Final Fantasy VII was the first 'fantasy based on reality' IMO. Themes of Corporatism, Ecology, Identity, and liberalism(to the point where you were a terrorist) made the game the most mature, yet conveyed the message in a way that let you understand it as you got older. Kids could play for the anime influence, and adults can look back on it and still be learning new things about the game.

I think for the REMAKE Nomura is skewing the game away from politics now with Cloud's new line 'I don't care about your politics' and 'not interested' in response to Wedge. 'Not interested' was an NPC response, but never on the bombing mission, and the other line is brand new. Both new lines are trashing AVALANCHE's politics. It seems to me Nomura wants anime to be the only leg the game is standing on now. Really wish Sakaguchi was involved to slap Nomura's kiddie face. Don't tone down the politics, anime cannot be everything in FF.

Anyway, I'll leave that saying FFVII is my favorite, but I don't know if FFVIIR will compare.

FFVII was my first '10' game. Since politics are already getting toned down, FFVIIR has dropped to an '8.5'.

Cloud was just a mercenary for hire who's only in it for the paycheck. He really does not care for AVALANCHE's politics. Jumping to conclusion that the game will abandon all political overtones based on that one line from a character who's well known for being apathetic just seems foolish.

Satou2948d ago

Being indifferent like in the old game, and directly trashing the politics in the new game, are two totally different things IMO. I'll leave my judgement for the e3 or next trailer, which might raise it back up to a '9', but '10' is a long stretch for now.

If Cloud doesn't continue DIRECTLY trashing AVALANCHE and Tifa turns out alright, and aerial battle mechanics work, I'll raise it to 9-9.5. Just seems so 8.5ish to me right now. I might be overreacting though.

I think you're overthinking a little bit on that one. At least wait until you have more info to judge by, not just a 'I don't care about your politics' line.

The base of the story is politics, there's no way they can get around that.

ninsigma2948d ago

If they were skewing away from politics, they would never have mentioned it at all and that line wouldn't exist. Cloud is known to not give a damn about AVALANCHEs cause. He's just in it for the money at the beginning. To me that line is strengthening the political undertones of the game. It's almost as if they're going out of their way to paint Cloud as the ruthless mercenary he's supposed to be (or what the other characters think him to be) at the beginning of the game, so I honestly can't see how you would think those undertones aren't there. I've seen nothing but proof that they've stayed true to the original story so far. In fact, they've built it to be much more reminiscent of the original than I thought they would.

Satou2948d ago

Just a matter of taste I guess then, I disagree so far. I don't think the game is trashed but I feel its 8.5 level now. 'Whatever' would have been nicer to say than 'Not interested' IMO. To me there's a difference between indifference and trashing the politics.

I mean, I remember the original line "I don't care, I just want to finish this job before the Roboguards come". That painted him as a mercenary. Directly trashing the politics? Well now he's more apolitical than before.

goldwyncq2948d ago

This response reminds me of those who claimed that Final Fantasy is abandoning the "fantasy" part just because the party's main mode of transport in FFXV is a car, despite everything else obviously being fantastical. And you're right, this is a total overreaction on your part.

While your concerns may be valid, it is absolutely insane that you are giving this game a number rating already when we know next to nothing about it.

ninsigma2948d ago

"I mean, I remember the original line "I don't care, I just want to finish this job before the Roboguards come". That painted him as a mercenary. Directly trashing the politics? Well now he's more apolitical than before."

He is completely un-interested in politics in the original and was meant to be apolitical. That's what I get from that original line. The new line to me suggests the same. Just wants the job done with so he can have his money. The "your politics" in the remake line tells me he's not interested in their cause for blowing up the reactor. Which will basically setting up for the change in his character later when it becomes personal.

Satou2948d ago (Edited 2948d ago )

I always thought he was indifferent, not trashing the politics. I still think Nomura is pegging down politics a notch because they're so radical.

Some guys on Reddit had the same question, asking if Cloud 'seriously' said that. It may have been Nomura's way of saying, radical politics aside, the remake is getting made, or it may be that rather than being indifferent, Cloud is actively apolitical and taking it a bit further, trashing their politics. To me there's a difference.

In the original:

-Lines were "I don't care, I just want to finish this job before the Roboguards get here"(or whatever it was) vs "I don't care about your politics"

-Cloud silently listened to Jessie's plans on the train

-Cloud listened to Barret complain about Shinra

I'm afraid rather than NOT hearing about politics from Cloud, like the original, we're going to see him ACTIVELY put down their politics. To me this is new, and Nomura's way of dumbing the politics down, so it's not so radical. It's just something better left unsaid, and I seriously, SERIOUSLY hope Cloud isn't touting it every five minutes that AVALANCHE's politics don't matter, because it's already happened two times in the trailer. It could get annoying relatively quickly if politics keep getting dumbed down to keep a T rating or whatever Nomura's reasoning may be.

I think you are indeed overthinking it a bit...
