Can Sony hang on to the Lead?

Does Sony have a chance to lose their lead if PS4.5 is a flop and alienating their consumers? Can Microsoft take advantage of the anger some people may have towards Sony if this system is real.

"Can Microsoft take advantage of the anger some people may have towards Sony if this system is real."

Lol.

KwietStorm_BLM3074d ago

People sure love their manufactured controversy, don't they?

TFJWM3074d ago

If anything PS Neo is going to increase the lead. I am sure a fair amount of people that already own a PS4 will pick up Neo and for people that were waiting for the Slim model or still on the fence either the stronger Neo or a cheaper PS4 will push them to buy one.

Eonjay3074d ago (Edited 3074d ago )

Most controversy is manufactured. This one however is suggesting something that probably isn't possible:

Would people protest a stonger console by buying a weaker one... en masse?

SoapShoes3074d ago

Even if PS4 Neo failed, why would that stop the vanilla PS4 from selling? LOL! PS4 is going to keep selling whether PS4K fails for not. PSP Go didn't stop the PSP from selling.

Why o why3074d ago

Lol. How about can the xbox 1 hang onto the lead over the neo. . . Lmao

rainslacker3074d ago

Yeah, despite how a lot of people are likely to be pissed, if the PS4K flops, it's not going to render the original PS4 obsolete or undesirable. People will still continue to buy it, and three years into the generation, the people buying it aren't likely to be the ones that care or even know about PS4K and are more likely to care about the price than the power. Even if they care about power, PS4 still is more powerful than X1.

styferion3074d ago (Edited 3074d ago )

lol what anger, if anything this means normal PS4 will have price cut, which will lead to even more sales.. even Xbox gamers would be tempted to buy it if it has quite a big price cut.

and Sony just have to make some trade-in promotion for folks who want to replace their old PS4

Well of course this could only happen because PS4 has superior multiplatform and many interesting exclusives lmao, I wouldn't even look at it no matter how powerful or gimmicky it is if it doesn't have games...

Aloy-Boyfriend3074d ago

@Storm.

It's called Gaming Drama. Internet people love that. Something similar is happening right now on YouTube.

Aceman183074d ago

Hey writer of this article do you magically see the X1 selling on the level that PS4 is selling cause I sure as hell don't so I believe the lead is well and truly safe lol. Man gaming journalism at itsome finest lol.

Muzikguy3074d ago (Edited 3074d ago )

I can't believe all the fabrication in here. Even IF the system is real and even IF it's a flop (but still don't know if it's real), would Sony just stop selling consoles altogether? Would people take back their PS4s to subtract from the sales total and put MS in the lead?! Would people go out and buy more X1s over the more powerful, and already "winning", PS4?

Could mods stop approving these articles about the new, not even announced in production, PS4.5? All opinion pieces and all the same thing with sometimes a new question thrown in 😒️

I just thought of something. If the Neo is real, and does get released within the next year, then the X1 has had a 3 year head start. They can say they're WINNING!!! 😂️

rainslacker3074d ago

Mods don't approve the articles, The community does. The mods have the ability to fail an article, but unfortunately, these types of articles(editorial being the proper term) do fall within N4G guidelines.

But to answer your questions, no, the current PS4 base isn't going to dwindle, and while many people aren't too happy with the idea of a Neo, and swear to swearing off PS or consoles if it comes to pass, truth is, most people will just move forward with the new console, or simply upgrade at their own leisure. This is made possible due to some aspects of the rumor, and it's about the only way such a premise would ever be accepted.

But, if the Neo does release, expect a flood of used PS4's on the market as people trade up, which will drive down the price of used PS4's for a while, which will just increase the number of people buying them, thus bolster their install base even more, despite it not actually adding to their overall numbers sold...however software numbers will increase.

DeadlyFire3074d ago

I think Nintendo stands to gain the most ground from any negativity. As Microsoft also has new hardware under wraps. While Sony and Microsoft are pushing a longer gen. Nintendo is beginning it's new gen. Which one would be more appealing? It's up to the consumer.

IRetrouk3074d ago

i dont know if it would be a negative thing, it would all depend on the type of gamer, im the type thats gonna eat all three of these up, well at least the nx for now, as for the other two, all these rumors could be based on nothing more than a slim model being seen by someone, even the news that amd is making 3 new chips could be just revisions of whats already in two of the boxes with the third being in the nx. im more excited than anything to be honest, although i do understand some others opinions.

kayoss3074d ago

Ps4 is almost 20 million consoles ahead, I don't think x1 can catch up at all now.

Deadpooled3073d ago

Where did the 'Story Quality' and 'Like this website' options go? I would have definitely selected 'WTF' and 'NO' for this website

stuna13074d ago

People need to just be content with the fact that the Xbox1 will never catch up with the PS4 in overall lifetime sales, but the Xbox1 hasn't failed either. As far as the hate, fear or whatever you want to call it! It's unjustified because in the end it's not required for someone to invest in a PS4.5 in order to enjoy their gaming pasttime, it's optional where some will choose to take advantage of this option and some will choose not too. No split fanbase, just two consoles operating off the same premise! "GAMES"! Which will function for both consoles.

DarXyde3074d ago

I'd like to agree with you, but the hardware IS more powerful. I have a hard time believing Sony won't have games made from the ground up on Neo.

They say that now, but I'm feeling fairly confident, if not certain, they will make games only on Neo.

Bookmark this. Either I'll be eating my hat or I can submit a resume to Wedbush Morgan as Pachter's replacement.

OB1Biker3074d ago (Edited 3074d ago )

If they go the forward compatible route for the next console following neo then at some point in a few years there may be games you can play on neo but not on base PS4.
I hope they don't go this route and instead make PS5 a true new gen that will be very different (VR?) with exclusive games using the hardware potential from day 1. The cross gen games will be playable on the 3 consoles. In that case PS4K neo games will always be playable on base PS4.

Bathyj3074d ago

Because right, it would make sense to make a game for 5 million consoles and ignore 50 million. Thats the reason there will be no exclusives for Neo.

And people need to stop acting like Neo will be some huge upgrade that can make games that cant be done on PS4. Its not, and any game Neo can manage, PS4 can manage too. Worlds are not about to get a thousand times bigger.

Sharky2313074d ago

I have to agree with bathyj. This upgrade is not that big of a deal. With the vr push this new upgraded console will probably have a dedicated port. The outer processor will probably be built in. That could be where the extra power is coming from. It just makes sense to make a more dedicated vr console. If your not playing vr then the extra power can go towards games. I think it's a good thing. Definitely not something to be mad about.

rainslacker3074d ago

The reverse is also true though. Why spend copious resources taking advantage of the more powerful hardware when the install base for it is so small? It could lead to marginal improvements which make the Neo's value less because people will feel they aren't getting their money's worth. In the end it could come down to not enough people will buy the Neo until software makes it worthwhile, and software won't become worthwhile until it has a significant install base. It's like the Vita all over again except it doesn't require the expenditure of an entire game production to actually get games onto it.

Muzikguy3074d ago

@rain

Yes I agree with that. There are always going to be 2 sides or more to every situation. I do believe that Sony will try and push the new system with specific software. We can all sit here and speculate until we're blue in the face, but we really don't know anything more at the end of the day

Muzikguy3074d ago (Edited 3074d ago )

I'm with DarXyde on this one. They're going to try and push the "new" system too and I'm almost certain they will make exclusives just to do that. The arguments about selling to a smaller fan base seem strange to me. Every time there's a new console it's a smaller fan base yet it's still being developed for

I'd like to believe what you're saying, but I've been fooled before

Bathyj3074d ago

They sell to a smaller fanbase when new consoles come out because the generation has dragged out long enough and people are getting tired of the consoles theyve had for 7 or 8 years. Old gen game sales dwindle. New consoles rejuvenate the cycle and make everyone happy again. Selling to Neo only, when PS4 is selling like hotcakes both hardware and software, would be business suicide. Frankly its just dumb to even think that, I cant believe anyone thinks that would happen any time soon. And if it happens in 5 years time, who even cares, you will be more excited for PS5 by then.

Vanfernal3074d ago

It's funny that there seems to be more outrage about this, which to my knowledge hasn't even been confirmed yet than there ever was for the BS that Nintendo pulled with newer 3DS. If it's about running games nicer, it's always good to have options.

What anger lol I am excited about buying ps4 neo

It took ps3 6 to 7 years to eliminate 6 million lead that Xbox 360 had.

You know what's truly funny is Phil Spencer is the one who started all this talk of mid gen more powerful consoles

If anyone thinks it's just sony than just wait till e3. Xbox 1.5 will be revealed

But than these same Xbox fanboys who wrote daily articles will switch their times and praise the move by Ms

SavingPvt_Highon3074d ago (Edited 3074d ago )

Game for fun!

stuna13074d ago

Yeah sure!? And alienate the fanbase they have now? A full next gen console from Microsoft would do exactly what people are claiming a PS4.5 would do to Sonys fanbase! Except it would actually succeed. That would be the proverbial slap in the face of earlier adoptees.

Price, games, and actual R&D would technically be brought into play, because this wouldn't be a revision it would be a generational leap. Unless they want a repeat of the infamous RROD saga? If anything Microsoft would have to go with a incremental increase like Sony in order to release something in a timely fashion.

OB1Biker3074d ago (Edited 3074d ago )

Well I'm sure if someone asked Shu if he likes PS4.5 he would have given the same sort of reply.
Why would they want to downplay a new console?
Besides the Internet is misleading even more these days. Phil interview was before the PS4K neo was leaked and also lately supposely a Shu interview saying PS5 was only an 'if' is actually more than a year old.
Gaming sites are all assuming things and and copy pasting cynically I'd say. We ll see more clearly when one console is announced officially

Funny thing is I seem to remember back when Spencer first started talking about an upgraded console, before the PS4.5 rumors started, people were claiming it would be the doom of Xbox. Then the PS4.5 rumors start showing up and everybody flips, the people dooming Xbox were praising Sony for the exact same thing, and the people praising the Xbox start dooming the PS4.

I've said this before, but literally every annoying fanboy on this site, no matter which side they are on, is guilty of constant flip flopping and changing opinions. You're all a bunch of goddamned hypocrites.

travestyj3074d ago (Edited 3074d ago )

I don't know why anyone's plan would be to buy an even weaker platform because a stronger platform is coming out. Really doesn't make any sense.

If anything the basic PS4 dropping in price and having an option for a more powerful PS4 will increase sales. Not to mention the large amount of exclusives the PS4 is getting this year and next.

People still buy ps3 and Xbox 360, so....

Software_Lover3d ago

I really don't even think CEO's should get bonuses. If I were a CEO and I made millions, I would like to think I wouldn't. Or if I had to legally, I would maybe find a way to disperse among the lower tier employees. Take my bonus and turn it into stocks to disperse out to those employees evenly.

DarXyde3d ago

That would be the way to do it. Imagine thinking a CEOs "leadership" is worth that much money while the talent makes the product.

Insanity.

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

I remember when I started working, my department manager used to gift us stuff each year, one year I got a bottle of Scotch, another it was a small basket of treats... But that was also a lot less money than what we're talking about here.

It would be ideal if the CEO could gift a bonus to everyone under them.

thorstein2d ago

Monetary company bonuses (often referred to as Christmas bonuses) were astoundingly common.

The entire premise of Christmas Vacation was set around Clark's bonus.

MrDead3d ago

CEO's work for shareholders and are shareholders they also rely on share price to receive their multimillion dollar paydays and they will happily fire thousands to protect shares. CEO's are there to extract the most value out of a company and give it to the wealthy few.

redknight803d ago

That is so god damn fucked up!! Unfortunately...I know damn well I will be still buying their games but shit like this should seriously have some sort of repercussion of some sort. 550 people get their lives totally up-ended and the leadership get a bonus on top of an already high salary. 25M could set those 550 people up with an annual salary each of $45,000. Depending on where you live, that is a very livable salary even...

Serious Questions Must Be Asked About PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst After New Concord Report

"It took one trailer for your average Joe Shmoe gamer to know the fate of Concord. Meanwhile, Hulst was at the helm of its development thinking it was about to be "the future of PlayStation." The level of disconnect is tremendous. This isn't just a catastrophically expensive mistake from Hulst, it is an embarrassing one that raises serious questions about whether he is fit for the role he had, let alone the role has has been promoted to. Hulst and co. get paid untold millions to make the exact calls that just cost Sony half-a-billion dollars when they could have gotten a better counsel from the YouTube comments section. Suffice to say, Hulst and any other PlayStation leadership involved in this disaster have serious questions to answer.

Probably the most easily predicted flop in media history given it's horrendous reception. People wouldn't even try the free beta.

VenomUK3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

It’s 100% fair and right to examine Herman Hulst’s judgement, his capability and therefore his suitability to hold the title of CEO.

What happened with Concord? Did it have performance milestones that were missed? It seemed like it was half-baked, Acton and shooting and not much else so did Hulst push ǐt through being so basic because it was his baby? It makes you wonder what games are being greenlit and which ideas are being stopped.

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

@VenomUK,
It just makes me think of all the games we could have had instead of Concord, I know Sony wasn't interested in allowing a remaster/port/sequel to Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts, or Japan studios to create a new Patapon game, or a Gravity Rush/Ape Escape sequel. I hate to think what games died for this failure to exist.

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

The trailer did not look great, the demo just confirmed people's suspicions, I had no interest in the game.

MrBaskerville3d ago

Probably should have shown that trailer the year before. Instead of a 5 second teaser that revealed nothing.

A bit exaggerative. Half a billion? First we went from 200 million, then 400 million, and now its 500 million? In 3 days some blogger is going to claim Concord cost 700 million!

Yes, the game was clearly not going to succeed, nearly everyone knew this in advance, but if Hulst learns his lesson, and focuses on quality single player adventures (additional multiplayer modes are fine too!), then we're okay. If he doesn't learn, then he needs to get the boot.

This is a make-or-break moment for us to believe in him, don't screw it up. The rumored upcoming State of Play with some big announcements should help bring things back in order. I hope.

SimpleDad4d ago

So basically what you're saying is... wait for E3 for new single player games that will magically appear from Sony.
Herman will, from now on, listen to gamers by releasing Fairgames, Marathon and Horizon gaas.

Crows903d ago

Or maybe until their actual devs release their next games

Sonic18813d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The rumor State of Play will probably just be remasters of old games and more live service games. There's a disconnect between Herman Hulst and the Playstation fans. I'll be surprised if Hulst ain't fired by next year

-Foxtrot3d ago

I doubt they'd fire him, they'd just say there's "changes in management" or "internal restructuring"

Like Jim Ryan and his "early retirement"

Notellin3d ago

Is it really that difficult to understand? Don't be a bootlicker for Sony leadership.

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Who knows, they literally grossed 1 Mil, that's nuts, who knows how much was spent on the game, media and merch for it, marketing, refunding the game for customers... It's going to be bad, costings wise. I honestly can't see where all the development time and money went into this game.

@SimpleDad,
Even if he did change direction, we're not going to see the effects of that for years, possibly 3 to 4 years if anything changed, but I'm not feeling confident.

DarXyde3d ago

I don't know, mate.

This is more than, say, an oversight or misstep. Given the budget and life of this game, it's pretty much kiss-of-death worthy (or very close).

They need to move away from the GaaS stuff, but it remains to be seen if they will.

Chocoburger3d ago

If we blame Hulst for Concord, then we can also thank Hulst for Astro Bot. Its only fair that it has to go both ways.
Let's just see what happens next instead of just demanding that he be fired after only 6 months. Jim Ryan started the GAAS initiative, and its going to take time (literally 1 - 3 years) for things to turn around, that's just how the industry is these days.

DarXyde3d ago

Chocoburger,

You're right about that. No disagreement there. I'm not saying I'm not willing to give the guy a chance. He hasn't been in this position long at all.

What I am saying is this was an extraordinary blunder. It's good that Astro Bot succeeded and this failed because it gets the gears turning to figure out what people want.

If it was me, I'd just sell off their live service studios and do what they're good at.

Morales20223d ago (Edited 3d ago )

"The rumored upcoming State of Play with some big announcements should help bring things back in order. I hope."
You mean the one in which they would announce remasters and more remasters?! No, thanks.

MrBaskerville3d ago

I doubt there will be anything notable from first party. They usually reveal shortly before release and I doubt they have anything before spring next year. So if they reveal something, it will probably be in februarys state of play. And more by summer.

DarXyde2d ago

In fairness, they did say not to expect anything big dropping before March.

Even so, announcements heading into the holiday season to entice people to get on the PlayStation bandwagon is a good idea. Console this winter, followed by some games to hammer at your tax refund early next year.

@ravens thats called marketing, is he supposed to say: "nah it's kinda meh, not really interested in playing"? And it's apparently working because you guys believe every single word that comes out of their mouth, PR or not.

porkChop3d ago

He's been the head of PlayStation Studios, overseeing all game development and all acquisitions, for the last 5 years. It's not like he was some outsider that just joined PlayStation 3 months ago. Yes, Jim Ryan was the guy at the top. But it would be very naive to think that Herman Hulst wasn't also an integral part of all this.

And if it takes 4 years to see the fruits of new leadership then consider that Hulst became the head of PlayStation Studios 5 years ago. Everything we've seen over the past year would be the fruits of his leadership starting to kick in, no?

DarXyde2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

This comment isn't cringe or immature at all.

We online are not really what you'd call "normies". We really are more dug in than your average gamer. In knowledge and awareness of the industry.

We're also not a monolith. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone likes Call of Duty. People are super vocal about how it's stale, yet it sells every year without fail.

Maybe Hulst and Ryan simply aren't terminally online and realize the internet doesn't exactly translate into public reception?

Perhaps those defending PlayStation leadership here don't feel the same way you or I might about how the ship has been steered this generation?

You're not the only one who reads silly nonsense from fellow fans (if you will call their comments silly nonsense). If it bothers you that much—to the point that you come out with...this—it might be time to hit some random keys when you change your password, mate. For your own sake, it is nowhere near that deep.

Rimeskeem1d 11h ago

Ok so you are somewhat correct, Herman Hulst managed studios since 2019, at which time Firewalk was not technically part of PS studios. In 2023 Sony purchased Firewalk, Herman Hulst was then placed as a CEO of SIE and Studio Business Group in June of 2024.

So basically he didn't have the final say on purchasing Firewalk. The person to actually blame for this would be Jim Ryan. He was the head of everything until he retired in 2024. Herman Hulst was under him.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 1d 11h ago
CS73d ago

Good lord. The Sony defending is ridiculous at this point. People need to realize that defending them is what LEADS to Concord type failures. We NEED to call out stuff like the live service push, stupid PS5 Pro price and bare bones PS5 exclusive line up.

The same stupid defense arguments were made when the reports came out that Sony was doing live service instead of a strong push back from fans and here we are in the thick of it.

The point of the article is the Hulst should have taken one look at the steaming pile of trash and said hell no and moved on, like millions of fans obviously did.

Not pour hundreds of millions into its completion (which could have gone to better PS5 single player exclusives like Astro Bot) or even into a better multiplayer IP like SOCOM, Warhawk, Killzone etc.

He didn't and that's a problem. Playstation leadership is out of touch.

(And please no one reply and say Xbox, they're dead and this point and not even worth comparing to)

Michiel19893d ago

Saying that it's not (only) Hermen Hulst who is at fault is not defending sony, it's observing the timeline and using common sense. Playstation's whole strategy with the live service was just a failure, they could maybe have done 1 besides helldivers, but there is no reason to make a scapegoat out of this guy for things when they were greenlit, he could do nothing about.

JackBNimble3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Ya, this is my exact question. The game was in development for 8 years, what role does Hulst actually have in this?

If anything Jim Ryan was at the helm for a much longer period of time while this game was under development and Jim was the one originally pushing gass.

I don't know anything about this Hulst guy, but is he really the one accountable or just the fall guy?
And isn't there a second sony CEO? I thought there were 2 running the show this time around?

MrBaskerville3d ago

But wasn't he responsible for the game divisions or something, before becoming CEO? Ryan is probably the one to blame though, he must have been responsible for the gaas pivot that has stalled things.

The character design is NOT the issue here. Pokemon patented bullsht. You can patent "Throwing an item to capture a virtual character and another action to release an item that releases a combat character onto virtual world" but my god that is vague as fuck and shouldnt hold in any court...and the kicker? it was patented AFTER palworld was made.

If this lawsuit goes through that is literally going to work on every single monster capture game,

It's like Rockstar suing another game if they have a guy opening the car door and yanking them out to steal the car because that's why you do in GTA so therefore that game is infringing on GTA's "patent". And that's the reason why Pocketpair is fighting this because if they lose this opens the doors to MORE lawsuits of this kind.

Weren't the wire models used in palworld ripped out of Pokemon in the end?

porkChop4d ago

No they weren't. That was proven false. And, again since people don't seem to understand, this is not a copyright lawsuit or about stolen content/assets/designs/etc. It's a patent lawsuit. So far all the possible patents I've seen were filed by Nintendo 4 months *after* Palworld released.

Then I have no clue what this is about specifically

--Onilink--4d ago

The catching mechanic patent was filed even before Arceus was released, I dont know which ones you have been watching because all the ones I’ve seen were before Palword came out
(Though not all have been approved in the US yet, just in Japan)

The patent for the catching mechanic was filed July 2024 and granted August 2024. It was filed on top of a separate, "parent" patent that had been filed in 2021. Nintendo filed new patents and had them expedited just so they could sue Pocket Pair/Palworld.

it's so dumb. if that patent holds any water in court - any monster capture game is done and gone. cnts.

NotoriousWhiz3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Source that says it was filed in July? I couldn't find it. And everything I can find states that it typically takes around a year or more for patents to be approved.

On behalf of their money seems like the biggest reason

People want Nintendo to lose as a big middle finger to the company, but if Nintendo wins then they set a precedent for others to follow which could be bad for Nintendo themselves if they end up infringing on a patent owned by someone else

The one I'm reminded of is, a few years ago Sony patented something to do with AI controlling a characters moments in a game to "help get past difficult or grindy parts" of a game

Mario kart 8 deluxe had a the auto acceleration and auto steering technology implemented, so potentially if that came back for mario kart 9 could possibly open the door for Sony to sue them if it's close enough
