Has this console generation been a let down?

In this episode of The Analog Circle Podcast we will be discussing the latest NX rumors,what Phil Spencer said about this years E3 event and talking about some hidden extra features that were found in the Playstation 3.50 update.We will be going over the answers given from the N4G community for last weeks question,and asking the question has this console generation been a let down so far?

This generation has been amazing on the Xbox One with Forza Horizon 2, Forza 6, Titanfall, Gears of War UE, Halo MCC, Halo 5, Quantum Break, Rare Replay, Sunset Overdrive, Ori and the Blind Forest, backward compatibility with Xbox 360 games, awesome games with gold, top notch online multiplayer, external hard drives, etc.!

There has been some great games for sure but maybe it's the nostalgia clouding my memory, but I seem to recall having a lot more fun with 360/PS3 two to three years in their console life cycle.

* It has been ok. There have been some bright spots, but not enough originality and too much copying other ideas.

* I'd like to see some more appealing art styles as well rather than just everybody going for realism.

* 3-4 years after a "realistic" game releases, it doesn't look that real.

* 5-10 years after a game with an appealing colorful art style releases = still pleasing to look at.

I stay positive with the games as I still enjoy a ton of them but it's a bit disappointing overall as I expected better.

I'll say the genre diversity has been much better, not dominated so much by FPS like last gen. Plus if you like Japanese games, then it's a good gaming gen since we're getting localization of stuff we wouldn't normally get or at least Asia-English versions. The PS4 has been good to me so far, I'm trying to spread out my purchases so I don't spend too much money and give myself time to finish by backlog.

To be honest the exclusives on PS4 have been a let down so far. But UC4 and Horizon zero down look amazing.

I feel the xbox one has the best exclusives right now. Halo 5 multiplayer cant be touched!

thatr's why there is a lot of interest in nintendo's nx system and all the vr hoopla. plus ar and hololens.

this generation is the same old same old so far. nothing exciting really. both the ps4 and xbox one are not huge upgrades from the previous generation and most of the games seem very familiar so far.

Not at all; I've been quite satisfied with the games I've gotten on Wii U, PS3, and 3DS.

To say I've been disappointed would be a drastic over-statement.
Heck, there are games from two years back that I STILL go back to every once in a while because they're just that much damned fun.

If anything's been a disappointment this gen, it's been the journalists, and the fanboys.

The journalists for all of their sensationalist click-bait and over-hyping, and the fanboys of certain game makers [yes, including third party game makers] for trying to use sales charts, popularity, and other factors to justify their belief that some companies should just quit making consoles/games.

This generation has been a let down to me because there have have been only one or 2 generation defining games like The Witcher 3 and possibly uncharted 4. Not saying there aren't any good games but I want games I am unable to experience on a PS3 or Xbox 360. Fallout 4 is great but it's more of a retread of fallout 3 than a genre defining expirence like fallout 3 and skyrim were. 3 years in I'm like where are the games we are promised . No mans sky looks promising , cyberpunk 2077 (can't wait).

This generation has been a big let down for me and the direction it's going in is something I don't like.

The consoles are lacking a future proof status in less than three years and common cries of games struggling with todays standards of what a PC can offer.

You also have season passes which I hate with a passion so time will tell if we see change or more of the same.

To me it has. I really haven't been wowed like I was with the PS3/360 generation. I remember being blown away early with Gears, Bioshock, Uncharted, God of War, etc. I have yet to have that type of moment this generation but I am hoping something will do that soon enough. We are approaching just 2 1/2 years into the lifespan of the Xbox One and PS4 so there's still plenty of time to deliver the goods. Overall, I feel this gen has been good, not great.

Nope! Bloodborne, ori and the blind forrest and Captain toad are three games that have blown me away this gen. Absolutely fantastic games! Sunset overdrive was a real joy to play. Infamous ss was stunning and great to play. The witcher had such an amazing world and the character building was excellent! The order 1886 held its own in the linear tps genre with top notch visuals, sound and gun play. Mario Maker is everyones dream come true and Mario 3D world was so much fun. There are tonnes of other games that I haven't mentioned. I've had a blast this gen so far! And look at what's coming! Ff15, FF7R, horizon zero dawn, uncharted 4, the last guardian, gears of war, detroit and so much more. Let's not forget about the new upcoming vr devices with some really cool looking stuff. This gen has been awesome. If people wanna cherry pick the bad just to validate the fun they had on last consoles, go ahead, but there are tonnes of great games that are so much fun with a lot of variety. I'll keep enjoying them.

This generation and last generation is a bit of blur on PC, but the new consoles were needed to keep up with new engines. All the new consoles hd port re releases feel like PC versions of last gen console games to me, but then again games like witcher 3, bloodborne and fallout 4 have been great.

Its been ok, but I still feel this Gen is only a bridge to fill in the gap before we get the true consoles we are meant to get in the first place. So far I am happy yet I can feel this Gen will get old very soon. After this year and maybe next years of games. I will be looking at the hopes of new systems. The systems are doing ok for now, but really I can feel it wont be long before I/we are looking at these company's for more.

It's been a let down for me most games have been massively disappointing or broken. Only stand outs so far would be Witcher 3, bloodborne and PvsZ GW series.

As a MP gamer I cant help but feel let down with the mediocre MP games we are getting recently, Overwatch hopefully signals a change for that and with Titanfall 2 and BF5 coming it should improve this year.

This gen is great on PC! ...as far as consoles, I barely touch my PS4, yet I still get a lot of use out of my Wii U. And Xbox One is literally the first console I have not purchased since the 80s.

Same here about the One. I'm not flooded with cash but there have been a couple times I had enough to get one if I wanted. Every time I look at the catalogue and just sigh. A great system but, having a PS4, there's not a single thing on there that tempts me to pull the trigger.

My PS4, Wii U, 3DS, and even my Vita get a ton of playing time though.

For exclusives and indies its been great, but for AAA blockbuster staple games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Need For Speed, etc, its been a sham. All our favorite big name games from last gen have turned to garbage. Plus the greed in the industry has increased with unfinished games, $60 season passes, and micro-transactions.

My PS4 has been a bit of a let down to me. I feel like Sony hasn't released any really notable exclusive for the PS4 besides Bloodborne (which I own, but admittedly still have to play) and now Ratchet & Clank. But I will play Bloodborne soon, and Uncharted 4 as well. Still, I feel like Sony has took his sweet time with the exclusives; you could argue they're only getting started this year, more than 2 years after the system's launch.

Wii U, on the other hand, has given me a lot of superb games to play since release. It's had its dry patches, but they were always followed by periods were Nintendo only released awesome exclusives one after another, so they sort of even out.

So I was a console gamer ever since the N64, And this gen imo has been a let down to people of my generation. From the lack of campaign in games, To the normalization of games that only offer 30% of their value initially forcing you to buy dlc to complete them fully. It has forced me to sell my current gen consoles and play my older games again & to build a gaming pc to allow me to utilize gaming and every day needs when theirs no games I feel are worthy of playing. I cant wait for the day when real games like crash, spyro, socom and banjo to come back even halo isnt the same anymore,, And I have master chief tattooed on me so that's saying a lot.. I was initially excited when i brought my ps4 and xbone home, lets just say I was more excited to get rid of them..

Been blown away at all the great games I have on Wii U with more to come like Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Zelda. My PS4 is still a bit slow. Thankfully that changes next month with TMNT and then after that Grand Kingdom and Odin Sphere HD gravity Rush 2 and KOF14. I can say I have enjoyed it but overall in the grand picture. It has been the worst generation for consoles I have ever seen and I have seen them all.

The only let down for me, is not having enough hard drive space on my PS4 to fit all these awesome games. Looking forward to the future too with titles like, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End,DOOM, Shadow of the Beast, No Man's Sky, Dishonored 2, Gravity Rush 2, Mafia 3, Ni-Oh, Rise of the Tomb Raider (PS4), Shadow Warrior 2, Tekken 7 and The Witcher III: Blood & Wine expansion. And those are all just 2016 releases.

PS4's been a let down so far.

Knack is very average. There is a challenge there but it's still an average game.

Killzone Shadow Fall didn't get reviews as good as the PS3 games.

The Order 1886 is a series of pretty cut scenes followed by arcade gallery type shooting. The shooting is actually quite taxing, throwing waves of enemies, but it's a shame that the game is so flatly structured.

Bloodborne is not to everyone's tastes (although those who do like that genre love it).

Until Dawn did not live up to its promise for me because of the plot twist. The game should have stuck more to teens trapped in a cabin, imagining what was out there, and woodland based horror, rather than putting you in to generically scary locations e.g. an asylum, a mine, for so long.

Sony don't invest in platform games that I personally like. Reliant on Ratchet and Clank, what if I personally don't like that series? I want something more in the classic mould of Banjo Kazooie - castles, woods etc. Yooka-Laylee will hopefully satisfy that a bit.

Greatness still awaits- Detroit by Quantic Dream, Uncharted 4, Doom 4, Dishonored 2, the rest of Hitman's episodes, The Last Guardian are what I am looking forward to. I should buy GTA5 too- it looks far more interesting as a game to just play around in than GTA4.

It's a shame to possibly not have a Motorstorm on PS4- Sony could have got Evolution Studios to make a PS4 version of Arctic Edge but they didn't. I'd love Unkarted though.

It's been a let down to me there are very few games I play this Gen I own 3 Xbox One Games and 4 PS4 and 4 Wii U. I am hope the Nintendo NX will be what i'm looking for this gen ... I will be willing to trade in my Xbox One and PS4 for a Nintendo NX but it better live up to the Hype. Nintendo don't disappoint me !!
