PlayStation VR: Is Sony’s Virtual Reality Headset Set to Replicate PS4 Dominance?

Sony's PlayStation 4 console is currently the leading games console on the Market. Now the Japanese company is set to join the consumer Virtual Reality Space with its VR headset, PlayStation VR. PlayStation VR's price point is significantly lower than that of its nearest rivals, does this mean Sony's PS VR will become the dominant VR platform?

I got a chance to play around with the VR set back when it was called project morpheus and it's an experience that everyone has to try at least once, it doesn't matter if it's Sony's VR or the Oculus Rift you have to try it.

skydragoonityx3108d ago

Guys u seem to misunderstand me. Obviously @ the title not to CoNn3r_B apologies

G20WLY3108d ago

You'd have done better not to have replied to him then - I know, hindsight, and all that..

I don't expect it to sell as well as PS4 - that would be damn near impossible - but I do expect it to sell very well and very possibly better than it's PC counterparts.

Looks great, I'm definitely in!

CoNn3r_B3108d ago

It's all good, if I got annoyed at everyone who was rude to me the French would be extinct.

cleft53108d ago

Right, VR is definitely the next trend in the market. VR has a lot of applications and gaming is just one of them. Will Sony be dominate in the VR space? I don't know. The reality is that if you want the optimum VR experience from Sony and you just own the PS4, like the majority of their customers do, then its a $500 entry point. However, that isnt a bad price all things considered.

I think price point isn't going to be the main selling factor for VR. After all, there are VR headsets on the market for less than $100 dollars.

The crucial selling point is going to be the experiences VR developers deliver. If Sony has enough quality experience paired with its price point it will do very well. Either way, VR is not a fad. It's here to stay.

PSN_ZeroOnyx3108d ago

I believe PSVR will do quite well and PlayStation will sell 100% more VR headsets than any other console, but that's a given lol.

Eonjay3108d ago

Funny thing about dividing by 0... but thats a completely different topic for another time.

On topic, yes, of course it will sell more than the Xbox One's headset which doesn't exist but we can't write off Nintendo just yet because we have no clue what they are doing.

PSN_ZeroOnyx3107d ago

Calling it now. Nintendo will release a console/handheld hybrid without VR support.

Eonjay3108d ago

Probably, but lets not forget that the rift launches next week as well. So, we should be getting some reviews shortly. Exciting times :)

G20WLY3108d ago

Could you also share the long version, please?

Blaze9293108d ago

At the end of the day it's just an "accessory" - and sony has showed countless times what kinda support their "accessories" get.

I'm optimistic to try it but for right now, just seems like the next "3D" "ooh/ahhh" phase.

G20WLY3108d ago

^People who think like you, Blaze929, need to consider how different the circumstances are for VR when compared to 3D, Kinect or motion controls.

First of all, look at the companies who have HEAVILY invested in VR, all within such a short space of time. Sony, Facebook, Google, HTC, Valve, Samsung, etc. - everyone who's anyone in the world of consumer electronics is pushing their product to market with impressive software support existing AND in the pipeline.

PSVR, since that's what we're talking about here, has over 230 developers working on more than 150 announced games, 50 of which will be released within the 3 months after it's October launch and 25+ of which are confirmed exclusives.

Content on the PC VR platforms and PSVR will be portable to each other, assuming there are no exclusivity deals in place.

Then there's movie content, TV content, panoramic photography, 'adult entertainment', travel and tourism experiences, museum tours, among many other (some, no doubt, yet to be devised) formats.

I get that people will want to be cautious with their money, but to write it off as "the next 3D" is a poorly realised outlook.

You said you'll try it, so you're more open minded than some. I've yet to hear of anyone being unimpressed by this generation of 'proper' VR, so you may well emerge from the HMD excited like the rest of us! :^)

pinkcrocodile753106d ago (Edited 3106d ago )

Really, the long version?

OK, let me see.

The first issue is that is needs to be tethered to the PS4, just like Oculus and the PC.

So you are buying an extension to the PS4 and not withstanding the remote monitor for ps4, it's very much a single player environment which might put off casual gamers.

If the camera and move controllers only managed to get a small adoption rate in comparrison to the ps3/4 install base then it's lunacy to assume that there would be 100% uptake for VR or even 50%.

So just with those two point, my belief is that NO, VR wil NOT gain the same level of adoption regardless or how you feel about it .

As for me, I will not be buying the VR or Vive or Oculus. The very important reason is that I have unequal eyesight and the poroximity to the creen makes me feel very ill very quickly.

Frame rate increases DO NOT solve my problem either before you ask.

Now if I have this problem, ask yourself this, how many people have unequal eyesight globally? and how many people will NOT buy it because of it.

Even if you said 10% then you will not get 100% adoption or anywhere near it now will you.

It's great to aim for the sky when you are excited about something as you are with PSVR. However I but suggest you excercise causion before "Telling" people that they are wrong especially when your arguement is on shaky ground.

G20WLY3106d ago

^Hello Pinky, thanks for your rant! :^)

Where, pray tell, did I suggest that it will get the same uptake, i.e. 100% strike rate of the existing PS4 user base? I didn't - that would be utterly ridiculous, so please don't put words into my mouth. You just 'won' an argument with yourself. Congratulations!

My post was centred around people suggesting it's going to fail like Kinect and 3D. I suggested they look at the information we have available and form a rounded expectation based on that.

I suggest you do the same. ;^)

GribbleGrunger3108d ago

Maybe in market share, but I very much doubt it will equal the same monthly sales figures.

miyamoto3108d ago (Edited 3108d ago )

PS VR is the perfect casual and hardcore gamer magnet.
So there you go.

rainslacker3108d ago

Maybe replication means selling 2:1 over it's competition...in this case OR or Vive. That could be very possible, since I don't think either the OR or Vive are aimed at the mainstream market as of yet.

I think OR and PSVR are likely to be a pretty big on the competitive market, however, they do appeal to different segments as well, so it's mostly just a matter of where a person plays. The success of one will likely translate to the success of the other, since gamers in general do get excited about the same things despite having different preferences in platform.

Not really sure why one has to outdo the other, and why people are comparing them to such a degree since they aren't direct competitors in any way. PSVR is aimed at the console market, and OR is aimed at the PC market. Despite Sony thinking of PSVR as it's own platform, the fact remains that platform will exist within different segments of the market.

Hopefully not a lot of remasters

Eonjay11h ago

Agreed, but if I could pick one game to remaster first it would be Killzone 2. If you had to pick one which would it be?

Mr_cheese11h ago

I know it's not the same but I'd love a reboot of resistance or warhawk

u-bEttA-rUn11h ago

If they announce Kill Zone 2 remake or resistance 2 that multiplayer would be crazy. But Warhawk I would cry like a 2 year old 😂😂😂 give me bloody roar

ravens5211h ago

God of War 1-3, Ascension, Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus all in One.

RaiderNation10h ago

I love Killzone, but I would prefer a complete reboot of the franchise, using the newest version of the Decima engine, rather than simply a remaster of part 2.

SimpleDad9h ago

Sony will not do Killzone 2 or any Killzone because they don't have plans for it in the future... No TV shows, no sequel, no Lego game, no multiplayer...

This is dead for Herman... Only Aloy.
And that's sad.

Zero hype for tomorrow.

Kingrizzy909h ago

legacy of kane, resistance, or just something totally new that hasnt been already done

Cacabunga9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Hopefully zero gaas, will show that they’re starting to reason!!!
And yeah the remaster trend must also stop.
PS5 exclusives or nothing go home

A new Killzone, Uncharted, Tsushima, inFamous, Resistance, Wolverine or something original single player.

CobraKai8h ago

Killzone 1. In think that needs a retelling

Profchaos7h ago

I either want something from the infamous franchise or the cheeky answer is being lemmings back as that's now Sony

DarXyde3h ago

Killzone 2 I think falls into remake territory.

I'll take a Warhawk remake or even a remaster but that's it, really.

Any remasters for a last generation game on a backwards compatible console is just insulting.

IAMRealHooman11h ago

only remasters, even remasters of games that aren't even out yet

DodoDojo11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Wrong, there will also be a 2 minute snippet of Lego Horizon.

bloop8h ago

If they don't show something from a couple of their big studios after the absolute disaster they've had with Concord then I'll lose all hope. This generation has been a complete letdown so far and there's very little to look forward to at the moment.

RaidenBlack11h ago

Pretty sure : RE9, Days Gone Remaster, HZD Remaster, 1 last SH2 trailer, Wolverine trailer, Until Dawn trailer
Maybe(s) : GoT 2 announcement, DS2 (but already happening@ TGS), Pragmata, TLOU2 or SpiderMan 2 PC announcement,
Wishlist : Santa Monica & Naughty Dog's new project tease, Marathon gameplay trailer
Don't Want : Any AC Shadows trailer, Any more remasters other than the ones leaked

Eonjay11h ago

You really think that other remaster is Days Gone? And my God what happened to Pragmata?!?

seanpitt2311h ago

It’s 30 minutes, I think you’re being optimistic there, don’t have high expectations, I know mine are the lowest they have ever been since what i have witnessed these past 4 years!

crazyCoconuts11h ago

Agreed w/ Sean. Keep expectations low.

Juiceup1h ago

jfc what is this trash lineup Sony please

Only 5 remasters. They had to cut back to squeeze in 1 new announcement. They will have another SoP next month to cover the other 12 remasters.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Gravity Rush 1 & 2 Remastered

Until Dawn Remastered

DarXyde2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

In the case of Gravity Rush, a remaster of a remaster that plays on PS5 now would be bizarre. Then again, so does Horizon.

This only makes sense if it means a PC release, but they still closed the studio and releasing this would be very poor taste.

potatoseal10h ago

I'm presonally looking forward to a Days Gone one. Would love any excuse to play that game again. I loved it

darthv725h ago

Why wait for an excuse... just go play it now.

CobraKai8h ago

Im thinking showcasing Pro versions of existing games.

neutralgamer19928h ago(Edited 8h ago)

They could do a lot right by simply announcing a blood-borne remastered so many people have been waiting for it and they should not only bring it to PlayStation 5 but also PC

If they are all intent on doing a lot of remasters, how about doing some of the remasters from the games during the PlayStation 2 and three generation instead of PlayStation 4 games?

Can we get infamous collection? Can we please get Socom from the PlayStation 2 generation? Uncharted trilogy God of war trilogy twisted metal collection, kill zone trilogy, resistance trilogy some of these games they can simply just unlock online multiplayer. They’re only one need to do a lot of work and people would enjoy them

But instead, let’s just remastered the last of us horizon zero down the God of war 2018 this PlayStation Sony executive bosses are some of the most idiotic in the past 10 years

PlayStation has such a long history. They can simply do a lot of fun service and get so much positive PR but they keep making the same mistake again and again and again.

Rimeskeem5h ago

I would honestly prefer remasters/remakes/reboots of games than GaaS they have tried to push.

TheEroica4h ago

Release the remastered games on the sheep!

JackBNimble1h ago

Hahaha... I was going to make the same joke.
That's all they have

Over 50% of PlayStation's Live Service Projects Either Failed Or Were Cancelled

PlayStation's live-service history shows that the gaming giant has failed frequently, resulting in a grim outlook for the future.

Miraak82 15d ago

What do they expect !? the ones that failed are just knockoffs of existing popular games usually releasing alittle too late. Their multplayer offering haven't been good since ps3 and even later on in its lifecycle it started to chase trends like how Killzone 3 & SF tried to copy CoD compared to KZ2. Honestly I can't believe they gave up on LBP, technically not a live service but man I spent so much on DLC and costumes , Warhawk and KZ2 and their expansions . Demons Souls which I spent the most time playing was one of the most unique multiplayer experience ever . All the resistance games were just awesome .. but since ps4 I haven't enjoyed any 1st party multiplayer offering . Marathon might be alright but do they really think a Horizon mmo/mp is a good idea .

15d ago Replies(4)
refocusedman15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

how abt they remake warhawk as a live service game. that would be awesome. maybe MAG, bring back killzone resistance.... cmon sony stop trying to reinvent the wheel when you alreafy have tires in your garage.

porkChop14d ago

I could see Warhawk really working as a live service. Between the weapons, vehicles, warhawks, etc , there's plenty of opportunity for cosmetics. As long as the gameplay loop doesn't change too much from the PS3 game, that shit was unlike anything else and I loved it. Just keep releasing a new map every few months, and keep things fresh with new gameplay modes/events.

RaiderNation14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Agreed. Likewise with Twisted Metal. That game could work very as a live service game. Just follow the Rocket League format and it could be great!

Not all "live service" are bad. They just need to be well thought out and make sense.
