With all the rumors and speculation around Nintendo's next console.What do you think the console will be? Lastly, what would Nintendo have to do, to make you pick up their next console on day one?

I get what your saying Poli_Games, but have to respectfully disagree with your opinion. For example I think Nintendo have continued to innovate even with Wii and WiiU, while others have just increased hardware power generation after generation.

i bought the Wii U at launch for my Son s B-day- I can t think of anything Nintendo can do for me to buy the NX at or close to launch- I ll have to wait long enough to see what direction they will be going w the console (not just launch window but beyond) and how they follow through- Additionally a healthy # of the more important (to my household) games will need to already be released

It needs to be powerful and versatile as well as a solid online system. I also think Nintendo needs to ramp up from the side scrolling jump games as while fun, they do not prove a valuable forum to show off console power.

The sentiment and frustration Joseph feels is definitely something I can relate to, though just a couple points: Cartridges definitely seem to be the way forward from disks, so I don't find that worrying; and I am actually down with the screen as long as its primary purpose is to allow us to play our console games from anywhere there is WiFi. Other than that, he's right. Just make a console that developers will have no issues supporting and I'll be happy. I have a PC for amazing graphics, so just make the NX capable of running games with at least as much quality as the XBone and PS4.

That is another rumor that the NX will be very easy to port games. Also, why does Joseph think combining the console and handheld will make it hard on the Devs? I think the NX will handle PS4 quality of graphics in handheld form. People in this day of age don't buy PCs because of smarts phones, which they can take anywhere with them. The NX could be the smart phone of video game consoles. Who really knows at this point though.

The sooner Nintendo permanently exits the gaming hardware business, the better it will be for the entire gaming community. The company is really totally lost when it comes to designing solid gaming hardware, they need to just give it up and go software only. Their last several consoles and handhelds have been cheap, gimmicky junk, and have polluted the hobby we all know and love with garbage gimmicks.

If you're expecting Nintendo to give up hardware experimentation just to appease a vocal minority like you, then you're missing the point of the company in the first place. Nintendo's core values have always been simplicity with novel concepts and lots of polish. Nearly every piece of hardware and software they've made have is built on these principles. If you're expecting them to toss them out and conform to being a generic blank-slate company like Sony and Microsoft, then sorry, that's not happening, no matter how much you want it.

Nintendo needs to modernize in a variety of aspects, but only to bring the company up to current online and hardware standards, not to simply pander to the SonySoft audience.

I think you don't understand. They won't be "giving up hardware experimentation" (aka gimmicks) just to "appease a vocal minority ". They will be exiting the gaming hardware business because the vast MAJORITY of gamers don't buy into their gimmicks anymore, and don't want to buy mediocre, feature-lacking hardware just to play a handful of Nintendo games.

For at least a decade, Nintendo's "core values" have been building the cheapest possible hardware, with many commonly expected features removed to save manufacturing costs, then throwing in a cheap gimmick to try to differentiate themselves. Unfortunately, while they were successful briefly with the Wii, that system died years before the competition, when the fad fizzled out. In the long run, the Wii seriously damaged Nintendo's reputation, and was well known for having tons of bad shovelware in its library.

The Wii U was a terrible successor to the Wii; barely upgraded, it was unable to even match the older 360 and PS3 that came out 6-7 years before it. They clearly put most of their effort and resources into the gamepad, leaving far too little left for the console itself. This became very clear when the Wii U couldn't even run multiplats as well as the 360 and PS3, a total embarrassment. And as much as they tried, they never could justify the existence of the gamepad. Star Fox Zero is a perfect example of that fact.

Sony and MS are giving gamers exactly what they want, solid well-designed consoles with full feature sets that are designed for one thing: to play games. No silly gimmicks that degrade the gaming experience, like the awful wiimote/nunchuks or oversized awkward gamepad. No one asked for those gimmicks, and the gaming community has judged them to be failures. The failure of the Wii U is proof of that.

@superchiller One of Nintendo's values has always been 'lateral thinking with withered technology'. The philosophy of taking older tech, but using it in new ways. It led to breakout successes of the GameBoy, DS, and the Wii. I'm not saying they need to be a generation behind the competition in hardware archecture again, but simply making a PS4 killer isn't the answer.

You don't speak for the vast majority of people. Maybe the egotistical "hardcore" set, but not the average consumer. Nintendo isn't giving up "gimmicks" anytime soon, regardless of what you think. Like or not, the Wii in many ways, returned Nintendo to it's roots. It was built on the same lateral thinking philosophy that the GameBoy and DS were built on, and had novel concepts used in unique ways. Was it perfect? No, but it helped make Nintendo a powerhouse brand again in the eyes of the public.

Truth is, it was the Wii U that hurt Nintendo's reputation, not the Wii. True the Wii was showing it's age, but the Wii U completely went against the design princibles laid out by its predecessor. It abandoned the elegant simplicity of the Wii Remote, in favor of a needlessly complicated contraption that wasn't even sold separately in stores. Casuals didn't want it because it looked like a pointless, expensive add-on, to something that works just fine for what they do with it. It wasn't just that the Wii's momentum died out, it was also that Nintendo failed to keep the momentum going.

Going into the NX. Nintendo just needs to take the core values that the Famicom, GameBoy, DS, and Wii were built on, and modernize them to the 2017 audience. Online needs to be up to date, and the hardware needs to feel like it was made in the 2010s. However, if you're expecting them to make a PS4 with Mario games, you're in for a rude awakening.

Nintendo is basically in a prime position. Most people already consider them publisher of the year and most think 3DS might be the system of the year.

The Wii U failed and is being terminated very early in its lifespan, 3DS sales are tanking, and they have no viable gaming hardware products on the market anymore. I don't think anyone but a small minority of diehard fans would characterize their position as anything else but seriously awful.
