Console Upgrades Shouldn’t Be The Future Of Consoles

I honestly dont know how i feel about all of this. This latest "rumor" is that the gpu will be double in size. I feel like I'm almost forced to go the pc route at this rate. And no offense to the master race but pc gaming just isn't my thing.

We brought this upon ourselves though. We keep telling these companies "more power more power". What happened to more creativity?

It won't. PS4.5/4K is just gonna be a PS4 with an upgraded hdmi port and bigger hard drive. It won't have a better cpu or gpu, it's just gonna be able to play 4K movies.

I was on the fence about this but I'm completely okay with PS4k as long as they don't split the userbase. The PSVR could use the helping boost in power and 4k is beginning to become mainstream and down the line when it'll be the standard as 1080p, the PS4k can breath more life into the PS4's life cycle before the PS5 comes out. Or who knows, the PS5 could be out in three years.

Sony could simply change the form factor of the PS4, herald it as the best PS4 ever and charge $400 and no one will complain. Instead they upgrade the GPU, CPU & Memory and everyone complains. I don't get it, someone enlighten me please.

- enough people don't like the idea of having to buy another PS4 in the same gen, no matter what you think of it
- not all (if not most) developers are happy with this, some have come out and said so, plenty of reasons to think of here, 2 systems to work on, test, optimise, etc.
- due to already many time constraints and deadlines they either don't use the potential of the new model enough or optimise enough for the previous model
- seeing trailers for new games even when they come from Sony don't mean the game is going to look like that on your model of PS4, it could be better looking when they've shown the regular PS4 version and you have the 4.5 or the other way around

This means all those crappy and shoppy games that run a 40fr and had frame rate issues will now work at 60fr steady, and online gaming will be bad because if you are playing at 40fr and the other is playing at 60fr them there is a major advantage to those that have the superior model, that defeats the porpuso of console gaming.

I think upgradeable consoles would be a good idea. Why buy a new console if you could just swap a card with processors? In order for it to work and gain market share I think that the upgrades would be every 5 years or so, not something available at launch that would split the consumer base. The upgrades could be built to allow BC for the previous generation. Manufacturers could release different housings or special editions and the consumer would insert their card and a hdd into the housing that they like

Reminds me of the 90's where we got an era of useless game devices and peripherals that everyone thought would be revolutionary to the industry.
