It's a sordid love affair that takes a ton of my money, time and occasionally my sanity. This is in reference to gaming and women now that I think about it. However, it is love after all...
Playstation only massively meant anything to me with 3 things:
1) Resident Evil on PS1.
2) The PS3 - the range of cinematic games and indies. The reliability and solidity of the hardware. Totally free online and great Playstation Plus offers.
3) The PS4 - as above but with extra smoothness and more of a robust feel in the controller. Free to use certain online features.
PS2 wasn't really important to me. Some of its early games didn't look as good as Dreamcast ones and then the Xbox came out with much more power and it got GTA, a few Silent Hills. The only big multiformat series the Xbox didn't get from the start, for my tastes, was Resident Evil- and Gamecube got RE4 before PS2 ever did. Dreamcast ceasing production was followed with some of the best Sega or Sega studio made games going to Xbox and Gamecube before PS2 saw any of them. For me, Sony's high sales point to date, the PS2, was certainly enough for casuals and very good for gamers with niche Japanese tastes but, not being in to games like Metal Gear Solid which I felt were waiting for better hardware to shine, I was happy to just play Xbox and Gamecube combined.
Sony benefitted from Sega becoming too niche a company, over the several years before the Dreamcast. Sony benefitted from the N64 using cartridges, which meant that, apart from some standout games by Nintendo and Rare, third party games, when they existed, often looked rougher than PS1 games. Sony benefitted from Microsoft concentrating too much on Kinect.
Sony make sure they follow a path that is both populist and niche and they always provide a strong lineup of cinematic style games.
