This week, 20 years ago, Secret of Mana was released for the Super Nintendo. What has made the game so enduring? And what inspirations does it offer to contemporary developers? Die Gute Fabrik's Douglas Wilson and Gamasutra's Christian Nutt discuss.
The World of Mana subseries is where Squaresoft started it's interest with action RPGs in 1991 with Final Fantasy Adventure and even further in 1993 Secret of Mana. We can see how impactful the Seiken Densetsu's/World of Mana's action RPG influence has been for Square over the years by looking at their other subseries such as Kingdom Hearts & Crystal Chronicles, along with titles such as FFVII: Crisis Core, FF Type-0, FF Explorers, FFXI, FFXII, FFXIV, FFXV, & FFVIIR. It's a shame the World of Man subseries died out in 2007, being solely relegated to smartphone games afterwards.
