PlayStation 4 outsells Xbox One in March

PlayStation 4 was the top-selling new gaming console at United States retailers last month, according to data from industry-tracking firm The NPD Group that Sony Interactive Entertainment provided to GamesBeat. PS4 has outsold the competition for 13 of the last 15 months. The Xbox One came out on top in April and October in 2015, and it continues to sell well — but Sony has all of the momentum. Nintendo’s Wii U, meanwhile, is likely on the way out as the company shifts to mobile gaming and its new codenamed NX dedicated hardware to try to find new revenues in the $99.3 billion gaming business.

Ps4 won two years of sales now due to it winning 24 months. I really see the ps4 continue this trend even when the Nintendo nx is out. The nx might win its first two or three months but the ps4 will consistently outsell everything after. The Wii U, though a decent console, just wasn't what people wanted. The new leadership seems to really have a good handle on what gamers want. So to answer that, I would believe in the NX. I do believe in the NX.

Are mobile games what you want from Nintendo? Because they seem hell bent on catering to that market.

Personally what I want is the next N64, equal or more power than current competitors, full Nintendo 1st party support, full 3rd party support and their usual dose on console gaming innovation(controller/portable console hybrid or VR?).

If they finally decide to check those boxes I swear I'll camp outside my local games shop 2 days before release.

Nintendo has its core fans like myself. I always buy their consoles because i love their magic touch and the attention to detail they give their games.

Good job Sony and MS for both still moving up while poor Nintendo is sadly unappreciated.

I won't lie, I backed the wrong horse this time around. I only have the wiiu and while the games that been releasing for it are fun and entertaining I can't help think that they had a big missed opportunity with the hardcore crowd.

Personally i just haven't gotten around to getting the XB1 and PS4 and i usually do end up getting all the systems within a generation.

I like to be optimistic and say I will this year and there may be a chance that both will release cheaper versions later in the coming months so the optimism is still there.

I think the only thing that Nintendo is missing is third party support. People talk about gimmicks & poor networks & all of this stuff, but if the Wii U came out decently powered to run third parties, we'd be having a different conversations right now...We might be looking at a similar lineup in terms of placing, but the numbers would be much closer.

It seems so simple & yet so difficult for someone at Nintendo, release a decently powered box, get third party support & maybe a slightly better network & we will be back to a 3 horse race.

Although that said, gaming in general has never supported a 3 horse race to my knowledge. It's always been 2 w/ a distant 3rd, aside from last gen maybe, but that was a strange one.

* I care about games. I own a Wii U & XB1, and Wii U has by far the more fun overall first party games. Even more so than PS4 ( although that will eventually change over time with more games coming to PS4)

* I'm missing out on a ton of awesome games on the PS4 though and I'll probably eventually get one unless some of those come to the NX.

* I am most excited for the NX though by far. Wii U is good for what it is, but was never going to be able to compete with the PS4 and it's 3rd party support.

* I don't know if NX will sell better than the PS4, but I do know it will sell better than the Wii U and to me that is all that matters.....that the NX is better than Wii U.

* PS4 didn't have to be better than XB1 or Wii U....it just had to be better than the PS4 and it is.

* They are all worth owning, as are the 3DS & Vita & PC as well.

That's not how this site operates. Nobody ever looks at the fact that both consoles are selling well and making money. To fanboys on both sides, all that matters is "winning". If people were smart, they would WANT both consoles to be neck and neck. Then both companies would be forced to innovate to gain the upper hand. Why people desire a monopoly for their system is beyond me. It would result in higher priced consoles with less features. If you're going to disagree, I would love to hear the argument for a "one console world".

I'm really not surprised by this. Good for Sony, they deserve it IMO. Microsoft keeps slashing the price of their console and STILL can't outsell the PS4. With PSVR coming I can see this continuing for sure.

One thing that has been really getting to me this gen is how every place that sells video games has the same amount of space or more for the X1. That's annoying and frustrating when PS4 has sold more and has more games for it. I've been trying to be a "Good Samaritan" and buy local, but that crap is making me think of buying all my games from Amazon

I've about fully given up on brick and mortar stores now.
I buy blu ray movies & as far as that goes I buy online.
I will buy a game occasionally at a store if I happen to be going that way anyway. IDK about everywhere else but at my local stores, blu ray movie sections are slowly shrinking. I usually buy games on amazon, release day delivery is nice along with the prime benefits.
I wish there was a store nearby totally focused on media.

The big three pay for that shelf space, so they're going to be given whatever the companies pay to have it there. If the companies don't pay, they'll be lucky to get one or two wall sections or a center aisle type shelf unless a system is particularly popular in a region, in which case, the stores may show more of the product to keep customers coming in and hopefully get more sales.

Yeah, I know they pay for it. That's why the shelf space always favors Microsoft. You'd think if you were running a business that you'd want the popular stuff out there and a wider selection than your competitors. These guys do the opposite and wonder why people shop online. Best Buy has been bogus with what they allocate to games and even GameStop has. I obviously don't run either company but I think they're thinking is flawed. I want to see a wall of games. Tons of selection. I'm not going into Best Buy looking for coffe pots and microwaves 😏️

My local BB and GS have more space allocated for PS than for Xbox. Kind of the opposite of last gen really. I remember when they were doing the reset at GS, and at first, it was more space for Xbox(leaving Xbox with a couple more shelf sections), but now PS has practically half the store with PS3 and PS4 being roughly equal, and a pretty decent sized Vita/PSP section.

While companies do pay for shelf space, they probably aren't going to pay more than what they feel it's worth compared to the customer base of a region....and I suppose in my particular region, PS has just been more popular. This area has a ton of development studios, and is a pretty technical area being the east coasts silicon valley of sorts, so maybe the more powerful PS4 just became more popular here this gen.

The Wii U sold well at first as the core Nintendo fan base rushed out to buy it, but unfortunately for Nintendo there just aren't that many fans left.

It's possible the same could happen again with the NX, but it will need some big games up front, not promises of games years in the future.

But even if it starts well I don't see how they are going to grow their fan base. The Wii gen forged a reputation of Nintendo being the console of choice for kids and grandmas. I don't know if they have what it takes to change that perception.

The Wii was a fluke, pushed by a good ad campaign that got the attention of house wives and casual gamer's. That, and the controlled shortages that I myself fell for. Had a few good first party games and little third support, just like Wii U. People learned their lesson. Hope Nintendo have with the NX.

I have a Wii U along with everything else, just not my preferred console. All the consoles have something that the die hard gamer's can find to like, me included, but not always enough for the mass market though.

April will be a far more interesting month with Quantum Break and Ratchet & Clank releasing in the same month. At least then, we can draw some conclusions regarding who bought these games, people who already had consoles or people looking to buy them. Microsoft has run away with a few months this generation. You realize this, yes? It even outsold PS4 when there was nothing special about that particular month (in this case, April of last year).

Months it has outsold PS4 are sparse, but it did so when PS4 received a price cut (October, 2015). There are just months when Xbox One resonates better with consumers, however rare that is.

What I'm saying is, you figure that, with a price cut in March and The Division being advertised with Xbox One, AND with Quantum Break releasing very shortly into April, it's not unreasonable to think Xbox One sales might have taken a slight edge over PS4's.

They didn't. April should be very interesting to say the least for the reasons I mentioned.

Microsoft saw Sony dominating the living room with the PS1 because before then, the SNES ruled that area and the NES before that so they tried console gaming with the Xbox original. It actually sold as much as a Nintendo console which is scary to think about at the time and actually got some good 3rd party support. They got confident and made the Xbox 360 and gained even more marketshare. The Xbox 360 was the first time that Sony seen a direct threat towards their home console marketshare and at the beginning struggled but gained footing. 360 held it's own somehow even with all the hardware problems. Many people never forgot about those hardware issues with the Xbox 360 and decided to never buy an Xbox console again including myself.

Then Microsoft got cocky and now look where it got them. Many people who were probably with Playstation but decided to get a 360 simply went back to Playstation that's all. Playstation was always a more fierce and powerful console brand. It has more total software and hardware sales than the Xbox brand and is more easily known worldwide.

All microsoft wanted to do was simply stop sony from dominating but they couldn't. They only delayed it for 1 generation with the Xbox 360 and then as soon as Microsoft and Sony were on equal footing, what happened? Xbox got stomped again.

MS rushed the 360 to market due to a pricing dispute with NVidia. basically, it was going to cost more to keep making the OGXbox, which was the opposite direction they needed to go to compete against the PS2, and looming PS3.

While MS should have done their due diligence and made sure the 360 didn't have a manufacturing flaw, the rush to market actually didn't have anything to do with Sony, rather NVidia asking for a lot more for their GPU's than they were worth at the time.

It ended up benefiting them in the end due to the headstart over Sony, who waited until they could get good yields on the Blu-Ray diodes which were super expensive at the start, as well as CELL fabrication to become up to par for high yield production, which has led some to speculate that Sony actually wanted to release sooner, but couldn't. They were already losing a lot on each console sold at the beginning of last gen, imagine how much more they'd be losing if they maintained the same prices, but had to pay significantly more for the parts.

It's hard to imagine if there would have been a X1 had the 360 sold as well as the OGXbox in terms of market share against Sony.

Make it $199, take a loss on hardware, and hope for the best(ie. Sony screws up somehow and NX flops hard).

They have some good games coming, but they're quickly coming to a point where their system selling staples are not going to be able to have the turn around time in development that they've had up until this point. Couple other titles, like QB or Crackdown, may satiate people in the meantime, but the other games they have going on, 2nd or 1st party, don't strike me as something that's going to light up the system sales.

I really think with the new NX, and Sony's own PSVR, that MS isn't going to be able to rely on this "Best lineup" or vague marketing promises(Cloud/DX) like they have been up to this point. A new system and VR are going to be infinitely more exciting to a lot of people, and after GeOW4, there isn't any other mainstream franchise for them to capitalize on other than the yearly Forza...which in itself isn't as exciting as new hardware. It's almost as if MS used all it's ace cards these first few years to just get to where they are, but nothing to really go on after that except some new IP's, mostly from 2nd party.

I know there are too many sales articles compared to how relevant they are for gamers but NPD results are just news and sites are not going to stop telling news every second Thursday of the month. Just like I love gaming on my Vita even if it doesn't sell much in the west gamers will always love playing on their console regardless of the sells.
I'm a bit surprised by the gap this month and I assume many gamers were waiting for QB bundle to buy an xbox just like many will wait for Uncharted 4 bundle to buy a PS4 next month which will be interesting to see the result then.

Bad news for us ps4 gamers. The more ps4 sells during times of no new big i.p's, especially with significant multiplayer, the less Sony has to try to satisfy the consumers. Sonys sales lead is effortless, and i'm guessing e3 will be about advertising deals and digging up old titles to remaster for maximum publicity. I', looking forward to UC4, but after that i'm not so sure.

Struggling to see any logic in this comment. Firstly, the advertising deals, exclusive marketing and timed content models were started and led by MS last gen... especially with COD, GTA and other major third party franchises. MS invented this marketing abomination seen in the industry today, and were very successful in doing do. Sony is now following suit.

Secondly, how is Sony being effortless? Because you are not interested in the games being released exclusively on the platform doesn't mean they aren't any games worth while. Sony has had at least a console exclusive released every month this year...

Can only talk from my own perspective. Just isn't a great deal for myself apart from UC4, but i'm sure there's plenty for many others. I think Rime will be multi-plat. Who knows, maybe there could be another Infamous in the works ?

I mean its one thing to say hey what does Sony have after UC4..its another to ignore other AAA games . But yet complain Sony does not really have any..

If they can't relaunch the system well with the incoming revision/slim, then I don't think there is anything left they can do to "win" the US. Which is their most relevant market. Maybe they can lead in a few months in the year, but Sony will still dominate and widen the GAP in the US, UK and ROTW.

There is nothing Microsoft can do to change the direction of Xbox One in terms of sales.They had one chance to win over the public which was back in 2013 and we all know how that went.There aren't many willing to buy a machine[Xbox One] which offers less performance over the affordable more powerful option{PS4} available.

This game sold much more then the others new ip, but how many did the others sold? And how much did this one sold? Well those numbers you will never know or they combine platforms

Its more than just sales..its Microsofts Direction they have taken with the xbox as a entire platform & the xbox eco system.

Many look at only sales but I think overlook the xbox as a platforms most glaring problem..Microsoft only really supports one console at a time..and really only in select regions around the globe..now nothing wrong with that really , Microsoft is playing to its strength' s..but if you intend to grow your brand on a world wide scale..not so much..

Here is such examples:

The xbox 360 is still on the shelf..but yet unlike Sony or Nintendo has Microsoft has really not gone out of its way to try to really grow the xbox360 "today" as a platform?

Many may say why do that? The xbox one is out.

That Microsoft is more interested in really only supporting the xbox one and not the xbox360.

One only has to look at Sony and Nintendo on how they support their legacy systems..

The PSVita may not be selling that well but Sony is still getting new digital release games for the system evry month world wide. It may not be their own developed games , but its still new games..just like with the PS3 also digital new releases.

Nintendo with its WiiU..may not have great sales..but does get new games to release frequently.

Microsoft's not really doing such for the xbox360 world wide like nintendo and Sony do so for thrir legacy systems.

Once again Microsoft has shown to be really a one console company at a time..and really only concerned for for a few select markets.

Now some may say how does that help me..I. in the USA I really do not care about support in india for the xbox..as a platform you right tomlook at is does this cater to "me" as a consumer. But the underpinning problem..If Microsoft's own views are the same which they have shown to pretty much be..their Actions shpw they are not as international with their brand for its market to grow as Sony and Nintendo is..until that changes..Microsoft's position is ost likelihood never going to change..

Many may think is if "Microsoft can just win the north americam market" and a few that can change the whole dynsmic of their position in the market..and that is just not the case.

You raise some good points here. But the fact remains MS stopped taking about sales when they started to lose NPDS. Before this they really did focus on it. The US and UK are key markets for them. If they cant compete here long term then the console side of MS could die. Yes it's a change in direction, i.e focusing on thr ecosystem but what's driving this seems to be the lack of competitiveness on the console front. Active users are hours played is not a measure that's sustainable for any platform. Oh I enjoy enjoy these different perspectives and views without an having an online rant ... so thanks for the civil replies :)

hopefully we'll finally get decent psplus titles since they are raking in the cash... been waiting for a while. Microsoft totally screwed up their marketing plan for the x1 thanks to Mattrick. Atleast they are both still selling well so console gaming continues.

I keep seeing some people saying things like "if NX gets 3rd party support it could hurt the PS4". That's ridiculous, Nintendo can't get enough 3rd party support even if they begged for it, no one trusts them and no one likes working with them.

Its their own fault for their digital only vision as well as all the other things they did before its launch. People arent stupid enough to let that slide.. Yeah, the did a 180 with all the changes but the fact they even tried doing it, speaks volumes about where they're trying to take gaming..

I want xb1 some day but until they make a slim model & a few more games i want release with good critical appraise, im not interested.. I usually buy every system too.. I have a wii u with like 10+ games that are fantastic.. If i bought xb1, i'd probably just have 2

I've also never seen a game console get bundled so much so fast and have it's price cut so fast like the Xbone since it's release. PS4 usually was standalone with a few bundles here and there and the price only dropped 1 time. Xbone STILL couldn't catch up.
