Ah, GamingBolt.... This really isn't "everything you need to know".

PSVR'S OLED-RGB screen also outputs a higher sub-pixel density meaning that it has full RGB sub-pixels for each pixel in the 1080p display, which makes a big difference in reducing the screen-door effect compared to other higher resolution headsets. There could be trade-offs elsewhere for Oculus and Vive using PenTile solution, but we haven't seen anything yet.

If you're gonna attempt a VR display technology comparison, get it right..... don't just shrug and go "oh well, at least Sony mandates a 60fps minimum". You guys decided not to report properly. When normal gamers can do a better job than you, it's time to re-evaluate.

Wholeheartedly agree...then, it's Gamingbolt. I guess no one expected a thorough technical analysis.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3375d ago

It's not a technical analysis. It's a subtle mocking of PSVR. For example:

"The PlayStation VR has a refresh rate of 90 to 120 Hz, making it potentially higher than both of its competitors depending on the game, but it falls short in other areas. The OLED display has a 1080p resolution with 960×1080 resolution in each eye and a 100 degree field of view. (Oh well – at least Sony mandated that no PlayStation VR title can drop below 60 FPS. There’s that.)"

The writer mocks the resolution of PSVR, but ignores the fact that PSVR is capable of higher framerates than other headsets.

@IGiveHugs2NakedWomen

There's a big difference between refresh rates and framerates. It's not the same thing.

You don't know what you're talking about, you should've expected that the PSVR would be an inferior product compared to the Rift and Vive, that was your first mistake.

The only games that will run at 120Hz on the PSVR will be on rails or wii level graphics, keep in mind they always upscale from 60fps when at 120Hz, most games however will be upscaled to 90Hz (so possibly at 45fps? Unconfirmed so far). The Vive and Rift are 90Hz and 90fps natively.

The PSVR has to magnify a single lower resolution screen, so of course it needed to be an OLED screen, the Vive and Rift uses two LED screens at a higher resolution, no need for the higher pixel density there. I assure you the PSVR has the greatest screen door effect, lowest fov and least smooth image of the three.

I could go on, but this and more is easily available, Digital Foundry and others will make all of this clear when all three are out I'm sure.

As I've said countless times before, the PSVR is a good mid spec VR headset and it's relatively low price means it will do well, but be under no illusion, it's tech is lagging behind the PC counterparts (especially the Vive) and it's controllers are a generation old. Don't expect any PSVR games to look anything like Star Citizen any time soon.

Muadiib, I agree with the fact that PSVR is the least powerful of the three, but you sound a lot biased to me.

Screen door effect

Most people who tried them all don't agree with you. Let's talk about Tom's HW for example (I hope we agree these guys are not Sony fanboys):

"Considering the issues that other headsets have had with low resolution (the "screen door" effect), most people would think the problem would be worse on the PSVR. This couldn't be further from the truth. Upon putting the display on my head, I was immediately impressed with the fidelity of what I was looking at. I didn't detect even a hint of "screen door," and the graphics were crisp and clear."

Framerate

Sony has said that no developer is allowed to go lower than 60 fps, than with re-projection the console outputs a 120hz image. A developer can decide to output the game at native 90hz or 120hz if they want.

Which game will do that? Mostly indies and games who don't rely heavily on graphics.

It's an old news, there is really no secret.

60Hz rendering » 120Hz display reprojected
90Hz rendering » 90Hz display
120Hz rendering » 120Hz display

Quality Overall

Digital Foundry will compare games that are out and they will say they look better on an Oculus/Vive, with a 1500$ PC behind, we know that and that's the way it's supposed to be.

However, if you want to know the impressions of people who tried all 3 of them at GDC, you'll notice how most of them said they had a blast with all the 3 of them, never saying that the PSVR experience felt cheap. And you know why? Because VR is not about brute power, it's about immersion.

I am not a Sony Fanboy, the only reason why I won't pick up an Oculus/Vive at launch is that I don't have rig powerful enough to support them, and there's no point in making one now since AMD and Nvidia are going to launch their new GPUs later this year. I will pick up a PSVR on day one because I already have everything I need to enjoy it, paying only 400$.

Let's just be happy: VR is almost here, gaming is going to change!

kraenk123375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

Hey Gamingbolt...if you try something objective once in while why don't you at least mention the fact the PSVR screen has superior screen tech with 3 RGB sub pixels per pixels or the fact it upscales to 120Hz?!!

joeorc3375d ago

I pointed this out yesterday, but its pretty true.
Here is the thing and nothing is going to change this..

Calls a certain publisher

Sony : how about that star wars game , yeah its doing pretty well, hey how is that light saber VR part game for the new knights of the old republic game going...oh that's fantastic..oh' they are able to give each player their own color for their light saber...nice, what's that? Oh dual welding also..and unique lightsabre unlocks..awesome..

Support for our Playstation VR glove to mimic Jedi power's, oh good..

Well carry on now..

Hangs up phone. Spins around...kaz looks fondly on his desk..holding on a Vive & OculusRift Motion controller and thinks to himself with a day smirk..yes you do light up like Playstation move, but not as much presence inside a starwars VR game like playstation move does in that game..chuckles slightly..but at least you will be joining Playstation as one of the best ways to play a Jedi in a game..Kaz picks up his red lighted Playstation move controller, and puts on his playstation red lighted VR glove.

Pressing intercom hold my calls Darthkaz is on his way to the PlayStation VR room to challenge Jedi yoshida to a dual for who buys lunch.

It really doesnt matter to me.. I have a PS4, the camera, and a move controller already.. All i need is the headset and some games.. Its an easy choice to make.. $400 and ive got a new way to play games.. Sony always delivers with software.. Vita may not have survived long but im still getting games every month or so for it and im getting my money's worth..

Same with this.. Its new tech and if it takes off thats great.. If it bombs, im sure to get a few gems out of it.. I dont have a strong enough PC for the competition nor do i plan to invest any more than this entry level device.. Easily choosing PSVR..

IMO, there's two that are better than all these (except maybe Beat Saber), Thrill of the Fight and AUDICA.
