Cross play would be ideal but it has rarely worked.

Alexious3351d ago

It works just fine in many games. They probably just don't want to bother with merging Microsoft's and Sony's online networks.

Garethvk3351d ago

That is also a big factor. Making two or more rivals work with one another.

TheCommentator3350d ago

FFXI was cross play with PS2, 360, and PC, so I'm not sure what kind of hold up there is with getting cross play to move forwards this generation.

KillZallthebeast3351d ago

You're right the US was much better off when we all had different water fountains

Liqu1d3351d ago (Edited 3351d ago )

What? How has it rarely worked?

Garethvk3350d ago

Microsoft had a few that they tried with Vista and it did not work. There was also the issue with Portal 2 as the PC and PS3 had lag issues and the control issues were highly favorable to PC users.

Felix3133351d ago (Edited 3351d ago )

it works fine across PC and PS servers, they might add it later as their team is a lot smaller these days and I'm sure their priority is getting it launched asap, and implementing cross-play would hold the launch back too much.

Seemed like the perfect game to do it

Hoffmann3350d ago

You talk to someone who was once thrown out of a church after pissing on the altar in front of a ton of people.

KillZallthebeast3350d ago

don't talk about my normal weekend routine

Anthotis3351d ago

It'll be a ghost town in no time then. What a complete waste.

kingPoS3351d ago

I don't think I'll be a waste. But at the same time, it won't have cross-platform support. Unfortunately that means the dcuo community on xbox will have to stand on it's own legs. Expect to see some sort of advertising push on the Xbox's dashboard.

They said that about Neverwinter also when the decision was made not allow cross platform play between Xbox and PC players. "They" were dead wrong.

PhoenixUp3351d ago

This would've been the perfect game to demonstrate how willing Microsoft is to allow cross-play for Xbox Live with other networks, but apparantely not.

Looks like the PS3, PS4, and PC versions are the better ones to get in that regard.

DragonbornZ3351d ago

Yeah it wouldve been a good one. There's no reason stated in the article tho. I wonder what happened.

YinYangGaming3351d ago

It's unclear whether this is a decision made by Microsoft but considering their willingness towards cross-platform play vs. Sony who is now turned off against the idea I'd say this was more a Sony/Daybreak decision imo

MasterCornholio3350d ago

Sony never said they would ban Microsoft.

They were always open to cross platform play.

Problem with you people is that you believe it's something that can be enabled by flipping a switch. Like Major Nelson taught us it takes time to apply the effects of a 180.

Cross platform play will happen between PS4 and XB1 but it will take some time for developers to incorporate that into their games.

Avernus3350d ago

Sony has been doing it for years now, and all of a sudden it's SONY who's "turned off" of the idea?...lol, ok

TheCommentator3350d ago

You forget that MS already stated that they opened up XBL to cross play between consoles and the option was ready for any developer who wanted to take advantage of the feature. It was Sony who fumbled around with ambiguous statements when pressed for information... something ambiguous about how they'll have to investigate things on a case by case basis.

It's more likely that this is a developer issue and they are intent upon implementing the feature when they have time to do so. Who knows though, maybe there's too much red tape on Sony's end to get the game launched with the feature? All anyone can do is speculate since they didn't mention why it's not happening in the article, but it's quite obvious this has nothing to do with MS.

jb2273350d ago

You also make the mistake in taking anything MS says for gospel & being quick to label anyone not outright being dishonest to their consumers as "the bad guy".

At the end of the day, MS can come out & say that cross play is "ready for any developer" only to tell certain devs on the downlow that they can't access it, or they can make it so difficult to implement that they won't bother with it. That way they can pick & choose the games & platforms they want cross play with (big hint: Xbox & Win10 PCs) while still seeming open. Devs working w/ MS won't tarnish their relationship by calling them or their policies out so they get to keep their image of being open w/o actually being so. All of that is a huge possibility here, and we've seen MS obfuscate the truth about the exclusivity of RotTR and we've seen them outright lie about QB's exclusivity so to automatically take anything they say for gospel is a little backwards.

Meanwhile Sony hasn't opened up much beyond "looking into" cross plat play w/ MS and they don't necessarily ever need to, they can just do it or not. They should look into these kinds of things first before they sell it to their gamers, I fully expect that. I don't want them to take the PR route of just blurting out whatever they can to keep people happy only to never follow through with it, and I don't want them to write checks that end up being cashed to our detriment.

TheCommentator3350d ago

Lol, JB. What I said about the topic is what is actually known about cross play on consoles at this point. Nearly everything you're saying about this subject is simply a biased opinion full of hypothesis about why MS is the "bad guy", and Sony is not. At any rate I never said Sony is the bad guy, just that they haven't made it clear what their stance is yet while MS has made it clear what theirs is. That makes it more likely that Sony is to blame for lack of cross play, if the developers themselves aren't to blame. Whatever though, until I hear otherwise, what both companies say is what I currently believe.

Why are you so hurt by the truth anyways? It's downright childish of you to obfuscate the point with all your off topic whining about things like exclusivity.

jb2273350d ago

Yup.

Said this from the very beginning, but the entire 'open to cross platform play' was pr fluff talk that journos & gamers ran wild with. The only truth behind that announcement & the entire point of it was to say that MS will support some cross platform play on a case by case basis. People acted like it meant that MS were entirely open & they'd have no questions asked cross plat play all around all the time. They assumed it meant that any XBO game that didn't have it would only have been held back by that game...its devs & other platforms were automatically the "bad guy" in any situation. It's the same way MS has been playing their PR game this gen, they tell half truths or make big bold statements that can't really be disproven in the here & now, that will only be clear in the long term as to their validity. People eat it up though apparently.

MMOs In 2021 Retrospective: Console Edition

WTMG's Thomas Medina: "As far as I’m concerned, console MMOs have always been in a weird place. PC is where the main game is most popular. MMOs were born there, work best there, and have the vast majority of titles. Mobile is then next in line, with touchscreens and portability that adds something new while functioning well. Console gaming, on the other hand, is not portable (for the most part). Plus, it uses a controller, which is not the best instrument when your control scheme requires a thousand buttons and a cursor. That being said, there is an audience, and where there’s money to be made, publishers find a way. So here we are with some of the biggest console MMO games and how I feel they handled 2021. "

Best Superhero Video Games Available Right Now

From Xfire: "A lot of video games are designed to make players feel like a superhero. However, very few actually feature superheroes or have players take on the role of a superhero. What makes this even worse is that there are even fewer superhero video games that can be considered good."
