PlayStation 4 outsells Xbox One in March

PlayStation 4 was the top-selling new gaming console at United States retailers last month, according to data from industry-tracking firm The NPD Group that Sony Interactive Entertainment provided to GamesBeat. PS4 has outsold the competition for 13 of the last 15 months. The Xbox One came out on top in April and October in 2015, and it continues to sell well — but Sony has all of the momentum. Nintendo’s Wii U, meanwhile, is likely on the way out as the company shifts to mobile gaming and its new codenamed NX dedicated hardware to try to find new revenues in the $99.3 billion gaming business.

Did you forget the Xbox One's price was cut in March?

Congratulations to Sony, can't wait to see the sales next month with Ratchet & Clank releasing and being critically acclaimed

butchertroll2934d ago

Xone is at 299$ since beginning of February at Amazon.

And also there is a promotion for Xone ( 100$ PS3/X360 trade-in ) at Gamestop since March 21 and it will end till end of April

not even a price cut could do anything.
This gen turned into humiliation..

solideagle2933d ago

“In March, global hours spent gaming on Xbox One increased 89 percent compared to last year. Xbox Live engagement was driven by the greatest games lineup, including new titles released in March like ‘Killer Instinct: Season 3’ and ‘Tom Clancy’s The Division.’ ‘Killer Instinct: Season 3’ has seen record engagement across Xbox One and Windows 10 since it launched on March 29, making March the best month ever for the franchise with more than 6 million unique players.Last week, on April 5, we launched ‘Quantum Break’ to critical acclaim and it became the best-selling Xbox game around the world, and is now the biggest-selling new Microsoft Studios published IP this generation. We can’t thank our fans enough for their continued support and we’re looking forward to bringing more unprecedented experiences on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Xbox Live later this year.”

PS4 total domination on the xbone throughout the whole gen

n4g00062933d ago

"PS4K" has little effect on original PS4 sales.
SONY could make $599 PS4K and the original PS4 would still sell so well.

solideagle2933d ago

Oh my I got so many disagrees for just quoting Xbox Bosses comments on March NPD 2016. people wanted to know MS spin on numbers and I just read it and posted it...that's it

Cindy-rella2934d ago

Ps4 won two years of sales now due to it winning 24 months. I really see the ps4 continue this trend even when the Nintendo nx is out. The nx might win its first two or three months but the ps4 will consistently outsell everything after. Why would anyone especially core gamers believe in the new Nintendo nx after the wii and big failure the wii u?

DarXyde2934d ago

Cindy-rella,

"Why would anyone especially core gamers believe in the new Nintendo nx after the wii and big failure the wii u?"

Because the guy whose vision for Nintendo involved moving into a more accessible space for all has passed away and, as such, from here on out, there's new leadership?

Microsoft changed a lot after Mattrick and even Sony is different without Tretton.

The Wii U, though a decent console, just wasn't what people wanted. The new leadership seems to really have a good handle on what gamers want. So to answer that, I would believe in the NX. I do believe in the NX.

UltraNova2933d ago

"The Wii U, though a decent console, just wasn't what people wanted. The new leadership seems to really have a good handle on what gamers want. So to answer that, I would believe in the NX. I do believe in the NX."

Are mobile games what you want from Nintendo? Because they seem hell bent on catering to that market.

Personally what I want is the next N64, equal or more power than current competitors, full Nintendo 1st party support, full 3rd party support and their usual dose on console gaming innovation(controller/portable console hybrid or VR?).

If they finally decide to check those boxes I swear I'll camp outside my local games shop 2 days before release.

bouzebbal2933d ago (Edited 2933d ago )

@Cindy-rella:

I don't get it how you can post something so immature. You obviously don't know the history of Nintendo consoles especially since N64 focusing heavily on 1st party games which sell like hot cakes.

Nintendo has its core fans like myself. I always buy their consoles because i love their magic touch and the attention to detail they give their games.
Wii U was a flop 3rd party wise, but delivered as always on the 1st party side.

ninjazfistz2933d ago

@Cindy-rella:

We have to see the Nx specs and info before we cast it off as only winning the first 2 months from ps4. If:

1)Nintendo returns to a powerful system
2)Uses a PC architecture for 3rd party support
3)Keeps online multiplayer free

They will be a very serious threat

Good job Sony and MS for both still moving up while poor Nintendo is sadly unappreciated.

I won't lie, I backed the wrong horse this time around. I only have the wiiu and while the games that been releasing for it are fun and entertaining I can't help think that they had a big missed opportunity with the hardcore crowd.

Personally i just haven't gotten around to getting the XB1 and PS4 and i usually do end up getting all the systems within a generation.

I like to be optimistic and say I will this year and there may be a chance that both will release cheaper versions later in the coming months so the optimism is still there.

Ruggadagod2934d ago (Edited 2934d ago )

Nintendo got what was coming to them how are they unappreciated? The Wii U does so many things wrong that the XB1 and PS4 do right.

jb2272934d ago

I think the only thing that Nintendo is missing is third party support. People talk about gimmicks & poor networks & all of this stuff, but if the Wii U came out decently powered to run third parties, we'd be having a different conversations right now...We might be looking at a similar lineup in terms of placing, but the numbers would be much closer.

It seems so simple & yet so difficult for someone at Nintendo, release a decently powered box, get third party support & maybe a slightly better network & we will be back to a 3 horse race.

Although that said, gaming in general has never supported a 3 horse race to my knowledge. It's always been 2 w/ a distant 3rd, aside from last gen maybe, but that was a strange one.

Mr_Writer852933d ago

@JB

The WiiU decently powered?

LOL

Yeah to run slightly better PS3 & 360 games.

The WiiU is massively underpowered compared to X1 and PS4. That's another reason it got left for dust.

UltraNova2933d ago

@jb & Mr_writer

Nintendo target's younger demographic and their moms/grandmas which means limited spending budget which in turn forces big N to release cheap consoles aka under-powered.

So as long as they plan to stick catering to the aforementioned demographic, core/mature gamers will continue to ignore them.

jb2272933d ago

@mrwriter

You completely mis read what I wrote....the IF is key...as in, the Wii U wasn't decently powered, but IF it was, we'd be having a different conversation.

This is just pure slaughter now.

GribbleGrunger2934d ago (Edited 2934d ago )

Here are the estimated numbers:

PS4: 330,100
XB1: 241,500
WIU: 66,200

Not mine, I'm useless at maths.

Overload2933d ago (Edited 2933d ago )

Almost 100k PS4 lead with the Xbox price cut.

https://media3.giphy.com/me...

GribbleGrunger2933d ago

Actually they're the real numbers :)

Overload2933d ago (Edited 2933d ago )

Not one month in 2016 hasn't even been close.

darthv722933d ago

@overlord "Almost 100k..."

Based on those number Gribb stated it is almost 90k (88k+ actually).

Unspoken2933d ago

Only a 90k lead? How is the Xbox doing that well? I thought Microsoft wasn't selling at all. Good job MS.

* I care about games. I own a Wii U & XB1, and Wii U has by far the more fun overall first party games. Even more so than PS4 ( although that will eventually change over time with more games coming to PS4)

* I'm missing out on a ton of awesome games on the PS4 though and I'll probably eventually get one unless some of those come to the NX.

* I am most excited for the NX though by far. Wii U is good for what it is, but was never going to be able to compete with the PS4 and it's 3rd party support.

* I don't know if NX will sell better than the PS4, but I do know it will sell better than the Wii U and to me that is all that matters.....that the NX is better than Wii U.

* PS4 didn't have to be better than XB1 or Wii U....it just had to be better than the PS4 and it is.

* They are all worth owning, as are the 3DS & Vita & PC as well.

TheSaint2933d ago

Is this even news by this point?

badz1492933d ago

It is as much a news as the Xbone selling 300 units per week in Japan!

bennissimo2933d ago

Who cares? So long as both consoles do well, gamers win.

2933d ago
jojo3192933d ago (Edited 2933d ago )

That's not how this site operates. Nobody ever looks at the fact that both consoles are selling well and making money. To fanboys on both sides, all that matters is "winning". If people were smart, they would WANT both consoles to be neck and neck. Then both companies would be forced to innovate to gain the upper hand. Why people desire a monopoly for their system is beyond me. It would result in higher priced consoles with less features. If you're going to disagree, I would love to hear the argument for a "one console world".

bennissimo2933d ago

Exactly. Which is why ruegeaL is acting like an idiot.

no need for monthly articles anymore. the one month xbox one won was october and that was by 30k and still lost world wide

this gen belongs to sony like ps1 and ps2. last gen xbox360 got a head start and was up by 6-7 million yet from day one till today ps3 outsold xbox360 world wide

if it wasn't for RROD i doubt xbox 360's numbers would even be closer to ps3. for a long time ms simply denied that rrod was an issues

playstation is a world wide brand while xbox is an american brand

it would take a huge mess up on sony's behalf for ms to ever gain ground on another playstation home console. i just don't see that happening so like nintendo, ms is destined to be #2 when it comes to home consoles

chrisx2933d ago

PS doing its usual buisness whooping xbone's ass. Move on folks, move on

Muzikguy2933d ago

I'm really not surprised by this. Good for Sony, they deserve it IMO. Microsoft keeps slashing the price of their console and STILL can't outsell the PS4. With PSVR coming I can see this continuing for sure.

One thing that has been really getting to me this gen is how every place that sells video games has the same amount of space or more for the X1. That's annoying and frustrating when PS4 has sold more and has more games for it. I've been trying to be a "Good Samaritan" and buy local, but that crap is making me think of buying all my games from Amazon

MAULxx2933d ago

I've about fully given up on brick and mortar stores now.
I buy blu ray movies & as far as that goes I buy online.
I will buy a game occasionally at a store if I happen to be going that way anyway. IDK about everywhere else but at my local stores, blu ray movie sections are slowly shrinking. I usually buy games on amazon, release day delivery is nice along with the prime benefits.
I wish there was a store nearby totally focused on media.

Muzikguy2933d ago

That's the thing. I really don't want to give up on them stores because I know we all need jobs. They're really doing it to themselves though. I too wish a store was fully focused on media. It would be nice to see a bigger selection of games that have been released available to purchase. Or even there just to look at! Best Buy is trying to be a contender in the market yet there selection is beyond ridiculous. Same with Walmart, the largest chain in the world too (makes no sense to me). Even the new games at GameStop have shrunk. I've been staying with the brick and mortars for all this time and I'd hate to do it, but I can see me just saying screw it and buying from Amazon

rainslacker2933d ago

The big three pay for that shelf space, so they're going to be given whatever the companies pay to have it there. If the companies don't pay, they'll be lucky to get one or two wall sections or a center aisle type shelf unless a system is particularly popular in a region, in which case, the stores may show more of the product to keep customers coming in and hopefully get more sales.

Muzikguy2933d ago

Yeah, I know they pay for it. That's why the shelf space always favors Microsoft. You'd think if you were running a business that you'd want the popular stuff out there and a wider selection than your competitors. These guys do the opposite and wonder why people shop online. Best Buy has been bogus with what they allocate to games and even GameStop has. I obviously don't run either company but I think they're thinking is flawed. I want to see a wall of games. Tons of selection. I'm not going into Best Buy looking for coffe pots and microwaves 😏️

That's just one example but that store wants to sell everything under the sun instead of specializing in areas. I always find it funny when I know more than the associates

rainslacker2933d ago

My local BB and GS have more space allocated for PS than for Xbox. Kind of the opposite of last gen really. I remember when they were doing the reset at GS, and at first, it was more space for Xbox(leaving Xbox with a couple more shelf sections), but now PS has practically half the store with PS3 and PS4 being roughly equal, and a pretty decent sized Vita/PSP section.

While companies do pay for shelf space, they probably aren't going to pay more than what they feel it's worth compared to the customer base of a region....and I suppose in my particular region, PS has just been more popular. This area has a ton of development studios, and is a pretty technical area being the east coasts silicon valley of sorts, so maybe the more powerful PS4 just became more popular here this gen.

Grats and well deserved. Wonder if Sony will be able to outsell it every month.

Only thing I can see knocking it off the #1 spot would be NX

TomShoe2934d ago

NX probaby will, most release consoles sell gangbusters.

Thatguy-3102934d ago

Doubt it. A Nintendo console can't compete with a Playstation unless they intruce a gimmick that hooks the casuals which I doubt will happen again.

kneon2934d ago

The Wii U sold well at first as the core Nintendo fan base rushed out to buy it, but unfortunately for Nintendo there just aren't that many fans left.

It's possible the same could happen again with the NX, but it will need some big games up front, not promises of games years in the future.

But even if it starts well I don't see how they are going to grow their fan base. The Wii gen forged a reputation of Nintendo being the console of choice for kids and grandmas. I don't know if they have what it takes to change that perception.

GamingIVfun2934d ago

The Wii was a fluke, pushed by a good ad campaign that got the attention of house wives and casual gamer's. That, and the controlled shortages that I myself fell for. Had a few good first party games and little third support, just like Wii U. People learned their lesson. Hope Nintendo have with the NX.

I have a Wii U along with everything else, just not my preferred console. All the consoles have something that the die hard gamer's can find to like, me included, but not always enough for the mass market though.

UltraNova2933d ago

Don't underestimate Nintendo old time fans. If they release an equally or better speced console with a decent controller and have 3rd party support I can guarantee you that they will make a huge dent on PlayStation's domination. I would buy that Nintendo console day 1.

This is coming from a Playstation fan, btw.

Overload2934d ago

The Xbox price cut did nothing. The PS4 is going to sweep this year.

G20WLY2934d ago

With Ratchet just releasing, followed by Uncharted 4 (and not even factoring in the likes of Shadow of the Beast and Alienation), PS4 is getting ever stronger and will only continue to build momentum, surely.

S2Killinit2933d ago

With PS4's game line up this year, buying a PS4 just makes sense.

Herbalistic2934d ago

The PS4 continues to come out on top even with Xbox having price drops and other cheap bundles

FoxyGotGame2933d ago

Yeah PS4 is unstoppable, but I'm still enjoying both regardless of the Gulf the size of the Middle East /
