Quantum Break Developers Praise Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Thank Naughty Dog for Raising the Bar

There are times in which our favorite developers teach us important lessons, and this is one of those times. Today new footage and previews for Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End hit the internet, and the folks at Quantum Break’s (which is releasing tomorrow) studio Remedy Entertainment are impressed.

I think they've both raised the bar. I mean I know you're going to disagree based on your comments all over QB articles, but both are at the top of the game.

-Foxtrot2619d ago

How? I'm not bashing Quantum Break, it looks good but they had to use crappy Live action stuff to tell a story. Yet here's ND using general motion capturing to tell their story with in game cutscenes and interactions through the gameplay.

ThePope2619d ago

@Foxtrot

"it looks good but they had to use crappy Live action stuff to tell a story"

IS it crappy? Not from the vast majority of reviews. Some equate the action/acting/production values to the best shows on TV. So I think crappy is far from accurate.

They didn't have to use live action anything. They chose to try a new approach. Again from the reviews it fleshes out the characters in a way that's not seen in games today. Even the villains!

On the technical side of things while the game renders at 720p some of the things they do with lighting and the time stuff looks absolutely stunning. Could they have pulled back on immersion with things like volumetric lighting and done a traditional corridor shooter ala UC. Yeah they could have taken the easy route to appease the fanboys. But they didn't and kudos to them. They could have made a sequel to Alan Wake but instead did a new IP which is hard.

2619d ago
Sunny_D2619d ago

Traditional shooter aka UC.

You say that on the very same day that showcases the openness of U4's gameplay and locations. Lol

ThePope2619d ago

@Big

Hahaha haters going to hate.

@Sunny

I've not played that game yet. So 18 min of gameplay doesn't tell me all I need to know. I have played the other 3 multiple times each and, while amazing, they are a traditional 3rd person shooter. Sorry if that makes you mad. Its ok that UC is that.

lastking952619d ago

@big finger "oh really"
http://youtu.be/bcKMlpkgO0A...

Both devs deserve top respect.

@foxtrot you should look up some gameplay or read a few reviews.

Khaotic2619d ago

@foxtrot you act like remedy couldn't do the same, they were trying something different with live action. And it's not even bad. The people that I have talked to say the action is really good. Gamers scream different and innovation and then when it happens they scream this is stupid I want animated cut scenes just like we've always had.

Rute2619d ago (Edited 2619d ago )

@Big Finger

The character modeling from real life actors in QB is definitely the best in industry atm. They went so far that they even took casts of teeth from the actors to create as closely looking replicas as possible. Some of the scenes with the digital doubles are really close to photorealism.

Digital Foundry has an informative new video of the tech behind QB: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Quote from the video description: "Remedy's Quantum Break possesses a level of rendering technology that is supremely impressive. This game is doing things we've not seen in a mainstream title before. John reveals all."

AngelicIceDiamond2619d ago

Glad remedy gives respects to a top notch dev in the industry today.

@Fox still talkin crap about a game you never played even though majority of the reviews liked the live action. But of course ignore those scores as hard as you possibly can focus on the handful of bad ones and take their word for everything.

The immaturity is impeccable.

I wanna play it myself I don't wanna go off strictly what people are scoring it though.

Blaze9292619d ago (Edited 2619d ago )

@-Foxtrot you should probably, you know, play it - that might help you understand.

We gonna completely ignore the time mechanics and powers that this game brings to a third person shooter? I thought those powers and uses (on Hard mode) were actually quite unique and changed up the game a bit - especially when the time breaks happen and everyone but the player and special suit enemies freeze (but still alive)

yes, I'v played - and beaten - the game. To each its own but to say they didnt raise the bar in ANY way - cut it out.

Utalkin2me2619d ago (Edited 2619d ago )

@ThePope

And QB is not at the top of its game as you state either, based on reviews. Over half of reviews within the 70's or lower. While it's not probably crap. It honestly cant even be mentioned in the same breathe as UC.

And BTW, having live action cut scenes is nothing new. This has been done decades ago. So for the people saying its new, give me a break. Just shows your age is all.

Overload2619d ago (Edited 2619d ago )

Quantum Break looks nice, but you won't see references to the PS2 coming up with Uncharted 4.

"Volumetric lighting: As an integral part of the experience in Alan Wake, we were pleased to see volumetric light shafts return in full force here. Unfortunately, the resolution remains very low leading to very noticeable chunking artefacts visible whenever these effects are on-screen. At times, the resolution is low enough that we're reminded of alpha effects seen in Zone of the Enders 2 running on a PlayStation 2 - a beautiful game to be sure, but one running on ancient hardware."

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

So stop with the comparisons. Not to mention Uncharted 4 native image is 1080p.

Quantum Break is a great looking game, but just leave it at that.

KingofGambling2619d ago

@lastking95
Hahaha, you really used Ironwolf video from youtube to make a point?

ThePope2619d ago

@Overlord

"Quantum Break is a great looking game, but just leave it at that."

I wont leave it at that. As you wont leave any positive news about this game in that light.

From the reviews the graphics, story telling, gameplay, and cut scenes are all top notch. I can pull multiple portions of that article that go on and on about how impressed DF was with the game. They even said they were "nit picking". Is the game perfect no. But stop putting UC on a pedestal. Its a great game no doubt but its not even close to the end all and be of games.

On a side note maybe you should also lay off your never ending quest to bash this game. I've seen you all over the place throwing hate at the game. Its old and pathetic.

DigitalRaptor2619d ago (Edited 2619d ago )

"Some equate the action/acting/production values to the best shows on TV."

Yeah some do. Since when did that excuse the writing which is one of the quintessential properties of a quality TV show.

Looking past the Hollywood talent, and the money they pumped into the show to give it a professional gloss, the Quantum Break live action episodes are B-tier, in almost every regard. You are telling me THAT is what would be praised in television critic circles if it was stand alone TV? That story, and that writing, and those performances? Sam Lake tried to use HBO as a cornerstone for the quality of Quantum Break's live-action and it comes nowhere close. Doesn't even come close to AMC's shows, because it was made to fit in with cliche video game storytelling.

Unless you want to give me specific examples to counter what I'm about to say, Quantum didn't raise the bar for anything but time manipulation mechanics in static and controlled gameplay spaces and even that becomes a repetitive gimmick that won't be influencing other developers. And as others have pointed out, the TV-episode focus was bold but it was still a failure that is not going to be something anyone is wanting to emulate going forward.

Additionally, if you've watched that 18 minute UC4 video and can't tell of all the expanded gameplay features Uncharted 4 has that the other games in the series didn't then you're not even paying attention. It basically demonstrates everything the devs have been saying for months about expansion of the formula and taking influence from their very own The Last of Us.

Overload2619d ago (Edited 2619d ago )

@thepope

If every single thing was top notch about Quantum Break, I'm sure it would be higher than an 78 average.

It's not even the highest rated game this week, Dark Souls 3 is 90 and MLB 16 is at 85.

ThePope2619d ago

@Digital

Have you watched the live action cut scenes for QB?

Genuine-User2619d ago (Edited 2619d ago )

Remedy raised the bar with Max Payne 1 & 2. Alan Wake was good (verging on great), and I'll reserve my judgement for Quantum Break until I play it tomorrow.

That said, Naughty Dog are among the top 3 developers in the business; and my most favorite.

I have grown up with their games.

Sunny_D2619d ago

@lastking

Nice. You compared the multiplayer part of U4 from an unfinished product with bad camera angles to the single player (only mode) of Quantum Break. If that isn't desperate, then I don't know what it is.

PistolsAtDawn2618d ago

Yup both look to raise the bar in terms of Graphics, gameplay...and potentially story-telling. Great time to be a gamer. I'm really looking forward to both.

UC4 looks great like all Uc's have, and QB got MULTIPLE articles from DF talking about what a technical masterpiece it is.

Thatgrammar2618d ago

@Rute- Check out Until Dawn
That is not a fact. I don't think that, "The character modeling from real life actors in QB is definitely the best in industry atm." I believe Until Dawn actually has the best character modeling from real life actors. Again, Until Dawn and not QB.

Kingthrash3602618d ago

What kind of argument is this Quantum break is not on the same level as Uncharted. The graphics alone kills Quantum break and Quantum break is at 720p it's not 720p because it wanted 60 frames its 720P because it wanted to nearly lock 30 frames per second. NEARLY... Uncharted, is 900p 30 frames a second and looks ten times better and is larger than QB.
What bar are we talking about...please tell me.

Fin_The_Human2618d ago

FoxTott please stop the MS hate.

Its getting beyond ridiculous now man.

babadivad2618d ago

Gotta say I am LOVING Quantum Break so far. We'll see how it turns out but it's great so far. Graphics are great as well.

Ceaser98573612618d ago

lastking95

Final Product Vs Unfinished Product try harder son .. I am playing QB atm its great but next time u decide on comparing the two please come back when UC4 releases.. UC4 looks lively and great.. also the comparison was a beta version from the multiplayer of UC4 with the final product from QB.. LOL!

gamer78042618d ago

you will get disagrees, the only games that really get praises for creativity are indie games. Try something risky with an AAA game it will get backlash. I can't wait to play this game today, will be interesting to see sales and what gamers actually think of it.

2618d ago
Lamboomington2618d ago (Edited 2618d ago )

@Big-finger

Yes, they absolutely did raise the bar for graphics. especially lighting and global Illumination. Yes, the game has lots of technical issues on XBOX, but the lighting, the Global Illumination is simply the best I've ever seen.

And before anyone says that Uncharted 4's is the same/better, no it isn't. Uncharted 4 will obviously be the better looking game overall, no doubt, but it's very clear from any gameplay or screenshots that Quantum Break is using some very heavy stuff in terms of lighting.

Like I said, unfortunately, the cost for that on XBONE is a lot of features rendered at lower resolutions, artifacts etc.

During heavy action of timelapse sequences, the lighting is something you just don't see in any other game. It's ridiculously impressive.

GameHead852618d ago

QB ain't nothing like Uncharted.

kraenk122618d ago (Edited 2618d ago )

Tbh Uncharted 3's gameplay was already more advanced than Quantum Break's.

QB's live action scenes are far from on today's TV standard. It's pretty cheap actually..not even talking about the writing.

ShadowKnight2618d ago (Edited 2618d ago )

I still think Remedy raise the bar with Alan Wake. I still think Alan Wake is a better game than Quantum Break IMO

overrated442618d ago

I really wouldn't worry about Foxtrot, he has been on every Quantum Break article complaining about the game. I'm pretty sure his mom wouldn't buy him an Xbox One so now he's angry that other people get to play a game he can't play.

Thatgrammar2618d ago

@Kingthrash360
You are wrong. Uncharted is not 900p 30fps. Uncharted is 1080p at 30fps. The multiplayer, however, is 900p at 60fps. This was added for a smooth and quick multiplayer. You are wrong sir.

It is so romantic, and then leave it to fanboy to ruin it!

babadivad2618d ago (Edited 2618d ago )

I've got to say, after finishing the first act, QB must've cost a FORTUNE! The production value on the live action parts is superb. Even there they hit you with the Matrix style time distortion effects. This game is going to have to sell a TON to recoup the money poured into this title. All that, and I haven't even mentioned what it cost to hire all the well known actors. MS must have a lot of faith Remedy. Can't even imagine what the bottom line was for this.

MasterCornholio2619d ago

That looks intense. I can see why Remedy praises the game.

MasterCornholio2618d ago

@BF

True but why bring that up?

donthate2618d ago

@BF:

Not true!

Imagine what Quantum Break would like like in 1080p. I will take it in 720p. Pixel quality matters!

For you though, a black screen at 4k is better than a beautiful game at 1080p.

xfiles20992619d ago

See people even Remedy knows that Quantum Break is not as good as Uncharted 4 graphically.

game4funz2618d ago

Have we seen the PC version yet?
Im quite curious.

Lamboomington2618d ago

Please don't ruin it, thanks.

kraenk122618d ago

@game4funz

First reports state the PC version doesn't look much better, runs pretty bad in terms of optimisation and has problems like missing features.

Seems MS screws up a lot of their MS store exclusives!

sammarshall1022618d ago

Or maybe they're just humble nice guys

Quantum Break has some of the best visuals ever!

They raised it and then punch the bar so high that others can't keep up.

Erik73572618d ago (Edited 2618d ago )

I love the fact that I get marked for immature/trolling when I'm not and have less bubbles but this guy somehow has more bubbles and does not get marked for trolling when this actually is trolling.

donthate2618d ago

Fries:

This is n4g... aka ps4g.

garrettbobbyferguson2619d ago

Please, this is not raising the bar. This is including features that were done years ago. GTAIV for how overrated it was had NPCs reacting to how you shot them, whether in the legs or chest.

Naughty Dog make great games, but I'm tired of people claiming they're raising the bar constantly. They're not.

Trez12342619d ago

Other devs are claiming they're raising the bar. Tell remedy to stop making those claims :)

jb2272618d ago

Obviously never played an ND game. It's about the entirety of the package & the nuances...in terms of sheer quality, they are absolutely raising the bar. Look at reviews for their last 3 games, look at the multiple directors like J.J. Abrams name checking Uncharted as big inspirations for them, now look at Remedy themselves thanking them for raising the bar.

Unless you are a senior game dev at Rockstar, I'm not sure how your opinion of ND is any more relevant than actual quality devs working in similar areas. How 5 people can agree w/ you is beyond me.

PistolsAtDawn2618d ago (Edited 2618d ago )

I do love ND and they do make amazing games, but at the same time it is true that they are held on too high a pedestal sometimes...so high that people pretend they are perfect...which of course no Dev is.

I can't wait for UC4...looks amazing, but at the same time I can't pretend I don't believe that if for some reason ND became 3rd party and/or somehow became a MS studio...these same people holding them on the pedestal will instantly turn and say ND has lost their touch and MS ruined them.

Fantastic studios, both of them

Erik73572618d ago

I cant stop thinking of James Cameron in South park when I hear "raising the bar"!

I feel like Uncharted 4 is a better game but quantum break has more of a cinematic look to it.

3-4-52618d ago

Never owned a PS console so I've never had a chance to play the uncharted series.

If I ever get a PS4 the first games I'm getting for it are Uncharted collection, Uncharted 4 & No Man's sky.

* As an XB1 owner I can acknowledge that the PS4 just has a better selection of quality games to play.

sammarshall1022618d ago

As a Xbox One owner I think the Xbox One games have been better quality

U can't compare the 2 ...uncharted 4 is above and beyond what quantum break is...it's basically the order.... short with great graphics...

DarkOcelet2619d ago

Did you even play Quantum Break?

DragonDDark2619d ago

I don't think he even played U4 lol

TwoForce2619d ago

I will buy QB when I have time. Right now, my focus is Dark Souls 3. Before someone disagree with me, i would to love to buy both but the money is very important, so people like me need to choose one.

drk_omeg2619d ago

Impresive, 5 disagrees (at this moment) in just 29 minutes for a question. Haters doesn't even know what to desagree with anymore, use your brains guys.

Prubar2619d ago (Edited 2619d ago )

You can't really compare the three lol. Unless your totally biased. Uncharted is at one end of the spectrum and The Order in on the other. Quantum Break is somewhere in the middle. Solely basing off reviews of course. Opinions are another thing.

TwoForce2619d ago

Dude, shut up ! Two games are going to be great.

2619d ago Replies(1)
ninsigma2619d ago

The order was great which means QB will be great too.

Black0ut2618d ago

Exactly. I don't understand the comparisons either, both do their own thing.

PistolsAtDawn2618d ago

This is the kind of statement that lets everyone who isn't biased know not to pay attention to your opinion.
