Ex Xbox Community Manager Says PS4/PC No Man's Sky Is “Stale”; Hopes There’s More Post-Launch

Microsoft’s former Canadian Xbox community manager, Raj Patel, has shared his view on PS4/PC title No Man's Sky, and he isn’t too excited.

Free_Fro2972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

I'm with Raj Patel on this one. It just looks boring based on the footage I've seen.

That's just my initial impression.

Getting hands-on could change my perspective..
But that price of admission..its not even attractive enough for me to gamble.

It might just not be for you.

LostDjinn2972d ago

WHAT?! No.
He's right. The only intelligent thing to do here is get the opinion of someone who admits to not having done anything but looked at a few screenshots. Screenshots tell you the games structure, story, performance and scope after all. Fro's thinking is completely sound. As is that of Raj.
Nasty "oversight" overload. *smh*

Excuse me ?

I don't think it is possible to have any intelligent/meaningful reply to his tweet ...

the Division looks Boring to me... it might not be for me i guess.. but No Mans Sky looks fun to me...

my point is everyone has a different View

sonarus2972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

Its easy to see why a lot of people consider this game stale. It doesnt have nearly enough explosions or killing. If they could only fit in like 100 more explosions and 1000 more kills then maybe it will be fun then

Mr Pumblechook2972d ago

That's a bit unprofessional for a competitor's ex-staff to criticise the game on a public platform. Keep it classy.

bf0007779662972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

Maybe this is not the game for many people, but this is what make PS4 shines(and sales) over Xbox one. Not everyone has the same taste for games. Maybe most gamer would like to play COD or HALO, but there are many dont, and they can find what thay like. Because sony is willing to invest such games. It's a pity if we can only play HALO, Forza, or Gears of War. No matter how good they are, we will get tired of them eventually. So it suprise me that MS shot down many small studio that didn't make money and focus on those did. Its dangerous and put themselves at risk. We will never see those great indie project like Until Dawn, No Man's Sky, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture because MS will never support them. This is what 'the best place to play' means.

UnHoly_One2972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

Big time click-bait article...

So we are going to start taking what a former employee of a company says and blaming that on the company that no longer employs them?

C'mon, seriously?

This guy's opinion on it means nothing more than mine, or yours. He's just a regular guy.

If it was Phil Spencer or Major Nelson saying this, then maybe I see a story there, but this guy? Who flippin cares?

There might be some former low level Sony guy out there that hates Halo. Whoopty-freakin-do.

It's just an opinion of one random guy.

But you guys are all falling for it and turning it into a big argument. C'mon people.

2972d ago
TheCommentator2972d ago

Mr. Pumblechook, I'm not sure how it's unprofessonal for someone who doesn't work for MS to have a negative opinion. It doesn't matter where he used to work because he's not working there any more. I don't think No Man's Sky looks very interesting right now either. Just saying.

GamingIVfun2972d ago

Who cares what an ex Xbox employee has to say about a PS4/PC game based on pictures and video footage. Saying that No Man's Sky is stale when their really is no game like it available is a interesting choice of words.

How do u feel about Elite Dangerous? How does this guy? Elite has far less to do, no on foot action, no real planet exploration, yet it's very successful. If ppl aren't bored to tears with Elite, then No Man's Sky should by comparison be riveting.

UltraNova2972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

Your forgetting something here, Elite D is multiplayer so based on the fact that these days its ok to have less content (or almost none) as long as you have multiplayer at launch is far more important than having a whole universe worth of content in single player.

Edit: Oh who the hell I'm I kidding... a former xbox exec slandering a Sony/PC game? Yeah ok.

NatFanBoyRestricted2972d ago

I actually agree with you here. But one thing gamers don't phrase right is "nothing to do". In most cases it's them referring to nothing that they want to do. So after saying that, there's definitely stuff in NMS I would love to do that Elite doesn't have (yet), besides multiplayer. They each have their pros and cons

fei-hung2972d ago

Surprise, surprise. Ex Xbox community manager down plays Sony console exclusive based on nothing else but pictures and ignoring majority of the facts.

PurpHerbison2972d ago

I have a PS4/PC and will NEVER own an Xbox, but I still agree with the majority of what was said. At least in this current moment in time.

ThyMasterDebater2972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

Yeah, Hard times over at Microsoft the last week. If only they could create a game with half the potential instead of slashing 8 studios. Judging from screen shots and this guy is a community manager?

It's sad that articles like this make the front page. it's not even news, It's just some guy on his Twitter speculating.

Death2972d ago

According to his Linkdin profile he had 5 jobs at 5 different companies while he was "community manager" at Microsoft. My guess is he was a subcontractor working with the MVP program in some way. If you check the Xbox Canada community page the link to Raj as Community Manager is still active. I'm not sure how "real" this position is since he hasn't been replaced and the link still goes to his twitter feed.

UnwanteDreamz2972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

How many of you with negative comments have seen the latest previews/hands on?

If you haven't take the time to look them up on Youtube. There is more to this game then just exploring and resource collecting. Do yourself a favor or remain uninformed.

IMO after seeing what I've seen Mr. Patel looks stupid

2972d ago
Captain_J_Sheridan2972d ago

The game does seen rather empty, the mechanics in place look like they can keep you busy, but not exactly entertained

Unless there are tons of exciting events that they have been keeping secret from us, like huge monster fights, epic spaceship battles or tense underground mining, I don't see the game working past it's "40 hour campaign", and getting boring after 10 to 20 hours

I too am counting on post-launch content if that's the case, as it does look to be easy to add events into this universe, like a Borg-like threat, a large scale war or new multiplayer modes

Goldby2972d ago

Sean actually said that depending where you are it may take anywhere from 40-120 hours of constant travveling, mining and upgrading to get to the center of the galaxy.

Thats before you take into consideration the alien tablets, nps, helping frieghters/attacking them and all the shebang along with it

Pongwater2972d ago

"like a Borg-like threat, a large scale war or new multiplayer modes"

I feel like the people asking for things like that aren't who this game is aimed at in the first place.

"The game does seen rather empty, the mechanics in place look like they can keep you busy, but not exactly entertained"

Disagree completely.

Fin_The_Human2972d ago

The game reminds me of MineCraft in space.

Which is a good thing but the game should have been 30 to 40 bucks.

BattleTorn2972d ago

I'd love for someone to PM me....

I'm dying to know whether full-retail was originally planned..

80$CAN is sooooo steep for Minecraft in space.

S2Killinit2972d ago

I think a job just opened up at MS.

Death2972d ago

I don't know if he was actually employed. Linkdin shows he left in November 2015. The link at Xbox Canada still goes to his twitter page. The Community managers for Xbox were typically Microsoft employees that held other positions within the company. Community management would be more of a resume builder and not an actual paid position. Evangelism was done by fans within the community and at times recognized in the MVP program. MVP's aren't directed and have freedom to express what they feel. The community manager would be a link between the MVP's/community and Microsoft. I don't see where Raj held a position outside of his role as "community manager". This leads me to believe he was a subcontractor for Xbox.ca. It's still a little odd since Canadian MVP's were typically part of the same program as the U.S. I'm not sure what would warrant a separation.

CryofSilence2972d ago (Edited 2972d ago )

It's an exploration game, so if that isn't your cup of tea, then it probably won't be exciting to you. Others will love exploring the near infinite space based on the developers' physics.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2972d ago

Oh that's really credible...

Xbox community manager isn't impressed with No Man's Sky.

You can file this under "Who cares?"

Realms2972d ago

Right because your opinion is very trust worthy when it comes to being objective.

showtimefolks2972d ago

Ok that's his opinion

Division actually looks boring. No man sky could be boring as well but I have yet to see so much to make my mind

But does that mean if someone enjoys the division that they are wrong? Absolutely not

It's just my opinion

Seraphim2972d ago

tweet reads: "Every gameplay image I've seen of No Man's Sky looks like it could take place on the same planet. 'Infinite universe' eh? I don't see it."

thank you captain obvious. You are Ex of what and employed where now again? Maybe he's trying to get his job back at MS. Publicity grab tweet. How is this news? Ex someone of XB says this... geez...

Personally I'm not on the hype train. this is definitely not a game everyone will be interested in or like. For me I think it's a game I'd have to sit down and actually play to truly admire. that being said I guess this guy hasn't seen many pics or videos that are public because I've seen several different looking planets in passing. However in some odd way he has a point. though every planet is round and you can only fit so much into the game, so much detail before ending up with a game that requires 15 blu ray discs or a TB of hard drive space. So just how different are these trillion planets going to look and be? I think a little too much emphasis is being placed on just how many planets there will be and that some who are on the hype train might be disappointed.

DarXyde2972d ago

Curious, have you looked at Hello Games' previous titles (Joe Danger series)?

Let's dissect the key members of the team's individual projects:

Sean Murray has worked on Burnout 3: Takedown (93 on Metacritic) and Black (77).

Grant Duncan worked on Virtua Tennis 3 (80) and Sega Superstars Tennis (67).

Ryan Doyle has worked on the Burnout series (69-93, the low end actually being something of an outlier score) and Geometry Wars: Galaxies (80).

Then we have David Ream who has worked on Geometry Wars.

Combine their efforts and you get Joe Danger 1 and 2 (86 and 82, respectively). And those are small games.

No Man's Sky is incredibly ambitious and completely dwarfs their smaller project in scale. They have Murray who's worked on Black so his chops will be useful in designing the game as a first person title. Most of the key members worked with Criterion on Burnout games, so I would not be surprised if the sense of speed and control for the ship is superb.

I would say at worst, the game will score roughly 8/10 among reviewers. That seems to be their collective sweet spot and it's not at all a bad score. I've loved games that scored lower than that (Condemned:Criminal Origins and Folklore to name a couple). I'm sure you have, too.

I would say it's well worth the gamble. It's a passionate team and they've taken quite some time refining the game. It's beautiful, vast, and still largely a mystery. You could be on the negative side and say it looks boring based on what you've seen.

Or you could be like me and be thrilled about everything you have not seen.

USMC_POLICE2972d ago

You can explore space, planets, alien life and have ships, so boring

joab7772971d ago

TheSaint2971d ago (Edited 2971d ago )

I guess we know why he's an 'ex' community manager.

lelo2play2971d ago

Honestly, I'm not sure about No Man's Sky. At a premium 60€ price tag, I'll wait for reviews and when it's much cheaper.

We don't know what's fully in the game as they haven't announced everything but I'd feel better if I knew there was a focus on building/crafting aswell like in Minecraft.

Find a planet you like the look of, build a small house. If you build a house on another planet light years away then they could add a portal/stargate/teleporter which you can build if you find very rare, hard to come by materials.

Hopefully they will add this in DLC/Expansions or in the sequel.

They honestly could do the features better then Minecraft if they wanted. Minecrafts crafting has become stale these days with most of the stuff you'd think would be included as only in mods.

Malphite2972d ago

Sean Murray mentioned that it is a feature that might be added at some point. The reason they decided against it is because they want people to explore the universe first. It's basically a decision based on game design purely.

-Foxtrot2972d ago

Well once we've explored hopefully the first add on is a "Home Sweet Home" expansion pack

Turned based Phantasy Star and Shinning Force remain at the top of my list of Sega IPs that need to return. At the very least I'd take a Shining Force collection that has 1,2,3, CD and the Game Gear entries.

FinalBoss7d ago

I was hesitant to put these two on. I've personally played more PSO than the RPG version. And shame on me, I don't remember much about Shining Force to talk about it properly.

That said, so many Sega licences deserve their place in this list.

jznrpg5d ago

A new Phantasy Star in the numbered series would be amazing. Shining Force too. But I’d settle on some collections as that’s probably the best we will get

anast7d ago

I don't trust Sega to do a proper comeback. The games will be just remastered and/or monetized to death.
