Samurai Warriors 4 Empires is the latest spin-off in the franchise from Omega Force and Koei Tecmo. It's just as it has always been: a hack and slash take on feudal era warfare with a fantastical twist on Japanese history.

Kinda weird option but I guess some don't want to play as females at all.

Which isn't really historically accurate as there were not only samurai who were women during the warring states period but some were prominent officers as well.

I know this series is a twist on ancient history, but I see no real justification for this choice.

No one needs to justify anything. They have the right to do that with their game if they so wish. I'm not saying it's a sensible thing to do but the point isn't about whether it makes sense or not, it's about whether they need to justify it and the answer is a resounding NO.
