Review: Doom (Sony PlayStation 4) | Digitally Downloaded

Review by Matt S.

I really don’t like this new Doom. I realise that is shaping up to be a controversial statement, based on the other early impressions I’ve seen of the game, but I really wonder if I’m playing the same game as these people… or perhaps my expectations with a game that wields the Doom name are simply higher.

Oh look, an opinion masquerading as a review. I hope you weren't paid for this because that would be theft.

Edit: For those of you who are confused, an opinion is a personal view on something where as a review is when you look at the features and functions of a game or product and make an assessment on its functionality and use.
Example of an opinion: "I don't like the gunplay because it's boring."
Example of a review: "The gunplay fails to bring anything interesting to the table as it only encourages one type of interaction that lacks in variety, this comes off as boring."
You can add an opinion to a review but without the review part it's just an opinion. This "reviewer" doesn't talk about the technical aspects of the game such as the movement system or level design he just mentions them and then talks about *how* he doesn't like them when he should be saying *why* he doesn't like them.

It's a review... He gave it 2 and a half stars out of 5. Which is 5/10

I disagree. Reviews are subjective and MUST be subjective. Subjectivity represents a huge part of the enjoyment people get out of game. A completely robotic and objective review would be useful to no one.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if a game is good or bad on paper. All that matters is if we like it or not, all things considered

I never said they're objective, I basically said that they need to be 50% objective and 50% subjective

Nowdays websites like this try to stand out by giving shit score/review on purpose to increase it's popularity. So typical. Even the Washington post or whatever they all profit from this, even when they are not relevant at all. Just don't click those baits, thats the only cure.

I've just defeated the first actual boss, and while I won't spoil anything for anyone that has yet to pick up the game or reach that point, suffice to say that I've got enough of the game behind me to be able to form an informed opinion. Man, do I love this game... the story, though not the greatest in gaming, is very lore heavy and extremely interesting, the performance is rock solid for the most part (with how frenetic gameplay is that's saying something), the map design is just impeccable, the controls are spot on, it's managed to still be beautiful at a darn near solid 60fps, it has an enormous amount of content, it offers a great challenge for those who seek a challenging game, and first and foremost... it's a blast! It's definitely one of my favorite games of this year so far. This is the second home run this gen that Bethesda (Machine Games/Id Software) have hit when stepping up to the plate to bat for older franchises, with this and Wolfenstein. My personal score at this point would be no lower than a 9. I'd have to really think for a second to be able to come up with a complaint for the game thus far.
