Game Over: 3 Common Archetypes That Hinder Female Characters

Janet from Bit Cultures set out to discover what makes a strong female character but realized that many of their favorites either weren’t leads and/or they were designed/written in a way that was problematic. Here are three archetypes she found that female leads often fall into.

"Problematic"

SJW article confirmed.

wonderfulmonkeyman2980d ago

Precisely.
You'll notice that not once do these sexist dirtbags point out all of the negative stereotypes focused around guys.
That right there shows that feminists are all fine and dandy with drooling over a hot guy, but lord forbid a woman be sexy and drooled over by men, game character or not.

antikbaka2981d ago

SJW's and transhit post. The author can't be pleased whether there are female characters or not. She is unable to percive reality as it is

Zerii2981d ago

I just don't get these stuff about Women nowadays, including Tracer's pose and stuff.... Why bother so much with stuff like these ??? We have Men extremely ripped, with big muscles and stuff like that in games as well, and we don't care about it, why women should be special ? you don't like it, don't watch it/play it, it's so damn simple !!! Maybe it's me that it's at fault !

It's called power fantasy. Most male gamers are not the most alpha of folks, and this is pretty true of this community as well, but they can vicariously live as the big strong men they'll never be in video games. I think most women can agree that being sexy is nice, but it's also mostly something just for eye candy. They essentially want their version of the male power fantasy which I described before, and attractiveness isn't really a big part of seeming strong. A lot of the whole "sex female character" is a relic of gaming past, where games were exclusively marketed to boys. Obviously today girls buy games just like guys, so it's not marketed that way fully anymore. However like Hollywood producers and studios, game publishers and executives are a bit slow to change.

If this still makes no sense I'd ask you to consider the following. Imagine if all male characters suddenly were all ripped, wore just armored g strings, and obviously were packing, and at the same time they were't really good at fighting. Say all the female characters were the ones that had to do everything. That's kind of how it is.

I should say that men aren't treated well in media as well. I mean think of all the ads with the clueless guy whose wife/girl friend needs to swop in and fix things with whatever is being sold. The stupid male trope isn't exactly one I like, and I think that's not something you guys like as well (or maybe you do?). That being said, after being told for a quite a long time that they just need to look pretty and cook well, women might be a little sensitive to how all these characters seem to be mandated to be sexy?

That's nothing like how it is. There's always been female characters in games and fantasy in general who are as if not more formidable than male characters. What you just said is complete gibberish.

If you have a problem with women's biggest selling point being their sexuality then you're gonna be perpetually triggered, because that is how men judge them as well as how women judge each other and compete against each other. If anything, SJWs should be grateful that fiction makes women out to be much more than what they really are.

The problem with setting up the argument like this is, there are pros and cons for everything.
So no matter what you do, there will always be an issue with this.

... my god, its like I'm arguing with my wife again!

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire95116d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro116d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot116d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist115d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx116d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic1881116d ago (Edited 116d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire95116d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist116d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp116d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg116d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion116d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
