It's way too early for a PlayStation employee to confirm or deny a PlayStation 5.

2020/2021 just before Nintendos sequel to NX Due in 2021

Kalebninja3331d ago

NX will definitely not have a successor after just 4 years, that's the same lifespan as the Wii u and its only getting replaced that fast because it was pretty much a failure.

RosweeSon3331d ago

N64 came out in 1997... GameCube 2001.. There's no reason they couldn't have a console out again for 4 years.

Deadpooled3331d ago

Did your queen sarkeesian tell you that?

naruga3331d ago (Edited 3331d ago )

they forgot to put a 4. in front of 5 ...alternatively the title and the article is bs

_-EDMIX-_3331d ago

lol....yet NX is coming bud......

WE don't really know all that now.

Kalebninja3330d ago

@EDMIX I mentioned the NX release timing in my comment.

@Deadpool yeah how about get a life instead of following me around articles.

Not at all I thought everyone wanted a new console after 3-4 years these days... Not myself but all this talk of ps5 when the current one ps4 is barely getting going it's crazy I make my prediction purely on the gaps between Nintendos previous console launchs it's gone 6 years between NES/SNES then 5 between SNES-N64, n64/GameCube 4 years, gamecube to Wii was 5, Wii to Wii U was 6, Wii U to NX Is now confirmed as 5 and why not have their next console out in 4 years 4 years isn't overly short in this industry look at 3D and HD-DVD came and went in 4 years... Nintendo are launching in the middle of a generation i think they'll do ok I hope it's a success but Xbox are gonna have a new console (not slim or anything else currently rumoured) a new generation by 2019/2020 latest they are on the back foot. This may force Sony to bring it (ps5) in by 2020 but I still feel 2021 ps4 easily got another 3-4 years they've barely finished porting the PS3 back catalogue it's time for the ps4 games now.
Leaving Nintendo to have NX 2017-2021-22 latest and then hopefully be in line with the other 2 if Microsoft are still around even... Nintendo will be it's gonna be an exciting few years.
N64 wasn't a massive failure (sold 30+ million consoles) yet gone within 4 years due to the technology moving on them wanting to introduce discs.. The games are only gonna get so much better looking there's only so much they can do meaning they don't need new consoles every couple of years as they technically can't get much better at the moment... It's hard for them to make massive leaps as they did with say Pong-Donkey Kong...
PAC-Man to Mario-Shenmue-Real Life Sim1

Games have come a long way over the last 25 years but they can't get much better other than just being real life... I don't want that I enjoy the Games they are games not real life.

Kalebninja3330d ago

I would be done with consoles if they started doing 4 years standard, a lot of games take 3-4 years to make so that would mean we'd get one entry of a lot of series per console before we have to spend another 400+ to play the next one, it gives devs no time to master the hardware either, they'd get one shot and have to move on, a 6-8 years lifecycle is what needs to stay, consoles should stay as events rather then just "oh heres the next one give us half a grand"

Goldby3331d ago

Console wont have a 7/8 year console life cycle. supposed to be 5, 6 max. the only reason there was an extended console life cycle last gen was the recession. itll be coming out 2017 most likely, maybe this winter but i highly doubt it

Pancit_Canton3331d ago

Judging on the PS4 success? No, that would be a horrible idea on business stand point.

Summons753331d ago

So is this Ps4 Neo/4k/4.5 but they are sure ready to go ahead with that idea. Realistically we will be seeing the Ps5 by 2018.

RosweeSon3331d ago

The year after last guardian final fantasy and Shenmue 3 I don't think so what about Gran Turismos and God of Wars. Looks at God of war 1-2 on ps2 and Gran turismo 6 on PS3... PS4 hasn't even started yet.

Sharky2313331d ago (Edited 3323d ago )

Why is there so much talk about the neo being a mistake? If you thought they weren't going to come out with a console that was dedicated to the vr then you are crazy! That's all the new is. It will have 4K media play back with some sort of upscale to 4K for games. The added power is the vr processing box being added to the inside of the ps4. The neo is going to take place of the slim model that usually comes out around this time in a consoles life cycle. There is no way this is a bad idea! I usually wait and buy my second console when the slim model comes out. You wanna know why? Because it usually has some kind of upgrade wether it be a new chip or its quieter. My point is there's always some kind of upgrade no matter how big or small it is. I'm just sick of these articles!

garrettbobbyferguson3330d ago (Edited 3330d ago )

It will be a PS3 all over again. Below average hardware for much longer than is feasible. We've already see the PS3/360 ruin Dark Souls 2 with their abysmal hardware capabilities (yes, I am still incredibly angry about what From Software pulled with that game). Imagine how bad it will be when PCs have moved onto Pascal and AMD's new hardware while consoles are still trying to break into 900p 30-60 fps territory.

Ruggadagod3331d ago (Edited 3331d ago )

Even if the PS5 came out next year, the PS4 would still get lots of 3rd party support unlike that other current console that I shall not name. Playstation home consoles have long staying power. Sony doesn't mind having two home consoles on the market at the same time. It actually helps gain brand loyalty for lasting so long.

The Playstation 3 is 10 years old and is STILL being produced in factories unlike the Wii and Xbox 360.

fox793331d ago (Edited 3331d ago )

Playstation have jack it's because Sony are 3rd partys only hope soon as another console comes out that meets that demand but is better, then Sony will loose games just as quick as they gained them, remember the 360 taking all the games...Hmmmm

3rd partys will go where they want,Sony and Microsoft better hope they don't loose a good percentage of them because they will fail bad....

Miss_Vixen3331d ago (Edited 3331d ago )

Uncharted 4, Gran Turismo, Rachet & Clank, Infamous, Bloodbourne, Until Dawn, Killzone, Horizon,Detroit, The Last Guardian, Dreams, Gravity Rush, Little Big Planet... Etc

I'm sorry but PS4 has a good number of first party games.

SonyWarrior3331d ago

lol ps4 is not xbone, ps4 exclusives dont see PC releases. you wont ever see GT or any first party PS games on PC period, unless its over sonys dead body. I have a gaming PC and a PS4 for this reason, and just wait till the 100+ psvr games due out this year....

dreadz743331d ago

not until 2020 will ps5 come out especially with Neo launching later this year.

RosweeSon3331d ago

I agree. Ps4 has to flex itself yet.

Battlestar233331d ago

With the PS4 Neo rumored to be releasing i don't see Sony releasing any future consoles at least not numbered ones they will probably keep releasing upgraded console's every 3-4 years.

fox793331d ago

I'll get a NX me I like the sound of an upgradable console ie the Supplemental Device for much more processing power wow....Nintendo are cooking up something big and using Zen as your baseline graphics.

Aloy-Boyfriend3331d ago

No!

They will keep making consoles when the development ask them for more power. Upgrading the PS4 for eternity would not work.

Just like smartphone companies don't stop at upgrading their current models. People would start asking for fora successor-- something new. Same here with consoles

ninsigma3331d ago

To be honest I don't know how much further consoles could go after 1080/60 for a while. There aren't really any 1440p tvs and 4k will be expensive to implement in consoles for a while.

RosweeSon3330d ago

How will we all tell when we've changed generations? If anything they'll do the apple approach just not a new one every single year but one year it'll be a ps4 then 4-5 years it's a ps4.5 maybe 3-4 years but then after ps4.5 we get ps5 another 3-5 years down the line then the ps5.5? But it'll be their version of apples 5s, 6, 6s. Not necessary to change every time but if you want to play certain games at some point your gonna have to go up a number.

Inside the ‘Dragon Age’ Debacle That Gutted EA’s BioWare Studio

The latest game in BioWare’s fantasy role-playing series went through ten years of development turmoil

In early November, on the eve of the crucial holiday shopping season, staffers at the video-game studio BioWare were feeling optimistic. After an excruciating development cycle, they had finally released their latest game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and the early reception was largely positive. The role-playing game was topping sales charts on Steam, and solid, if not spectacular, reviews were rolling in.

HyperMoused1d ago

Its easy they called the die hard fans people in their nerd caves who will buy anything and then went woke to reach modern audiences....insulting the nerds in their caves along the way showing utter contempt for their fan base. very hapy it failed and any company who insults their fan base and treat their customers with contempt and insults, in future, i also hope fail.

neutralgamer199220h ago

It’s disappointing but not surprising to see what's happening with Dragon Age: The Veilguard and the broader situation at BioWare. The layoffs are tragic — no one wants to see talented developers lose their jobs. But when studios repeatedly create games that alienate their own fanbase, outcomes like this become unfortunately predictable.

There’s a pattern we’re seeing far too often: beloved franchises are revived, only to be reshaped into something almost unrecognizable. Changes are made that no one asked for, often at the expense of what originally made these games special. Then, when long-time fans express concern or lose interest, they’re told, “This game might not be for you.” But when those same fans heed that advice and don’t buy the game, suddenly they're labeled as toxic, sexist, bigoted, or worse.

Let’s be clear: the overwhelming majority of gamers have no issue with diversity, LGBTQ+ representation, or strong female leads. In fact, some of the most iconic characters in gaming — like Aloy, Ellie, or FemShep — are proof that inclusivity and excellent storytelling can and do go hand in hand. The issue arises when diversity feels performative, forced, or disconnected from the narrative — when characters or themes are inserted not to serve the story, but to satisfy a corporate DEI checklist. Audiences can tell the difference.

When studios chase approval from a vocal minority that often doesn’t even buy games — while simultaneously dismissing loyal fans who actually do — they risk not just the success of individual titles, but the health of their entire studio. Telling your core customers “don’t buy it if you don’t like it” is not a viable business strategy. Because guess what? Many of us won’t. And when the game fails commercially, blaming those very fans for not supporting it is both unfair and self-defeating.

Gamers aren’t asking for less diversity or less progress. We’re asking for better writing, thoughtful character development, and a respect for the franchises we’ve supported for decades. When you give people great games that speak to them — whether they’re old fans or new players — they will show up. But if you keep making games for people who don’t play them, don’t be surprised when those who do stop showing up

Armaggedon14h ago

I thought the writing and character development were fine. Sometimes things just dont resonate with people.

Sony has launched the PSN Store "Remasters & Retro" sale that discounts The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered for the first time.

OtterX1d 12h ago

That's great, Oblivion Remastered already on sale! Think I'll jump in.

I feel like Lunar Remastered should have been included on this one too though.
