde20h ago

That would be the way to do it. Imagine thinking a CEOs "leadership" is worth that much money while the talent makes the product.

Insanity.

FinalFantasyFanatic17h ago

I remember when I started working, my department manager used to gift us stuff each year, one year I got a bottle of Scotch, another it was a small basket of treats... But that was also a lot less money than what we're talking about here.

It would be ideal if the CEO could gift a bonus to everyone under them.

thorstein11h ago

Monetary company bonuses (often referred to as Christmas bonuses) were astoundingly common.

The entire premise of Christmas Vacation was set around Clark's bonus.

MrDead1d 7h ago

CEO's work for shareholders and are shareholders they also rely on share price to receive their multimillion dollar paydays and they will happily fire thousands to protect shares. CEO's are there to extract the most value out of a company and give it to the wealthy few.

redknight801d 7h ago

That is so god damn fucked up!! Unfortunately...I know damn well I will be still buying their games but shit like this should seriously have some sort of repercussion of some sort. 550 people get their lives totally up-ended and the leadership get a bonus on top of an already high salary. 25M could set those 550 people up with an annual salary each of $45,000. Depending on where you live, that is a very livable salary even...

Serious Questions Must Be Asked About PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst After New Concord Report

"It took one trailer for your average Joe Shmoe gamer to know the fate of Concord. Meanwhile, Hulst was at the helm of its development thinking it was about to be "the future of PlayStation." The level of disconnect is tremendous. This isn't just a catastrophically expensive mistake from Hulst, it is an embarrassing one that raises serious questions about whether he is fit for the role he had, let alone the role has has been promoted to. Hulst and co. get paid untold millions to make the exact calls that just cost Sony half-a-billion dollars when they could have gotten a better counsel from the YouTube comments section. Suffice to say, Hulst and any other PlayStation leadership involved in this disaster have serious questions to answer.

I wonder if the author bought up a load of physical copies and themed controllers in advance of the game being pulled, seen as they have such foresight.

Notellin1d 12h ago

Everyone knew from the first trailer and if not definitely the beta that this game was dead on arrival.

Probably the most easily predicted flop in media history given it's horrendous reception. People wouldn't even try the free beta.

Cacabunga1d 4h ago

Hat is obviously way too big for him..
If i were him id step down..

We want Yoshida san back to get those WW back on track.

VenomUK19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

It’s 100% fair and right to examine Herman Hulst’s judgement, his capability and therefore his suitability to hold the title of CEO.

What happened with Concord? Did it have performance milestones that were missed? It seemed like it was half-baked, Acton and shooting and not much else so did Hulst push ǐt through being so basic because it was his baby? It makes you wonder what games are being greenlit and which ideas are being stopped.

FinalFantasyFanatic17h ago

@VenomUK,
It just makes me think of all the games we could have had instead of Concord, I know Sony wasn't interested in allowing a remaster/port/sequel to Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts, or Japan studios to create a new Patapon game, or a Gravity Rush/Ape Escape sequel. I hate to think what games died for this failure to exist.

FinalFantasyFanatic1d 8h ago

The trailer did not look great, the demo just confirmed people's suspicions, I had no interest in the game.

MrBaskerville16h ago

Probably should have shown that trailer the year before. Instead of a 5 second teaser that revealed nothing.

A bit exaggerative. Half a billion? First we went from 200 million, then 400 million, and now its 500 million? In 3 days some blogger is going to claim Concord cost 700 million!

Yes, the game was clearly not going to succeed, nearly everyone knew this in advance, but if Hulst learns his lesson, and focuses on quality single player adventures (additional multiplayer modes are fine too!), then we're okay. If he doesn't learn, then he needs to get the boot.

This is a make-or-break moment for us to believe in him, don't screw it up. The rumored upcoming State of Play with some big announcements should help bring things back in order. I hope.

SimpleDad1d 15h ago

So basically what you're saying is... wait for E3 for new single player games that will magically appear from Sony.
Herman will, from now on, listen to gamers by releasing Fairgames, Marathon and Horizon gaas.

Crows9023h ago

Or maybe until their actual devs release their next games

Sonic18811d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

The rumor State of Play will probably just be remasters of old games and more live service games. There's a disconnect between Herman Hulst and the Playstation fans. I'll be surprised if Hulst ain't fired by next year

kindi_boy1d 10h ago

Hulst is doing his job.

-Foxtrot1d 8h ago

I doubt they'd fire him, they'd just say there's "changes in management" or "internal restructuring"

Like Jim Ryan and his "early retirement"

Notellin1d 12h ago

Is it really that difficult to understand? Don't be a bootlicker for Sony leadership.

FinalFantasyFanatic1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

Who knows, they literally grossed 1 Mil, that's nuts, who knows how much was spent on the game, media and merch for it, marketing, refunding the game for customers... It's going to be bad, costings wise. I honestly can't see where all the development time and money went into this game.

@SimpleDad,
Even if he did change direction, we're not going to see the effects of that for years, possibly 3 to 4 years if anything changed, but I'm not feeling confident.

DarXyde1d 8h ago

I don't know, mate.

This is more than, say, an oversight or misstep. Given the budget and life of this game, it's pretty much kiss-of-death worthy (or very close).

They need to move away from the GaaS stuff, but it remains to be seen if they will.

Chocoburger1d 4h ago

If we blame Hulst for Concord, then we can also thank Hulst for Astro Bot. Its only fair that it has to go both ways.
Let's just see what happens next instead of just demanding that he be fired after only 6 months. Jim Ryan started the GAAS initiative, and its going to take time (literally 1 - 3 years) for things to turn around, that's just how the industry is these days.

DarXyde22h ago

Chocoburger,

You're right about that. No disagreement there. I'm not saying I'm not willing to give the guy a chance. He hasn't been in this position long at all.

What I am saying is this was an extraordinary blunder. It's good that Astro Bot succeeded and this failed because it gets the gears turning to figure out what people want.

If it was me, I'd just sell off their live service studios and do what they're good at.

Morales202221h ago(Edited 21h ago)

"The rumored upcoming State of Play with some big announcements should help bring things back in order. I hope."
You mean the one in which they would announce remasters and more remasters?! No, thanks.

MrBaskerville16h ago

I doubt there will be anything notable from first party. They usually reveal shortly before release and I doubt they have anything before spring next year. So if they reveal something, it will probably be in februarys state of play. And more by summer.

DarXyde8h ago

In fairness, they did say not to expect anything big dropping before March.

Even so, announcements heading into the holiday season to entice people to get on the PlayStation bandwagon is a good idea. Console this winter, followed by some games to hammer at your tax refund early next year.

crazyCoconuts1d 8h ago

Didn't he get the job in the midst of the live service strategy? He may still suck, but you'd think it would take about 4 years to see the fruits of new leadership based on how long game development takes...

ravens521d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

Colin said it on sacred symbols. Concord was "Herman Hulst baby apparently". Which he was talking about with someone from the Concord team. He had a hand in this.

Michiel19891d 3h ago

yeah people think he can just magically turn everything around when he was put in an awful spot.

@ravens thats called marketing, is he supposed to say: "nah it's kinda meh, not really interested in playing"? And it's apparently working because you guys believe every single word that comes out of their mouth, PR or not.

porkChop1d ago

He's been the head of PlayStation Studios, overseeing all game development and all acquisitions, for the last 5 years. It's not like he was some outsider that just joined PlayStation 3 months ago. Yes, Jim Ryan was the guy at the top. But it would be very naive to think that Herman Hulst wasn't also an integral part of all this.

And if it takes 4 years to see the fruits of new leadership then consider that Hulst became the head of PlayStation Studios 5 years ago. Everything we've seen over the past year would be the fruits of his leadership starting to kick in, no?

Rimeskeem1d 15h ago

Wasn't this game in development way before Hulst became an exec?

Man fanboys really are so pathetic aren’t they and to think i was once a PS fanboy. So embarrassing.

Yes this game was in development for 8 years and then it was picked up by Sony half way through when the moron brothers were put in charge Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst. They put money in this thing believing it was the FUTURE of Playstation.. a fucking live service game.. also closing Japanese studios at the same time. Meanwhile one of their Japanese studios just delivered one of the most critically acclaimed and best PS games ever with just 65 people and three years of development.

DO YOU GET IT NOW YOU IDIOTS

DarXyde7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

This comment isn't cringe or immature at all.

We online are not really what you'd call "normies". We really are more dug in than your average gamer. In knowledge and awareness of the industry.

We're also not a monolith. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone likes Call of Duty. People are super vocal about how it's stale, yet it sells every year without fail.

Maybe Hulst and Ryan simply aren't terminally online and realize the internet doesn't exactly translate into public reception?

Perhaps those defending PlayStation leadership here don't feel the same way you or I might about how the ship has been steered this generation?

You're not the only one who reads silly nonsense from fellow fans (if you will call their comments silly nonsense). If it bothers you that much—to the point that you come out with...this—it might be time to hit some random keys when you change your password, mate. For your own sake, it is nowhere near that deep.

CS71d 10h ago

Good lord. The Sony defending is ridiculous at this point. People need to realize that defending them is what LEADS to Concord type failures. We NEED to call out stuff like the live service push, stupid PS5 Pro price and bare bones PS5 exclusive line up.

The same stupid defense arguments were made when the reports came out that Sony was doing live service instead of a strong push back from fans and here we are in the thick of it.

The point of the article is the Hulst should have taken one look at the steaming pile of trash and said hell no and moved on, like millions of fans obviously did.

Not pour hundreds of millions into its completion (which could have gone to better PS5 single player exclusives like Astro Bot) or even into a better multiplayer IP like SOCOM, Warhawk, Killzone etc.

He didn't and that's a problem. Playstation leadership is out of touch.

(And please no one reply and say Xbox, they're dead and this point and not even worth comparing to)

Michiel19891d 3h ago

Saying that it's not (only) Hermen Hulst who is at fault is not defending sony, it's observing the timeline and using common sense. Playstation's whole strategy with the live service was just a failure, they could maybe have done 1 besides helldivers, but there is no reason to make a scapegoat out of this guy for things when they were greenlit, he could do nothing about.

JackBNimble1d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

Ya, this is my exact question. The game was in development for 8 years, what role does Hulst actually have in this?

If anything Jim Ryan was at the helm for a much longer period of time while this game was under development and Jim was the one originally pushing gass.

I don't know anything about this Hulst guy, but is he really the one accountable or just the fall guy?
And isn't there a second sony CEO? I thought there were 2 running the show this time around?

MrBaskerville15h ago

But wasn't he responsible for the game divisions or something, before becoming CEO? Ryan is probably the one to blame though, he must have been responsible for the gaas pivot that has stalled things.

Palworld maker vows to fight Nintendo lawsuit on behalf of fans and indie developers

Palworld developer Pocketpair has responded to this morning's dramatic decision by Nintendo to file a patent infringement.

eurogamer.net
GotGame8183d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Palworld is better, but Nintendo has$$$$ They can fight it all they want, but will absolutely lose. It is a blatant Pokemon rip off. I do wish them luck though.

RedDevils1d 16h ago

Go check Dragon Quest you would know where Pokemon got their ideas from.

MeteorPanda1d 16h ago

The character design is NOT the issue here. Pokemon patented bullsht. You can patent "Throwing an item to capture a virtual character and another action to release an item that releases a combat character onto virtual world" but my god that is vague as fuck and shouldnt hold in any court...and the kicker? it was patented AFTER palworld was made.

If this lawsuit goes through that is literally going to work on every single monster capture game,

Lionsguard1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

Like the other guy said, this has nothing to do with any of the designs. This is Nintendo patent trolling. It's like Rockstar suing another game if they have a guy opening the car door and yanking them out to steal the car because that's why you do in GTA so therefore that game is infringing on GTA's "patent". And that's the reason why Pocketpair is fighting this because if they lose this opens the doors to MORE lawsuits of this kind.

Profchaos1d 20h ago

Weren't the wire models used in palworld ripped out of Pokemon in the end?

porkChop1d 19h ago

No they weren't. That was proven false. And, again since people don't seem to understand, this is not a copyright lawsuit or about stolen content/assets/designs/etc. It's a patent lawsuit. So far all the possible patents I've seen were filed by Nintendo 4 months *after* Palworld released.

Profchaos1d 17h ago

Then I have no clue what this is about specifically

--Onilink--1d 17h ago

The catching mechanic patent was filed even before Arceus was released, I dont know which ones you have been watching because all the ones I’ve seen were before Palword came out
(Though not all have been approved in the US yet, just in Japan)

porkChop1d 17h ago

The patent for the catching mechanic was filed July 2024 and granted August 2024. It was filed on top of a separate, "parent" patent that had been filed in 2021. Nintendo filed new patents and had them expedited just so they could sue Pocket Pair/Palworld.

MeteorPanda1d 16h ago

it's so dumb. if that patent holds any water in court - any monster capture game is done and gone. cnts.

NotoriousWhiz1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Source that says it was filed in July? I couldn't find it. And everything I can find states that it typically takes around a year or more for patents to be approved.

On behalf of their money seems like the biggest reason

Kneetos1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

People want Nintendo to lose as a big middle finger to the company, but if Nintendo wins then they set a precedent for others to follow which could be bad for Nintendo themselves if they end up infringing on a patent owned by someone else

The one I'm reminded of is, a few years ago Sony patented something to do with AI controlling a characters moments in a game to "help get past difficult or grindy parts" of a game

Mario kart 8 deluxe had a the auto acceleration and auto steering technology implemented, so potentially if that came back for mario kart 9 could possibly open the door for Sony to sue them if it's close enough
