This is pretty awesome. It'll be interesting to see what impact Playstation VR and Octulus has going forward.
"These images are actually graphics from a video game." Is that not slightly misleading? These visuals are extremely impressive, but this is just a small area zoomed in and probably took a lot of horsepower to render. Try rendering that in real time across a whole environment with moving elements, characters and Ai added in. We are a long, long way away from visuals like this in consumer games.
We not there yet but in time..
While this is all so very impressive, at what point is realism enough? What are they trying to get to? We already have lifelike facial animations (LA Noire) and body motions in games. What more could we possibly need? As far as I'm concerned, what we've got gets the job done for just about any type of storytelling. Graphics have been improving but there have been a seemingly large sacrifice on the gameplay side of these games. Lets not forget why Hollywood can never achieve the one thing that makes games unique. The gameplay and interactivity.
