Final Fantasy II was an important stepping stone for the series and genre, flaws and all.
How does Final Fantasy II stand by the standards of today? Is it timeless? Or a forgettable entry to an unforgettable franchise?

Kazuko Shibuya held a panel and a live drawing at Japan Expo 2019, revealing neat details on Square's early days and Final Fantasy's history.
For me it's FFVI.
Final Fantasy VII was the first 'fantasy based on reality' IMO. Themes of Corporatism, Ecology, Identity, and liberalism(to the point where you were a terrorist) made the game the most mature, yet conveyed the message in a way that let you understand it as you got older. Kids could play for the anime influence, and adults can look back on it and still be learning new things about the game.
I think for the REMAKE Nomura is skewing the game away from politics now with Cloud's new line 'I don't care about your politics' and 'not interested' in response to Wedge. 'Not interested' was an NPC response, but never on the bombing mission, and the other line is brand new. Both new lines are trashing AVALANCHE's politics. It seems to me Nomura wants anime to be the only leg the game is standing on now. Really wish Sakaguchi was involved to slap Nomura's kiddie face. Don't tone down the politics, anime cannot be everything in FF.

Final Fantasy VIII is the best. GOTTA LOVE Force Your Way!! Best boss theme in the series and most challenging. FFX was too.
