New Disc May Sway DVD Wars.

Consumers wary of buying new high-definition DVD players because of a technology war reminiscent of the days of Betamax versus VHS will soon have a new kind of DVD that might make the decision less daunting.

Warner Brothers, which helped popularize the DVD more than a decade ago, plans to announce next week a single videodisc that can play films and television programs in both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, the rival DVD technologies.

Warner Brothers, a division of Time Warner, plans to formally announce the new disc, which it is calling a Total HD disc, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

In the end the consumer will not win. If you choose a format that will be invalid in 2 years you will loose. How long will this go on. I payed $150 for my fist DVD player. I will not pay over $200 for my first HD movies player. I am playing the waiting game.

Wait 'til holographic discs hit.

Seriously. Holographic discs are nearly ready to hit the market. And THAT is a cool name for a disc.

This could be the kind of tech that both format makers could embrace. Think of it as similar to Plasma vs LCD tv's. Can both exist in the market as high-end TV's? Yes. If this disc gets backed it would make both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players valid equipment in the market. Both sides could continue to create and market their machines and the format creators might be able to reap some small royalty off the hybrid disc....really depends on how they came up with the tech I guess.

Find the new disc format wars intimidating, a bit confusing? Then let's release another disc! And completely f*k with peoples minds...
