Developer “Guarantees” that “Nintendo NX Won’t Have Third-Party Support”

CRAVE: "The Ori and the Blind Forest dev claims they "talked to Nintendo and got absolutely nothing."

Neonridr3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

keeping away from "some third party developers". I think the key here is that Nintendo is going to be focused on the larger studios first and the kits will filter down from there.

Kinda need to make sure all the big guns are on board before the little guys, no?

Let me know when Ubisoft, EA, etc are all saying the same thing.

Apollosupreme3405d ago

Where is your evidence of any of what you just said?

Darkfist3405d ago

just fanboy talk, the fact that he thinks that those big studios just simply gona make games on a console that hardly their games sell unless its a launch game(zombi u)

Neonridr3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

@Apollosupreme - well I took the quote from the article itself.

and the second part was in reference to the fact that just because some random independent developer is having trouble getting a dev kit or getting more information doesn't mean that major studios are having issues acquiring dev kits. I will believe more to this story when I see a larger studio make the same comment.

Don't see how anything I said isn't completely sane or relevant.

@Darkfist - If the machine is capable enough (on par power wise to the XB1 or PS4) then a studio can spend a relatively small amount of money to port it over.

If a developer actually takes the time to ensure it works or include all the same content, you would be surprised at how well it can actually sell.

Developers for the Wii U shot themselves in the foot by removing content or neglecting DLC. Of course nobody is going to buy it then.

kaizokuspy3405d ago

Most people who own a wii u or will own an NX will already own a ps4 or xbox one, why would the devs spend money porting then?

dcbronco3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

I think this devs getting a little ahead of himself. He needs to calm down. There were articles a month or two ago saying Nintendo had started shipping dev kits to third parties. You're not one because Nintendo is trying to keep their design a secret.

Here's why he needs to be patient. With the advancements in architecture and power efficiency Nintendo should be able to get a huge leap in power over the current generation.

With the move to 14nm Nintendo will get that power cheap. Microsoft and Sony are locked to three years old specs, if not they could drastically improve their power also. NX should be a 4-6 tflop console just because Nintendo could do that for $300.

NX is also probably based on x86. Which means it will be easy to port to. An APU based on GCN with an AMD CPU means it's the same thing as the other two. So whatever you're working on for them will port over maxed out because there is power to spare. You won't be developing from scratch.

Until you decide to take advantage of the extra power and do something special for Nintendo. But I bet Nintendo has enough in-house and third party right now to carry them through the first 18 months.

http://www.destructoid.com/...

Wow, that was October when they started sending those out.

deathtok3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

@kaizokuspy

You don't know what "most people" own.

-Guy who owns a Wii U but not a PS4 or Xbox One

Apollosupreme3405d ago

@Neonridr you're completely speculating. There is no more to support what you say than there is to prove that Jedi Knights are real. Cool idea bro.

sonarus3405d ago

I dont really see this as a problem. In my opinion the best Nintendo games are BY FAR the first party stuff. I havent owned a Nintendo in a while but if i did i would want to buy Mario, mario cart, smash bros, donkey kong, zelda etc. Not call of duty or any of that other ubisoft stuff.

Cindy-rella3405d ago

So Nintendo is being Nintendo by doing what they normally do. Only an idiot would believe things would be different now after theyve been doing the same things for like 20 years. Theyve been practicing bad behaviours for years when it comes to third party devs.

frankiebeans3405d ago

@kaizokuspy you hit it on the head.

thricetold3405d ago

@deathlok

You are in the minority. He said most, which considering how many X1's and ps4's are already out and will be out by the time this arrives is pretty good estimate.

Nintentional3405d ago

Jesus, some of the people on N4G here don't READ. Neonridr NEVER said he was stating fact, he said he "THINKS," meaning it's just his opinion! Why are you asking him for evidence and why do you have 29 agrees on your comment? Lol smh

Mr Pumblechook3405d ago

More likely Nintendo will not want to give their NX Dec kits (and spec secrets) to an indie developer who is especially close to Microsoft, who is one of their competitors!

alti3405d ago

do you not know the meaning behind "I think" ?

DarXyde3405d ago

Considering games generally sold better on Xbox 360 and now PlayStation 4, why is it unheard of to consider Nintendo having great third party support? I think Square is on board, at least it seems as much.

If Nintendo simplifies their architecture, moving away from PowerPC and to x86, there's very little reason to NOT make it happen.

Add to the fact Nintendo is going all digital for NX, and you have a pretty appealing offer to developers and publishers who control the price market.

freshslicepizza3405d ago

typical nintendo, keeping thirst patty in the dark as long as possible. there hasn't been any leaks from anyone about the dev kits which tells me nobody has really started making games on it or if they have it's not been very long except of course nintendo who always wants to have their games outshine everyone else. even if that means not sharing any technical support or offering dev tools early on.

that's ok, nintendo knows they can sell millions just based on their own games.

rainslacker3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

@moldy

"there hasn't been any leaks from anyone about the dev kits"

Maybe because it's typically the smaller devs, like the one who made Ori and the Blind forest, who are more leak prone, whereas bigger publishers keep their mouth shut and don't go running to the press at every oppurtunity to promote their own wares, and screw up sensitive information from the 1st party vendors.

It's not atypical at all for smaller publishers and lesser known devs to not get any response or dev kits before information that Nintendo wants announced is announced, but it's silly to assume companies like EA and Ubi don't already have at least some information on the system.

Even if they aren't too keen on Nintendo to release a new system, they will capitalize on the launch hype, just like they did with the WiiU.

Think of it this way. At the reveals of X1/PS4/WiiU, what small pubs/devs were showing off their games at the reveal and shortly afterwards? None. EA, Activision, and Ubisoft were the only 3rd party entrants showing off any games. But after the reveal, the floodgates opened for more dev kits to go out, and games got made(or ported) for the new consoles.

never4get3405d ago

"I want the goddamn devkits or at least proper hardware specs ideally 2 years before release"

2 years for a game like Unravel? How lazy are they? Even Nintendo probably thinks that's too long. Nintendo maybe confidence that their console is so easy, it can cuts down developments time in half. Shorter Dev Time = More competitive.

Arguments3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Now everyone have a Bachelor in Business Administration.
Is funny how they discuss about something they dont even know what it is. Including that "developer" I can not take him serious, using words like (waaay) and (duh) he sound so unprofessional.

abstractel3404d ago

Hmm, not sure why the disagrees are all swaying towards thinking that NX will have no 3rd party support because of this article. Nintendo might be thinking that it's too soon to send out dev kits to smaller devs. If Nintendo has learned anything from Wii U, it must be that they need 3rd party support and create a console that is at least on level with current gen.

Or so one would hope.

abstractel3404d ago

Did people even read the neogaf post this is referring to? He even says:

"And just to be clear, it's not just Nintendo, every hardware manufacturer is treating their devkits and their unreleased consoles like they're the second coming and are insanely secretive about it to a stupid degree in todays time. It's not even that the hardware isn't finished (duh), but you could at least give me the goddamn specs, so we'd know what to build shit for!"

Apollosupreme3404d ago (Edited 3404d ago )

Nintentional, we can read. Can you interpret? What he was saying and how he was saying it was as though it is a matter of fact. Fact and opinion aren't the same. It clearly his opinion that Nintendo is fine, it's his unproven theory that they're doing x, y and z.

He doesn't know what they're doing, he has no proof to support what he claims they are doing.

He's building a make believe stance to oppose some random no name devs opinion that's not worth the time of day to begin with.

What I did was call out a fanboy stance. Only a fanboy would make stuff up to defend against something that's not worth defending. Got it now?

Tei7773404d ago

"t's not just Nintendo, every hardware manufacturer is treating their devkits and their unreleased consoles like they're the second coming and are insanely secretive about it to a stupid degree in todays time"

This speaks volumes. The most likely scenario is that this is an indie perspective (an indie Nintendo have no relationship with). Many major studios had recieved Wii U and PS4 dev kits over a year in advance so his statement doesn't fit.

Eonjay3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Good point about the large studios first.
If you remember correctly, an article just went up saying that EA is meeting with Nintendo to discuss plans so the statement of no support is obviously taken out of context.

Welcome to the internet.

Edit: to Mahler (Moon Studios): how do you know that the NX is releasing in 2016 anyway? If it releases in 2017, Nintendo has plenty of time to get the devkits out and for 3rd parties to get up and running. Obviously, this means that year one will include lots of ports... but that is still support.

Phunkydiabetic13405d ago

Lets break it down for you.....

N64---Lacked third party support because Nintendo decided to stick with cartridges while the industry moved onto cd's.

Gamecube---Lacked third party support because Nintendo decided to use mini discs.

Wii---Lacked third party support because Nintendo used a vastly underpowered console with a control scheme that needs no further explanation.

WiiU---Lacked third party support because Nintendo once again is using a vastly underpowered console.

This shunning by third party devs has been happening since THE 90s. From what little we know of the NX Nintendo is set to repeat the same bullshit that has driven away third parties in the past.

Apparently lots of people as a stupid amount of people purchased Battlefront on consoles and 6.3 million people played the Division beta. Not to mention Assassins Creed which keeps selling every year, among titles like battlefield.

6.4 million people played a Ubisoft beta so am going with alot of people do .

I just quote the Dev himself:
"And just to be clear, it's not just Nintendo, every hardware manufacturer is treating their devkits and their unreleased consoles like they're the second coming and are insanely secretive about it to a stupid degree in todays time."

He is generally complaining about the practice and just takes Nintendo and their NX as an example. I understand both sides ...

mhunterjr3405d ago

Why not just get everyone on board? Worked wonders for the PS4

Ck1x3405d ago

There are games that were shown or announced at the PS4 reveal that still aren't out yet. Nintendo can't sell a system on hype alone like Sony and get away with it. Every game within the PS4's first 2 years Playstation fans were acting as if they were must have titles.

Nintendo needs straight forward hardware with no nonsense of trying to sell people on supercharged PC b.s. aka Sony. Then try to justify why games aren't running at 1080p 60fps or 1080p period.

The reveal of the NX also has to have impressive software to showcase to the public. Many early WiiU titles were scrutinized on whether they actually looked better than PS3&360 games. The NX needs to out of the gate have games that look and play better than PS4 or XbOne titles.

XanderZane3405d ago

Are they? Are the BIG GUNS on board? Where is the proof?

extermin8or3405d ago

The big guns are always on-board for about a year or two for most Nintendo consoles however as time progresses you find they release fewer and fewer games then they drop support. It's been a similar situation for all the Nintendo home consoles in my living memory. Bar the wii which continues ti get shovelware.

Neonridr3404d ago

where is the proof they aren't Xander?

Think about it.

XanderZane3403d ago

@Neonridr
Well they weren't on board with the Wii U. So we would like to see proof that 3rd party support are on board with this new NX console. Haven't seen or heard anything yet. The system is suppose to launch this year. Guess we'll have to wait until the E3 to know for sure.

"This is actually THE singlest most annoying thing for every dev out there. We also talked to Nintendo and got absolutely nothing - I'll never understand that. And just to be clear, it's not just Nintendo, every hardware manufacturer is treating their devkits and their unreleased consoles like they're the second coming and are insanely secretive about it to a stupid degree in todays time. It's not even that the hardware isn't finished (duh), but you could at least give me the goddamn specs, so we'd know what to build shit for!

What's needed to sell hardware is goddamn good software. With Nintendo not having any devkits out there at this point and probably even wanting to sell it in 2016, I can already guarantee that they'll just not have any software support, since nobody can just jumble games together in less than a year. I mean, you can, but it'll be garbage.

The same is true for Engine Support - Get Unity and Epic to support these consoles WAAAAY ahead of release. By the time the console launches, it should be EASY for developers to develop games for these systems, things shouldn't just only start at this point.
I want the goddamn devkits or at least proper hardware specs ideally 2 years before release - Keep all the developers updated, start a forum where devs can chat and figure out all the problems everyone's having, instead of everyone just having to deal with it. None of that's happening anywhere and it's just braindamaged. "

* First of all, this sounds like a 15 year old is made and can't have their way.....doesn't sound like a professional.

* Says Dev kits aren't out......Nintendo sent many out in 2015.

* Complains that Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo won't give him information and specs, so THEY must all be in the wrong.

What dummy. Doesn't he realize they aren't giving him specs because people like him love to gossip and will spoil and leak all the information which diminishes the appeal of each new consoles reveal.

What a whiney baby.

He is mad because none of the big three will bow down to him, and give him what he wants.

Sirk7x3404d ago

Exactly the thought I had. Maybe they haven't given him a devkit, because they don't want him making a game on it lol.

Christopher3405d ago

He's asking for specs on machines that aren't finalized. What did he expect? No hardware manufacturer is going to reveal that information until they have it set in stone themselves.

I don't see how this is at all different and I don't see why XBO or PS4 would want to reveal plans going forward when they don't want developers thinking about games 4 years from now and instead tomorrow.

rainslacker3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

That's not entirely true. For companies that make their own engines, target specs will be given, and even specific information for them to make their engines. That's why bigger publishers, and places like Epic or Unity, can get this information in advance. The devs using these engines, probably not so much, because it is rather pointless to target a spec that isn't set.

Plus, smaller devs like to run their mouths a lot, and the more people in on the game, the more likely information is to leak. But at the bigger companies, the devs likely to have access to such things aren't the ones that get a lot of press interviews, and they are smart enough not to risk losing their jobs by leaking sensitive information which could be harmful to the 1st party vendors, and their own company.

It's pretty apparent the difference in candor between a dev who works for a publisher, and an indie dev. Outside the boisterous and outspoken high profile devs, it's the indies which seem to make the most fuss and comment on things they probably aren't supposed to. Looking at Gamingbolt articles is enough to back up this belief.

I remember back before the PS4 and X1 reveals, despite knowing they were coming, and even knowing that the early dev kits were being shipped or in place, the company I worked for had a hard time getting any information directly from any of the console makers. They sent us courtesy replies to say they would inform us when more information was ready to be released...and this company was an official developer for all three of the consoles, and fairly high profile developer, although more mid-tier than AAA...but well respected all around.

Christopher3405d ago

***That's not entirely true. For companies that make their own engines, target specs will be given, and even specific information for them to make their engines.***

Not 4 years in advance, they won't... Do people think next-gen machines are only 2 years out?

rainslacker3405d ago

Four years..no, no one would get anything, because it would be pointless, and engine makers have enough to do. However, 12-18 months is not abnormal. I was talking more about the NX, which is speculated to at least be revealed in full this year. Around conference season we'll probably see a dedicated event, a month or two before E3, which is when dev kits, and updated engines, will likely go out to official devs.

_-EDMIX-_3405d ago

What on earth do you mean little guys? This is exactly what made their systems fail in the first place they cannot keep creating systems in secret only for their teams and then everybody else is forced to have to go through them to figure out what the heck they're creating.

if they want to have a successful platform it must have the community support overall and understanding how it works but the reality is you shouldn't even be having to teach these teams how to use your hardware your hardware should be able to be used by most teams look at how Sony and Microsoft are developing their Platforms to be made with ease.

If this is true I'm calling right now. NX might be there last platform they create before going third party they cannot keep competing directly against third party and expecting to win.

At least coming off the wii they had a somewhat huge install base now with wii u they barely have that. NX very much could be there last Platforms they create

Christopher3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Within reason, though. I mean, he's complaining that Sony and MS aren't telling him the specs of their next consoles now... that's just unreasonable at this time.

As far as NX... Nintendo will have something simple enough. I kind of guarantee they will fall into the same issues on their next platform as they have now.

UltraNova3405d ago

@Chris

"I kind of guarantee they will fall into the same issues on their next platform as they have now."

Yeah they most probably will, since they are so stubborn and behind times.

If they end up selling 15 million units within 3+ years, again, they might reconsider their attitude because that's when they'll realize they are quickly burning through the OG Wii's money cache.

Neonridr3404d ago

Didn't people say the Wii was the last console? Then the Wii U? Now the NX?

Gotta focus on the big fish first. Assuming Nintendo only had so many dev kits to go around who do you think is going to have priority? The developer of Unravel? Or Electronic Arts, or Activision, or Ubisoft?

Think about it EDMIX. I am not saying that indie support is not important, the Wii U actually has quite a bit of indie support. Seems like the only studios that are supporting the console aside from Nintendo themselves are indies. But they gotta focus on having the heavy hitters on the console before the smaller titles.

Do you think more people would care that GTA VI is on the NX or Ori and the Blind Forest?

it's been decades since nintendo home consoles had great or even equal support from 3rd party publishers. nintendo fans buy their consoles to play exclusives

that is a fact

3rd party publishers see no reason to jump in now when they can make more money on ps4,xbox one and pc.

nintendo is so out of touch that i don' expect them or their fans to understand how gaming business works and how to be successful

nintendo is about to launch another failure when it comes to home consoles.

believe me i am not bitter or happy that they are or will fail. but it's so annoying when a multi billion dollar company just doesn't even try

UltraNova3405d ago

No a buy out will never happen.

They can exit the console business altogether and turn to handhelds and mobile only. Considering the mobile craze we are witnessing, they will end up making more money that way for sure.

I would go on to say the could make their games available on xbox and PS but its Nintendo we are talking about here, they'd go bankrupt before they work with 'enemy'.

Picnic3404d ago

You sound such a corporate sucker up that you must be tiny in really life, like the Wizard of Oz pulling his levers.

ruefrak3404d ago

Exactly. This guy is bitter because HE doesn't have a devkit. Nintendo wants to keep the details of the NX a surprise and so it's only fitting that they wouldn't give a devkit to a smaller dev who likes to go and make all his frustrations known on Neogaf.

I know that if I had information that I didn't want to get leaked out, this guy is the last person I would give it to.

Segata3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

They have billions in cash. Wii U makes profit. They also run a Major League Baseball Team.
They can take losses for 36 years before they need to worry. So They can make another console that sells like Wii U and be fine as long as it made profit. http://wiiudaily.com/2014/0...

The article proves they really have no worries even IF they were taking losses could still go til 2075

Griever3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Man enough of that ancient lie. That article is from from 2014 which means the figures are from 2013 so its really old. Secondly, that is just BS spread by Nintendo fanboys a few years back as a damage control for Wii U's failure. I wish I got a dime for everytime a Nintendo fanboy used that.

They only have $2.81 billion in bank as of 2015. They may have had $10 billion during the heydays of the Wii but they have burnt through it all in less than a decade if they really had that much money. They had 3.4 billion in 2014 but they lost another $600 million cash in just one year. Here is teh latest financial statement,

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/...

Check at the bottom of page 13. It says in second column "cash and cash equivalents --- 281,539 million Yen." Convert it into dollars and its only $2.81 billion. The 2014 cash is next to it at $3.4 billion and one can see that they have lost $600 million cash in one year.

That is all the money they have left and they are not going to last until 2075 with just that much at the rate they are losing cash annually.

_-EDMIX-_3405d ago

Nintendo actually can't afford another failed platform as the numbers are decreasing every generation for them the wii u numbers are lower than wii and 3DS's numbers are lower than the DS so it's very clear their installed base is shrinking every generation by a very very extreme substantial amount.

We cannot afford to keep messing up and losing their install basis as there's no telling if many of those gamers will actually return, you keep making it sound as if well they could keep doing it and then find some spark in 100 mil will be right back that actually doesn't work that way many of those consumers which of might of moved on to other Platforms might remain on those other Platforms meaning that even if Nintendo creates a platform that is their best platform how many will really know that when they're already owning something else?

That's the thing with a lost consumer once they've moved on they actually could care less about whether or not Nintendo has got their act together by then it may too be late. I do believe that Nintendo can not afford another failed platform as what many don't understand it cost these companies billions to develop those platforms in Mass so the failing of one hurts the company more than many actually really comprehend.

I believe if this platform fails it would be their best bet to save their money and go third party and become exclusively a software company as I do not believe there forte is hardware as they seem to continue to have trouble with it and fail.

Oh and the Amiibo's think Nintendo will be fine they do actually make money they wouldn't have survived for over 125 years others sure not all in the video games market but they've been here since day one and made it what it is today or at least helped shape the controllers and give us some of the most amazing gaming experiences around. Look at the attach rate, says it all fantastic games.

meche3343404d ago

Nintendo is worth 18.4 billion or something like that. I think they can

Hoffmann3405d ago

Nintendo..as usual.

I really hope the NX will be their last hardware and they find ways to create great games for the other platforms.

Nintendo needs to shrink and focus on software to grow again in the long run. Less and less people are buying their hardware, less and less games are made for their consoles.

-Foxtrot3405d ago

If that was to happen they could still produce games for the handheld while making bigger, console games on other consoles.

If they have a good idea to sell their own handheld then they could keep it for that platform.

I wouldn't want this to happen but it could work. I just don't want it to happen because Nintendo are being f****** stupid with the choices they have made and are making in these recent years.

Hoffmann3405d ago

Handheld wise they did and do a great job in general, but look at their software catalogues of their past handhelds and the DS and the 3DS. Its not half as bas as with the TV consoles, but the third party support is shrinking there as well.

And you and me we know that not everyone wants to buy a 2-500 dollars expensive hardware just to play Nintendo games. The hardcore Nintendo fans would do that maybe, but is this piece of the cake enough for Nintendo to produce as many great games as in the past?

I mean, you can alsready see a small decline of the quality of their products today already. I can't remember another year where their titles got so many 6 or 7's as in 2015.

@Hoffman Well said!

I believe better opportunities could be made elsewhere in regards to Nintendo where hardware isn't the focus but rather software ;)

Hoffmann3405d ago

Yeah. Its always amazinh how fast fans of Nintendo are there to say that it wouldnt be good for Nintendo, but sometimes a company is too blown up already and just has to shrink a bit to become more "healthy" in the long run.

I believe that its not good for Nintendo and also not for the fans of their games if Big N continues as they did in the last years

garrettbobbyferguson3405d ago

No, you don't believe better opportunities can be made elsewhere. You just typically troll nintendo articles.

Hoffmann3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

@garrettbobbyferguson
Fanboylogic 1x1. If people don't share my opinions, they are trolls.

PizzaSteve3405d ago

You speak the truth. I think they will go software because I don't think NX is gonna do any better than Wii U. It'd be weird to see a Nintendo exclusive on another console.

_-EDMIX-_3405d ago

1000% percent agree Hoff, at this point I just cannot take their terrible hardware just make games and let it be as a software company I think they're amazing as a hardware company this is where I disagree.

Some of their games lack features due to the company not fully understanding networking and you're having them play catch up to stuff like DLC which other platforms have had for 10 years now and they're playing catch up to all of these bare essential features that it just makes sense for them to run the gauntlet and just be a third-party developer and call it a day and let Sony and Microsoft worry about those other issues that they're already good at.

Philface3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

You realize that they can not change the design of a console that was made more then 4 years ago. Don't be impatient now, as you probably now that hey have a lot of change going on right now.

PhucSeeker3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Why does people want the market share to shrink even more than it already does ? It is not good for the consumers to have less options. It only benefits the corporates which will screw you even harder.

If there's a new console branch then i'm good with Nin step down.

YouTube is not even following its guideline and is currently screwing people over. But they're not fixing their way of doing thing. Would they keep at it if a big competitor shows up and takes their share of the market ?

Philface3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

That guy spreads kind of a rumor and every Nintendo hater jumps to it. How does that guy know that EA/ Ubisoft/ Square Enix/ ... have no devkits. Also he talks about PS and Xbox as well not giving them devkits and they even live from 3rd party support.

Also there is so much change at Nintendo right now and people are so inpatient to see what they have to offer in the future.

I don't get why people do not understand that Nintendo won't put there biggest source of income on other consoles they have more and better opportunities for there IPs then that (Movie, Tv series, Comic, ...)

Philface3405d ago (Edited 3405d ago )

Double post from me sorry.

Hopefully for right now it's just because they don't want any leaks about their new console. I really hope they've learned from their mistakes and don't end up shooting themselves in the foot again. I really want them to come back in strong with this one, I've got a lot of nostalgia in the Nintendo brand. I almost got a Wii U a while back, but now I'm waiting to see what they do with this instead.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales shatters records, most-sold console in 24-hour period

The Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new record by selling over 3 million units within 24 hours, tripling the PlayStation 4’s previous launch day sales.

Crazy. Switch 2 is going to do very well.

darthv7212d ago (Edited 12d ago )

No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.

The number of SW2 specific titles pales in comparison to the variety of SW1 games that get a performance boost right out of the box on this. And like the SX and PS5 before it, you can bet the majority are going to be using it as a means to better enjoy their existing titles that can benefit.

This may have been quick out of the gate... so was the WiiU. I quite enjoy it for what it is, but am keeping my expectations in check.

GenoPurpel12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

The Switch 2’s price point is great and fine and it’s still cheaper than the current gen of consoles aside from the Series S.

The only place I think they will fall short is their software sales, which also in turn may affect the hardware sales but not significantly. Parents will be fine paying for the system for their kids, but one look at an $80-$90 price tag for a single video game, that is where a lot of people will draw the line. Maybe not so much the people who are in the “willing to pay because I buy deluxe editions anyway” crowd, but for parents specifically, more sacrifices are gonna need to be made in their choices of gifts for their kids.

OtterX12d ago

As a parent of 3 with a very modest income, it was very affordable bc I already had an immense library of games, and the Mario Kart bundle came out to only about €50 more than a standard bundle. Both Zeldas were upgraded w Family Expansion Pass that I already had. Many games were upgraded for free. The only additional game I bought was Fast Fusion for 14.99 which was a great purchase!

Killer2020UK12d ago

People seem to forget that the Switch was $299 at launch which in today's money is roughly $400. That makes the Switch 2 a $50 increase when inflation is taken into account compared to the original.

Yes, people have less spending power on average compared to 2017 (Switch launch year) but this is not the MASSIVE price hike that people are making out Nintendo to be doing.

raWfodog12d ago

“No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.”

It could also be many people rushing to buy to avoid any possible tariff hikes in the future, but I think it’s still a good sign that many people still want physical consoles. Congrats to Nintendo! I’m not getting one at this time though (unless I get it for a Xmas present for one of my kids).

Congratulations Nintendo on finding the happy medium between their weak console and their invincible handheld plus learning from Sony and clearly defining the new console from the old unlike their Wii and Wii U just add a higher number simple yet effective 👍👍

victorMaje13d ago

Are people that keen on $90 games?
Is it true some remasters will also be $90?

DankSinatra12d ago

Tell me you don't research without telling me you don't research.

victorMaje12d ago

Nope. I didn’t research, I don’t own any Nintendo consoles and I had read on here something about $90 games on switch 2, so I guess it’s good now, people can calm down. Have a nice day :)

1nsomniac12d ago

I bought the Switch 2 I won’t be buying games at MK prices. I don’t ever pay over £45 for my games. Even my Nintendo switch exclusives I never paid more than £33 for.

franwex12d ago

I think the typo you put was meant to be $80.
Anyway, the answer to those questions seem to be yes.

victorMaje12d ago

Looks like I’ve been enlightened about the amount. Happy to see it’s not $90.

Sgt_Slaughter11d ago

Don't get your news from clickbait TikTokers/YouTubers, only go to the source (Nintendo) or reliable new outlets like IGN.

No game is $90 on the Switch 2, and they will never go there. Most games will be under $80, too.

cool
wasnt expecting it not to sell well

Profchaos13d ago

Its crazy that it's both the highest selling console on day 1 and people can walk into a store and buy it with no pre order

Ashunderfire8612d ago

Yup while I was waiting in line from Best Buy for Switch 2, like I did for Switch 1 back in 2017, every waiting 12am was going to get a Switch 2! I was in the no preorder line too!

My friend manage to get 4 Switch 2s at his GameStop store, that was lowkey not busy at all. Got them all for himself and his family. Super easy to get a Switch 2 over PS5.

Profchaos12d ago

The struggle to get a ps5 was real had mates wait over 2 years for stock i got lucky and got it day 1 but still

Ashunderfire8612d ago

I know and I also struggled getting a preorder for the PS5, when Walmart, Best Buy among other retailers open their preorders a day early before most of us realize it. I got my PS5 launch day thanks to YouTube Live Streamer Jake Randell. He helps people get preorders and launch consoles.

Neonridr11d ago

the PS5 also released during a global pandemic.

Ashunderfire8611d ago

It’s funny how I got disagrees for speaking the truth for what I experienced getting the Switch 2. Nintendo had more copies of Switch 2 than Sony for the PS5.

Don’t be butthurt about this very fact. People on here disagreeing with crazy reasons lol

hiawa2312d ago

Doesn't that mean Nintendo made sure they had plenty of stock available at retail.

Profchaos12d ago

Yeah it's nice to see they prepped for it

adamwparker12d ago

Yeah, I remember reading an article over two years ago with Nintendo stating that they were going to do all that they could to make sure their next console didn't have the PS5/XBox reseller swiping /no stock fiasco happen to them.

Looks like they made sure production met demand. Refreshing to see that the reseller thing didn't trend and I hope a lot of people who bought multiple units for the sole reason to resell then at $1000 are now stuck with them.

jznrpg12d ago

It also means there isn’t a chip shortage when PS5/Xbox came out during pandemic

gold_drake12d ago

to be where fair, we had a current gen come out during covid ha

repsahj12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I remembered I tried 7 pre-order events during the PS5 launch. I gave up and ended up buying 1 from a scalper. But now, I already secured 1 pre-order Switch 2 unit in my country very easy and without problems.

Neonridr11d ago

kudos to Nintendo for ensuring a healthy amount of stock.

well, the switch 2 has two holidays in the us, thanksgiving and Christmas.

so id say its fairly possible. the rest of the world will also grab them

Abriael44d ago

Yeah doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility as long as they have enough supply.

Si-Fly43d ago

Do people buy each other games consoles for Thanksgiving? I’m in Europe and always assumed it was just Christmas where gifts were exchanged.

Skate-AK43d ago

I don't think it's so much Thanksgiving, but that Black Friday is the day after.

darthv7243d ago (Edited 43d ago )

That time is often referred to as the start of the Xmas shopping season. For the last few years, retailers would do 'black Friday' deals at various times throughout the year. While many still prefer to start their shopping in the mid to late November, others will just buy when they feel the time (and prices) are right for them.

gold_drake42d ago

i guess its more black friday, should have been more clear ha

Switch and Switch are a different kettle of fish. A sell out at launch by the diehards, strong sales, then the non diehards will be put off by the £75 ($99) games, including the stupid download cards which are topping £65 ($85). Not rocket science to work out how the Switch 2 is going to pan out. The PS5 has sold well, but games at £70, sales have been low. As game sales drop, prices will rise. Sony could knock out all their games for £40 and still make a killing selling more games. There's no denying that a gaming crash is looming.

Rancegamerx43d ago

I agree, I don't see the Switch 2 selling anywhere near the numbers that these predictions suggest or what the general buzz is implying. While the initial sales will likely be strong, driven by diehard fans, I anticipate a gradual decline. It may not drop off immediately, but over time, sales will inevitably taper.

PRIMORDUS43d ago

Not paying for something that's not worth more than the price it was advertised, which is $449 - $499.
