Replay: VHS Is Not Dead Review (Nintendo Enthusiast)

"It’s tough for puzzle-platformers to stand out. So many do such similar things, often using just a single concept to gain attention. It is that concept that the developers bank the game’s success on, hoping that the one gimmick is good enough to carry a full game. Replay: VHS Is Not Dead is a game that does, indeed, bank its entire success on one element. Fortunately, it works out great, and Replay has wound up being one of the most fun puzzle platformers I’ve played in a long time."

Replay: VHS is not dead Review | TXH

Cameron writes "Replay: VHS is not dead is a refreshing, mechanically complex platforming puzzle game. It embraces VHS, and all the quirks and movies that came from it. The game utilises the quick convenience of being able to rewind your VHS, allowing for a lot of interesting and varied challenges and it does this within a setting that will be sure to invoke some form of nostalgia.TheXboxHub reviews Replay: VHS is not dead on Xbox One

Replay: VHS is not dead | Xbox One UK Review

REPLAY: VHS IS NOT DEAD is a complex platform memory puzzle game – and try saying that fast three times. Set in the videotape heyday of the 80’s and early 90’s, Replay: VHS is not dead is chock full of old school references, from the 16bit art style to the film references dotted through it. It’s like stepping back in time and renting a VHS. (In case you don’t know, a VHS was like a big cassette tape that had films on instead of music… hang on, what if you don’t know what a cassette tape is? err… try Googling it…)

REPLAY: VHS is not dead takes the time-manipulation mechanic and uses it to produce some really well-designed and interesting puzzles. The rewind mechanic employed here - and its all or nothing effect - can feel harsh but in reality only makes the sense of satisfaction upon solving a puzzle all the greater.

The mix of puzzle, memory and reflex gaming is solid and the boss battles are some of the most interesting puzzles in recent times.

Recommended.
