Doom PS4 Beta Gameplay Frame-Rate Test [Work In Progress]

Digital Foundry:

We've been waiting with bated breath for this one for quite some time! John takes a look at the PS4 version of this highly anticipated reboot.

Have to say I'm really disappointed with it at the moment. First game I've thought about pre-ordering in years. Won't be after playing the beta though. It's still old school fun to an extent & I may still pick it up but I'll need to try the single player first.

Graphics are really poor. The screen tear is the worst I've seen this generation in fact it's so bad I don't remember a game that was worse last generation either. Texture pop in, although it seems it only has to do it once per level, takes ages. It's so shallow, which for a game like this is not massively important but even the weapons. There's maybe 2 decent weapons & the rest are just completely pointless. Even the customisation is padded with so much uselessness just to make numbers up.

Even the music & sound effects are nothing to take note of. COME ON this is DOOM!!

Get your act together. Do not ruin this! It's trying so unbelievable hard to achieve the E-Sports recognition & it's completely ruining the game. If they wanted that they would of been better going down the Quake Arena route & leaving Doom alone.

Lol it's a CLOSED BETA. What were you expecting? For it to run perfectly? That's why it's in beta. It's still got another month before release. Plenty of time for them to fix these issus and for what it's worth this game runs fine. It looks pretty good and runs at a steady frame rate. Also there are not just 2 useful weapons. Each one is uniquely beneficial based on the skill level of the player. Also character customization is padding in any game that has it. You must've been expecting something monumentally revolutionary.

1nsomniac3336d ago (Edited 3336d ago )

How do you figure a month is enough time to fix those issues?

Yes it runs well but that's pointless if you've got an inch thick bar of screen tear going horizontally across the screen. It doesn't feel like Doom in any shape currently apart from the odd pentagram or quad damage. The weapon balance is awful & feel completely pointless especially when comparing them to the original games counterparts.

Customisation is not really my thing anyway but come on do you really need 3+ Exact same helmets just with minute changes in jowl contouring. Or 3+ body armour that are exactly the same but have a very slightly different shaped pocket on one side. Or a shoulder pad that's an inch thicker than the previous one. If you think that's me wanting revolutionary customisation rather than pointing out its really not a necessary addition to anything. Then we definitely have differing outlooks on life.

*There's not even a single door in the entire beta. This is not Doom. The screen tear is during gameplay not in customisation.

The graphics are decent, and the only time I experienced screen tearing was during customization when I would turn my character. Also remember this is a beta, not the full game. Take a chill pill bro.

Yeah, Life is Strange: Limited Edition (back in January) and this are my only preorders this year so I hope they do smooth it out. Although the single player is my reason for preordering.

ReesesPuffs3336d ago

To each their own. I guess we'll have to wait and see how the game runs when it is fully released. Personally the only weapon needed balancing is the super shotgun but the mechanics are in place for you to combo the weapons. Also why would there be doors in the multiplayer. That would slow up the pace of the game and cause a lot of unnecessary deaths. I'd recommend brutal Doom if you don't enjoy this. To each their own.

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

After watching Scavengers Reign? The answer is unequivocally yes. I really want something out of left field but I think people are too afraid to shake things up.

It's what I love about Shadowrun and Black Mirror. Love, Death, and Robots proved that there's an audience for stuff that doesn't fit the mold.

Weird games in general we don't get enough of, we need more games like Katamari and Mr domino, things like that
