The Wii U gets discontinued? A personal take on the matter

There has been plenty of hearsay going on about the Wii U recently. Such as the rumor that Nintendo "might" discontinue the Wii U, and that the Wii U Legend of Zelda game will be released to the NX console instead. So this is my (David Lucas, The Gaming Ground) take on the matter.

Not going to happen for awhile! The Wii U has not even had a price cut yet, since it went from $349 to $299(Deluxe). Plus Nintendo announced Paper Mario. Nintendo is not going to discontinue a console they are still making games for! Derp!

Nintendo stated it is NOT true.

TGG_overlord3335d ago

Not for the last 12 months to come at least, but that´s my opinion on the matter. 299 USD? That´s a lot cheaper than the console price in EU. Well, unless they make the NX console backwards compatible that is.

Actually, Nintendo's statement was a bit more nuanced. They said the production was going to continue for the next quarter and for months after that. So technically, they could end production in December and their statement would still be true.

I don't think they can drop the price of it much further, and that's the problem. They made the system burdened with a really expensive controller that prohibits how low they can drop the price.

I think Nikkei was getting their info from Nintendo suppliers and it's completely possible that there are enough Wii Us in the chain already to last until the NX is fully available. By then, the hard core fans will have moved on.

I think one of the current reasons why the price hasn't dropped is because most of the bundles that are out right now offer 2 free games. That's a $120 value. So essentially, you're paying $179 for the hardware.

It will be discontinued in 2018-19

onemixedgrill3334d ago

It has not had another significant price cut because they (nintendo) probably calculated that it would not move significantly more units, and it would therefor result in that they would take a loss per product. The Wii U is, and since last year has been basically dead (after E3 2015). Paper mario, while it is a mario title, it does not look like a big hit title, and is probably a less expensive game to produce (in comparison to other a-tier nintendo titles).

Whether we like it or not, the Wii U is a failure as a consumer product.

I do wonder if history repeats itself with Twilight Princess being the final Nintendo published Gamecube game, and now The Legend Of Zelda being the final one for Wii U.

TGG_overlord3335d ago

Could be, I thought about that this morning actually. I remember when I used to work in a retail store, people had the same thoughts back then (but with Twilight Princess).

PhoenixUp3335d ago

Are there actually people who think the Wii U will get globally discontinued before the Wii?

TGG_overlord3335d ago

Well, some obviously think like that. However, I don´t think that Nintendo will pull off an SEGA kind of move anytime soon (SEGA left the MD & X32 to dry in the sun while only focusing on the Saturn, which was an HUGE mistake).

PhoenixUp3335d ago

The Genesis/Mega Drive had lived for a full 6 years by the time the Saturn was released. The 32X was an add-on the was going to fail just for the concept for which it stood for. It released after a prior add-on the Sega CD, and right before the 5th gen started. No way it could've succeeded.

It's very unlikely Nintendo is going to discontinue a console that had been on the market for 4 years before a console that has currently been on the market for 10 years.

TGG_overlord3335d ago

Nintendo got the 16-bit market to themselves pretty much, and that was the mistake.

"SEGA’s greatest mistake of the 16-bit era wasn’t a peripheral, nor was it any game or advertising campaign. No, their greatest mistake was how the ended the generation. They launched the SEGA Saturn during a time when the Genesis was still enjoying some significant success."

PhoenixUp3335d ago (Edited 3335d ago )

There was no way the Genesis could've lasted the 4th generation as long. Donkey Kong Country's release in 1994 was the turning point of that generation that cemented SNES's position as the winner. Not to mention that newcomer Sony was launching the PlayStation in 1994 in Japan and the rest of the world in 1995.

What did you expect SEGA to do, wait out the rest of the 4th gen where Nintendo trounces them there while allowing Sony to get a headstart on them in the 5th gen? SEGA really had no choice but to launch the Saturn when it did.

Don't forget that Saturn actually succeeded in outselling PS1 in Japan from 1994 onwards until FFVII released in 1997. The real issue was just stealth launching the Saturn for the western market during E3 and the hardware that wasn't predominantly made for 3D games.

Personally, I´m just going to wait for Nintendo´s official announcement of the NX system (specs, price, games, release date etc). As I want to know their plans for the Wii U in the future.

TGG_overlord3335d ago

Well, that´s what most of us are waiting for right now. As I have no wish to throw my money down the drain...

GordonKnight3335d ago (Edited 3335d ago )

@TGG

I don't understand your comment about no wish to throw your money down the drain...

@GordonKnight
I don´t own a Wii U right now, and "if" the NX console will be able to play Wii U games. Then I might skip the Wii U and buy a NX console instead.

GordonKnight3335d ago

You have waited over 3 years. Another 6 month should be a brees. I think the NX will be backwards compatible, but with only digital.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3333d ago

and when it's not. You wasted you time waiting instead of putting up with it and buy one and be a real gamer for once.

quent3335d ago

I just hope the NX(SNES2) will still be more a traditional console and not too much digital/mobile focused.
