Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright & Conquest Review | Hey Poor Player

Hey Poor Player's Jack Hills writes - "In 2013, Nintendo brought Fire Emblem: Awakening to the west, the game itself was praised by critics and players alike. I myself got the game back in July and enjoyed almost every second of it. So with Awakening still fresh in my mind, I dove into Fire Emblem Fates, hoping for an experience at least on par With the previous installment."

Looks like another worthwhile entry in the Fire Emblem series

I'm dying to check it out myself, but my backlog is just too massive at the moment. Gonna have to wait a few months to finally take the plunge. Until then my CE is just going to collect dust.

Same here.. However this is my main priority whenever i play my 3DS again.. That SE is sitting there just haunting my soul to play it but im holding off until i finish this huge backlog of console titles.. Then even more will keep coming and bravely second will be next taunting me.

Solid review. I'm glad to hear the differences between versions don't distract too much from the game as a whole.

I put every other game on Hiatus until I finish Conquest, Birthright and Revelation (in that order). No matter what system I play on or what the latest AAA game I always find myself taking time out to experience the Fire Emblem series. It's always worth the effort.

What do you think about the game so far?

I thought the first 6 chapters were rushed- that heavy impact event in Ch 6 would have carried a lot more weight with some proper buildup.

Gameplay
Best in the series. Undeniably amazing. Some of the best maps and that DLC Beach Brawl map is the toughest, most strategic map I've ever played.

Story
Decent, yet to be determined if it's better than Awakenin

Characters
Definitely not as good as Awakening. Don't get me wrong I love the characters, but compared to Chrom, Lissa and Frederick... Idk. Heard Conquest has much better characters than Birthright though so we'll see

Overall
Among the best in the series. Up there with Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. DEFINITELY the best handheld entry to date, bar none

I like it. Best thing is 70 chapters of fire emblem! Its fun and has tons of content.

What I don't like is everything else. Story is atrocious. It's really bad. The characters don't help either. They're all boring without a single stand out character like all the past games had. Don't like the world either. It's very inconsistent and the game does too much. A time consuming yet pointless my castle system. A rediculous alternate dimension only shoehorned in to explain how children are possible. Its awakening minus the great characters, awesome cutscenes, good story (arguably) and it just throws a bunch of needless fluff at you.

The gameplay is solid though. Its awakening 2.0 with a handful of different objectives to spice it up. Def not as tight and balanced as POR/RD which I consider the gold standard for not only fire emblem but all Srpgs. Its easy to plow through and I miss objectives and bonus experience although that's a personal opinion.

Its more fire emblem. Def won't look back with nostalgia like when I remember the serenes forest map that's 4 maps in one or the stealth mission where being spotted equals a failed mission or the awakening map where you fight in the rain with beautiful music after a huge story event went down. This game has no standout maps or moments like past games for me (so far still have to play revelations). It has no memorable characters like Chrom, Marth, Ike, Lissa, Tharja, Frederick, or Kellam. Its a huge step down in characters and story sadly.

I have Fire Emblem Fates LE, the European one. Not sure if it's as valuable as the US version, but it certainly was in high demand.

Chevalier482d ago

Don't think the European one would be as valuable since it's not region free. I got mine box and all and all those Yokai Watch games

Nyxus482d ago

I also have some of the Yokai Watch games, but also the PAL versions which don't seem to be that valuable.

Its not often I actually have games on the 'most expensive list' but I do own Rhythm Thief and Layton vs. Ace Attorney. I believe both of them are sealed as well.

Nice! Hopefully they re-release the Layton games on the Switch. Surprised they haven't already

Why 'Fire Emblem Fates' Use of Multiple Routes Exceeds That of 'Three Houses'

Fire Emblem Fates and Fire Emblem: Three Houses both contain multiple routes that change the outcome of the story, but the 3DS games far outperform the most recent Fire Emblem game in regard to routes. classes, and difficulty levels.
