Is it Time for Call of Duty to Return to WW2?

The king of the first-person shooter, Call of Duty, has strayed a long way from its roots. Here's why the franchise should return to the WW2 setting.

I miss the WWII FPS, I want to return to it, I miss urban warfare in towns and cities across Europe, sniping Nazi soldiers or flushing out Nazi snipers. having full environmental destruction and all the other advancements would be wicked cool.

gamingden2969d ago

I totally agree! I find that the WW2 games that did come out in the past all were so focused on the same battles and types of missions (D-Day, Stalingrad, etc.) that there's still tonnes of unused material that's so ripe for gaming. The Saboteur (which isn't an FPS) showed just how unique of a world you can still craft in the WW2 genre, so here's hoping that more developers take the well of material and run with it.

You must have forgotten the old Medal of Honour games (the Dreamworks made games not the EA made games). Those where awesome. The second games was made by the Sniper Elite guys.

I'd prefer a game where one could finally kill some Americans once and for all.

Majin-vegeta2968d ago

Bu bu but people would get butthurt Remember 6 days of fallujah last gen?

madpuppy2968d ago

That won't happen for one main reason, The US is the largest market for gaming, and there are a lot of people in the US that aren't gamers that would get upset and ban the game, Frankly, It is just a game, Besides, gamers kill US police, FBI and CIA all the time in games. for some reason, that seems to be tolerated. The only way you are going to get to kill US soldiers in a mainstream game is to play multi-player. You could hunt down those free games online that are made by programmers from other countries, I remember one made in the middle East that made the US the bad guys and you played as a "freedom Fighter", it looked like a 10 year old game but, they are out there.

I'm an American and I'd like that as well. People are too afraid to take on our Government. Please do! We need some ass kicking every once in a while. Not like we're some sort of bastion for good deeds, our politicians are just as corrupt as anyone else's.

kraenk122967d ago

@madpuppy

I know you are right, but that part of political correctness saddens me. It's hypocritical. I'd like a COD which would show all sides, that of an American, French, British or Russian soldier, but also show the sides of a German or Japanese soldier who had a family and was just sent to die by his government...up until there were only children left during the last days. It would give the whole shooting gallery so much more depth.

You guys just need to get red orchestra 2 and it's expansion, easily one of the very best WW2 games ever made.

Trolltroll2968d ago (Edited 2968d ago )

Just let the bodys lay there as objects. By the end of a pvp match there would be piles every where. The effect would be amazing/horrifying instead of walking blind into a ambush you would see your comrades lifeless bodies lying just past a gap in two buildings. War sucks but i want to see this.

No thanks we had too may WW2 Call of Duty games. How about we go back to WW1? Or a crazy idea go back to Roman empire times with bows and swords and stuff like that :)

kneon2968d ago

I bet even if they did WW1 it would still be told from an American perspective even though the US only showed up for about the last 6 months of the war.

d4v03332968d ago

Well of course cause it 'Merica!!! We rule the world! /s

PistolsAtDawn2968d ago

WW2 or modern day without all the futuristic stuff that just lends itself to cheap tactics....some of that is ok...but its too much now. WaW,BO1&2 were great IMO and BO3 does some great things..but I could do with it being MORE realistic than the trend its going in

Why the gradual death of the console exclusive makes business sense

And why Lego Horizon Adventures is coming to Switch.

Depends really. Like for example I moved onto pc so sony is missing out on the thousands I spend on games where they take a cut in the walled garden while most casuals won't do what I did and they'll make money. So it all depends how many die hard spenders switch to pc or just stay with sony

abstractel2h ago

Exclusives absolutely make sense. Nintendo, for an example, needs to keep exclusives to sell their consoles. So does Sony to a large extent. Xbox is just falling behind so much on the hardware front that they are trying a somewhat modified approach but they are still going to be producing exclusives if they are going to be producing new Xbox generations.

So far Sony has taken a good approach to PC, but so far the PS5 era hasn't been my favorite Sony era. Hasn't been bad, but not great. I hope that this is being rectified.

Knightofelemia1h ago

Too me it's just another goofy Lego game no different then the last Lego games. I think Sony putting it on Switch they are just trying to make some extra cash. It's not like Sony is actually porting Horizon on the actual Switch. It's a kid friendly game no different then Lego Batman, Lord of the Rings, Lego Star Wars. Sony owns the IP they can pretty much do what ever they want with Aloy. And there is no death to the console exclusive. Microsoft putting exclusives on other platforms is to make money. Porting exclusives to other platforms breathes new life into that franchise, opens the doors to new fans, and gives that franchise a new breath of air. Instead of sitting on the shelf collecting dust.

I appreciate the panel video featuring Layden, Pachter, and Burnham, where they provided insightful comments on the reasons behind the current business model's shortcomings.
For instance, discussing why companies have become risk-averse and how continually soliciting additional funds from the same audience ultimately fails to yield outstanding results.

Since the event was featured on IGN LIVE, it is highly possible that there were financial incentives from Microsoft and IGN for certain mentions.

Yep Xbox absolutely knocked it out of the park with that stunning show, it was everything a gaming showcase should be, games games and games, well done team Xbox.

CrimsonWing692d ago

It really did. Like I came out of that with the hype for new games I haven’t felt since… well the better years of E3.

monkey6022d ago

It was without a doubt one of the better showcases in years. There was plenty there that excited me. Something has been lacking in years on all platforms

EasilyTheBest2d ago

It was an amazing showcase I loved everything about it. Can't wait to play some of those games.

Show was so good, it made me forget about that blue dragon rumor until the next day. Too many games to process.
