Xbox Chief Phil Spencer Talks Project Scorpio, VR, and Those Magical 6 Teraflops

Xbox's top guy takes some time at E3 to go over Microsoft's plans for more and better console experiences, and how Project Scorpio will bring VR to Xbox.

XMarkstheSpot2872d ago

This is what I like to hear. I know when I get my hands on the beast ill have all my X1 games and 360 games to be able to play on it along with Scorpio built games, Which makes sense cause who wants to go back to a library of Zero on that system and then need your old console to play games you all ready own when you could sell it and invest in a new console because all your purchases and etc move along with the console, cause whatever come after Scorpio ill be able to play X1, 360, Scorpio games on that new system, I like. And hopfully maybe some OG Xbox games with Achievements if were lucky ^.*

Theoretical 6 teraflops. When something is supposedly 18 months away and they don't even show it then it's called a concept. Funny how much microsoft is bragging about power on a system that's basically releasing in 2018, or 1 month from 2018.

So Microsoft is bragging about power but for the next 18 months they will STILL have the weaker console, especially considering that Neo will release long before Scorpio.

So power is so important to Microsoft now, but only in 18 months...until then power is unimportant? Hmmm? So xbox fans are all about specs except when it comes to the actual console they are CURRENTLY playing. I love how Microsoft sells ppl on pipe dreams "down the road". Secret sauce, cloud, esram.

jessionpc2872d ago

What will that be? 4 years of being the bitch? Just to get topped by Neo in the end? lol.

Either way though, Phil SHOULD talk about how they're effectively keeping an 8gb of ram bottlenecked console generation alive into the mid 2020's.

Thanks Microsoft, I love popins. BTW you suck.

slavish02872d ago

You really got some sand in your vagina

krypt19832872d ago

Lmao really don't know what to say to this ignorant cancer. Mad cause the scorpio is going to flop the neother all over town specs was the bragging point when ps4 launched now it's a moot point to sony fans typical, the xb1 was oringally stronger then the ps4 until that hacked leaked the development kit and specs then Sony added power so you can miss everybody with that shit, I guarantee you there will never be a stronger console then Microsofts from here on out check mate. Microsoft ain't even competing with Sony no more after them launching xbl Play anywhere Sony is in the rear view can't wait to play gears 4 on my scorpio why my friends play with me on there Mac books ...

IamTylerDurden12872d ago (Edited 2872d ago )

Both PlayStation and xbox will be backwards compatible from here on out bc of the x86 architecture. Neo will play PS4 games and PS5 will play PS4 and Neo games ect. Welcome to the glory of pc architecture.

Ppl fail to realize while Microsoft looks at Scorpio as their next gen console Sony looks at Neo as their PS4 slim. Neo will launch long before Scorpio and soon after Scorpio launches Sony will release PS5 which will obviously blow Scorpio out of the water. So, theoretically Microsoft will have the most powerful console...for about a year. By the time exclusive Scorpio games even come out PS5 will be launching with a full launch lineup. Tell me i'm wrong.

seanpitt232872d ago

If the Ps4 neo comes this year which is very doubtful I couldn't see Sony releasing the ps5 that soon after the neo. Neo will come our Q4 16/Q1 17 Sony will wait at least 3 years for the release of ps5 so my prediction would be holiday 2020 that 2/3 years after the Scorpio.

dms52232872d ago

So let me get this straight. Microsoft releases a statement that says what the minimum performance would be for the Scorpio and you say prove it! (If they somehow did not meet this statement it would be very embarrassing for them).

But then you turn around and say the PS5 which has not been announced by Sony on any stage and you say it will be more powerful but have no facts from the manufacturer whatsoever. To that I say "prove it!"

So, using your logic, the PS5 is a pipe dream until Sony actually announces anything. (Microsoft has announced something)

PutridPlop2872d ago (Edited 2872d ago )

Didn't the president of Sony say when asked if there would be a PS5 that he he wasn't sure? I swear I read that somewhere. Oh, and isn't the Scorpio going to be upgradeable, backward/forward compatible? Thought I read that somewhere too.

RiseofScorpio2872d ago

This guy again. Why would they release another console 2 years after the Neo?

game4funz2872d ago

If that happens I'm. Sorry but people should stop buying consoles... They're taking advantage of everyones bstupidity with power and resolution

It's just like I said yesterday. When I got seriously downvoted. VR games are exclusive to Scorpio while the reest will play on any Xbox One hardware, including Scorpio.

Herbalistic2872d ago (Edited 2872d ago )

Yep,being as standard Xbox One units aren't strong enough to support PC VR headsets.

ThePope2872d ago

The thing is neither consoles are strong enough.

remixx1162872d ago

Yet one has a compatible vr headset....

TheCommentator2872d ago

XB1 generally runs at 900p with 1.3 tf. Scorpio is over 4.5 times more powerful than XB1 but 4K is only 4 times as many pixels. AMD has said in interviews before that 4K doesn't require 4x performance because other elements of rendering are reduced as resolution increases. So...

Of course Scorpio will be 4k native. OTOH, PS Neo cannot be expected to take a 1080p image and upgrade it to native 4K with only an estimated 2.5x more power.

Microsoft showed their hand too early with scorpio.

dms52232872d ago

Who's to say it might not get more powerful? I doubt it would change but what they announced could be minimum performance specs.

NeoGamer2322872d ago

And why is that?

If they let Sony announce the specs for Neo first, the conversation would've been, "How can Scorpio beat that", or "MS waited and announced something better as a reaction to Neo".

This way the conversation puts MS in the drivers seat. Essentially, daring Sony to do better. MS even boldly stated that it would be the most powerful console when released.

This way MS is showing confidence in the product they are delivering.

If they waited until after Neo to do this it shows weakness.

And by their statements on VR they are daring Sony to do better with Sony VR as well. Essentially calling it out and calling it inadequate to what gamers really want.

I like that MS held off on VR because I really don't think current consoles are truly able to deliver a top notch VR experience yet. And I like that they are delivering a console that will be truly capable of 4k and VR. But at the same time I think we are early in VR. First the price has to drop to $199 for a high end headset and secondly it has to be about the 3rd or 4th generation before I will pick it up. I truly believe in the immersion of VR, but I think this year's VR offerings will be a disappointment in comparison to 3-5 years from now.

Embracer CEO demonstrates a masterclass in mental gymnastics in latest interview.

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss5d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg3d ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast5d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.

shining force.

but indont see that happening unfortunately.
