It's time for Microsoft to reintroduce Kinect 2 on Xbox One for 2017

TheKingslayer.com Editorial: With Nintendo releasing the NX console, and Sony preparing Virtual Reality for sale on the PS4. It is now time for Microsoft to reintroduce Kinect 2. With Occulus Rift offering the optional use of it on PC titles, with Windows 10 establishing a holistic device experience. The Kinect 2 is a great way for Microsoft to have something new, affordable, and relative to where gaming is going with different ways for gamers to play. The fact that Playstation 4 VR is bringing back both cameras and motion controls. It makes sense with cloud gaming set to appear this summer on Xbox One with Crackdown 3. Microsoft can prepare gamers for full motion control gaming and VR in 2017 by reestablishing Kinect 2 on the platform.

No just no...

I wish that all of them would stop fooling with motion controls, VR, and AR

Kingthrash3602976d ago

Yeah please let the kinect just die.
As for vr and ar...I say give it a chance. We gave the kinect it's chance so vr and ar should have a run too.
But the kinect. ..no we know what it has what it is and what it does and most don't care for it.

Unspoken2976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

The Kinect was a fine device. Kinect 2 did not have the dev support and on top was attached to the console to mitigate that fact, ironically.

Kinect needed to continue to be sold separately from the beginning and at least supported in the OS for the long haul not to mention it needed a small but strong library of first party titles to increase attach rate.

What they could have done was added support for it into Windows as an option so people who plugged their PC into their TV could have navigated Windows 8 with motion/voice controls.

They really dropped the ball on the potential here. Well, not all is lost as Hololens took its place.

t-hall7852976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

Ok but let the pseye live lol . I say he has a point. Imagine crackdown 3 using vr if at all possible. Kinect is way more functional than its ps4 counterpart.
Still use my kinect daily.

nitus102976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

As motion and sound detectors go the Kinect is more elaborate and more expensive than the PSCamera, however the PSCamera is cheaper and is required for motion tracking for the PSVR while the Kinect is now an optional device unless you wish to play Kinect games.

Having "Yourself as a controller" to quote Microsoft PR sounds interesting until you really think about it. At least with a controller you do have force feedback and can imitate quite complex commands with button presses.

Voice commands are supported by both the PS4 and XB1 providing you have a headset and microphone which actually come with the console.

Kinect is one accessory that will nvr see the light of day on my X1.

t-hall7852976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

@cloud funny thing is is that I have them both. I call a spade a spade. Kinect runs circles around the ps4 camera. Someone mentioned they both have voice commands. Lol the kinects voice commands are integrated into just about every app and I don't need a headset or even a controller for that matter to operate it. With the ps4, you have to have a headset on and it only works on the main screen. Useless.
Before all this vr craze, the ps4 camera wasn't even relevant. Now all of a sudden it sh!ts on kinect smh.
Whatever happened to all the privacy invasion talk. "Its watching you while you sleep" talk. Now its ok to have a camera all of a sudden...

Ahmay2976d ago

@t-hall785. I don't own a Kinect or xbox. but I can agree its better compared to ps camera.. but voice command on ps does not require for both camera and headset.. each can do voice command on its own. :)

IamTylerDurden12976d ago

You will see a downgrade in performance if Kinect comes back.

donthate2975d ago

I would love for more Kinect support, as I use it every day for my Xbox Fitness and voice control. Kind of neat in Alien: Isolation, and weapon switching in Mass Effect 3 was awesome.

But I don't think MS is going to bring it back, at least as a gaming device. Unfortunately, it just didn't have the developer and consumer support it needed to be big. Kinect coupled with VR/AR would be awesome!

nX2976d ago

Agree with AR, it has almost no use in gaming. Motion controls >could< be of great use in games but we've yet to see anything amazing with it.

VR on the other hand is perfect for immersive gaming and I'm glad that so many companies are pushing it at the moment.

sammarshall1022976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

I think the concept of VR is great but the tech isn't there for great games yet

A lot of VR games look like Kinect games

I have a feeling that the early reports of nausea will be the downfall of VR. Who wants to get sick after using a headset for 20 minutes

DigitalRaptor2976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

@ sammarshall102

You sure, or are you just guessing? Cause that's what it sounds like. There's already plenty of great experiences out there. A lot of them aren't traditional games, but the positive previews speak for themselves in that regard.

I completely disagree about comparing them to Kinect games too. Until you put the headset on and experience a completely different perspective, you cannot say that these VR games look like Kinect games. Games look different in a 3D space than they do if you are watching a compressed YouTube video of the game on your 2D screen. VR also offers 1:1 control so definitely not the Kinect game experience.

kaizokuspy2976d ago

I don't know much about AR, but I'd love to see an civ revolution or a magic the gathering run on it. That be worth a buy, either on ar or vr. I'm not picky. My body is ready for the next step in gaming

IceKoldKilla2976d ago

@sammarshall102 So you haven't used it yet... OK, you can't say anything. I tried it and man is it unbelievable! Oh and pre-orders keep selling out.

donthate2975d ago

You do know that VR is a subset of AR, right?

That is AR with FOV entirely covered in holograms is VR i.e AR is actually more flexible.

vegasgamerdawg2976d ago

MS already has Kinect 2.0, it's called Windows Holographic aka. AR. Same technology is used, look it up. They renamed it, that's all.

IceKoldKilla2976d ago

No. The Kinect on Xbox One is Kinect 2.0 already. Do your research.

Volkama2976d ago

It's true, Kinect and Hololens are the same thing. Strap a Kinect to your face if you don't believe me, there will be holograms all over your room. You just won't see them cos it isn't transparent.

_-EDMIX-_2976d ago

That would be stupid to not continue working on motion, VR, AR exedra.

But I think it's complete suicide to try to rush kinect 2 just to gain some sort of attention this is not about a popularity contest it's about creating the best product and I don't believe they could do that in such a short amount of time just to have a response to PS VR.

They had many opportunities for it to become a thing and if it's not materialize and then need to move on and work on Hololens becoming something.

GHOSTxx4202976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

Yea i dont care for vr yet either, atleast i havnt had anything WOW me yet.

Utalkin2me2976d ago

Lucky you, you have gotten to play with VR...

Majister-Ludi2976d ago

Motion controls alone definitely need to die. Microsoft is smart to focus on AR. If they can make it work like they intend it could change so much beyond gaming.

showtimefolks2976d ago

no to kinect. time to move on

xbox is finally gaining some positive PR so kinect will once again take them few steps back. it was a gimmick device than and now

otherZinc2976d ago

I love the Kinect, use it everyday.

Why o why2976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

For what it was intended for?

People may bemoan move but at least it can be used to play a wider range of titles in a more complex capacity. An input device may have changed how kinect played out. . They were adamant one wasn't needed so we ended up with a lot of flailing and an os navigation tool

Volkama2976d ago

An OS navigation tool that isn't very good for navigating the OS.

2976d ago
Fatal-Aim2976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

Kinect packs a lot of latency issues and its expensive for something so mediocre to both hardcore gaming and to what the others are doing. So no. Kinect is dead. Find a new outlet.

Fatal-Aim2976d ago

@ t-hall785

This is exactly why the XB1 is in the position it is in right now: too much talk about everything else and not enough focus on GAMES. No one wants to spend all of their hard earned money on a peripheral that is not catered to GAMES. That's more of a casual market.

t-hall7852976d ago

I find that funny. Ps4 has relied on 3rd party for the last 3 years while the x1 has been pumping out games. Ps4 is just now hitting its stride. That's the reason I got an x1 at launch and waited to get a ps4 last November.

Fatal-Aim2976d ago

And how does that apply to everybody else, t-hall? Why hasn't Kinect sold many units even after it was removed from the XB1 package? Simple answer: it caters to everything BUT games. So like I said before, people don't buy expensive, in-accurate peripherals that has nothing to do with games. That's for casuals, and now you are witnessing this as a cold, hard fact.

t-hall7852975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

You can't classify people who use kinect casuals. Im as hardcore as anybody in here. Probably 1 maybe 3 people who've commented that actually have both systems. Do people who have the ps camera classify as casuals too? It gives you more functionality. Point blank period. I have multiple people who use my x1. You know how we sign in? We sit in front of the tv. We both agree that kinect IS NOT for games. And up until a month ago the ps camera wasn't either. Its convenience.

Fatal-Aim2975d ago

But unlike Kinect, the PlayStation Camera is not "expensive". You are looking at $100 vs $45. When you factor in games, Kinect doesn't work nor does it support any games. The PlayStation Camera, on the other hand, does work for games (long before VR) since it has a different way of supporting games than Kinect; it uses the light bar on the DualShock 4 as well as the Move's sphere in certain motion controlled games, and now it uses PSVR's 9 LEDs to track the headset. So you see, it actually works great and precise for hardcore games. Even if Kinect was cheap, its completely useless for games, but because its overpriced and useless for games, no one gives it a single thought.

kneon2975d ago

@t-hall785

You can also log in to a PS4 just by sitting in front of the camera. That's old tech that doesn't require anything more sophisticated than a webcam.

This was a feature on some laptops about a decade ago, but it never caught on.

t-hall7852975d ago (Edited 2975d ago )

What games are you playing with the move? Lol exactly. Kinect isnt for playing through a game all the way per say but it does have functionality in some games. For example in dead rising 3 if a zombie grabs you, you can push the controller forward and get them off of you. The fitness app was very responsive and will wear your ass out. That wave racing game on kinect sports was actually fun and is very accurate and responsive. As far as being expensive, 100 bucks is the price of a game with a season pass. We play games. Its an expensive hobby. It was well worth it to me to pay the extra hundred for kinect. We have people paying the price of almost 2 consoles for vr...not expensive? Like i said earlier, a month ago all the eye was used for was getting naked in the playroom.

trooper_2976d ago

t-hall, what does the ps camera have to do with anything?

t-hall7852976d ago

Everyone in here says let kinect die because its not used for gaming. Motion controls are stupid. Well even with vr coming guess what. Motion control is still stupid. Still a gimmick. People like me don't use kinct for gaming. Never wanted it for gaming. I want it for its multimedia use. And that's ok. PS camera was used to compare and contrast is all. Sometimes its easier to make a point when you can make a comparison.

DragonbornZ2976d ago

And some more D4 episode too.
I swear man they could create exclusives games like the walking dead or Life is Strange and utilize the Kinect.
And if the stories were good and they utilized the Kinect as well as D4 did, Id be on board with every. Single. One of em.

nitus102976d ago

"I swear man they could create exclusives games like the walking dead or Life is Strange and utilize the Kinect."

Really! How?

One of the biggest problems with motion tracking is that "You are the controller" to quote Microsoft PR. It is all well and good flailing arms and moving your body at a party to control a game but a controller is so much more precise and has force feedback.

You as the controller need more room to move and you would get exhausted much more quickly especially in games that require allot of movement. Maybe that type of exercise is great for some but for the majority of people it is not.

DragonbornZ2976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

The thing is the games I mentioned above, their gameplay is just like D4, and if they were utilized with Kinect like D4 they'd require minimal movement, just a hand and a couple hand gestures.

I played through the whole gaming sitting down (there's literally no standing gestures or any way to get exhausted) with Kinect, and it was a really different experience, was so much fun. I switched to a controller a couple of hours in to see what it was like, and switched back and finished it with Kinect.

When I played I could eat and drink at the same time while playing, my room mates were moving around behind me at the time watching me play, and it worked really well, responded really smoothly. The only issue I had was that the menu voice controls were butts. You say something and it doesn't hear you and it literally does something else, but the motion controls were way above what I was expecting. Damn near perfect.

I say this as a guy who's played through D4 with Kinect though.
It was honestly a really fun experience and it would work sooo well with TellTales games if utilized like it was in D4.

DoomeDx2976d ago

What on earth is D4? Are people really getting that lazy that every game gets converted into a single letter and a digit?

Not everybody knows every game lol

DragonbornZ2976d ago

Haha I don't know why I didn't put the whole name.
Games name is D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die
And its the opposite. Actually pretty long lol

DoomeDx2975d ago

Note to devs: Make game names easier to remember lol

Herbalistic2976d ago

Kinect is one of the reasons why Xbox One suffers in performance compared to the PS4

Lennoxb632976d ago (Edited 2976d ago )

Its more cause they sacrifice too much bandwidth into the OS. Sure its quicker and more responsive, but it needs to have something shaved off in order for the console to take advantage of more of its power.

Adexus2976d ago

I really hope not, should be left dead and buried.

FoxyGotGame2976d ago

The very idea is stupid...

I'm eternally grateful some people will NEVER be in the position to make those kinds of awful decisions.

#Fail

Notellin2976d ago

I wish someone would make this decision at Microsoft. Oh wait they already did by making the kinect an optional accessory that no one will ever buy.

Lennoxb632976d ago

I agree to a certain extent. It will be more convenient to talk to Cortana (when she launches) without having to use a headset.

Also Hololens will probably take advantage of the Kinect camera in some way.

I use the Kinect all day everyday, but at the same time I understand why people don't want it.

kraenk122976d ago

There won't be any HoloLens for XBox. Did you really believe that marketing BS?!

Lennoxb632976d ago

There's a video of the Hololens connected to the X1. So try again.

MasterCornholio2976d ago

@Leno

There's also a video of illumiroom and Oculus Rift on the X1.

Doesn't mean they will become a reality for the system any time soon.

Their faked E3 presentations...Minecraft etc. That marketing BS which they only showed to fool XBox owners to believe they will have something better than VR.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead8h ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan7h ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.

More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. At least for now, they're potentially obvious games you'd most likely expect. And yes, while it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. From what I've heard, Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's mandate to increase every department's margins. VersusDMC5d ago

No way can they get rid of the hardware as probably 90% of game pass subscribers are hardware users.

Highly doubtful those users will move to PC or Cloud to subscribe there and the competition (Sony and Nin) will never have gamepass on their system.

If they want to keep the current subscribers, they need to keep releasing new hardware.

PSPSA5d ago

I'm not convinced, why then announce that they're actually working on the next-generation Xbox with “the largest technical leap”, and also looking into handhelds now?

Rols5d ago

Not like MS don’t drop things a hot potato if it is not performing. Look at MS history to see products or platforms discontinued. Xbox is not a charity for MS, it needs to make money and the ABK was the last roll of the dice for Xbox.

purple1015d ago

Xbox hardware team members have been incorporated into surface team

This perhaps shows they are not expecting big things from Xbox as a separate entity

Abear215d ago

Seems like they are planning to win next gen. All the acquisitions were this generation and nobody except Xbox fans expect games from the acquisitions any time soon.

They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.

It would be best if Xbox goes the way of Sega, just make and publish games. I know I myself will not support them at all with buying games from them, you all can. 🙃

Forza and Starfield next?

Skuletor6d ago

Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.

shinoff21836d ago

Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. If starfield and it's a small if does release on ps it'll be in the fall around the time for dlc or right at the dlc and come packaged with it.
