PS4 Neo vs. Xbox Scorpio, Which Upgrade Will Be More Powerful?

The PS4 Neo specs have been known for a while now but now it seems the new upgraded Xbox or the ‘Xbox Scorpio’ as the codename it goes by is now also set for release in 2017. Rumours point to Neo making it out before the end of they year with Microsoft’s upgrade coming in 2017. The question on people’s minds is which will be the more powerful upgrade? Well, let’s try and figure that out.

August won't reveal everything. Even if Scorpio is true, MS would not officially reveal a new Xbox that is more powerful coming in late 2017 and then look at you and say, "Buy the new slim that is launching now." They would be sabotaging their own sales.

And an inexpensive console that does 6TF? Is anyone buying this? Of course they are. The same people that thought ESRAM was the gateway to gaming heaven. Or was that Always Online? Or was it a hidden 2nd CPU? Or DX12? At what point do people exercise a modicum of reservation or skepticism?

What this amounts to, and I am laughing people cannot see it, is astroturfing designed to make gamers think twice about the Neo. In the end it really doesn't doesn't matter. Neo will launch this fall with PSVR a full year ahead of anything else. No one else ever heard the term "late to the party"?

Morganfell the newer APUs launching next year offer a lot more power than the old technology thrown into current generation consoles. If they wait until 10nm dies come on line and include the Vega and Zen+ architectures 6 teraflops would be easy and cheaper than current generation launch cost.

Between efficiencies in the architectures and the die shrink power and heat would be reduced allowing the launch of a slim model on day one. By 2018 you're looking at Titan X power requiring less power than current consoles. So smaller everything, less heat, less packaging and less plastic. That's why they continue to create because it only gets cheaper and more powerful.

I really hope these rumors just get put to rest at E3. One way or another, they're annoying and distracting. I'd rather discuss them with known facts if they exist, or let the rumor die if it doesn't.

I personally think each one will have to be significantly powerful to not only output 4k but to run a VR device extremely well. And with that said I guess you have to look at the VR devices and which one requires more for it to work well.

That would'nt be a way to truly guage which console would be more powerful. There are PC that are a lot more beefier than are required to run Oculus and Vive, but they don't necessarily have to be!

Right now Sony doesn't have to have the most powerful console, they've already gathered the marketshares as well as the mindshares. They also have something that Microsoft has a tough time competing against them with some of the best 1st party developers in the industry which translate to games.

Microsoft in my opinion aren't great at making Hardware but Sony are! Just like I don't think Sony are as adept at Software/Writing Code as Microsoft. Those things make a difference.

We can still discuss it but some people refuse to treat it as a rumor. They are running hard with it like the information came hurling out of a burning bush. I say go go gadget. And when it doesn't pan out, then what? You would think such persons would learn. We have some questionable leaked documentation on the Neo and even less substantial rumors on Scorpio but sites such as the one pandering this story are using terms like "approximately" and "estimated" as if they have seen some sort of blueprints.

I remember such stories when the rumor surfaced the PS4 would be using 4GB of DDR3. How did that pan out?

It should also be understood that Sony is soundly out in front this generation and that truism really has nothing to do with power. Less than 1% of gamers count pixels. The average gamer did not choose the PS4 over the X1 based on power. I love power discussions when we have facts. And we shouldn't ignore the way games run on any platform. But some people are already trying to preorder based on these separate rumors.

We've been discussing it for almost two months now with the Neo, and somewhat with MS, rumors, so I don't know where else the discussion has to go since all that can really be said has been said. I know when I tried discussing it before, most of anything I said was ignored as entitled or fanboyish, despite I was actually critical of it, but I'm a Sony fan....go figure.

Console wars are annoying enough, do we really need to have them over rumored specs which have absolutely no physical proof to anyone other than some journalists word?

It's rather peculiar how these rumors are flaring up when there is no real other news to report. So we have Polygon, Kotaku, and EG all reporting these unsubstantiated rumors, and Giantbomb, but everyone forgets the first three were all implicated in that media cabal that was the catalyst to start Gamergate. And no one finds these rumors suspicious in the least? I say, stop talking about it for a while, see if the sites realize no one is paying attention, then maybe they can get back to reporting news again, instead of doing some piss poor journalism and hiding behind a rumor tag.

None of these new consoles are doing any serious, if any, 4k gaming. Even my recently built $1400 PC (this is including taxes, Windows 10 pro, cables and accessories) cant even pull off all ultraultra maxed settings on RoTR at 1080p without having some massive framerate issues. I can get some very impressive performance and visuals if I don't use any AA, but its quite jaggy. But I wouldn't even dare try quadrupling my resolution to 4k, in order to run at 60fps the visuals would need to look like an SNES game.

However fully functional 4k blu Ray and media playback are a certainty. But that is hardly demanding, they just need the latest HDMI spec.

Best case scenario is a very lightweight indi title running at 4k. But please, enough with all the 4k gaming talk with these new consoles. Clearly too many around here have no idea the raw brute strength required for meaningful 4k gaming.

It actually makes more sense for Microsoft to go this route than Sony given the current position they are in. I see people saying that power wasn't or isn't the reason that PS4 is outselling the XbOne, but Sony themselves released a poll that showed Resolution, superior 3rd party games and faster hardware were the top reasons many picked PS4 over XbOne. Not sure why people are flip flopping over this issue when the bulk of 3rd party game comparisons between the two are almost always highlighting resolution and frame rates.

Well, Sony held developer conference this week. They showed infamous second son in 4k on new hardware. New gpu is over twice as fast. Every game releasing after September will have to have support for both. There are also incoming changes to PSN accounts. SDK is getting awesome update. There are no requirements regarding at what res and fps game has to run on new hardware.

Sony is going for a decent 4K player FIRST,the additional power towards games is an afterthought.
Unless it's VR related,games in general benefit from both incentives.That's Sony's strategy.
You could argue about this being progress or it being a very unfortunate reality,the fact remains that 4K

I think optimizing will only get you as far as it could go with the hardware at your disposal.
Imagine,VR and 4K coming and having the PS4's current hardware will not satisfy the developers in the long run.

anyway as for me at least i am not a fan of mid cycle upgrades or things of that sort like the Iphone and galaxy phones which i barely use to make phone calls so it wont bother me if they release a new one everyday .
but with gaming its a different story the care that a dev puts to make a game do appear when you see the final product .
with this move i could be happy if the game runs at all .

Microsoft is in a position where they just might run the run the tab and sell the hardware at a good loss. More powerful would be useful in delivering a solid VR experience and have a leg up on the competition.

That being said, it's still incredibly likely to backfire. The general consensus suggests PlayStation 4 is simply the more appealing machine with more appealing games. Purely subjective, but I'd say PlayStation exclusives are better loved. PS4 is still the platform many gamers and their friends are on. More power isn't likely to change that since it's a negligent point, as history suggests.

Microsoft dropping more powerful hardware is great for newcomers and sales suggest there's a good amount of people who haven't bought one yet. It's a smart move for those consumers. But if you bought an Xbox One followed by its revision, it's high time you invest in a PC. I just don't see what warrants that kind of purchase.

I can't even say Neo is worth it if games are still happening on standard PS4. Different strokes, but I think Neo makes more sense purely because there are a notable amount of games unavailable anywhere else.

Neither of the consoles with this spec will be able to do 4k gaming, (Triple AAA). Both will do 1080/60 without problems. This means that its all on the hands of the studios to make the best game and not on the specs.

This makes a lot of sense for Microsoft actually. They have the money to put out a more powerful console and then if they team up the Oculus to fight Sony VR. If Sony announces a machine with very different specs (presumably better), not only could they usurp competition and repeat 2013, but they could also make it slimmer and more powerful, all while basically discrediting every rumor source going forward so any leaked announcements are unlikely to be taken seriously by sources, at least for a while.

Technically, we don't know if the proposed specs of Neo are even real. Sony's failure to comment actually works heavily in their favor. You can't verify that they ever revised the specs. It's a very interesting move.

sold my Xbox one. not enough games coming out for it (and only it) most Xbox one games seem to release on PC and Xbox. either later or same time. not much looking forward for Xbox one.

PS4 overpriced and lack of games at the start of the generation but it got a little better with the price cut and going into year 2015-early 2016. and it has some more exclusives i am looking forward too that are not just coming out on PC later or sametime unlike Xbox one. just in my opinion at least.

There's really overall not much going for consoles this generation. lack of games a lot of big "triple a" releases have been huge disappointments. All the light is really on the indie games and smaller developers which for the most part are mainly making games for PC with a few indies here and there on consoles.

So in the end. Even if PC gaming is "high maintenance" and you rather just "easily plug and play" on a console. i still recommend going pc. you could buy a cheap pre-built pc just swap out the GPU for a gpu like the 750 ti and be fine for most of gaming unless of course you really want those "Big Triple A Releases" which may require you to lower settings. but honestly. big development studios haven't been bringing it this year. Watch Dogs, Fallout 4, The Division, Destiny, Star Wars Battlefront etc. all big disappointments. it's sort of changing. you get a few good games worthwhile of purchasing from these "Big name development studios" like BloodBorne, Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor etc. but that's just my opinion at least. but as i said. i think PC Gaming should be the first stop anyone too consider. Then get maybe 1 console down the line. like the Ps4 which seems to be doing better and has more exclusives but that's up to the person purchasing the console. i just don't see any reason to purchase an Xbox one unless you are just a console gamer then maybe there will be a reason but even then the PS4 has a lot more exclusives out and coming out for the console plus it is the more powerful system of the Xbox one (of course not by much). and you still will be playing at "30FPS" standard console gamers still are used too with a few exceptions like uncharted 4's multiplayer. for example.

That's not really true.

-Xbox was significantly more powerful than the PS2.

-Xbox 360 outperformed the PS3 in the vast majority of multiplat games, which are the only games you can directly compare, but some PS3 exclusives were the best looking console games of the generation, so at best we could call it a wash, although the 360 generally outperformed the PS3 in the majority of cases.

-PS4 is more powerful than XB1 by a decent amount and it generally outperforms the XB1 in multiplats and has the best looking exclusives,but the gulf between them isn't nearly as large as between the Xbox and PS2.

Nothing is guaranteed each generation. One or the other is always going to have the generally worse performing console.

yea but those items are used by the masses they run purely on supply and demand. If the 6tera flops is actually true, it would be a big treat for those who are interested in upgrading or just getting the console(That is if they have enough disposable income).

But I imagine it being the same as just buying a beefy PC since most of the games are going cross platform. There are more things that can be done on a PC so those who prefer going this path should be fine too, not missing out on anything except maybe Halo.

The main difference here is, console is more gamer friendly compared to PC because drivers, compatibilities and all
