Local Multiplayer, is it needed?

I remember a few years back my dad calling me and my brothers for what he dubbed “Team Games” This was his word for 4 way split- screen multplayer, and to be honest, it was the closest we got to a proper conversation. For the next hour and a half; the air in our games room would be punctured with shouts of “SCREEN CHEATER”, the poor X-Box 360 kiling itself in the corner and my truimphant shouts as I won yet again. Back then I could not give a damn about online, it could never beat the entertainment and chaos of local multiplayer. So when yet another game is released without splt-screen, it understandably saddens me.

For me, I would say yes.

I was pretty disappointed when Halo 5 did not have split-screen. My friends and I always play through the Halo campaigns and LAN multiplayer. I know a lot more people play online now and I admit is certainly more convenient but if its possible without compromising anything else, I don't see why not.

Bottom line its obviously NOT "NEEDED" considering the thriving of the industry. Is it very missed and be greatly appreciated when ever it's rarely implemented? ABSOLUTELY!!!
Sadly this is a feature that has been largely taken for granted by the masses during the rise of online gaming and made it easy for this industry to slyly phase this out.
Making a major purchase never goes without a thought of what my friends are also playing. So I'm an avid user of local multi when I can or even local competitive, Party fighters are one of if not my fav genre I greatly miss it and would love it if I could get down on some four player Overwatch of some nature simply it feels like the natural evolution of "Golden Dark Splitters" back when it wasn't about Ranks and Prestige before when games were played to have fun playing them with your friends at most to unlock characters. Now don't get me wrong I'm not a nostalgic person and I'm all for games moving on and forward but when certain things are forgotten and even ignored It can't help but to be missed. I just hope people continue to be vocal about this and show action that they want these features to return in some fashion.

For me, it's like backwards compatibility: I want it for absolutely no reason.

I rarely ever use split screen, and when I do, I don't like it. In Star Wars: Battlefront, my friends and I would get so frustrated trying to perform together with only half the screen. It didn't work for us.

I love local multiplayer, but split screen specifically is tough for me to get behind, unless if's a game that works with it. The lego games, for example, are chill enough that you don't need the entire screen to feel comfortable.

I'm looking forward to seeing how VR affects local multi in the future!

You either played SC on a screen less than 50 inches or you are a millennial. Either way I grew up on SC and its the best couch fun you could ever had. I remember playing Goldeneye with my friends on the N64 in 4 way SC on a 14inch CRT TV for hours and hours on end with no problems.

Me and a friend spend every Friday night on Rocket League, whooping arse because we can communicate face to face.

People today are never satisfied.

Keep making SC games and I'll keep buying them!

Then again split screen is kind of an acquired taste, some people struggle with splitscreen. It took me a while to get used to it, but I am glad I did.

It would be nice, as i am sure Dads who have young kids would like to do some multiplayer with their kids and not have to buy a whole new system or only play fighting games.

It's not "needed" per-se, especially given that newer generations of gamers that come in won't be expecting to have split-screen as - frankly - it isn't available to them, and online gaming has taken over. But, (and I'm in this group), it would very much be appreciated for older gamers/those who HAVE experienced split-screen gaming before the rise of online gaming (heck I'm only in my early 20's and I love split-screen - if mainly for gaming nights)! Otherwise gaming nights with some friends over, good food (takeaway), and some drinks will never be the same! D:

For me personally I'd say yes. I remember playing back in the day on a 19 inch tv playing four player split-screen. Mind you this is early 90s, but man that was fun. It was a pain playing on a screen less than 5 inches, but playing with three other buddies was a blast. Back then no one had a tv bigger than that size, yet today the smallest you find people with is a 42 inch.

It always amazes me how you'll hear people talk about today saying they'd never want to play on a screen less than 50 inches and to me my greatest memories were when l was playing on the 19 inch tv. There really was nothing better than Playing Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Halo, Mario Kart or Starfox with three other pals.

These days l don't get to see my brother as much as when we both were kids because we both live in different states and I'm happy l can still play games with him online, but there is no greater time than when we go to each other's house and play the same game together. There really is nothing better than being able to play with someone in the same room and online gaming just doesn't give you that same immersion as playing with someone on the same couch.

I just wish more developers would make split-screen gaming, because I'd enjoy being able to play games with my kids, letting them have as great of memories as l did too. So l just hope split-screen gaming will return in the future.

Season Passes definitely split the community up.

I find with BF1 that because the game modes were split into different sections of the DLC, the players would be spread across this.

If they allow for all DLC to be free added content (like Titanfall 2) then we would be able to play all maps and modes as a collective community.

Ya and with nothing holding back people from purchasing those titles, community's will grow. It's win win tbh. It's not like EA are hurting for those few extra dollars.
