Do We Really Need a PlayStation 4 Neo or Xbox 1.5 Scorpio?

Concerning the upgrade, I strongly feel that anything that isn't defined as the "next generation" won't be worth the money, especially since games won't be developed that might push Neo's and Scorpio's limits due to having to also develop for vanilla PS4 and X1 and also, presumably, having to put them on the same disk. However, it might be worth the money for those who want slightly sharper graphics, higher frame rates, and less load times than the console they currently have... but, once again I feel, it will marginally be worth the money.

Yeah... Yes and no... There's a huge misconception about PC gamers and having the latest and greatest hardware. Only about 1% of PC gamers have 4K monitors, high end graphics cards to attain 60+fps, and so on... The rest of us aren't that well to do, in the money department. I had my GTX 680 until it burned out earlier this year. And that's the only reason why I upgraded. Otherwise, I would have waited about 2 more years before upgrading. Which is actually the average lifespan of a console... that is, until now where consoles are also doing incremental upgrades.

Well, this generation has been all about Res/FPS and all that and gamers disappointed by the PS4/XB1 specs, so I think gamers want the PS4 NEO/Scorpio without realizing it.

I think you are right but for me personally I was never disappointed with my Xbox one only my ps4 disappointed me not because of its performance but because of the noise, it is like having a hairdryer sitting next to me. I first thought it was defective but after a bit of online research I found out it was normal and then it was confirmed when I visited my friend in a different country and his was exactly the same, as soon as you start online multi-player you would think your ps4 is getting ready for take off.

That doesn't confirm anything. 2 personal anecdotes doesn't mean All PS4 sound like that. I was actually surprised when my Ps4 still stayed quiet when I was playing U4 since it's a very demanding game. I haven't even cleaned the fan yet since I bought it 1 and half years ago. But, now that there is no warranty I'm going to open it up and start cleaning it.

My launch PS4 is loud and has issues like the annoying coil whining, disks ejecting. I got the C chassis and everything was gone it's very quiet. PS4 has been a big let down to me, it's riddled with issues and seems to get worse in updates. One big issue was slow downloads which got fixed then in the last update it broke it again, now I can't download anything while playing Spotify or playing a game. Before I could play Spotify while playing a game and the downloads would still be going quite fast.. Now they go about 100kb-400kb if I play or use anything. I noticed this in the beta and I knew they wouldn't fix it. I haven't been on my PS4 in nearly 2 months it just annoys me every time I use it something always isn't working properly. I've gone back to PS3 I just enjoy it a lot more.

I never have slow downloads from PSN, and I didn't last gen either. I have 250-300mbps service and have my consoles wired in on 1gb Ethernet. It took about 15 minutes to download and install a 5gb update a few days ago.

The answer to this for me has to be no. I bought the Xbox one day one then I had to spend two years trying to convince my nearest and dearest to let me buy a ps4 ( which she threatened to throw out the window if I took one the house ), I now own both consoles but it would be extremely difficult for me to justify buying another Xbox even though I must have the new Xbox Scorpio. So for my blood pressure and the sanity of my wife I really must say no. For future reference if anyone feels the need to give away a free Xbox Scorpio I can provide a loving and caring home : )

One approach I've taken in the past is to save double for the price of the unnecessary toy/gadget/expense that I want to spend a good chunk of money on for myself to allow my wife to blow money on something she enjoys. For example, if I wanted to spend ~$500 on a game console that I obviously don't "need," I will expect my wife to spend $500 on something she wants. I have surprised her and spent a sh**-load on concert tickets for her and her friends to see a concert and, amazingly, didn't have any push back buying tickets to a game that I wanted to attend. If you want to drop a few hundred on a game system, try to save up the money to allow her to buy something she wants, too.

Yeah you can tell alot of those people are either young or haven't been in a serious relationship before. I'm the sole income earner in my household as my wife is a stay at home mum to our 4 kids. I still talk to her whenever I want to buy something that would be considered "unnecessary" and she does the same thing with me. I generally pre order consoles and games and pay them off bit by bit so we don't take a big hit from a single fortnightly pay. Relationships are 2 way. I'd be pissed if I came home to find my wife had spent $400 on something without discussing it with me first.

No...the answer is no. The point of consoles is to have a fairly secure investment that potentially has at least a 4 year life span. Breaking that trust with consumers will likely lead to the death of the console industry in the long run. Some games take over 2 to three years to produce so shortening the life cycle of the console could really never benefit the industry as a whole. Sales will likely drop dramatically if everyone thinks a 1.5 will release a few years later.

Clearly it's my opinion but halving the life span of a relevant console would probably do nothing but harm even if they all play the same games.

Except that they will play the same games. Assuming its gonna be a 3 year cycle. You can get an Xbox 4 in 2017 and choose to skip the Xbox 5 2020 to get Xbox 6 2023 later. That's 6 years apart which is a normal console cycle. they will play the same games you'll just be missing on the upgraded graphics. But you'll see a bigger jump in performance.

Nobody buys a new phone EVERY year. Most just buy the latest every 2-3 years.

you missed the point though...I have always been an early adopter. I buy at launch , but if I know there will be a 1.5 in two or three year I will hold off and wait. Which is why this is a problem. It will lead to a far smaller install base, which in turn leads to less games long term, and less support, and it just becomes a complete mess

Speaking literally, we never NEED these consoles. But I've mulled it over and think it's probably for the best to release revised hardware.

I think they all realized that the performance gap relative to PC is pretty bad. It was never this bad. It's the result of taking a generational leap too late when the last generation was so long. Instead, they should've taken two generational leaps to compensate.

Then you've got the concerns of smartphones being in a position to outperform consoles in a few years. I feel like this is the way it had to be in order to restore some balance to the natural order.

Whether the new hardware succeeds or not is up to us consumers. But if you want VR on consoles and have an enjoyable experience, it might be necessary.

The Xbox brand needs and upgrade to escape the stigma of being the weaker console. The original Xbox blew the doors off the PS2. The Xbox 360 also performed better than the PS3, despite Sony's claims on paper of it being "superior." The PS3 produced nothing but inferior multiplats and terrible online gameplay, leaving the 360 to dominate both graphically and in online gameplay. This gen the PS4 is clearly on top, but that won't last for long, the Xbox Scorpio is significantly more powerful than both the PS4 and the PS4K. The PS4 continues to struggle with online gameplay. They just can't get their act together when it comes to stable, quality online gaming. Maybe the PS4K with it's additional power will help resolve this problem?

Either way, this whole gamble is VERY risky and could potentially alienate consumers and push more of them towards PC.

A few comments:

1. Xbox was indeed more powerful than PS2. Like it wasn't even comparable. Be that as it may, it didn't matter. The very widely accepted conclusion is PS2 was a better investment and with good reason. MANY more exclusives that were very fun, more variety in titles, etc.

2. Xbox 360 multiplatform titles outperformed PS3 on several occasions thanks to its simpler architecture and having a year to become familiar with it. PS3 also had trouble with open world games, but games made with PS3 as the lead or exclusives really showed what it could do.

3. Scorpio RUMORED specs exceed Neo RUMORED specs. That's not even something we can validate. But even then, that would likely change nothing. Graphics don't really dictate a console's success (both are doing fine, actually). Since Sony isn't talking about Neo at E3, they could easily revise the rumored specs to something more powerful when they do reveal it and push back release if necessary. After all, even the release date is a rumor. I doubt they will, especially since power doesn't indicate much. And I'm sure PS4 isn't outselling Xbox One now because of power differences. It's the games, especially with the negligible differences now. Even further, you're really better off just investing in a PC instead of Scorpio. Neo can get away with existing thanks to more exclusive titles on PlayStation, but Microsoft wants to integrate W10 as their actual platform, so with a PC, you're very likely to miss nothing on Xbox. And if you're PC is up to snuff, it'll outperform Scorpio and Neo anyway.

4. Online gameplay trouble? That sounds like a user error. I haven't had any issues with online gaming since, what, a year ago? Is your internet set up correctly?

In reality, both Windows 10 and Xbox are MS platforms. Microsoft has created a very large eco system for developers, and created tremendous incentive for them to produce games for their combined platform.

And where did I suggest PSN was better than Xbox Live? I'm saying any connection issues you're having now can likely be attributed to you. I am a multiplatform gamer. I haven't had Xbox Live since X360, but I'm pretty sure it's better than PSN. Microsoft has always had the advantage with connectivity and I doubt that changes. Just as Sony has a better clue of what they're doing with hardware. But even with that said, I've had literally no problems with PSN in quite some time. Heck, you talk about not even being comparable, yet the network potentially supports millions of PS3s and however many Vitas FOR FREE on top of however many million PS4s. And if you take the network saboteurs' word for it, the security on one of the networks was an absolute joke. I'll give you a hint, they weren't talking about PlayStation.

Let me be clear: I'd like all of the consoles to do well. It'll force each others' hands to keep content coming and the industry stays strong. There are no personal benefits to me where I want Xbox One Scorpio to do poorly. Sadly, I don't care enough to be that emotionally invested. But I will state facts and it's actually difficult, at least in my opinion and perhaps even to well informed consumers, to justify buying an Xbox One Scorpio if you already own a current model. Multiplatform titles are one thing and that's fine, but even the console exclusive titles are hard to justify with PC versions that'll run better than even a high end Xbox. Neo is potentially a hard sell as well since it allegedly won't have any exclusive games, but as far as consoles go, Neo still makes more sense. At least if you go PC, you can get all multiplatform titles for it and have options with VR. Assuming the Oculus rumors are true, you can still choose Vive on PC and, possibly, PSVR in the future. The PC/Xbox argument is not a fanboy fallacy and is totally a valid criticism.

I'm not saying Xbox One is a waste of money. I think it's cool, but it does make me interested in buying a sea worthy PC to cut out any need to buy an upgraded box or even the next Xbox console. I'm saying buying an upgraded Xbox One after buying a stock Xbox One makes little sense to me when there's PC that allows for mods, more exclusives, more power, and definitive multiplatform titles where you can adjust play settings to prioritize visuals or frame rate. It absolutely has a few legs up on PlayStation too. I'd never deny that and I pride myself in looking at these things objectively. But again, the exclusives make it and even a Nintendo console worth owning. They don't have to be primary platforms. Heck, I'd encourage everyone with a gaming PC to buy their multiplatform titles for that (unless it's like Batman: Arkham Knight). An upgraded Xbox? Tough sell to old consumers, if you ask me, but maybe that's not their aim.

Sony doesn't have any choice but to upgrade their PS4 to Neo due to the fact that they're also promoting the PSVR which requires a little bit more processing power. So they've decided to upgrade not only the GPU but also up the clockspeed of the CPU to catch up with the growing technology and requirements of VR market.

I believe Sony and Microsoft are trying too bring a more PC like experience but still keep the benefits of a console....Obviously they are doing it for different reasons. Sony is trying to compete at a higher level perhaps even deciding to go after some of the PC market. Microsoft is obviously trying to unify the Xbox and PC market. Rumors running around that Microsoft is trying to create a way where Developers create for both Xbox and PC and consumers only have to buy one copy to play on both platforms. Smart move if Microsoft pulls it off. Just that consumer friendly option alone would be enough for people to choose Xbox over its competitors and it doesn't require a hardware upgrade... Being able to use community PC mods is another good idea. Perhaps even trying to make nodding mainstream could prolong the life of a game as well as the console it was designed..... I have not waited 7 to 10 years to upgrade multiple PCs in my home and I wouldn't mind having that option for my console as long as Sony and Microsoft control the minimum specs Game Developers run a game on ....it shouldn't be a problem. Also rumors suggest that Microsoft and Sony will be allowing some control of graphic options in the game which will allow consumers to take some control over which graphic options are more important to them.....

The key common factor that unifies what Microsoft and Sony are trying to accomplish even if it is different from each other can be described in one phrase "Consumer Choice"

That my gaming friends is a very great accomplishment and a huge leap forward for console market.... even if you don't exactly agree with the options available.... If Console makers feel Consumer choice makes them money then more options will come in the future and those options may be a benefit too you....

Consumer Choice has to start somewhere and better hardware choices is not a bad place to start

I'm 44 and been there through every iteration since Atari 2600. Regardless of how incredibly long the Xbox 360/PS3 had been out, I wasn't really chomping at the bit for a new generation. Then for good reason, I was not terribly blown away by Xbox One or PS4. I own them both, but I'm no more taken by them than my Wii U - but to be fair I'm a Nintendo man at heart. Still it was a poor offering by both companies. However, I do believe beyond a shadow of doubt, what many of you know, it's a case of diminishing returns. The days of huge graphical leaps are pretty much gone. True Ultra HD 4K graphics, with minimum 60 fps may be one of the last true WOWs left. But we shall all see in the coming years. Virtual Reality MAY be the next true frontier.
